Edward Elric trudged down the halls of the central building to the office of his superior Roy Mustang, feeling nothing but Anger and hatred. `Damnit! I just got off of my last mission yesterday and he's calling me for another one already!? What the hell did I do to deserve this!?' Edward thought to himself dismally. He walked slowly down the halls purposely dragging his feet until he reached the door to Mustang's office. Ed reached out, grabbed the knob and entered the room. “Alright Colonel, what is it this time?”
“Ah Full Metal, it's good to see you.” Mustang replied.
“Skip the pleasantries. I want to get this over with as soon as possible.” Edward retorted, quickly losing his temper.
“Calm down Full Metal, I called you hear because there have been rumors, that in a small town south of Central, someone has been going around and performing miracles using a strange light healing wounds and the like.” Ed's expression completely changed to a kind of pale frightened look with a hint of excitement blended in. “You've been looking for the Philosophers stone for some time now, so I went out on a limb and got you the assignment.”
`He has to want something from me for him to be this nice. Still if it's the stone I can't pass up the opportunity.' “Alright Colonel I'll do it.” Ed took up the papers that were offered to him and quickly left the office headed for the apartment that the military had given him. He nearly ran all the way home beaming with delight. When he got there he opened the door to see Alphonse waiting patiently watching television.
“You look happy brother; usually Colonel Mustang really upsets you.” Ed was still beaming and looked at Al thoughtfully.
“Alphonse, the Colonel gave me a mission concerning the Philosophers stone,” Edward relayed all of the information the Colonel had given him to Alphonse, and looked over the papers he had given him. “The mission file doesn't even have a description they say the person is just small and always wears a cloak the only other thing they know about him is that he has brown hair,” Edward just read the description over and over. “What!? I knew it there is a catch!” Edward yelled and nearly started to tear the apartment to pieces.
“What is it brother?” Alphonse asked timidly.
“There's no trouble down there but there is no military either so I get to `look after the town' for six god damned months.” Ed's expression changed to one that was full of mischief and evil. “Oh yes Mustang will pay.” Ed's tone scared Alphonse slightly.
“Um when do we leave Ed?”
Edward flipped open his pocket watch and looked at the time. “Our train leaves at two o'clock so in two hours.” Ed stormed off into his room muttering to himself, he packed his bags and set them in the living room. “Hey Al, I'm gonna take a shower before we go.”
“Okay brother.” Alphonse responded.
Ed walked into the restroom pulled out a towel and set it on the sink and undressed himself and got in the shower. `This water feels so good; it's been a long time since I could just relax. I know in the past every time we've heard something about the stone it's ended in disappointment but I can't help this strong feeling I have that this time we might really have it.' Edward finished his shower and got dressed in his usual attire put his hair in a braid and left with Al for the Central Station. They got on their train and it soon departed. “Ugh! How long is this ride going to take? This city is out in the middle of nowhere!”
“Calm down brother I'm sure we'll be there soon.” And Alphonse was right they were there merely fifteen minutes after Alphonse had made his statement. They gathered Ed's bags and got off of the train. Edward surveyed his surroundings.
“Could this place be any ritzier? The colonel said that this place didn't have military personnel and it's this nice. Maybe it won't be so bad staying here.” Ed said placing his hands behind his head and walking.
“Alright brother this paper has our address on it so the directions say to go that way.” Al said while pointing in the direction to go. Edward nodded and they both headed in that direction taking in the sites. There were marble statues, the houses were enormous, and the streets were beautiful.
As they were walking they overheard a conversation between two men. “Yeah he's amazing my left arm was broken in three places and he healed in bam just like that” the first man snapped his fingers to put emphasis on what he said.
“I know but he's awfully small he's even smaller than that blonde guy in the red coat.”
Edward tuned quickly with nothing but rage in his eyes, if it weren't for Alphonse the two men may have had more than a broken arm to worry about. “Who's so short that a mouse could eat him and still be hungry!?”
The tow men just looked at Ed like he was insane. “Hey didn't mean to hurt your feelings but uh we didn't even say that. No hard feelings?” the first man offered his hand to Ed. Ed reluctantly shook it. “Hey I know you you're the Full Metal Alchemist right?”
Ed smiled it was nice getting recognized. “Yup that's me.”
“Why are you here? The military didn't send you to arrest the healer did they?”
“No I just wanted to speak with him not arrest him, and doesn't he have a name?” Ed asked a little bewildered.
