Part Three: Missteps ...

One eye opened. Gojyo could tell by just opening that eye that the sun hadn't quite come up yet. A warm slender body was pressed close against his chest. The faint smell of Hakkai's shampoo was tickling his nose. He wasn't sure why he was awake yet. Hakkai was the early riser. Deciding there must have been some outside noise that woke him from his blissful slumber, he snuggled closer to Hakkai, letting his hand slide beneath the man's shirt to lightly caress the scar that brought them into each others lives in the first place.

Gojyo felt himself start to sink back into the abyss of sleep when he felt a tug in his hair. A rather hard vicious tug nearly making the hair come out of his scalp. Reflexively he grabbed the abused hair, yanking it back hard and turning around to glare at who would do such a thing.

"Temee," he growled before he stopped and blinked.

"KYUU!!!!" Hakuryu hissed back at him.

"What the ...!!!" Gojyo was speechless for a moment. "Why the hell are you trying to make me bald?"

"Kyuuuu!" Hakuryu replied his eyes glowing an eerie red.

"Is something wrong?" Hakkai asked as he stretched and turned to see Gojyo and the little dragon glaring at each other.

"He tried to yank my hair out!" Gojyo explained before turning back to look at Hakuryu.

Hakuryu flew over to Hakkai to land delicately on his keeper's chest, blinked rather innocently before responding with a shy, "kyu."

"He's lying!" Gojyo yelled before he realized he must look like an idiot arguing with an animal.

"Gojyo are you sure you didn't misinterpret what happened? Maybe he was accidentally standing on your hair or something?" Hakkai asked as he slowly petted the little dragon.

Gojyo knew when to pick his battles and fighting over Hakuryu wasn't a battle worth fighting. He also felt a slight bit of jealousy. Instead Hakkai's hands stroking down the dragon's long neck those hands would serve better stroking his ...

"Sure, whatever," Gojyo muttered, wanted to reach for his cigarettes but knowing he would have to do that elsewhere. Hakkai really didn't like smoke. "So should we get ready to go?"

Hakkai looked outside the window, the sun was just starting to peek out over the horizon. "It's still a little early yet." He moved Hakuryu over to his basket which served as a bed for the little dragon. "Would you like to try and go back to sleep? Or ..."

Gojyo felt his mood lightening considerably. He pulled Hakkai over to him, his lips barely touching Hakkai's. "Or what?" he said huskily.

Hakkai smiled. "I'll leave that up to you."

Gojyo kissed him. It was a hungry kiss looking to devour Hakkai's heart and soul. Gojyo had manueuvred Hakkai beneath him, as he held one hand under Hakkai's chin, the other gripped the slender man's waist.

Hakkai's hands had slipped beneath Gojyo's pajama bottoms, grasping bare skin pulling him closer to him.

Gojyo appreciated the boldness and let him know by moaning out Hakkai's name. He moved to nibble on the limiters that clung to his left ear feeling Hakkai shiver under him. He licked a long path down Hakkai's neck again nibbling and leaving tiny marks as the other gasped and bucked underneath him.

Next target, the spot where neck and shoulder meet. Just a small bite, a little harder than the others before he pulled back with a pained shriek.

"KYU!!" Hakuryuu angrily proclaimed as he took the nails of his feet to scratch a deep gash in Gojyo's shoulder.

"DAMMIT!" Gojyo yelled, sitting up and trying to turn to look at his injury.

"Hakuryu!" Hakkai shouted in surprised when he saw what the dragon had done. The dragon realizing he couldn't feign innocence a second time flew out of the open window. Hakkai ran over to the window to see which direction the white dragon flew in, before returning to Gojyo to look at the rather ugly jagged scratch down Gojyo's back.

"Gomen nasai Gojyo," Hakkai apologized as he grabbed a towel to press down on the wound that was starting to bleed a little. "I didn't realize."

"It's okay, Hakkai," Gojyo replied. "We were so worried about Sanzo's reaction to us, I guess we should have considered Hakuryu's as well. One of us is going to have to talk to him."

"I agree," Hakkai said as he leaned over to kiss the shoulder blade that wasn't injured. "I think you need to be the one."

"ME?!? Why me?"

"Because I had to have the talk with Sanzo. It's your turn."

"But ... how do you talk to an animal? It's not like I can tell one 'kyu' from another," Gojyo huffed. "Besides you seem to understand him better."

"It seemed you two were communicating just fine when I woke up," Hakkai said with a smile.

Gojyo sighed, "Okay." He looked over at Hakkai who still seemed a little upset about Hakuryu's escape. He knew there was no 'getting back to where they were' before the drama played out. "Should we go look for him?"

Hakkai attempted to school his face into a less worried one and said, "I'm sure he'll come back."

"Let's get dressed and see if we can rustle up breakfast. They we'll come up with a plan," Gojyo said.

They were half way through breakfast before Sanzo and Goku arrived.

"We are going to go look for Hakuryu," Hakkai explained as Sanzo and Goku looked at him strangely.

"Why do you need to do that?" Goku asked.

"There was a little misunderstanding that's all," Gojyo said, ignoring the pointed stare Sanzo was giving him.

"He saw something he didn't like?" Sanzo asked.

