Houjun grimaced as the gavel hit the judges bench. "Guilty, Guilty." it echoed through his head. Yes, he was guilty, guilty of killing his best friend and fiancee.

He opened his good eye, the right one, and stood up trying to look confident, but his still bandaged left eye suddenly gave him a sharp pang of pain. He cried out a bit. Putting his hand to the source of the pain he ripped the bandage off, the revealing a bloody red gash of his left eye. The air stung as it hit the wound.

Houjun just stood there as his sentence was read. "Li Houjun you are sentenced to 20 years in prison for your crime. May God have mercy on your soul."

*I'll be almost in my fifties by then,* he thought to himself glumly, *But it's what I deserve for what I did.*

His attorney patted him on the shoulder reassuringly. Houjun just ignored the man, not really caring.

A guard came up and grabbed Houjun's hands pulling them behind his back roughly. There was the feel of cold steel and sound of a click as handcuffs were slapped on Houjun's wrists. The guard then took his arm and led him past the judge's bench and out a door.

Houjun let himself be pushed down the stairs and into the back of a waiting police car. Shutting the door the guard spoke a moment to the cop and then retreated back inside the courthouse.

Getting in the cop started the engine and drove. Houjun sighed and looked out the window not really watching the world blur past. The words guilty were still echoing through his mind when the police car pulled up to the station.

A cop came and opened the door helping him out. All he could think with disgust was, *Yay, home sweet home.*

Taking him by the arm the cop took him into the station and put him in one of the holding cells. Taking the handcuffs off the cop left locking the cell door behind him.

Rubbing his wrists absent mindedly, Houjun laid down on the small bed. He stared at the ceiling numbly, his hands behind his head. He didn't bother looking at the cell around him anymore, after living here for the past month he knew what it looked like, with a toilet and sink over in the opposite corner and then this bed, there wasn't much else. Besides he would be living in one for the next 20 yrs. He snorted in disgust, mainly at himself.

He heard the cell door opened but didn't bother taking his eye of the ceiling, he already knew that it was the Kiuka, the visiting nurse. She came everyday to redress his eye.

She tsked at the absence of the bandage, "Houjun, you need to leave the bandage on."

He looked at her out of the corner of his eye and shrugged.

She quickly brought out the supplies that she would need to attend to the wound from her case. Then soaking a soft cloth with Peroxide, Kiuka firmly but gently held it over Houjun's left eye.

Houjun winced as the sterilizer made contact. He held his breath when the liquid started working itself into the wound, stinging as it did so.

Finally the stinging pain was too much for him to bare and was going to remove the offending cloth, when the nurse noticed the dangerous look in Houjun's eye.

Removing the cloth, she smiled at him, her voice as soft as always, "You really need to quit exposing it to the air. If you kept the bandage on there would be less germs and this wouldn't sting so."

He shrugged and turned his head away from her, making it his injury inaccessible.

"How did you get the gash anyway?"

He shrugged in answer, not really caring that he was being rude.

She sighed and shook her head as she prepared the salve and bandage. Finally done she took his chin and turned his face so that she could tend to the wound.

Putting a thick coat of salve over the deep jagged cut, she took the prepared bandage and quickly secured it. Satisfied with her work Kiuka started cleaning up her supplies and put them away.

Houjun sat up and looked at her.

"How did you get that gash?" she asked again.

Houjun started a bit shocked that she had now asked twice in one day. He was curious as to why she was so persistent but let indifference take control of him instead. Looking down he mumbled, "About a month ago."

"I didn't ask when. I asked how."

He shrugged again, he was doing that a lot these days he thought, and studied the floor.

Sighing Kiuka picked up her case, "Well, then I hope that you live through prison." She turned and left giving him a bit of a sad look.

His eye widened in realization. He would never see her again, for tomorrow he would be going to Gouwa Prison, not to come out until 20 yrs. later.

Getting up Houjun went to the small barred window and watched as people came and went from the parking lot.

He sighed feeling numb and depressed. He made himself feel numb so he couldn't feel the pain of what had happened. But he was depressed for his once bright future was now suddenly dark and lonely. For who knew what prison would hold.

Hearing his cell door creak open, Houjun turned to see an officer bringing in a tray of food.

"Eat up, boy," the cop said looking at him, "For you won't get this good of food for a long time."

"Nani?' Houjun inquired.

The cop grinned and left, the door slamming slightly.

Houjun looked at the tray of food and snorted. They didn't even trust him with actual dishes, instead they gave him plastic and Styrofoam. Although he should be used to it by now, but it still bothered him.

Setting on his bed he picked up the tray of food and picked at the mashed potatoes and meatloaf. Finally tired of trying to make himself eat he set the tray on the floor. Even though it was barely evening he stretched out on his bed, hoping that sleep would come quickly, but instead it was slow in coming like it had been for the last few months.

But when sleep finally did come, so did the nightmare.

Rain cascaded down his face as he glared at his friend with hatred, "How? How could you betray me, Hikou!?"

"Just once I wanted to see how it felt to hold her in my arms!" Hikou yelled back, "Just once!"

"You betrayed me!" with this he lunged at Hikou with the knife in his hand and stabbed his friend.

Hikou stumbled back in surprise the river bank dissolving under his weight, it being soft from so much rain, falling in to the river Houjun dropped the knife and leaped forward to catch his friend's hand.

"Houjun, Help Me!!"

"I've got you! I won't let go!"

Hikou looked up and saw a log coming at them and then sudden realization hit his face, he tried to jerk free of Houjun's grip but it was strong.

"Hikou! What are you doing!?" he looked just in time to see a log coming at them and couldn't move before it hit him in his left eye. He tried to hold on to his friend's hand but the pain was too much and he failed....

Houjun woke and sat up in a cold sweat. He was breathing heavily. A guard came and shined his light in his face, "Keep quiet you. You want to wake the rest of the low lifes?" he walked on.

Houjun was a bit puzzled but as he woke up he figured he must have been yelling in his sleep again. He put his hand to his bandaged eye and took off the bandage, the air once again stinging as it hit the wound. He flinched a bit but didn't care one way or the other, for that bit of pain helped ease the pain of his realization: he was a murderer.

Laying back on the bed he wept, thinking how much he had hurt those he loved. His beloved and best friend most of all. Finally spending himself he fell asleep with this thought running through his mind, *What kind of monster kills those closest to him?*
