Chapter one: Broken Innocence

*~*~*~*

Athrun didn't know how he had gotten out here. He had no idea what he thought he was doing, and apparently neither did the Minerva as they were continually comm-ing him. He ignored it though and kept looking, Kira couldn't be dead. He had to look and he had to find him. A beep from one of his sensors had him turning and he saw the Strike Rouge, or at least what was left of it. The Rouge was floundering in the water and obviously holding something, but her thrusters were damaged and her armor was badly scarred and damaged. There was almost no doubt in his mind that the cockpit had been compromised. How Cagalli was keeping the thrusters going was beyond him, but he had to help her. Grabbing the Rouge's broken right arm he pulled, using full power to hoist the machine out of the water. In the Rouge's grasp were the last remnants of the Freedom. The cockpit was damaged but… Kira might be alive.

“Ready the landing gear! Crash crew and Medics on standby!” Captain Gladys commanded. “If those pilots are alive they're going to need all the help they can get!”

“Ma'am?” her First Officer stared at her.

“If we leave them out there now… we're no better then the Earth Forces. We'd be nothing but murders, and I'm sorry but I'm not willing to have that on my conscience!” Gladys snapped angrily. “Don't forget, Cagalli pulled a lot of strings for us to see that we could get out of Orb, I won't have her death at my hands. I won't forget.”

“Right!” First officer Trine stiffened. “Crash and Medic crews on Standby.”

“Let's see what our Faith Ace has brought us.” Gladys sighed, “Nothing with that group is ever easy.”

Athrun watched in horror as they opened the freedom and pulled a broken Kira from the wreckage. When they called him alive and rushed him off he couldn't help but feel relieved. They were still struggling with the Rouge, and water was leaking everywhere from the cockpit. The PS armor was down so they opted to just cut her open and get the pilot out. He was in shock when they pulled her bloodied form from the Rouge, her suit had been compromised and she had been in below zero degree water.

“Cagalli!” Athrun fought against the officers holding him before falling to his knees as she was raced from the hangar. “Oh god Cagalli...”

“Oh my god… That really was… the real princess…? What was she… What did she think she was doing!?” Lunamaria whispered crying. “How… why… She did that for him?”

“Of course she did…” Athrun whispered hoarsely. “She wouldn't have done anything else. Cagalli is… she's more protective of those she loves then Kira ever was. She never cares about herself… It's not her, its always Orb or Kira or Lacus or Kisaka or Me or… it's never her.”

“She loves him?” Lunamaria frowned. “But I thought she…”

“Of course, he's her twin brother so why wouldn't she?” Athrun chuckled bitterly. “Excuse me.”

“Twins?” Lunamaria blinked and stared after him. “I thought Princess Cagalli was an only child.”

“Brother? She sacrificed… for her brother?” Shinn frowned staring after where the stretcher had vanished. “But why?”

“Because she loved him.” Meyrin stated softly. “I know… even though I'm not a redcoat or a good pilot… if that had been Luna… what else could I do? I'd loose… it would be like loosing half of me…”

Athrun ignored them and kept walking. He needed to know, would they make it? His words from their last meeting kept rolling through his head. Could he forgive himself for leaving those angry words between them? He didn't think he could. So he sat and waited never leaving his spot.

“Commander Zala? The Coordinator Pilot Kira Yamato is awake, you can see him now… He's very distressed.” The head doctor told him quietly.

“Cagalli? How is she doing?” Athrun asked quietly.

“She's hypothermic… we're doing the best we can. When you're done with the Pilot, there is something you need to know. I've already made the Captain aware of it.” The doctor looked sick and incredibly tired. “This is terrible news for Orb.”

“You're from Orb?”

“Yes, when we were ordered to evacuate I left for the Plants, unfortunately I was recruited by ZAFT and assigned to the Minerva.” The doctor gestured toward the door. “A lot of us wanted nothing to do with ZAFT just so you know. Let lady Cagalli know that we had no intention of betraying her or our Orb.”

Athrun frowned and nodded before entering the room.

“Athrun? Where's Cagalli? What's wrong with her?” Kira gasped struggling weakly against his restraints. “She was there… I know it. Athrun where is she?”

“Cagalli is in critical condition right now. The blast compromised the cockpit and her suit… she was exposed to sub-zero temperatures…” Athrun gritted his teeth. “She's… Hypothermia had set in by the time we were able to get to her…”

“What?” Kira stared at him. “That idiot! We can't loose her!”

“What did you think she would do? You know her as well as I do! Of course she wouldn't just sit by while her brother was getting his ass kicked by some dumb-ass rookie ace! Damnit Kira what were you thinking!” Athrun shouted.

“I was thinking that I'm sick of fighting! I'm SICK OF KILLING! We aren't murders!” Kira snapped. “We were meant to be protectors… but what the hell are we protecting now?”

“…” Athrun shuddered. “I'll let the doctors know about you and Cagalli, they'll move you into the same room as her when she stabilizes.”

“If she dies… everything will be lost.” Kira whispered quietly. “She's the Earth's only hope.”

