Disclaimer: Ok, I don't own the sexy Hakkai, or the gorgeous Kougaiji…so don't sue me for using Minekura-san's characters in my little story.
Hakkai simply stared at her. He couldn't possibly be seeing…her. His older sister, Denai had been taken before…before Kanan had died, taken in the same manner. Yet, here she was in the far east of Shangri-La, standing right across the room in some remote inn; looking alive and well, and…well, beautiful. He didn't think that she had seen him, but he watched her. He couldn't believe that it was really her, and was powerless to stop staring. He wasn't the only one that couldn't take his eyes from her either. Every man in the room, including Sanzo, Gojyo, and Goku, was following her every move. Suddenly, she turned and looked right at him. He felt his breath catch at the intensity in her eyes. He still wasn't sure if she had recognized him, until he saw her walk over to three musicians that happened to be staying at the inn. They, like every other man, had been watching her and were eager to do what she asked. Hakkai's doubts of whether she recognized him or not were erased as he heard the melody of their homeland. She moved to the center of the room, and began to move in the same sensuous rhythm they had moved to before she had been taken. Without either saying a word, Hakkai rose and walked over to her. No words were needed. They used their bodies to talk to each other as they moved with each other in a dance only they knew.
When the music ended, she looked up into his eye and smiled. Until she saw his limiters that is. As she ran a finger over the cuffs on his ear, she seemed to grow very sad. It hurt him to see the tears gathering in her eyes.
“I had hoped that the rumors were false. I prayed that you had not become like me.”
It was only after she said this that Hakkai noticed the crown she wore that was a more elegant version of the one Goku wore. She also wore the same ear cuffs as he did, and a youkai limiter bracelet.
“Why so many Denai?”
She sighed, arms still wrapped around him. He didn't mind, it had been a long time since Denai had held him, comforted him.
“The youkai in me is much stronger than normal. So, I needed extra protection. I do not know why it is like this with me.”
“But how did this happen?” he asked
Her eyes seemed to harden as she looked up at him.
“You know how it happened. You did it yourself.”
He flinched at the image of his beautiful sister murdering a thousand youkai, bathing in their blood. He simply sighed, and held her closer.
“Oy! Hakkai! You gonna introduce us or what?” he heard Gojyo yell.
He looked down and smiled at his sister.
“Would you like to meet my friends?”
“Of course…Hakkai.”
He was almost moved to tears himself as he saw the quiet understanding in Denai's eyes. She wasn't going to question why he had changed his name; she just accepted it…accepted him.
As the walked over to his table, Hakkai felt a slight stiffening in Denai. He saw a look of surprise on her face, followed by a flash of pain that was quickly masked. Which one of his friends had caused that reaction, and why?
Denai sat down and glanced at her brother's traveling companions…except him. It surprised her when the blonde said nothing, and she let out a sigh of relief. She wasn't ready to face anything that he might say yet. When she looked at who was sitting next to her, she was surprised again. It was the monkey king, Son Goku. She smiled at him.
“See? I told you that you wouldn't be alone for much longer.”
His eyes widened for a minute, then relaxed as recognition kicked in. She had given him hope while he was in his prison. She had given him a glimpse of the sun.
Sanzo's eyes narrowed. How did this woman know Goku? And why did she seem so familiar?
“Denai this is Sha Gojyo, Genjo Sanzo, and I guess you already know Son Goku. Everyone, this is my older sister Denai.”
Sanzo could tell that he wasn't the only one surprised by Hakkai's announcement. For one thing, hadn't Hakkai's older sister died? And wasn't this woman a youkai? The limiters that she wore marked her as not being human. What the hell was going on?
She saw their confused looks, and felt that she should explain.
“I'm eleven years older than Hakkai. K…Kanan was seven years younger than me.”
“That doesn't explain that,” Gojyo stated, pointing at her coronet.
“How perceptive.” She replied, sarcastically.
“This happened a little less than eleven years ago.”
No one needed to ask her how she had lost her humanity, and her closed look warned any from asking why she had done it. She looked to Sanzo, waiting for him to mention…anything form their past, but he didn't. Everyone heard her sharp intake of breath as she turned away from him. He didn't remember her. That hurt almost as much as her memories. She stood and bowed to them all,
“I must go.” She said, as with an almost absent caress of Goku's hair, she turned and began to walk away.
Confused, Hakkai called after her, and went over to her.
“What's wrong Denai?”
She sighed,
“Nothing. I just have to go.”
“Y…you could stay with us tonight.”
She looked into his eyes, surprised.
“You want me to stay?”
“Why wouldn't I?”
“I don't know.”
“Well, the only problem is that there were only three rooms left when we got here.”
“Who is sharing with whom?”
“I usually share with Goku.”
“Umm…I don't really want to share a room with the pervy water sprite.”
Hakkai laughed, causing the other three to stare. They hadn't seen him in this genuine of a good mood for a long time, if ever.
Goku was determined to keep Denai with them, if only for a little while longer.
“She can share a room with me.” He announced across the room
As he noticed the looks all the men in the room were giving him, he blushed and ducked his head. Before he felt the familiar whack of Sanzo's fan, there was the gentle pressure of a hand on his shoulder.
“That's a brilliant idea Goku,” Denai told him with a smile.
“Hey honey, you can share my room anytime,” someone yelled across the room, followed by laughter that was quickly silenced with one look from Hakkai.
A more concerned inn keeper came over to them.
“Excuse me. Wouldn't it be better for her to share a room with the priest?”
“No.”
Denai's quick refusal surprised everyone, especially Sanzo.
“Why the hell not?” He demanded
When she looked at him she had the saddest eyes he'd ever seen, but her answer was just insulting.
“Personal prejudice.”
She walked away before he could respond, and he just watched as Goku followed her up the stairs.
“What was that about Hakkai?”
“I don't know. When we were younger her best friend was a priest. So, I don't know why she doesn't seem to like you.”
At Gojyo's snicker, Sanzo pointed his Smith & Wesson and fired a round in the direction of the kappa's head. He stood up.
“I'm gonna go find out what her problem is.”
He stalked up the stairs, and down the hall to Goku's room. Before he opened the door, he heard his name and decided to listen.
*gasp* what did Sanzo hear? Hmmm…there's something going on between him and Denai…I wonder what…ok, please comment
