Chapter 6

Jennifer sat on the edge of the table in the Seiryu tent. They had reached it just as night was falling, but she still couldn't sleep. She had been introduced to Yui as a Seishi of the god Kaelar. Yui hadn't understood how that worked, so Nakago had explained it to her as he would to a small child. Jennifer thought that that was rude and unnecessary, but then again she didn't have any power over here and it would do her well to remember that. Meeting Soi had been an ordeal. If she couldn't stand the tramps that went to her school, she couldn't even bare to hear Soi speak. She was disgusted by all that she felt from Soi and decided to change her plan of action and just not bring her along. She would cause more problems than she would solve as long as she didn't give Nakago a reason to once again display the fact that he thought them all expendable.

She sighed and looked over at Suboshi who was sitting in a chair facing the direction of Yui's tent. She had watched his reaction when he saw her and was mildly surprised. Sure, she had known that he loved her, but at the time she had thought that it was just infatuation and that he had died before he could recognize the difference, but that look that he gave her... She shuddered; it spoke louder than words ever could. He truly was in love with her, but he was in agony over the way she was acting in regards to her "rape." Jennifer was a little miffed by that too, but then again, she had never been raped and hoped to never experience it. Despite the fact that Yui wasn't technically raped, she had still been sexually abused and still had the mental and emotional trauma suffered by a victim. The only thing she really lacked was the physical part.

Jennifer sighed again and shook her head. It was all too involved. She didn't know how she was going to make this work. She had to get Suboshi, Yui, Miboshi, if they ever found him, and, regrettably, Tomo. Leaving Tomo alone with just Soi and Nakago would be like handing him over to the executioner. This, once again, defeated the whole purpose. She took in a deep breath to sigh again, but start coughing instead. Suboshi turned and looked at her worriedly. He got some water from the table that was near him and handed her a cup. She gulped it down gratefully, but as soon as it was gone, she just went into a coughing fit again. "Are you alright?" Suboshi asked. She vaguely acknowledged that they were of a level when she was sitting there on the table and he was standing.

"I think so. I used to get a cough all of the time during the early spring, but I didn't get one last year, and it's only late winter." Suboshi made a slight noise as if her were thinking about what she had said, he leaned closer to her, to feel if she had a fever, but right before he touched her, the tent flew open and Nakago stalked in. The look that he had on his face confused Jennifer, so she did a quick visual of how that scene would have looked from the opening of the tent. She mentally snorted when she came to the conclusion that Nakago must have thought that they were kissing, or some other stupid pointless action. Granted, she didn't think that the act was pointless, but she was sure that Nakago did.

Nakago stood in the middle of the room and raised an eyebrow at her. She only raised one back at him. He scowled and then finally got to the reason why he was here. "As I'm sure that you both already know," he inserted another scowl in her direction, "the Suzaku Seishi and Miko are going to Sairo to find the second Shinzaho. We are going to wait for them to retrieve it and then steal it form them rather than trying to do battle with the guardians. They won't think that we will do the same thing twice and that is their mistake." He glared at her, "Do you have any problems with that, Tarakai?" She shrugged in response.

"I don't care, all that that entails is less wandering and less opportunities for you all to kill each other. I'm a lazy person on the inside, of course I don't mind." She shook her head, as if at a child who was being chided for missing something obvious. He scowled at her again before stalking out of the room. His exit lost the effect, however, when she burst into another coughing fit. He spun around, with his hand still on the exit.

"You had better not die for all of the trouble you are causing." Jennifer was about to say something smart when she started coughing again and had to lean over to get enough air into her lungs. Suboshi came around behind her and put a hand on her back. When she looked back up Nakago was already gone, but because she had been so concentrated on coughing she had missed when he had left. She and Suboshi looked at each other with a slight question in their eyes. Suboshi was the first to speak.

"What do you think that comment was all about? Sure, you annoy him to no end, but you haven't really caused any trouble, yet." He paused and inserted a big grin before the "yet." Jennifer just shook her head and rolled her eyes.

"I don't know. He's just exhausting to be around. He's just exhausting in general. I can sort of "feel" what all of the Seishi are feeling, but it's only vague and confusing, so all that it does is make things harder on me." She started coughing again.

"Well, it only makes sense that you would, because essentially, you share a simliar bond with all of the Seishi to the one that I share with Amiboshi."

"Oh, that reminds me," she pulled up her sleeve and coughed more, "Amiboshi told me to show you this as a token that he doesn't think I'm evil, or some sort of similar thing. And, you also have another brother... sort of. He was born into my world, but he is basically the same as the two of you. That's why I ran to Amiboshi when I first saw him; he just looked so much like my friend Mark. Well, Kaelar told me that he really is another twin, or rather a triplet, but I like the word twin better." Suboshi's eyes grew wide.

"Really? Oh, wait, was he hurt last night? Was that him that I felt?"

"Amiboshi said that it was him and since obviously it wasn't you and it wasn't Amiboshi, it does, sort of leave him. Oh, right, I forgot. Amiboshi also wanted me to tell you that Mark was the cause of all of those strange dreams that he was having. Seiryu connected them through dreams so that way Mark could tell me about this world and I would know what was going on before I got here."

"Oh, I see. That explains how you knew so much already... But still, you know things that Amiboshi could have no way of knowing... I don't understand that." She thought about how to tell him. It was hard to explain. She started coughing again and shifted a bit on her "seat."

