Forgotten Warrior

Prelude
~***~

How beautiful the day and night,
the earth is singing in the wind,
the voices rise and touch the sky
telling all the earth's believing,
and in the night sighs fall down,
and from the skies sighs fall down on me.

"You still dare to fight against me, mortal?"

The words rang in my skull, making my teeth numb. Seiryuu was gloating me, I knew, but I was determined to face him and be victorious. I had let my pride get to my head, and now I had to defeat him or die.

"I'll keep going!" I shouted at him. "And I'll do anything it takes to finish you off!"

Seiryuu's cruel smirk made me feel sick. "You're not even a seishi, and yet you think you can do damage. I suppose I must end this encounter quickly, lest you hurt yourself too much."

"I don't care about that! Your damn seishi killed my family!"

Seiryuu chuckled and made a sword of his chi in his hand. "I'll give you my word that I am indeed fully responsible for my seishi's actions. Unfortunately, you will not live to avenge your family's death!"

He lunged at me, and I raised a magic shield around me. It took nearly all I had just to block the god's unnatural power, and I could feel my own strength draining. The light from the completed circuit of Seiryuu's chi and my magic nearly blinded me, probably making my white hair even paler.

Finally Seiryuu broke away, and I fought for my breath. He laughed at me and said smugly, "I'm really surprised. No mortal has been able to fight me off like that. Must be something to do with that bitch of a demi-goddess you call Mother."

"Don't tempt me, Seiryuu," I hissed. "Leave my mother out of this."

"Really," Seiryuu said with a wicked glint in his eye. "I can feel that your magic is nearly gone. Victory will soon be mine."

"I don't care!" I shouted, and let loose a powerful blast of white magic.

Seiryuu was knocked back into the far wall of the Shinzaho. I collapsed to my knees, weakened. That blast was the last one I had in me, and I knew that little else could defeat Seiryuu, nothing that I had.

I slowly looked up and frowned. The blast had been enough to send Seiryuu back to the astral plane. But I hadn't killed him...I hadn't avenged my family...and now I was dying...

I fell forward, waiting to welcome death. "I'm sorry..." I whispered to my family's spirits. "I have failed you..."

Before the blackness came, there was a voice, a comforting and pitying voice. It was almost like my grandmother's.

"You are very brave," the voice said. "I have decided that your soul shall be kept safe until the day a seishi of Suzaku finds it, and then you shall have your revenge."

The words fell on my ears like the petals of a rose. I smiled faintly, and welcomed my fate...