“What?” Athrun frowned and stared at his friend. “How can you ask that of her? Your own sister!”

“I didn't ask anything of her! The world demanded it… If she'd just had her head on straight and…”

“You're blaming her for this? You blame her for the war?” Athrun looked sick. “She's eighteen Kira! Eighteen! How can she stand against those ministers when they've been playing Politics for more years then she's been alive! Hell she was sixteen when she took on the Responsibilities of Orb after her father died. She managed for two years to keep that country whole; do you think it was ever easy on her? Most girls that age are worried about boys and cars and dresses… she was worried about the new transit systems, the new prison policies, the defense force… she had hospitals to rebuild homes to reestablish and people to give meaning too. And now you're going to put a war on her shoulders?”

“… Now you understand what I said before.” Kira frowned. “She had the power to stop this… instead she went and almost got married, but she did what she thought was right. She did what she thought she had to, to protect Orb.”

“Yes she did,” Athrun gritted his teeth. “Almost?”

“I got there in time…” Kira sighed and closed his eyes. “She was crying.”

“Rest I'll see to it that you're transferred to her side.” Athrun sighed. “You know it might be nice if you let her know you think of her as family too you know, you could call her sister every now and then… Idiot.”

“Well that was an interesting conversation.” Captain Gladys commented when he exited the room, startling him. “Your right you know… she is only eighteen there was nothing she could have done, even about the marriage.”

“Captain?” Athrun frowned.

“Come on, the doctor needs to talk to you. Her condition is stabilized by the way.” Gladys sighed. “She's not awake yet, but I'm giving you leave to be with them. In our present condition it will be a bit before we head out for another battle.”

“Yes captain.”

“I'm also overlooking the fact that you took off to hunt for them, in light of your emotions at the time I don't think there was anything else anyone could do. No one could have stopped you short of knocking you out.” Gladys smiled bitterly. “You'd do almost anything for those you love.”

“Commander Athrun… I have some unfortunate news.” The doctor stated quietly when they entered his office. “Captain Gladys informed me you had something of a relationship with Princess Cagalli. I'm aware that this relationship was of a more intimate nature…”

“What?” Athrun frowned.

“Lady Cagalli Yula Athha was pregnant with twins… I did a DNA test and they were a match for you.” The doctor explained quietly. “She was nearly three months along… the stress her body has endured, I'm afraid she miscarried.”

Athrun stared.

“I highly doubt she was even aware of her condition. With the circumstances and the stress she was under she probably thought it was all normal. I'm also very much aware that Lady Cagalli was not raised in a more maternal environment, and so it's not unlikely that she didn't know the signs as well.” The doctor struggled to keep himself uninvolved. “I'm sorry for your loss, but I… this is going to be very hard on Lady Cagalli… this wasn't her fault.”

“Twins… I was… a father… Cagalli?” Athrun blinked and struggled to grasp the situation. “Err… Kira Yamato is Cagalli's twin brother… when you get a chance I'm sure he'd appreciate being close to her…”

“She's still unconscious but you are welcome to go see her.” The doctor told him gently. “I'll see that Mr. Yamato is transferred when it's more appropriate.”

“Thank you…” Athrun quietly left and walked toward where Cagalli was.

“They're so young.” The doctor whispered. “What suffering we've given our children.”

“…” Gladys could only stare at the closed door, a single tear slipping down her face.

“Athrun?” Lunamaria asked quietly frowning and staring at the broken figure crumpled against the wall outside of the Princess' IC room.

“Luna? What is it?” Rei asked quietly coming up behind her. “Athrun?”

Athrun sat there shaking, tears pooled down his face as anguish washed over him again and again.

“Athrun? It'll be okay… I'm sure…” Luna tried.

“NO!” Athrun screamed and jerked from her touch, almost lashing out. “No it won't be! She… It's not alright! They're dead!”

“What's going on?” Shinn asked, shaking at the site of Athrun like this.

“Who's dead Athrun? Princess Cagalli is stabilized and your friend Kira woke up so he's…” Luna tried to reason with him.

“They're gone!” Athrun struggled against himself and pressed back hard against the wall. “She was pregnant…”

“WHAT?” everyone stared him.

“We never thought about it, I'm a coordinator, we can't have children easily so we just…” Athrun chuckled and shrugged. “It never even occurred to us… Lacus was supposed to be my only genetic match and she's with Kira… She didn't even know… How could she have? Who would have told her? I told her I couldn't forgive her… How can she forgive me for leaving her… twins… they were twins…”

“Oh god Athrun…” Luna hissed and couldn't help her own tears.

“She's such an idiot… Of course she would go after Kira, he's her brother… She knew better, but it's never stopped her before. How do I tell her…?” Athrun curled up and screamed.

“Get up!” Luna snapped. “GET UP AND GET IN THERE!”

“Wha?”

“Stand up and go… Stop crying and help her.” Luna ordered angrily, tears in her eyes as well, and stunning the others. “Your being like this won't help her any. Now get up and go in there.”

