A long chapter. Names fly about here. If you can't remember who's who, please check the first two
chapters for confirmation.

Gojyo smoothed his shirt unconsciously as he knocked on the door to the house that Sanzo owned. Gojyo was
a little jealous, he could only afford an apartment and here his partner was with a nice house in the
middle of downtown.

To his surprise, Hakkai opened the door.

"Hak-Val." Gojyo greeted.

Hakkai smiled at him. "You call me Hakkai and I'll call you Gojyo?" he offered.

Gojyo grinned back. "Yeah, sure," he agreed.

"Sanzo's names have a tendency to stick somehow." Hakkai said with a twinkle in his eye. "Please come
in."

"Thanks." Gojyo replied as he stepped into the house.

Hakkai closed the door behind him and then gestured to the sandals neatly arranged on the slightly raised
floor.

"Shoes off and sandals on, please," he requested.

Gojyo raised an eyebrow. "You've been here often."

Hakkai gave a small laugh. "Yes, I suppose I have. Sanzo and I are old friends. Oh, I need to talk to you
and Sanzo before you leave tonight, so if you wouldn't mind leaving a little later..."

"No problem." Gojyo assured.

"Thank you."

Gojyo slipped on a pair of sandals, surprised by the fact that they fit. He'd have to re-examine Sanzo's
shoe size.

He followed Hakkai through the house, which was only subtly decorated, to the living room. The entire
place seemed to have a very Oriental air about it, yet it was also infused with something that Gojyo
couldn't put a finger on.

He found Goku carting drinks into the living room. Goku saw him and scowled slightly.

"Hey monkey." Gojyo greeted cheerily.

"I'm not a monkey." Goku grumped as he set the drinks on a low table. "I'll go tell them you're here.
What do you want to drink?"

"Beer." Gojyo ordered.

Goku headed back out of the room.

"Where are the chairs?" Gojyo asked.

"You're supposed to sit on the floor." Hakkai informed.

"Ah."

Goku returned and handed Gojyo a glass of beer.

"They'll be right out. Maman is lecturing Sanzo about the proper way to cook the fish." Goku informed.

Gojyo grinned at the idea of someone lecturing Sanzo and getting away with it. He sipped his drink and
was surprised to find that it was quite good. He was about to ask Hakkai a question when an older man
came into the room.

He was only a little taller than Goku and very Asian in appearance. His short black hair was neatly
combed and shot with white. He wore large, wire-rimmed glasses that took up a lot of his face. He was
dressed in black slacks and a pale grey shirt, both rather neatly pressed.

"Hello," he said with a faint accent, bowing slightly at Gojyo. "You must be Lieutenant Shawn."

Gojyo managed a semblance of a bow in return. "Yes, sir. Please call me Cat."

"A pleasure, Cat. I'm Eiji Genjo."

Gojyo shook the proffered hand. "The pleasure's all mine, Mr. Genjo."

He was confused by how Sanzo could have blond hair when his father's hair was black. But he now realized
that the very faint accent Sanzo had was somewhat similar to Eiji's. He hadn't noticed Sanzo's accent
before, but after hearing Eiji speak, he realized that Sanzo indeed had a very faint accent. Goku
completely lacked that accent, though, and sounded more like Gojyo and Hakkai.

Sanzo abruptly came into the room. "Dinner will be ready in two minutes," he said in an almost ominous
tone before returning the way he came.

Hakkai smiled at this. "That means he's finished being lectured," he explained to Gojyo. Gojyo grinned.

"I'll take the drinks into the dining room." Goku said with a sigh.

"Thank you, Aatan." Eiji said. "Please, Cat, this way."

Gojyo obediently followed Eiji into the next room, which held a dining table that seated ten and was made
of some kind of red wood. Goku reappeared with a few plates of food that he placed in the middle of the
table. Sanzo followed him with more food.

"Can you use chopsticks?" he asked Gojyo.

Gojyo blinked. "No."

"I'll get you a fork and knife then." Sanzo said, leaving again.

A woman then entered the room with plates of food. She gave him a sunny smile.

"Hello, Lieutenant Shawn," she said, setting down the food and extending a hand. "I'm Merehau Genjo,
mother of these tiny boys."

"Nice to meet you, Mrs. Genjo." Gojyo replied, shaking the hand and grinning. "Please call me Cat."

"Have a seat, Cat, no need to stand on formality here." Merehau said, waving for him to sit. "And you can
call me Merehau if you'd like."

"Thank you, Merehau." Gojyo acquiesced with a smile, sitting down.

