Chapter 3
It was already late, there still was no sign from Sanzo. The three of them had stopped searching and just sat there, completely lost. Goku had distanced himself a bit from the group. Gojyo decided he'd prefer Hakkai's company over being alone with his thoughts.
A small fire was burning, too little to really give off any heat. Darkness hadn't completely fallen yet, but at least this would give them some shelter against the threat of the night.
"What are you thinking?" Gojyo asked.
Hakkai started. He was sitting in the last rays of sunlight, deep in thoughts. He was holding a thin twig, dipping the point of it between the flames. Hakkai watched it turn red, but it didn't catch fire.
"There must be a way. Sanzo's still here. I can feel it. He's not too far, but we don't have much time anymore. I must figure it out!" Hakkai said, nearly out of breath. It was clear the man was torturing his mind over it. Almost as if he carried the responsibility all by himself.
Gojyo looked puzzled. He wanted to help, but had no idea how to.
"What do you mean?"
"Something is going to happen. There's an evil presence. It's coming closer and closer by the hour."
Gojyo looked at the sky. He'd say it was just an ordinary day, if Sanzo wouldn't be missing. And if this place wouldn't give him the creeps for no visible reason… It was more than just a feeling of discomfort, apprehensiveness. It was downright fear he felt. There wasn't much that could scare Sha Gojyo, but this place surely did.
"Is there anything I can do?" Gojyo asked. Hakkai looked up at him, smile back in position.
"We all need some rest, clear our heads a little. Maybe then the answers will come."
"Hai!"
Gojyo pulled Hakkai to his feet.
"Let's find Goku. We better stick together."
They found Goku curled against jeep. The boy was sleeping already. A good thing. He probably needed it the most. The monkey had nearly gone hysterics after hours of searching without any result. It had taken a lot of Hakkai's gentle words to calm him down.
Gojyo gently stroke his cheek. "Better if we let him sleep," he said.
"It's not safe here, I'll stand guard," Hakkai offered.
"No, you're the sanest one among us. We need your wits. Go to sleep, I'll watch your back."
Hakkai nodded. Though he wouldn't admit it, he was very tired.
"Thank you," he said quietly and prepared for sleep. He wondered if he would be able to. He couldn't stop thinking about Sanzo's disappearance. There had to be a solution…

"Cry, baby, cry
Put your finger in your eye
And tell your mother it wasn't I."
Again that force. The recent set of blows was really unnecessary. Every last bit of resistance had been already drained from Sanzo. He lay there, waiting for what was to come. Suddenly the ugly, little thing started walking around nervously.
"He's almost here, he's almost here! I can't wait to show him my gift. He'll be delighted!"
Sanzo felt it too. Something was coming. That force was getting stronger, the air was getting thicker. This was not good.
"The marquis is here!" it suddenly screamed and hopped away.
There was a deafening noise: as if the roof was coming down and the room was about to collapse. Sanzo curled into a little ball, covering his ears, trying to hide his nakedness for anything or anyone that would come.
From the corner of his eye he saw a shadow descending down the stairs. He was breathing heavily and dragging some heavy freight with him.
//This must be him, this is the marquis?//
He was enormous, not like anything Sanzo had ever seen before. Huge, shoulders as broad as two men. He had long, black hair, tied in a tail. He wore an outrageous black leather outfit, with buckles everywhere and heavy boots with steel pins on them. There was a mask on his face, black leather too, with zippers where the eyes and mouth should have been. And he was dragging this ridiculous big chest behind him. It wasn't a coffin, but surely a man could fit in there. It made one wonder what it was this creature was taking with him so closely.
"My present for thee…" the little one grinned.
Sanzo felt the marquis step around him, growling appreciatively.
"You did very well, I am pleased. No punishment for you this time." He handed it a small bag of gold pieces.
"You are too generous, my lord."
The little one retreated. Sanzo was left alone in the room with the marquis. Suddenly the priest was lifted in the air by his shoulder. Sanzo cringed at the pain it caused. Blunt fingers pressing hard into flesh.
