Chapter 1: Then There Were Four
Gojyo smiled and waved as the car took off then turned and sauntered into his apartment complex.
It was more of a big house really - the owner graciously rented out the place to the college students because it was pretty close to the campus.
Damn. Now I have to find a way to get rid of her, he thought, making his way to the kitchen, I knew I shouldn’t have picked her up but I had too much to drink and she was sweet.
His smile widened thinking about just how sweet she had been but then he shuddered remembering how she had insisted on having him sleep over last night and then driving him home this morning. He was definitely not going back to that bar again anytime soon.
Sure sex was great but only the type that came without strings.
He yawned as he walked into the room and saw his friend.
“You’re up early. What for? We got no classes today.” Gojyo greeted, leaning casually in the doorway of the kitchen observing the man at the stove as he expertly prepared breakfast.
“And you’re up late. Don’t tell me you were finally ensnared. You never stay the night with them.” Hakkai responded, smiling pleasantly at the other house’s occupant.
Gojyo paled, looking ill. “Tenkai forbid. I just got a major clinger this time. I am never getting that plastered again, Hakkai.”
Hakkai’s bright laugh rang in the room as Gojyo made his way to the table and snagged a chair, dropping himself unceremoniously on it.
“Well,” Hakkai conceded, “It is still rather early, but I need to go pick up Goku and Sanzo from the airport.”
“Huh?” Gojyo snatched a piece of bread off Hakkai’s plate as the man sat at the table to eat.
“Gojyo!” he admonished, “I made enough for you too, don’t take mine! Anyway, did you already forget that I told you about those two? Honestly, do you ever listen to me.” It was more of statement than a question.
“Of course I do, Kai,” Gojyo said, feigning hurt. He scoured his brain trying to recall anything Hakkai may have mentioned about people and airports.
“Yeah, I remember! Those are your two friends who are gonna start taking classes this semester right?”
“That’s right and I expect you to be nice to them Gojyo, they will be living with us, after all.”
The juice he’d just downed (also stolen from Hakkai) caught in his throat half way and wound up going down the wrong tube. He coughed and sputtered furiously until Hakkai calmly stood and walked around the table to whack Gojyo on the back several times.
Harder than the situation merits I’d say, Gojyo thought a little sourly.
“L-li,” *cough cough* “Liv-”
“Yes Gojyo,” Hakkai said a bit impatiently. “Sanzo and Goku are going to be living with us.”
Well . . . shit.
“Oh, come on Kai, can’t they stay at the dorms, or rent somewhere else?” he pleaded, his lips dangerously close to pouting. Not that his pouting had ever worked on Hakkai. The hard ass.
“No Gojyo,” the redhead nearly rolled his eyes, he’d known Hakkai was going to say that.
But maybe there was still hope.
“But Kai -”
“Absolutely not,” Hakkai said resolutely, adopting the tone of voice he used when dealing with the more difficult students he tutored. “you know as well as I that we cannot afford to rent this house on only our combined salaries. It would be better if the people we rented to were friends and not strangers, right?”
“Yeah,” Gojyo agreed reluctantly, “we saw how well rooming with strangers went.”
The idiots that they had been renting to before were always late on their part of the rent and making excuses for themselves. Hakkai decided he’d finally had it when they’d thrown a party and nearly destroyed every piece of furniture in the house. Morons that they were they’d tried to intimidate Hakkai. They soon learned better.
“ --ve. I’ll talk to them.”
With a jolt Gojyo realized Hakkai was still talking.
“Sorry man, wuz that?”
Hakkai gave him a slightly irritated look. “I said, that maybe you’re right. I didn’t really speak to you about this. I dumped this on you last minute and while they may not be strangers to me, they will be to you. If you have anybody else in mind I can talk to them-”
Hakkai came to an abrupt halt as Gojyo shook his head and held up his hand.
“Don’t worry about it, Kai. They’re your friends so they gotta be pretty cool ya’ know? Besides I don’t think I’d wanna room with any of the people I know.” He shuddered.
Hakkai smiled gratefully, “Thank you very much Gojyo, although . . . I should probably warn you-”
Gojyo sighed loudly, interrupting Hakkai yet again. “You worry way too much man. It’ll be cool.” He clapped a hand on Hakkai’s shoulder. “Well I gotta go grab a shower and then hit the sack, I’m exhausted. She was quite the wildcat, you know?”
The redhead laughed loudly as green eyes widened and a dark blush stole over those fair cheeks.
“Gojyo, you’re incorrigible.” Hakkai huffed, exasperated.
“And you’re a shrew. I keep telling you, you need to go out more, but do you ever listen to me? No and that’s -”
Hakkai smiled, listening to the other man’s fading voice as he made his way to his bedroom, amazed once again at the easy and instantaneous friendship that had sprung up between them despite, or maybe because of, their completely opposite personalities.
Where he was studious, Gojyo had to be prodded into picking up a book of his own volition. Where he was an intellectual, Gojyo was the resident bad boy complete with his devil-may-care attitude. Where he was neat and tidy, Gojyo was completely uncaring of what he left lying around, or where he left it - Hakkai still had bruises from the time he’d slipped on the redhead’s ashtray and fallen halfway down the stairs. And where he had green eyes, Gojyo’s were the most fascinating color - if such a thing existed he would have called them blood red. But of course there was no such thing as red eyes. He’d always thought them to be a strange hybrid of brown and some other color. He didn’t know what color eyes Gojyo’s parents had. He wondered about the eye color of his own parents.
Shaking himself out of his musings, which were taking a turn for the worse, Hakkai wondered for the umpteenth time if Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo and himself living under one roof was such a great idea. Sure they were all his friends but he winced thinking about Sanzo and Gojyo in particular. He had a feeling he would not want for the opportunity to play referee.
What have I gotten myself into?

K, Chapter 1 is finished. Writing it wasn‘t as bad as I thought it would be =). Please review and tell me what you think whether you want me to continue with the story or not. It’s pretty pointless if nobody is enjoying it.