Merehau was a tall, slender woman. Taller than Gojyo, in fact. She was slender but large boned. Her face
was beautiful, even at her age, and her long curly black hair was only sprinkled with white. She wore
flowing pants and a long shirt, both of a muted red with some kind of design worked in black on the hems.
She appeared to be of African origin but her accent sounded French.

Gojyo cursed his lack of knowledge in other countries. Otherwise he'd probably at least be able to guess
where Merehau and Eiji were from.

It was obvious to him, though, that Sanzo and Goku were adopted. It explained their lack of resembled to
each other and to their parents.

Sanzo chose that moment to return to the room and set the last bit of food down as well as a fork and
knife for Gojyo. He sat down next to Gojyo, across from Eiji. Hakkai sat on the other side of Gojyo,
across from Goku, leaving Merehau to sit across from Gojyo.

"I hope there's nothing here you can't eat." Merehau said. "Please begin."

Gojyo nodded, but waited for Goku to begin taking some food before he did so himself. He recognized the
sushi and realized that they were most likely eating Japanese food. That probably meant that Eiji was
Japanese. Priding himself on his ability to draw logical conclusions, he set about trying to figure out
where Merehau came from.

"May I ask if Cat is short for anything?" Merehau questioned.

Gojyo shook his head. "No, I'm afraid it's not," he replied. "It's a Scottish name, from my mother's
side."

Merehau smiled. "That's an interesting name," she said. "I think it suits you quite nicely."

"Thank you." Gojyo said with an answering smile. "I'm rather fond of it as well. Could I ask where your
name comes from? I've never heard one like it before."

Merehau laughed lightly. "It's quite common enough in my country. I'm from Tahiti. Eiji moved there from
Japan when he finished university. We met at work and eventually married. If you're wondering why Rahiti
and Aatan don't sound like I do, it's because they've been schooled all over the place. Originally they
started out in Tahiti. Rahiti completed high school in Japan and university here. Aatan finished high
school in Tahiti and he's currently going to university here. A nice rounded education keeps them
sounding far different from me. They sound more like their father."

"Which I consider a pity as I adore her accent." Eiji spoke up.

The two of them exchanged a loving look that made Gojyo want to say 'aww' and smile. Goku then began to
take over the conversation by telling his parents about what he was currently studying in school. This
conversation managed to take up the rest of dinner.

They retired to the living room, with Hakkai and Sanzo putting away the dishes. Merehau and Eiji
conversed with Gojyo, learning more about him and telling him more about themselves. When Hakkai and
Sanzo joined them, Gojyo was intrigued at how Goku went over to Sanzo and all but cuddled up next to him.

It was like watching a dog sit companionably next to his master. Gojyo half expected Sanzo to reach out
and scratch behind Goku's ears.

"Otousan, how are the birds?" Hakkai asked.

"Quite well, actually. They miss Aatan, of course." Eiji replied.

"I miss them too." Goku said wistfully. "I can't wait to go back and visit soon."

"Not until you're finished for the year." Eiji said sternly.

"Yes, otousan." Goku agreed.

"Besides, if you're with us you can't visit your brother." Merehau added.

It was amazing how Goku seemed torn between the two ideas and yet Sanzo remained indifferent to how Goku
felt. It was definitely a strange sibling relationship the two had.

"Or perhaps you'll come visit as well, Rahiti." Merehau said.

"I don't have enough vacation time, maman." Sanzo replied.

"Can't you do something about that, Valentine?" Merehau asked. "We'd love to have you there too."

"I'll see what I can do, maman." Hakkai replied. "But we are quite busy and Rahiti's rather
indispensable."

"At least he's got a good job." Merehau agreed, eyeing Goku pointedly.

"Aww, maman, I don't have that much time for work." Goku protested. "I've got all that homework and
studying to do."

"Then I suggest you cut back on how much you eat." Eiji said solemnly.

"Otousan!" Goku gasped, looking stricken.

Gojyo smiled at the comfortable feel this family had; even Sanzo wasn't being too grouchy. He wondered
why Sanzo put on a cold face most of the time.

"He eats enough for five people." Merehau explained to Gojyo.

"But he never gets any taller." Eiji said, sounding forlorn. "Nineteen and he's still so short."

"Maman! Otousan!" Goku complained. "Sanzo, don't let them pick on me."

Sanzo snorted. "Why shouldn't I?"

Goku pouted. "Hakkai, save me?" he pleaded.

"I'm sorry, Aatan, but I'm not brave enough to face maman and otousan together." Hakkai replied.