Athrun stood.

“You love her and you forgave her, if you didn't you wouldn't be like this so go help her. You both will just… help her.” Luna stated firmly. “She can't get through this alone.”

Athrun walked into the room.

“Luna?” Shinn asked quietly.

“She miscarried… it isn't something you just wave off. Those were their children. Theirs.” Luna smiled sadly. “I think all of us should understand just how hard this is for them.”

No one said a word and left quietly to think on it. Innocent blood had been spilt that day and it wasn't something anyone could just brush aside. All the self-righteousness they had felt couldn't withstand the fact that their `enemy' had been loved and had loved others. He was the same as them, perhaps more so than any of them wanted to admit. What were they fighting for? To kill Naturals? To defend the PLANTS? If they were defending the PLANTS then why were they on earth? Kill before you are killed? Wasn't it wrong? Who would call them on it and when would it end?

Durandal stared at the screen in shock.

“You're absolutely certain?” He whispered.

“There is no doubt,” The face muttered back. “She was pregnant with his children, and she wears his ring. I'm sure Captain Gladys sent you all the data from the Rendezvous. There are no uncertainties; they were definitely a couple, and a very close one.”

“Twins… she would have been the first to carry a Third Generations children. She already carried naturally past what most Coordinator woman have managed.” Durandal sat back heavily. “Is there any information on how this is even possible?”

“None as of yet, and it's not likely to be found out soon. Her condition is stabilized but there is still a real chance that she'll relapse and decline.” The voice stated coldly. “Should that happen we loose Athrun.”

“I fear we have already lost him.” Durandal frowned. “Unless we take a different form of attack… His relationship with the Orb Lioness is a weakness, we can use that.”

“I wouldn't recommend it.” The voice warned. “Athrun is not an enemy you would want alive, and should you use Cagalli to make it so, he'll be an enemy that death will hold no meaning to. Should you use or hurt what he considers his you'll find yourself fighting `Patrick Zala' in many ways.”

“True but I had no intentions of harming the Orb Princess.” Durandal smiled. “Indeed I will use her to capture Athrun completely but not in the manner you are thinking. I will merely be lending aid in a time when it is desperately needed. Later we can find out what we need to know.”

“Right.”

It was little over a week later and Cagalli had been settled in the medical ward at Carpentaria. She had been showing signs of waking for the half of the day. During the entire time as her body slowly recovered and she remained unconscious Athrun hadn't left her side. Meals were taken with her and showers were quick and done in the medical facilities locker room. He'd visit Kira on occasion to give him an update, but his friend was much better off then Cagalli.

“Cagalli…” Athrun whispered clutching her hand, her ring, his ring, glinted in the harsh medical lighting and he cried again. “I'm so sorry… I'm so sorry…”

“Ath… run?” Cagalli murmured roughly. “Hurts…”

“I know… I'm sorry…” Athrun struggled to smile.

“Crying…” Cagalli frowned and managed to open her eyes a bit.

“Yeah… I thought… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry.” Athrun bowed his head and trembled.

“Kira…”

“He's fine… when your stronger… they'll bring him here…”

“Hurts…”

“I know… I know… we'll get through this… I promise… I swear I won't leave you again… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…” He broke into sobs and clutched her desperately.

“Athrun…” Cagalli closed her eyes and felt tears slip down. “Why?”

“You… Cagalli…”

“Why hurt…”

Swallowing harshly he trembled and faced her. “Cagalli… we… you were pregnant. Your body couldn't handle the stress and it lost them.”

“Our baby… I lost our baby?” Cagalli whimpered.

“Twins Cagalli, our twins…” Athrun gave her a sad smile. “You didn't loose them… It's not your fault. It's not your fault. We'll get through this, I promise!”

“ATHRUN!” Cagalli wailed and clutched at him sobbing.

“I know,” Athrun climbed on the bed with her, careful of the wires still monitoring her and held her close as she cried. “We'll get through this… I promise I'm not going anywhere this time. I will protect you. I'm so sorry… Please I'm sorry.”

Well that's that for this chapter. Am I aware that this isn't GSD compliant, yup. But I kept coming back to that Episode where Shinn `Kills' Kira and Athrun screams. I just needed to right a story on it, so here it is. I'm aware that Cagalli and Athrun may not have been intimate, but I mean really they are just too familiar with each other. Plus their ages and the fact that they've almost died repeatedly I would be really surprised if they hadn't been. I mean really Kira was only sixteen when they showed that ep with Flay so really it isn't unrealistic. I'm not saying its right or wrong or anything just that in real life it would be incredibly surprising and a one in a thousand chance if it didn't. Athrun was completely aware of what he did to Cagalli during their rendezvous; otherwise he wouldn't have turned away. One of the reasons I really like this Anime is because the human mannerisms are very realistic, other then the fact everyone seems to cry at the drop of hat. Anyways I hope this clears a few things up, please review. Does anyone want to Beta this story? My e-mail is Animehuntress181@NetZero.com. Thanks!
