Part One

Hotohori

Emperor Saite, also known as the celestial warrior Hotohori, sat in his Imperial room staring at his reflection in one of many ornate mirrors located on this wall. He stared at his face, searching for a flaw that he'd long-since convinced himself didn't exist.

He'd found the Lady Miaka, his priestess and his object of infatuation, in Lord Tamahome's bed last night. He'd known for a long time now that Miaka didn't love him, could never love him, as her whole heart had been given to Tamahome. But it still... broke his heart more than he could say.

He searched for the flaw that Miaka had recognized in him, and once again he was almost disappointed when he could find nothing that didn't scream that he was beautiful. He knew he was beautiful, and so did everyone else. So then, once again, he reasoned that his inherent flaw must be within his personality. Unacceptable. Hotohori sighed, and got up from his mirrored perch, suddenly not wanting to look at himself any longer. He felt the sudden urge to draw his holy sword and smash each of these mirrors into distortion, but mastered it and instead turned away.

Taking off his Imperial clothing and ridiculous hat, he donned the crimson yukata he slept in and slipped himself into bed, determined to think of something else in his dreams. he soon found, however, that sleep was far from him. Everytime he closed his eyes, an image consisting of his beautiful priestess swam into his vision. Miaka laughing, her brown eyes swimming with humor, Miaka, her arm around Tamahome, leaning in to give his naked shoulder a gentle kiss.

he snapped his eyes open, banishing that train of thought. he jumped from his bed, turning and striding from his room determinedly. He started to let out a growl of frustration, something that would betray his displeasure but not the deep hurt that spawned that displeasure. It didn't work. The growl quickly turned into a moan of sadness, and he felt tears coming to prick at his eyelashes as he lowered them in shame. If any of the warriors saw him now, what would they think?

Finding after several minutes of struggling with himself that he could not control the tears, he ducked back into his room and retrieved an equally crimson, gold-trimmed robe, which he slipped on over the yukata. He stepped outside again and headed toward a grove of Mangrove trees, determined to find solace alone.

No one was outside on this beautiful may evening, and that suited him perfectly. He ducked past his own guards, and leaned against a gazebo post, watching a man-made stream flow through his grounds. He watched the fireflies and mosquitoes going about their business, and let the tears come, trying not to think while he did so. Trying hard not to let even a single thought come to his mind. Surprising even himself, he found that in this place, there was no need to think. He sat down in the grass, letting his mind contemplate such trivial things as the muggy air around him, and the many mosquito bites he was sure to be accumulating. Sighing halfway contentedly, he was finally able to gain a troubled sort of sleep.

Nuriko

Nuriko was also unable to sleep. He had been thinking about his emperor, Hotohori. He had seen which bed Miaka had chosen to sleep in tonight, and he was wondering how his Imperial bishounen was taking it. He imagined Hotohori crying himself to sleep, and frowned absently. He hoped that wasn't right.

He was just about to let his thoughts wander to the usual fantasies he indulged himself in when he was alone , when he heard the faint whistling of an arrow. It clipped a lock of hair from his head, and Nuriko gasped, glancing around, trying in the few seconds before the man had time to shoot again to find him.

His eyes rested on a black-robed person of indeterminate sex. He recognized the robes as those of assassins from Kutou and balled his hands into fists while the assassin nocked another arrow.

"tell me where the celestial warrior Hotohori is!" the man demanded, taking aim. Nuriko sneered. "Like hell!" he yelled, running toward the man and catching him straight on the chin with his right and grabbing the bow with his left hand. The man flew, arms waving in a comic attempt to keep himself in the air.

Nuriko smirked, glad to be on more familiar ground, then heard another faint whistle behind him. He barely missed being shot in the back as he rolled, the arrow whizzing menacingly over his head. He whirled around, seeing two more assassins. Both had crossbows out, loaded, and both had them leveled toward his heart. He knew if he moved now he would be very dead, and attempted to stay as still as possible.

"Where is the celestial warrior Hotohori?" one of them asked again. "We will not harm you if you tell us" the other encouraged. neither moved their crossbows. Nuriko snorted at them. He could never betray his beloved emperor to these suspicious people. He would rather die.

A loud yell, almost a scream, penetrated the silence of the courtyard. both assassins looked at each other knowingly, and then at Nuriko. They bowed, then promptly disappeared into the shadows. "what was that about?" Nuriko muttered, not sure whether or not to follow and get involved. Another yell broke the silence of the night, and Nuriko could almost distinguish the word. Stop. He frowned, the voice seemed familiar.

"Highness!" Nuriko shouted, and ran as fast as he could in the approximate direction the scream had come from, hurtling over bushes and streams. It started to rain on his head, but Nuriko ignored it and ran faster. 'Highness!' he promised in his mind. 'I'll save you!'

End of Part One

Yes, yes, I realize it's short, and confusing, but hey, there's always next chapter, provided you review anyway. Just to give you incentive, I warn you that next chapter is really one of the big smutty chapters (Not the big one but pretty graphic) and DOES contain some nonconsensual limey goodness! But if that scares you away, I wonder ....why did you look at my fic in the first place?