Goku turned to Gojyo, who smirked. Goku stuck out his tongue and hid behind Sanzo's slender form. Not
that it provided much protection; Sanzo was skinny despite his muscles.

Gojyo decided that he wouldn't be juvenile enough to stick his tongue out at Goku and settled for
listening to the conversation. Gojyo enjoyed Sanzo's parents immensely. Both were witty, though Eiji was
more formal than Merehau was. Sanzo seemed to be more like Eiji and Goku was more like Merehau, but both
had their own distinct personalities.

Goku finally had to leave. He hugged his parents and Hakkai and even Sanzo goodbye before leaving. It
was getting close to eleven o'clock but Hakkai was showing no signs of referring to whatever it was they
needed to talk about. Gojyo was wondering what was going on. He wasn't worried, as they had the day off
tomorrow, but still, he was beginning to feel like he was overstaying his welcome.

Sanzo's parents solved his problem for him.

"Mon Dieu it's late." Merehau realized. "I think we should retire for the night. What do you think, mon
cher?"

Eiji nodded. "It's indeed past time for us to sleep. It was a pleasure talking to you Cat. I hope we'll
see you again soon."

"Same here, Mr. Genjo." Gojyo replied, shaking his hand again. "And you as well, Merehau."

"Have a good night, Cat," she replied, shaking his hand.

"Sleep well maman, otousan." Hakkai said, giving them hugs.

Sanzo led his parents out of the room.

Hakkai smiled at Gojyo. "More beer?"

Gojyo eyed Hakkai's smiling visage. "Something tells me I'll need it."

Hakkai's smile never wavered as he headed off to get the beer. Sanzo returned and noticed Hakkai's
absence.

"This way," he said, walking out of the room.

Gojyo followed quickly, not about to get lost in this place. Sanzo led him to another living room. This
one was more Western in style and had a couch, a loveseat, and three armchairs in a rough semicircle.
There were a lot of small end tables instead of a coffee table in the middle. There were also stools, for
some odd reason.

"You have two living rooms?" Gojyo said, gawking.

Sanzo made a noise before settling into the loveseat. "Hakkai prefers it."

Gojyo arched and eyebrow but refrained from commenting as Hakkai came into the room with a case of beer
and some snacks.

"Help yourself," he said, setting the snacks on the end table near the loveseat and sitting next to
Sanzo while handing him a beer.

The reason for the stools became apparent as Sanzo put his feet up on the one in front of him.

Gojyo grabbed a beer and lounged on the couch. "So, what's up Captain, my Captain?"

"A case." Hakkai replied.

Gojyo groaned. "How'd I know you were going to say that."

"Don't worry, it's not a rushed case. I just wanted to know if you want to accept it." Hakkai said
soothingly.

He pulled two file folders from behind him and handed one to Gojyo and the other to Sanzo. Sanzo glanced
at it and at Hakkai before taking a swig of his beer. Gojyo read through the file and then glanced at an
expressionless Hakkai.

"How long do I have to think this over?" he asked.

"I'll need to know the day you come back to work." Hakkai replied. "I thought I'd let you know now so
that you'd have time to decide. I need Sanzo on this one, he's got the right contacts for it, but your
involvement is strictly up to you."

"You'll accept anything, won't you?" Gojyo said in a mildly annoyed tone.

"That's why I like him." Hakkai said with a smile.

Sanzo snorted and drank his beer.

"It can't be for his conversation skills." Gojyo added, enjoying Sanzo's glare.

"Just think about it." Hakkai advised. "Talk it over with your partner if you want. I'm going to get
some sleep."

"Your room's ready." Sanzo said.

Hakkai beamed at him. "You can be so nice, Sanzo."

Sanzo glared but Hakkai was unaffected as always.

"Have a good night, Gojyo." Hakkai said. "And if you don't feel like driving home, feel free to stay the
night."

Sanzo sat up and glared harder. "Hakkai," he growled.

"Thanks." Gojyo said, grinning at Hakkai. "Sleep well."

Hakkai's expression seemed to falter slightly at that, but it was so slight that Gojyo couldn't tell if
he imagined it or not. Hakkai smiled and headed out of the room.

Gojyo frowned slightly before moving to lounge next to Sanzo. Sanzo glared at him as if he was invading
too much of his personal space.

"You know, you'd probably attract a girlfriend more easily if you let up on the death glare." Gojyo said
conspiratorially.

Sanzo's glare intensified before he snorted and drank his beer instead.

"There you go." Gojyo said, putting a hand on Sanzo's shoulder.

