Miaka ran.
After what Nakago had done to her, she could no longer bare to be around Tamahome. It hurt too much, knowing that what she had wanted to give him had been taken away. Taken away by a cold, vindictive, evil man who cared nothing for what he did. Tears fell from her eyes, thinking of what she had lost.
'That bastard! He's taken everything I love away! Yui-chan…Tamahome…Nuriko…'
Miaka swallowed, letting the tears fall once again. Not paying attention to where she was going, she tripped over a rock. Unable to catch herself in time, she fell face first onto the dirt, skinning and bruising herself badly. 'Great. Just great. What else can go wrong today?!'
Miaka realized then she should have never thought that. Before her, was a giant weasel. A very large, mean and hungry giant weasel. She looked up, staring into the large gapping maw of the beast. Its teeth glistened, ready for its next meal. Her.
She shrieked, stumbling back. The weasel jumped; Miaka screamed.
A sound then, a piercing sound that swept through the region, struck the weasel. It fell in mid air, blood pouring from its cracked skull. Miaka saw crumble in a pile of its own blood. She looked up from the red pool liquid spreading from the beast's head, to her savior. Her eyes widened in disbelief and fear. "Suboshi…"
A young boy, no older than Miaka herself, stood before her, a cloak around his shoulders and a lantern in his hand. Blond hair fell from underneath a blue bandanna. He bore a stern expression, heightening her fear.
Overcome with all that had befallen her, she passed out in a dead faint.
A gentle caress woke Miaka from a sound sleep. She tossed and turned, her dreams haunting her. "No….Tamahome…"
The caress stopped all of a sudden. Miaka frowned, opening her eyes. Her blurred vision didn't help matters. Slowly, her vision cleared to reveal a small bedroom. She sat up, but regretted it immediately as her head began to pound in agony. Groaning, she squinted, looking around.
A kindly old lady sat next to her on her right side. She held in her hand a wet towel. She gently pressed it to Miaka's forehead, and the pain began to subside. "It's good to see you awake. We were so worried about you after Kaika brought you to us."
"Kaika?" Miaka looked puzzled. The last thing she remembered was seeing Suboshi…
"Hai. My son. Kaika, don't stand in the corner like that! Come out!"
"Hai, Okaasan."
Miaka turned towards the soft voice. Her eyes widened in fear. 'Suboshi!'
Bowing, Kaika took her hand. "I'm sorry, miss. Have I frightened you?"
"Uhhh…no…you just look like someone else I know…"
Kaika nodded. "Well, you are quite safe here, ne, okaasan?"
"Hai, sotsu. You are quite safe here. Tell me, what's your name?" The elderly woman queried.
"Miaka. Yuuki Miaka…"
"Miaka. What a lovely name. I am Zueka Tae. This is my son, Kaika."
Miaka finally looked at Kaika. Her eyes widened, finally recognizing him. He shook his head, indicating for her to be silent. She nodded. "It's a pleasure to meet both of you."
Tae stood. "Well, I'll let you rest. I have dinner to prepare."
"DINNER???!!!!!!!!!!"
Kaika's eyes twitched. Tae blinked. "Yes, of course, dear. You'll be hungry of course. Don't worry, we'll feed you."
A loud sigh of relief came from Miaka. Kaika mildly sweat dropped until his mother was gone. When she left, he shook his head. "You haven't changed at all, Miaka-san."
Miaka blinked. "Chiri…I mean, Amiboshi? Is that you?"
"Hai, Miaka-san. It's me." Kaika sat down next to her on the bed. "You gave me quite a scare, with that weasel."
Snorting, Miaka shook her head. "So that was you. I thought it was Suboshi…"
"Suboshi? You've seen Shun-chan? How is he? Is he safe?!" Amiboshi queried, his eyes wide with worry.
"Uhhh…he's okay, I guess. I wouldn't know, since every time I see him, he tries to kill me…"
"NANI?!!!"
Miaka nodded. "He doesn't like me much. Or the rest of the Suzaku's. He thinks we're responsible for your death…"
"Oh." Amiboshi looked down, fidgeting. "I really screwed that up, ne?"
"I don't know what you're talking about. Screwed what up?" Miaka asked in confusion.
"Everything. I let myself fall into that river because I didn't want Nakago to be able to summon Seiryuu. I messed up your chance to summon Suzaku. My brother thinks I'm dead and wants to kill the only people that were ever friendly to me. Need me to go on?!" Amiboshi quirked a smile at her.
She shook her head. "What happened wasn't your fault. Don't think it was…"
"No, Miaka-san. It was my fault. You say Suboshi tries to kill you every time he sees you. That is not the Suboshi I know. Not the young boy that is my otouto." Amiboshi shook his head sorrowfully. "If what you say is true, and I have no reason t doubt you, then my brother has changed. He's become…someone I don't know. Shunkaku would never do such a thing. Not the Shunkaku I know."
"Everyone changes, Amiboshi. You've changed. I've changed. Suboshi's changed." Miaka looked out the window, biting her lip. She couldn't be the one to tell Amiboshi what Suboshi had done. It would destroy him. "Your brother feels very deeply. He cares very much for those he loves. He wishes to protect them."
"But killing isn't the way to do that! I should know!"
"Amiboshi! Stop! Are you saying you hate your brother?!" Miaka's eyes widened.
Amiboshi shook his head violently. "NO! I could never hate Shunkaku. Not ever. I just…wish I had thought things through…"
Miaka grinned. "There's a saying in my world. 'If wishes were horses.' "
Amiboshi grinned back. "I get you. Wishes are as flighty as a horse. Still…"
"No still. You made your decision. Suboshi made his. None of us can take them back. We have to deal with the consequences of our actions."
"Hai, Miaka-san. I will try."
"Me too."
Moving away from the door, Tae left the two alone. She had heard quite enough of their conversation. She bit her lip, entering the kitchen. Taking out some rice, she began to prepare dinner with an abstracted air.
Her husband, Lo, entered. She looked up, then turned her eyes back to the rice she was stirring. She briefly described the conversation she had overheard. "Lo, we're going to loose him again! I can feel it! I…I can't loose another son…I can't!"
Putting his arm around her shoulders, Lo squeezed. "I know, Tae. I know. I don't want to loose him either. It was a godsend when we found him at the river…"
"Hai. And that same god is going to take him away from us!"
"No, Tae. No one will take Kaika from us again. I swear it."
"But…"
"No. There is a way, darling. You know there is."
Tae was silent. She did indeed know of a way. But how could they do that to him?
"It will keep him with us, safe. It will also heal him, love." Lo whispered in her ear, kissing behind it. He patted her on the shoulder and left the kitchen.
Tae took a deep breath. She looked out the window for a long moment. Shaking her head, she took the rice off the fire. She looked down into the white mass. It seemed to mock her as she stirred.
