Chapter One
"-Kaku! Shunkaku!" Yui Hongo snapped at her daughter, looking at the young woman in the driver's seat beside her.
"What?" The girl answered in a bored, slightly exasperated voice.
"Don't tune me out like that! I know you're tired sweetie, but you know I can't drive right now!"
Shunkaku rolled her eyes. No, of course she couldn't drive, Berry had broken her right leg the other week. What was it with her mother and assholes, anyway? First Shunkaku's father, then an incredibly long line of drunks, abusers, psychos and downright lunatics; it was like she was a magnet for abuse: both physical and mental.
Of course, now that Shunkaku was eighteen she could have just left that all behind, but something inside her refused to leave her less-than-lucky mother. So, when she actually managed to land a good sports scholarship at Bosman and Judes University-a tiny school, but one that boasted a good reputation in both sports and academics as well as being placed in a tiny town with nice residents-she had convinced her mother to move with her.
Yui sighed and leaned back in the passengers seat, "Okay, what have I done this time, hm? What horrible completely blasphemous crime have I committed this time, Shunkaku?"
"There's the town."
Yui took off her sunglasses and risked the blinding late afternoon sun to get a better look at their new home. The blue '95 Honda entered what served as a Main Street, and soon came to what looked to be the only stoplight in town. Lining the streets, other than a strangely immaculate sidewalk on both sides, were a few tiny shops, an even smaller café, but the majority were hopes. Once the light turned they kept going down. At the next corner was the school, an elementary, middle-, junior- and high-school all in one. Odd how this town would be the home of a University, but it was. It seemed some rich man had decided to honor his old home with a new source of income since the oil refinery that had been nearby three years back had shut down. Most of the citizens had been employed there, or in the city that surrounded it, and this town had crept up for people to live in who didn't like city life.
Turning on the road by the school, they quickly spotted the University. It wasn't large or impressive looking, like the stereotype that seemed to always be shown on TV, but after looking at the rest of the town it did stand out a little. For one, it was one of the few buildings in town that stood up to three stories. It had tan-coloured bricks, and a lavish front lawn that must employ three gardeners to keep up. Then again, this was its starting year.
Pleased, Shunkaku smiled a little at the building before they turned into a driveway right across from the front doors of the building. Turning off the engine, she stepped out and took a good look at their new home. It was two stories tall, like almost every home on this street, and had been designed in a peculiar French style, with every home capable of holding two families. Like the school, the lawn here looked more like a carpet of rich, glowing green, blending beautifully with the robin's egg blue off the house itself. The front porch was wide, with white railing and a short, three-step flight of stairs leading up to it. Oddly, there was only one door in the middle of the structure, directly between the two swings, one each at either end.
A light hand touched her shoulder, and she looked around to find her mother now beside her. Looking up at the older blonde woman, she gave her a faint smile in an attempt at reconciliation. Yui grinned back down at her and the two walked together up to the screen door, taking the short trip slowly because of Yui's single crutch.
Finally they reached the screened portal and shared a slightly scared look, and then Shunkaku raised one finger to the dimly lighted button, paused for a moment, then punched it. Yui grabbed her daughter's hand, and squeezed it tightly. Perhaps they should have just let themselves in, they did have a key after all; but with the door behind the screen closed like this, and the absence of separate doors... could they have gotten the directions wrong? Or possibly the address?
It was a few moments, then they heard running footsteps inside and then the heavy wooden door was thrown open and a young girl stood staring at them from behind the screen. She was almost as tall as Shunkaku, but didn't look like she could be more than fourteen. She wore her -Green?!-hair up in two, plated pigtails tied with yellow ribbons, and a pale yellow T-shirt of no identifiable brand with stained, ripped and recently muddied pants. The sneakers that graced her feet were just as scruffy, though their red and white colours were still identifiable.
Before either one of the women could say anything though, the girl grinned and said brightly, "You must be our new neighbors, right?! Why didn't you just come on in?" Once again, she overrided any sound they could have made by shouting over her shoulder, "HEY! THEY'RE HEEERREEEE!!"
"What was that Yuiren?" A masculine voice sounded behind her, before a tall lad came into view.
A/N: ahhhh, yeah, I have no idea what Yuiren's original colour scheme was and didn't feel like looking it up >^.^<;; I'm hopeless. But hey, it's reincarnation; she can look different, ne? heh.. heheh.. heh... yeah... ::ducks and runs from the angry mob of Yuiren fans::