Sanzo immediately brushed the hand off. "Don't touch me."

Gojyo smirked. "We really need to work on your people skills."

Sanzo refused to answer.

"So, are you really going to work this case?" Gojyo asked, changing the topic.

"Yes." Sanzo replied.

"Isn't it a bit risky?" Gojyo pointed out.

Sanzo shrugged and had some more beer.

"What? You like action in your life?" Gojyo hazarded. "That's what girlfriends are for, oh lieutenant."

"I don't consider listening to some woman nag about how late I get home action." Sanzo replied.

Gojyo blinked. "Wow, that was a long sentence."

"Shut up."

"Fine fine. You going to tell me what's with Hakkai?"

Sanzo glanced at Gojyo and looked away.

"Come on." Gojyo wheedled. "He calls your parents whatever it is you call them and he's far too familiar
with this place. So tell me, were you two an item?"

Sanzo's eyes widened and he glared at Gojyo, who kept talking; unaware of the danger he was in.

"I mean, it's okay if you were, I've got nothing against dating the boss, but I want to know the details
man."

Sanzo grabbed Gojyo's shirt collar and yanked. Gojyo fairly flew across the space between them to find
himself staring into Sanzo's murderous gaze. The lower half of his body still rested on the loveseat but
the upper half was suspended in the air by Sanzo's left arm. If Sanzo let go, he would fall onto Sanzo's
lap. But Sanzo's arm didn't even tremble.

"Don't ever say that again." Sanzo hissed in a very dangerous tone. "Especially not in this house."

Gojyo refused to let his fear show. "Why?" he rasped.

Sanzo's glare seemed to intensify but then it died abruptly. "He was married to Tehani," he said quietly.

"Who's Tehani?" Gojyo asked softly.

"My sister." Sanzo whispered.

"What happened?" Gojyo asked very softly.

Sanzo's eyes hardened. "She was killed."

Gojyo was shoved back to his seat so suddenly that he collapsed in a limp mass. He struggled to regain
his seating.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly, putting a hand on Sanzo's shoulder.

Sanzo brushed him off again. "Just never say anything about Hakkai again," he growled low in his throat.

Gojyo took a swig of his beer in response. Dammit, now he felt guilty about Hakkai.

The two drank silently for a while, going through a few more bottles of beer each. Both men were in their
own thoughts and not talking to each other. Gojyo was definitely getting drunk by this point, but he
didn't care.

"I'll do it," he said suddenly.

Sanzo glanced over at him. "Do what?"

"Work on the case."

Sanzo frowned at Gojyo's abrupt acceptance. "Why?"

Gojyo frowned back at Sanzo and then seemed to be frozen in his gaze.

Sanzo scowled. "Why?" he repeated.

Gojyo blinked. "Huh? Oh, I don't know," he replied, slurring ever so slightly. "Because you look so hot
when you're drunk, I guess."

Sanzo's eyes narrowed dangerously, especially since Gojyo was giving him a lazy grin.

"Anyway, I'll do it." Gojyo continued blithely.

Sanzo snorted and then got up.

"Where you going?" Gojyo asked.

"To sleep." Sanzo said in a rather irritated tone.

"Good idea. I think I'll join you." Gojyo said, getting up rather comically. "Where's the bed?"

Sanzo snarled at Gojyo. "This way."

Gojyo stumbled along behind Sanzo, somehow managing not to bump into anything. He tripped forward and
fell on Sanzo. They didn't fall into a heap, but Sanzo did push Gojyo back upright as fast as he could.

"Don't touch me," he growled.

Gojyo stumbled back slightly. "Fine, fine," he mumbled, not caring enough to argue.

Sanzo let Gojyo upstairs to a bedroom.

"The bathroom's on your right. Don't wake anyone." Sanzo ordered as he started leaving.

"Aren't you going to join me, honey?" Gojyo asked teasingly.

Sanzo turned around and punched Gojyo in the jaw. Gojyo fell on the bed, unconscious. Sanzo made a
satisfied noise and left the room.

The end of chapter 4

Translation note: "Maman" means "mother" in French. "Otousan" means "father" in Japanese. "Mon Dieu" and
"mon cher" mean "my God" and "my dear" (roughly) in French. I'm not very knowledgeable in either
language so excuse any mistakes I may have made.
My my, that was a long chapter. It turned out to be longer than I planned. The next chapter will be in a
while due to this one. Gojyo says the oddest things when he's drunk, doesn't he?
Again, if you don't like the story, just don't read it. No one's forcing you.