"I'm really lucky today," he heard the marquis say.
Sanzo hung there, limply, not able to put up any struggle anymore, his body entirely exposed for the man to see. Marble white flesh, stained with cuts and bruises. Sanzo glared at him viciously. At least that was one thing he still could do.
"Don't. Touch. Me. You. Circus. Freak." He spoke as calm as he could.
The marquis started laughing and threw the priest to the floor.
"Beaten, yet still such a sharp tongue. Oh, you'll be fun to play with!"
Sanzo gasped at the impact with the cold stone. For a moment he was completely dazed. He saw the marquis walking towards that strange case he had been carrying. As he opened it, Sanzo tried to look what was inside, but couldn't make anything of it.
All sorts of weird devices, things he had never seen before. There was stuff in there with clasps, with pins on it, other ones looked just plain sharp, some were blunt and rotated. He couldn't place the objects, some of them looked like they belonged with a doctor. Then again, why would this marquis carry doctor's equipment with him? All these shapes and forms…
Sanzo felt an ice-cold lump in his stomach. He swallowed hard. There was sudden comprehension. He knew what was about to happen. There would not only be torture, but humiliation too. The marquis wouldn't just hurt him physically, but mentally too.
Did he really think he would be spared from such a thing because he was a priest? The sad part was, he did. He really did think that. Somewhere in his mind he knew such things existed, but they only happened to weak people. People that couldn't defend themselves. Faceless men and women that were nothing more than victims. He wasn't a victim, never been, never would be. Yet, this was really about to happen.

Hakkai bolted upright. Had it been just a dream? He had seen Sanzo. There was a man with Sanzo, tall, dressed in black leather. He did things to the priest… Hakkai sighed deeply and rubbed his eyes. Gojyo, still standing guard, gave him a worried look.
"What's the matter?"
He squatted next to Hakkai.
"A nightmare, I think I saw Sanzo."
"It was just a dream," Gojyo soothed, "doesn't mean anything."
Hakkai looked away. He couldn't possibly explain this. It hadn't felt like a dream, but like reality. It had felt much more real than him sitting here, talking with Gojyo.
"I'm not too sure," Hakkai tried.
Goku opened his eyes. "So noisy," the boy complained.
"Sorry, we didn't mean to wake you up."
"Not you, guys, but those screams."
Both Gojyo and Hakkai looked at Goku.
"What are you talking about?"
"They're getting louder and louder. I don't know where they are coming from. I can't hear who they're from."
Goku had better hearing than the rest of them. Gojyo and Hakkai closed their eyes, concentrating on any sound. There was something, very soft. It seemed far away, but it was there.
"Should we go check it out?"
Hakkai shook his head.
"It's coming closer."
The sound was getting harder. Now they could fully hear what it was. It was a person screaming, indeed. Definitely human.
"I know that voice," Gojyo said.
All of them grew pale. They all knew that voice. It was Sanzo. The screams were still getting harder. The three of them practically had to shout to understand one another.
"Where is it coming from?" Goku cried, covering his ears.
Gojyo ran around the ruins.
"Stay here!" Hakkai yelled after him, "we should stay together!"
The noise was deafening by now. Sanzo's voice. He was clearly in pain, screaming like they had never heard before. Sanzo swore when he got hurt, or he produced some irritated shout, but never something like this. This sounded like someone who was desperately terrorized. The priest would never show such weakness.
There was no way to locate the origins of that noise. It filled the entire place. Hakkai had to hold onto Goku. The boy was losing it. At this pace he would turn into his youkai form again. Then they would be in very, very big trouble.
Suddenly the noise stopped. It was silent again. The three of them looked at each other, speechless. Their ears were still ringing.
Gojyo lit a cigarette.
"We're in deep shit," he muttered, "this is more than just some filthy youkai."
"We can handle this," Hakkai smiled, "we have to." He remembered his dream, if it only was a dream. One way or the other, he wouldn't let that happen to the priest. Even if it would cost him his life.
To be continued?
