Note: This is sort of a side story/interlude for another story that I've titled De Trop. Which kind of explains why Ginji decides to finally talk to Shido at the end.
Note 2: I finished this at 1:26 A.M. I don't have time to proofread right now. See anything glaringly obvious, tell me.
Summary: Loneliness in Infinity Fortress was an encouraged state-of-being.
Ginji was in possession of a trinket that he never spoke about. It resided in a dark green, cardboard box with white letters across the top of it. Ban had no idea what was inside of it but he'd long ago learned his lesson about trying to find out. He wasn't sure he'd ever seen Ginji freak out like that before…Point to case, Gin snatched it and squirreled it away somewhere, never to resurface again.
Infinity Fortress was nothing like High School. There was no Prom King and Queen and there were no popularity contests. There were no couples and there was no love.
In the upper ranks of the Volts there was no question as to the nature of Juubei and Kazuki's relationship, but it wasn't talked about. Love made you weak and in Infinity Fortress, the weak died while the lonely survived...
Ginji Amano was the loneliest of all, a solitary figure sitting above the rest. The indestructible, unapproachable Lightning Lord. The dark eyes and bleached hair...the aura of invincibility, more intimidating than anything in the world.
Yet even he was weak.
He sought out Shido Fuyuki, one of his four emperors. One of his elite: the Beast Master. A lone wolf by choice, rather than set apart by status, but lonely all the same. He hid it well, congregating with his creatures, but Ginji wasn't fooled. He was lord here and he knew all.
Ginji went to Shido in the dark hours of the night. Moving through the corridors of his castle until he came upon the Beast's domicile. They were friend. Shido would greet his Master with a smile, perhaps hoping for a pat on the head like a dog?
“Shido,” the Lightning Lord said in a hoarse whisper. The tone of his voice was strange and it made the Mariudo stiffen.
“What?”
“Are you ever lonely out here?”
“No, I have my animals.”
“I get lonely.”
The statement threw Shido off completely. The Lightning Lord, who they all looked up to, wouldn't have a weakness such as loneliness.
“Now, Shido,” Ginji continued, stepping over a cat and reaching out to tug on one of the ends of the older man's bandanna. “I want you...to push me up against this wall and fuck me so hard I forget about all that. You can do that for me, right?”
Shido swallowed harshly and then nodded. He knew what to do...and wanted to. He crushed the Lightning Lord to the wall; it felt good, like a victory even though he knew that if Ginji felt unhappy with any of this he could kill the Beast Master. But for now, the victory, however it was won, was good. Instinct overtook him in mere moments, his hips bucking loving the friction, humping Ginji and keeping him pressed close to the wall.
Shido must have let go more than he thought because he literally ripped through Ginji's clothes and his own. It was lust and haste and he had to have it. He had to *conquer*. He could regret all of it later. Now he needed, he wanted, he had to be inside of Ginji. He had to do as his Master commanded. He had to make him hurt, to numb the pain, to fill the void...He barked, yipped, growled, bit Ginji's shoulder as he moved. His body tingled...Ginji let out small gasps; each punctuated with a flux of electrical current...Shido howled when their orgasms struck. He stood there breathing, trying not to crush the boy under his weight.
Ginji twisted in his arms, turning to face him. His eyes were murky, several lank strands of hair stuck to his forehead, sweat beaded there.
“I lied,” Shido panted as his gaze locked with the Lightning Lord's. “I get lonely.”
They skirted endlessly around the idea of being lovers because neither had the time to devote to such an act. They could not publicly display the affection that wasn't there. What sparked the relationship was unclear, even to them. Both were young and attractive in their way, but it wasn't physical lust. Ginji wasn't the smartest creature he knew what he knew and that was about it. So they did not keep each other's company for any scintillating conversations. Not that Shido spoke much to begin with.
Ginji sat high up on a mound of garbage, watching the sky burn with the sunset. His face was cold and regal…his eyes dark and sharp. The Lightning Lord of the Shinjuku Underground. So, detached from the rest of the world…his aura compelling yet repelling. Shido looked up at him from below, his attention solely on him: Ginji Amano. Kazuki and MakubeX (or the *other*) didn't notice him as he climbed up the garbage heap. Their own eyes were focused elsewhere. Shido climbed and sat down beside Ginji. He leaned in close to the boy,
“Are you lonely, right now?” he whispered into his ear.
“Always, Shido.”
“Is that--why?”
“Yes. Is that a *problem*?”
“Never, Lightning Lord.”
