CHAPTER 1

//FuckfuckuckfuckfuckFUCK!//

First of all, they had been driving for three days. The village they were supposed to arrive at two days ago wasn't there. It should have been there, but it simply wasn't. Neither one of the Sanzo-ikkou could understand it. They had followed the correct road. For crying out loud, THERE WAS NO OTHER ROAD. They couldn't possibly have been wrong.

To top that, Sanzo was out of cigarettes. This was very bad. If he had been a moody person before - and that already was an understatement - he was one mean, bitchy monk now. Nicotine loss doesn't just make one cranky, it makes a person downright aggressive. Murders have been committed for less. He would never think of asking one of Gojyo's, though. Rather suffer the withdrawal than see that self-righteous smirk on the kappa's face. "Does the great Sanzo want one of MY cigarettes?" He could already hear him say it.

After sitting in that fucking car for three days, Sanzo was balancing on the very edge of his sanity. He could smell Gojyo's damn cigarettes, heard him quarrel with Goku and Hakkai was asking him every other hour if he was alright. Finally they saw a building. Or something that used to be a building, that is.

One day it could have been a tower. Now the only thing that was left was 50 feet of debris and dust. A few walls were still standing, but it looked like they could collapse every minute. Maybe the only thing that was keeping them upright was the tangled mass of kudzu covering whole areas. The last flowers still blooming spread a pleasant, sweet smell. A smell that brought back memories Sanzo tried to ignore. No need to bring those up again at a time like this.

The entire place was guarded by a lot of youkai. Not too much to be in trouble, but enough to releave some stress.

They stopped the jeep, more than willing to get into some action. Gojyo and Hakkai stood back to back, dismembering every youkai that even looked at them funny. Goku happily thumbled around, killing all the youkai on his path. A pack of youkai approached him from behind. Before they could even think of hurting the monkey, he had already placed his staff in one's face, kicking the others to the afterworld in one swift movement.

Sanzo stood aside, aiming, firing, aiming, firing. Somehow he got away from the group and had to hide behind some rocks. He stood alone against some five youkai and had to rethink his strategy. Still, the youkai were no match for him. Sanzo killed them easily, leaving only their ashes to be taken away by the wind.

The priest took a moment to rest and refill the gun. The others would be fine without him. There, between the rocks and the kudzu he could see a small entrance. It was something he had missed the first time he looked. There wasn't a door, just a hole between the rocks. Stairs leading down. Normally he would have ignored it, but he could hear a soft noise rising from downstairs.

A child crying? Probably taken away from its parents by the youkai.

Sanzo descended down the stairs until he came into a torch lidded room. Not much there: something that looked like an altar and a lot of dust. Even the kudzu didn't reach in here. There was a small figure squatted in the corner, hidden in the shades, it's back towards Sanzo.

"In marble walls as white as milk,
Lined with skin as soft as silk.
"

"Hey!"

"Within a fountain crystal clear,
A golden apple doth appear.
"

It didn't seem to notice him.

"Hey," the priest tried again, taking a few steps towards the child.

That sound. Not like a child crying. Rather giggling. High pitched bursts of giggles.

"No doors there are to this stronghold,
Yet thieves break in and steal the gold.
"

Sanzo crooked an eyebrow and approached the child. It was wearing a filthy, brown robe with a hood over its head, covering its face in shadow. He put his hand on the child's shoulder.

"What are you doing here?" Sanzo asked, quickly losing his patience.

The child turned around.

//This is not good//

No, not a child. It had a white face. Eyes and nose seemed only black holes. Most of its teeth were missing. It grinned at him widely. There was a stench beyond anything Sanzo had ever smelled. This was worse than a pile of rotting youkai-corpses.

//Disgusting//

"Who are you? Are these your youkai?" Sanzo asked.

It grinned.

"Not mine, the Marquis'."

"What are you doing here?"

"Waiting."

It started walking around Sanzo, feeling the fabric of his robe. The priest slapped the hand away. It looked at him with curious eyes, nursing its hurt hand.

"Are you here to steal the gold?"

Sanzo sighed, "What gold?"

"I am protecting the gold. Are you here to take it away?"

"I'm not interested in any fucking gold."

Tired of the conversation, Sanzo walked back to the stairs. That thing could rot there for all he cared.

"He'll be here soon, you will do…" he heard it say behind his back.

Slowly Sanzo turned around to look at the thing. "What did you just say?"

Next thing he knew, Sanzo was thrown against the wall by some invisible force. He was seeing bright stars. Blood trickled down from his eyebrow. With two fingers he touched the wound. The skin was split from the impact with the rough, stone wall. The priest reached for his gun, but heard it fall to the ground with a clear thumb.

//Fuck//

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Sanzo felt a blow to his stomach, another one to his face. His knees gave in and he crumpled to the floor. His vision was all blurry. Vaguely he saw the thing bending over him. Not a child, not even human. Something… he had never seen before. Something very evil. He hadn't even seen it coming, hadn't even felt the slightest tinge of danger. It must have used some kind of telekinetic force, or maybe something else? Something even Sanzo had never heard of before?

"Poor man, but you see, when he comes, I have to give him something. He will get angry if I don't. I don't want him to get angry."

It stroked Sanzo's hair out of his face.

The priest lashed out, but could only hit air. Again he felt some force lifting him up, making him see all the corners of the room. He was thrown around like a rag doll. He hit his head a couple of times. His shoulder crashed several times into the wall. His knee hurt like hell after a really unlucky fall. Sanzo felt like throwing up. His stomach couldn't handle this anymore.

"Don't be like that," it said, "you will only make it worse."

Sanzo curled into a little ball on the floor. He was surrounded by pain. It ate at him, it pulled him to pieces. It was too much for him to bear. There was a dark mass of shadows looking down on him. Then the blackness came closer and closer until he could see nothing else.

He felt his robe being ripped to shreds before he lost consciousness.