"Maybe," Gojyo answered. "Let's go Hakkai."

"We leave in two hours," Sanzo snarled at them.

"Not if we can't find Hakuryu," Hakkai pointed out. "We probably won't take that long." The two men left.

"What was that all about?" Goku asked Sanzo.

"Nevermind, just eat," Sanzo gritted out.

Gojyo and Hakkai were both startled to see Hakuryu in his jeep form in front of the hotel.

"Hakuryu!" Hakkai cried out happily. "I'm so glad you're back!"

Gojyo slid behind the wheel before turning to Hakkai. "We're going to have a little talk. We'll see you later. Let's go Hakuryu."

The jeep refused to start.

Hakkai couldn't decide if he was amused by the dragon's stubbornness or annoyed that he was treating Gojyo that way. "Hakuryu, please go with Gojyo. It won't be long. We'll have to leave in a few hours."

The jeep still refused to start.

Hakkai sighed, "Move over and I'll..."

"Nope, this is between him and me. We'll see you later," Gojyo grounded out equally as stubborn. "If we have to have our talk here and I have to look like an idiot talking to a car, then so be it."

Hakkai nodded and walked back into the hotel lobby. He turned when he heard the peel of tires as Gojyo and Hakuryu sped off.

Gojyo attempted to not look as panicked as he felt while Hakuryu went flying at top speeds along the countryside. He was thankful that he put on a seat belt. After about twenty minutes the jeep stopped.

Motor still running, Hakuryu squeaked out a "kyu."

Gojyo laughed. "Oh no, I'm not falling for that. If I get out of the jeep, you'll just transform and leave me here. That ain't gonna happen."

"Kyu!"

Gojyo's hand tighten on the seat belt still fastened on his lap. "Nope!"

Suddenly with a boom sound, Hakuryu had transformed. Gojyo was sitting on the ground but still holding on to what was once the seat belt but was now the dragon's tail.

"Stop being silly and hear me out!" Gojyo yelled. "Besides we still have to go West together. Better to get this settled now don't you think?"

A resigned "Kyu" was uttered before the dragon landed and settled down on the grass before Gojyo.

"That's better," Gojyo said. He wanted to give the little dragon a pet for behaving but feared for his fingers at the moment. He let the dragon's tail go. "Let's get this talk out of the way and we can get back okay?"

"Kyu."

"I'm sure you've noticed that me and Hakkai have been acting differently towards each other. What you saw earlier might have scared you some, but I wasn't hurting Hakkai. I care for him. I care for him a lot."

"Kyu," Hakuryu said suspiciously.

"It won't be like I am with women. I'm not looking for a quick anything with him. I ... I can't believe I'm telling you this, but I've always felt this ... connection to him. From the moment I found him on a road with his guts hanging out. I thought it was just friendship and it is friendship, but it feels like more. Hakkai feels the same way. So we decided to see if we could make a go of it.

"Sure, I know the timing is bad. It would probably be better after we've finish this mission, but why put it off? Anything can happen on this trip. We told Sanzo about it. He's not thrilled but he's Sanzo. He's never thrilled about anything. I'm sure at some point we'll have to talk with Goku, not that he'll be a problem. I'm just sorry we hadn't talked to you. We are all we have and we shouldn't be fighting," Gojyo concluded.

Hakuryu looked closely at Gojyo before hesitantly flying over to land on his shoulder. "Kyu," he said softly before nuzzling the redhead's cheek as a means of apology.

Gojyo lightly stroked the dragon's long neck in return. "I'm sorry too," he said. "In the future if Hakkai and I want some alone time we'll let you stay with Goku, okay?"

"Kyu."

"Let's get back before Sanzo starts shooting innocent people because they don't have his brand of cigarettes."

The dragon flew off of Gojyo's shoulder and transformed. Gojyo got in and rubbed the dashboard. "Let's not break landspeed records getting back."

They took off at a reasonable speed. When they returned to the hotel, Sanzo and the others were waiting outside with their belongings.

"You're in that big of a hurry Sanzo?" Gojyo asked getting out to give Hakkai the driver's seat.

"Sanzo insulted the quality of the service and we were asked to ... um ... leave and not to return," Hakkai said hiding a small smile. "Is everything okay?" he asked in a low voice only heard by Gojyo.

"Yeah, we've worked it out," he replied in an equally low voice. "So you've got us thrown out of another hotel, eh Sanzo?" he yelled at the priest who was glaring at him.

"Shut up," Sanzo said with a hint of malice.

"I didn't even get to finish breakfast!" Goku whined as he climbed into the backseat. "And it was a really good breakfast too!"

Gojyo slid in next to him. "You would said that about dirt."

"No I wouldn't!"

"You wouldn't know good food if it slapped you around. Any food for you is good food."

"No it isn't! Shut up, I'm too hungry to fight with you now."

"You've got to be kidding monkey! You're always hungry."

"No, I'm not!"

"If you two don't shut up now, I'm going to make you shut up," Sanzo said, pointing his gun at the two.

"Ah, everything is back to normal, isn't it Hakuryu?" Hakkai said.

"Kyu" the jeep replied.

And it was another day filled with defeating another hundred or so youkai as they continued the trek to the West.