Again. Another torrid moment in a deserted corridor. Shoved against a wall, legs splayed. Growling, yipping, barking, gasping. His conquest and the lights flickered. Their senses heightened, blood roaring. Shido gripped the boy's hips tightly. So much muscle yet Ginji was skin and bones. So thin…a crunch reached his ears. His eyes, which he hadn't realized he'd closed, snapped open. Ginji had his face turned to the side, his eyes were needlelike, his face blank. Shido turned as well…his mouth twisted ironically at the sight…Emishi's face was priceless.
That Joker. Always looking for Shido's *approval* but it wasn't Shido he needed to prove himself to. It was Ginji who ruled, not his Barons. Together they both looked at the master of the Rouran dispassionately, waiting patiently for him to leave so they could continue. They waited out the storm of emotions that flew across his face…disbelief, rage, disappointment, disgust, envy, and lust. Shido felt more than heard the Lightning Lord's chuckle course through his body. They would have a talk with Emishi about keeping his features schooled. Later.
They watched Emishi lick his lips and then turn away deliberately. The guttural, bestial noises Shido makes nipped at his heels as he left.
The higher sects of the Volts did not condone the celebration of holidays. There was no Christmas, Easter, New Year, Birthdays, Lovers' Days, White Day or any holiday one could think to contrive. The inside of Infinity Fortress didn't have a proper calendar anyway. Those days could pass by without anyone within the Underground Shinjuku being aware.
It was too *dangerous* for anyone to let down their guard. Emotions were the sign of the weak. Kazuki occasionally dared to argue with Ginji about this line of thought, but the Lightning Lord did not have to listen to any complaint he didn't want to.
One day it snowed. It was a great white flurry, *blizzard*. Snowflakes came bursting in broken windows and poorly thatched roofs. Garbage can fires were started up all throughout the hallways. The smoke filed off through the same exits that the snow used to gain entrance. The Lightning Lord and his Emperors strolled the halls, looking for ways to help. They dug through garbage in search of coats, they helped find dry tinder for the fires, and they patched up windows as best they could. The week was busy and more than one run was made into the town itself for supplies that they simply couldn't find inside the Lawless District. Nails that weren't rusty for example.
Not that the work was thankless, but it was difficult. Especially with Emishi constantly at Shido's heels, the Joker was still unable to erase the image of Shido and Ginji together. He looked up to them both but he adored the Beast Master…he was slavishly devoted to him and he envied the Lightning Lord for taking away his chance, his chance for recognition, his chance to firmly take his place in Shido's life. He followed Shido through town, jabbering as he usually did, but deep inside he was sulking. He needed to be consoled, but the Mariudo was acting as if nothing had happened.
In Shido's mind nothing *had* happened. He just enjoyed the feeling of Ginji's warm body beneath his. He liked the kill without the hunt. He liked the way his hands slipped on the Lightning Lord's sweaty skin. He loved the tingling jolt that went through his body…and he couldn't speak for Ginji.
He was ignorant to Emishi's yammering as they walked. They finally stopped before a general store, a homeless man sat out front, huddled up in mismatched coats and fiddling furiously with something that was half hidden by the large sleeves. The two Volts ignored him as they headed inside, Ginji had insisted they pay for the goods, so they might give the old man their change when they came out.
“I'll have a nice present for you two boys when you're on your way out!” the hobo called to them as they passed. Shido only paused for a moment to eye the man oddly.
Shido paced the halls in the dark, keen eyes taking in each piece of trash intent on tripping him up in the gloom. He scrounged through piles of garbage until he found something close to what he wanted. Then it was time. He found Ginji lying listlessly on his mattress. He wasn't asleep; Shido could see the glint of his eyes.
“Shido?” the Lightning Lord asked in a small, tired voice.
Shido felt no need to reply, he came over and dropped down next to the boy. Ginji sat up curiously, one hand groping blindly in the dark for his friend. The Fuyuki man caught it roughly in his own, then pressed something into it. Hard, rectangular, about the size of a thin paperback book. Ginji pulled it closer to his face, trying to look at it in the dark. The contents shifted inside the box.
“Shido?” the boy repeated quietly.
“Go on,” the Beast Master urged, even though he didn't want to speak. He didn't want to explain. He just wanted Ginji to open that box. Gin finally did, but still had trouble seeing it. His eyes caught a slight sparkle, but he made a current run between his thumb and forefinger as temporary lighting. He examined the necklace with interest. Since the old man had given it to him (mutter about keeping it as a reminder to help the homeless) several days ago, Shido had looked at the simple thing at least a hundred times. And every time he did, it reminded him more and more of Ginji.