“I'm sure he does but no one knows what it is. He helps us so much and when he says that his name is not important nobody pushes him to tell them.” Edward thought for a moment.
“Well how do you guys call on him how does he know when there is trouble?”
“He comes every other day to the town square and everyone waits in line and he'll fix anything or heal wounds. He's saved countless lives, if the military was sending someone to arrest him I don't think the town would take it very well. He doesn't accept money or gifts he just won't take them. No one knows why and nobody asks questions they're just happy he's here. Some people have tried to call him God, but he's assured them that he was just a friendly stranger. Also nobody knows what he looks like, but again he says he doesn't want fame just to help so his name and his face are a mystery to us.”
“When is he visiting again?” Edward asked eager for an answer.
“Tonight at eight o'clock sharp.”
“Thank you.” Edward said politely and walked away with Alphonse next to him. “So Al, you think it's the real deal?”
“I don't know brother I guess we'll just have to see tonight.”
“Yeah, I guess we will,” They continued walking when they finally reached their destination. “Whoa!” was all Edward could muster up to say. “Is this the right address?”
“Yes it is.” The brothers gazed upon what had to be the most luxurious house that they had ever seen two stories and with a courtyard with a fountain dead center. That was just a front view the two went into the front gate and walked to the front door, Alphonse pulled out a key and was about to open the front door but someone opened it from the inside, the man who opened the door was tall and thin wearing a suit and he had gray hair.
“Master Edward and Master Alphonse I presume.” Said the tall man, “You may call me John,” Edward stood wide eyed and mouth agape. “I will be your butler and we have your maids here as well.”
“Al I think I can get used to living here.”
“I think you can too brother.”
“Um John, Al and I want to see this mystery healer guy in the town square when does he arrive and when can we leave to meet him?”
“He will arrive in one hour making his time of arrival promptly at eight o
`Clock,” John said with a kind of snotty attitude. Ed nodded and went off to explore the house. The house was astonishing Both Edward and Alphonse were amazed the place was completely furnished with the most brilliant of furniture a little too ritzy for Ed's taste but he could get used to it. While they explored the house they counted the rooms and restrooms there were ten rooms and seven restrooms. Each room was large and had a luxurious bed in it as well. About an hour and a half later Ed decided they should head for the town square where they would see this “healer”.
The two walked down the street following John, the whole walk was silent, when they reached the town center the whole town must have been there. There was a line in front of a large table but nobody was at the table yet, the large clock in the center struck eight and it chimed eight times. After the eighth chime finished a lone cloaked figure came walking down the street about five children ran up to him and hugged his legs, though their heads came up a little past his waist, everyone was silent so you could hear the figure chuckle lightly and one of the children spoke, “Mister healer, will you play ball with us?”
The figure chuckled again and the only skin you could see, his chin and lips, formed a warm smile. Then he spoke his voice soft and sweet, kind of alluring. “Yes, but first I must work and then we will play alright?” the children smiled and ran off.
“Hey Al he's awful nice to them don't you think so,” Edward spoke of him almost fondly.
“Yes he does I wonder why he does all this.”
The figure strode over to the table and people offered him clothes and food and an array of other gifts he smiled again and politely declined saying that their thanks were plenty. Edward and Alphonse joined the line they were the last as well it appeared that everyone had gotten their early. The brothers watched as he fixed simple things such as jars and then to broken legs or arms. It was astonishing, amazing in all aspects of the words.
Finally it was the Edwards chance to talk with him. “You are the Full Metal Alchemist are you not?” the figure asked kindly.
Edward was a bit taken aback by this, “Yes I am.”
“You're right arm…It is auto mail isn't it?”
“Yes,” Edward's voice was a tad shaky.
“May I see it?” Edward slowly pulled off his coat and right glove and handed them both to Alphonse. The “healer” gently touched the auto mail and smiled sweetly again. He grasped it tighter and there was a bright light, when the light vanished the figure's hands were back under the cloak.
Edward looked at his arm, “It…its normal…I-I can feel it Al I can feel my arm.” Everyone applauded and Edward looked back at the figure, `how?' was the question that was burning in Ed's mind.
“Edward Elric please come and walk with me?” the figure questioned, Edward nodded and the figure started off Edward right behind him and Alphonse behind Edward. The children ran up to the figure.
“Oh children I'm so sorry, here tomorrow at eleven in the morning I will come play with you so be ready,” The children were satisfied and ran off back to their parents. The three continued to walk without so much as a word being uttered for some time, Edward was still fascinated by his arm and was flexing it over and over, he just had to know this persons name.