"Well... There were these books in my world. They were called, "Fushigi Yuugi," which means The Mysterious Play, or something similar." He nodded and she continued, "They basically told the story of what happens here, except that it was mostly from Miaka's point of view. The books told the story up through the point where both Suzaku and Seiryu have been summoned and everyone except for Tasuki and Chichiri are dead. Miaka and Yui end up going to their world and Tamahome is reincarnated." She started coughing halfway through and had to take another drink of water.

"Since you know more about what's going to happen to the Suzaku Seishi than you do of us, you are here just to be on the safe side with your task even though it is physically more dangerous." She nodded that he should continue. "So what do you know of us?"

"Not that much really. But I do know that Yui was never raped. Nakago just wants her to think that she was so that he can have more power over her. If Yui never finds out what really happened than she will never forgive Miaka." She started coughing so hard then that she had to stop talking. Her face was turning red and her already raw throat hurt terribly.

"Why don't we talk-" "The general wants you to drink this, it will cure your cough." A servant scared the wits out of both of them by coming up so silently. She offered up the cup and then went out of the tent without as much as a backwards glance.

"Efficient place isn't it?" Jennifer said dryly before drinking the glass. Her throat still hurt and she still wanted to cough, but she kept her mouth shut in hopes that the feeling would go away soon.

"As I was saying, we'll talk more about it tomorrow. But, one thing, what do you think I should do to keep Nakago from killing me or drugging me again? I really don't want that."

"Be compliant, or better yet, not anywhere that he can see you. Out of sight, out of mind." He nodded then left the tent himself. Jennifer sighed getting off of the table. She drank another glass of water and followed him out, but then went to her own tent.

Suboshi was worried about Tarakai as he laid down and looked up at the ceiling of his tent. Her coughing had sounded really bad. He'd only been sick like that once, but hearing her say that it normally happened was a terrible thought. He would hate to have the same sickness every year and have to dread its coming. He yawned and thought about what she had said. She had mentioned that he had another brother, in her world. How did that work anyways? How could his brother have been born into another world? He didn't know. The gods were meddling a great deal in the lives of the Seishi as it was, it should be no surprise that this had happened. He sighed and rolled onto his side looking over in the direction that Yui's tent was.

He couldn't believe it. Had she really not been... Violated? Could that be true? Could her savior actually be causing her more pain and harm than good? He wasn't sure, but he knew that this could potentially be very beneficial to him. The only problem was that he couldn't tell Yui himself. She wouldn't believe anything that he said against Nakago; she would only think that he was jealous. Of course, he was, but that didn't change the fact of what Nakago had done.

He shook his head. Tarakai was right, it was all very involved. He would have to walk very carefully the next few days and see what he could do. He hoped Tarakai would tell Yui the truth as soon as possible. But that made him worry about Tarakai. Nakago knew that Tarakai knew more than she should about everything, so he had to assume that she knew that Yui had never been raped. That meant that he knew she was a threat to his control over the Priestess. That put her in danger as well. He sighed again. It was all just too much.

--------------------------------------------------

Mark yawned, waking up. If there was no other advantage to the whole big mess that had now become his life, it was that he no longer woke up more Amiboshi than Mark. Of everything involved with the Universe of the Four Gods hitherto, that had been the very worst. Of course, the worst now was that fact that Jennifer was missing and everyone believed him to be involved in the disappearance. He couldn't blame them. It was his fault that she was gone. She had used him as a medium to get to the other world because she had wanted to save Amiboshi, his brother. No, not him, his brother.

He sighed. It had never been him. They had always just been friends. That was all because he was too afraid to tell her how he really felt and risk their friendship and now she was gone and they had nothing between them but memories. She wasn't even going to be in his dreams anymore. She had left Amiboshi and was now somewhere where he couldn't see her. She was gone and from what he was feeling from Amiboshi she was in danger, too. He now, more than ever, wanted the dreams to stop. It had been bad enough when he had been in love with her himself, but having to feel his brother be in love with her and know that he had a much better chance of actually being with her was heart breaking.

He sighed and looked at her CD player which she had apparently dropped before going over to the other world. She had always had a CD player or an MP3 player or something with music in it on her at all times. She always was wearing headphones, even if they weren't connected to anything she's wear them, but now she would never wear them again because there was no way that she was going to live to find a way back home. He just knew that she would die trying to fulfill her task. He just knew and that, perhaps, was the worst.

He got dressed and walked downstairs to the living room. The day she had left had been Friday, so that made today Sunday, which meant that his family was no where to be seen. That didn't bother him too much, they were never around, they didn't like him. It all made sense now. Why his parents had always hated him. His father had hated him because he didn't look like his son and his mother hated him because he was "proof" that she had had an affair. She had, of course, but she had never thought that his father would find out. They hadn't gotten a blood test, they hadn't bothered, it was obvious that he was no child of his father's. Of course, now that was turning out to be completely false and he wished that they had. It was too late now though. Even if it was proved that he was his father's blood, which he was, his looks just came from his brothers, their hatred for him was too deeply ingrained into their minds for them to ever treat him nicely.

He fought back tears as he immersed himself in self-pity. He hadn't done so since he'd met Jennifer, she had had her own reasons to dwell in self-pity and he had spent most of his time keeping her from doing just that. Now it was turning out to have been a waste of time. He sighed and sat down in one of the kitchen chairs. There just wasn't much left for him. He wanted to end his own life, but he had spent too much time around Jennifer to be able to actually do it. He knew that if he did she would never forgive him because she'd know. And she would hate him for giving up, for taking the easy way out when she was trapped in some unknown world with only his brothers for relative company.

He laid his head on the table and prayed that she would be alright. Prayed that he would at very least get to see her once again before they died.