The clear glass beads were speckled with gold like lightning shooting through a clear sky and between them hung a polished silver stone, wrapped with gold wire…Shido wondered if the stone would conduct electricity. Ginji apparently had the same thought; he brought the rock to where currents still ran between his fingers. They passed easily through the charm. The elastic rope that made up the necklace was not so lucky; it smoked slightly and smelled awful. Ginji stopped electrocuting it and just listened to the elastic hiss from the heat.
The Lightning Lord looked up at his Baron, a thin frown on his lips. *Why* it didn't need to be asked, but Shido had no idea how to begin answering. *Why*? Well because he'd thought of Ginji, because they were sort of lovers, because he was allowed to take something from the Lightning Lord, ruler of the Underground Shinjuku, because Ginji kept the loneliness at bay.
Something must have shown on his face because Ginji just nodded. He jerked his wrist, making the beads jump into the palm of his hand, holding the bauble. It was thank you. It was I understand. It was everything and Shido couldn't believe it when he leaned in and kissed him.
Shido sometimes stared at Ginji, Ban noticed. It was a strange, faraway, wistful look that sometimes swept over his face for short periods of time. Ban wondered at it and found he couldn't even begin to speculate. All he knew was that sometimes Ginji saw it and the exact same look ghosted across his face as well.
But, as Ginji had said, there were things about their pasts that they hadn't told each other.
Didn't stop Ban from being curious.
Madoka threw a week long to observe a year of new friendships and the successful boom of business that the Retrievers, Transporters, and Protectors were enjoying. She invited everyone who had helped her retrieve her violin, as well as everyone on the I.L. team, and anyone else she or Shido could think of. This was much to Ginji's dismay, because Akabane did choose to show up.
Everyone was invited to stay at her mansion, but only Ginji and Ban (still without any steady place to live) chose to accept. And whether it was because of Akabane or something else, Ginji chose to retire early. By 7:00 his eyes would barely stay open and he yawned hugely. Ban cast him a worried look, but didn't say anything. So, Shido rose when Ginji mentioned going to sleep.
“C'mon.” He offered show the boy to the rooms Madoka had arranged. Ginji shuffled slowly after him when he set off. His long strides carried him faster and he had to stop often to make sure Ginji didn't get lost in the maze of halls. When he stopped in front of the door Ginji bumped into him. “This is it,” Shido announced while the former Lightning Lord righted himself. “The bags you guys brought are already in there.”
“Shido?” the teenager asked softly. So softly the Beast Master almost didn't hear.
“What?”
“Wait here, okay?” Ginji didn't wait for an answer and slipped into the room. Shido could barely catch the sounds of things being shuffled around. The blonde returned to the dim hallway after several moments, hands behind his back suspiciously. He stared down at his feet and Shido felt his curiosity pique.
“What?” he repeated gently. Ginji drew his hands from behind his back, holding out a dark green box. It looked a little beat up, but Shido certainly didn't care, he heard the rustling inside and knew exactly what it was.
“I never…told you what it meant to me,” Ginji confessed.
“I can't believe you still have it,” his friend, his former *lover* chuckled. “It was just some *thing* this hobo gave me…Emishi got one too.” Shido pulled up the top and looked at the rock. Apparently the elastic band had long since melted away, the beads too, but the rock was still there, dull and a little singed from too much electric charge and plasma, but there.
“I kept it…”
“Because?” Shido prompted, looking up sharply and sounding a bit too hopeful. Considering he has a girlfriend now, and he loves Madoka very much.
“Shido,” Ginji chided in a whisper, “I didn't…I don't love you any more than you love me.”
The Mariudo couldn't help but grin. “I know,” he murmured. He put the lid back on the box and handed it back.
“I kept it because…when I'm alone…it helps…and…” Ginji was cut off, startled when Shido titled his chin up and kissed him. Then pressed him to the wall and the world narrowed. Just the two of them in this one muted hallway, saying *goodbye* to the past.
Shido reveled in the difference. This wasn't the Lightning Lord who wanted to forget his loneliness through him. This was Ginji…and with a *friend* like him…you could never be alone. Not as long as he was around. When they pulled apart and it looked as if Gin was about to cry.
“What?” the Beast Master asked in surprise.
“Thank you,” Ginji mumbled, then jerked out of Shido's arms and went into the room to hide his trinket away again. He couldn't explain it to Ban. He couldn't even begin to put words to what he felt, now or then.
Shido looked at the door and contemplated going in after his friend, but decided against it. Ginji would be back to his sunny little self by morning, he hoped. He turned and headed down the hall; bumping shoulders with Ban he turned the corner. They glared at each other like they always did, but Ban's seemed half-hearted.
His face distant.