“What is your name?” Edward asked, the figure turned and a smile played at his lips.
“So many have asked this question of me, I'm curious why do you think I will tell you?” The figure seemed as though he had a questioning gaze but there was no telling with the hood over his head.
“I could capture you and force you to tell.” Edward had a wicked smile on his face.
“Is that so well how about this, should you capture me I'll tell you my name and show you my face, not only that I will fix your brother's body as well.” Edward and Alphonse were both extremely shocked.
“H-how did you k-now about m-my body?” Alphonse asked his voice echoing in the hollow armor.
“Any truly skilled alchemist could have guessed it…anyway do we have a deal or not?” The boy shifted his stance so that one of his hips jutted out to the side and he crossed his arms.
“Alright, you've got a deal.” Edward handed his red coat to Alphonse and darted after the figure, of course the figure ran as well, they were both just as fast as the other. Running through the deserted streets, Edward quickly clapped his hands together and set them on the ground causing a wall to form in front of the unknown boy. A growl could be heard from him then he jumped up and was now doing a handstand on top of the wall.
“Come on Edward you can do better than that,” he taunted and disappeared to the other side of the wall. The figure looked behind himself as he was running only to find that the eldest Elric brother was not behind him anymore. “Wow he sure does give up easy.” The figure turned to keep walking but hit something and fell to the ground with an oomph, he stood and rubbed his sore bottom.
“Y'know I really thought you would have seen that coming.” The figure looked to see who had spoken and of course it was none other than Edward Elric. The smaller boy stared with his mouth open.
“How did you?” He was perplexed his voice sounded young yet mature at the same time meaning he couldn't be any older than Edward.
“Alright we don't have all night now tell me your name, show me your face, and fix my brother.” Edward demanded, Alphonse was now standing at Edward's side.
The small boy grunted and slowly took off his hood to reveal pale skin, short brown hair with two long bangs that flared up and then down to reach a little past his chin, and the most shocking blue eyes they were the deepest blue, two dazzling sapphires that thoroughly accentuated the rest of his face he truly had angelic beauty.
Edward and Alphonse both gasped when they saw his face, and he blushed. “Okay now what's your name?” Edward asked nicely and smiling sweetly.
The figure blushed, “M-my name i-is D-Dimitri Gladstone.”
“Okay Dimitri. Could you fix my brother now?”
“Uh yeah but we need to do it inside.”
“Alright we'll go to our house.” Edward motioned for Dimitri to follow, and he did. They arrived at the house and Dimitri had been silent the whole way there, and on his way into the house each step he took was cautious. They found an empty room, probably the only one in the house; there Dimitri drew an alchemic circle and told Alphonse to stand in the middle of it.
“When this is finished I will most likely be unconscious.” Edward nodded and the young Alchemist placed his hands on the edge of the circle, a blue light appeared along with some electricity as well, a light shrouded Alphonse and Edward only stared. Dimitri's eyes closed, and then something strange happened a red light came out of Dimitri's chest about where his heart was, this went on for several more minutes and a human silhouette became visible in the center of the circle. Tears of joy flooded Edward's eyes.
Then it all came to a halt and standing in the center of the circle was Alphonse's human form. “Al!” Edward yelled in joy and ran up and hugged his brother, Edward couldn't have been happier. Alphonse had changed so much over the years. He was now visibly taller than Edward was. His hair was still short and his eyes still the same golden brown.
“Y-you're taller than me!” Edward yelled pointing an accusing finger at Alphonse.
“S-sorry brother it just happened.”
“I'm just so glad to see you Al!” He again hugged his `little' brother.
“I'm happy to see you too Ed but uh I need some clothes.” Al laughed inwardly and scratched the back of his head. Edward looked at Alphonse and noticed that he was indeed naked. Edward was about to run off and find some clothes when Alphonse spoke. “Brother wait, what about Dimitri?” Alphonse gestured over to the now nude form of Dimitri. Both of the brothers blushed at the bare body of the young alchemist. Unscathed and radiant save for one “X” shaped scar over his heart. “The energy must have dissolved his clothes. Edward picked up the boy.
They found John and he gave them three pairs of satin pajamas one red pair for Edward a blue pair for Alphonse and a deep purple for Dimitri. They dressed Dimitri and put him in a bed in one of the spare rooms. Then they both retired to their own rooms for some much needed sleep.
