--Part 2--
Cagalli slipped away from her honeymoon bed, careful not to disturb the man still sound asleep. They had arrived at the hotel rather late last night, and instead of forcing the issue, each had agreed to simply sleep for the night.
But Cagalli was never one to while away precious hours needlessly in bed--especially when there was something she wanted to do.
She couldn't be sure, not yet. Her doctor had warned her that the enhancers would take at least two months before their effect took strength, but she felt sure, deep down inside her sure. She'd had to wait at least twenty-four hours' time before she could run the first test, but it was just about twenty-four hours later now, she thought, retrieving the plain white paper bag from her luggage and sliding surreptiously into the adjoining bathroom.
She threw the lock behind her and sat at the vanity, reverently parting the worn and abused paper and withdrawing the deceptively innocent-looking box. Her stomach fluttered nervously, and although she'd read the directions more than a hundred times already, she read them once more before beginning.
It was a simple test, accomplished easily enough within two minutes' time.
Two minutes, and she had her answer.
She stuffed a towel against her mouth in an attempt to muffle her laughter, but she couldn't stopper her tears.
When at last she felt she'd calmed down enough, she stood, limbs still shaky as she carefully repacked the test kit. She used the lighter she'd placed in the bottom of the bag previously to destroy the test results and then flushed the chard evidence down the toilet. She washed her face, cooling reddened eyes with a specialized cream from her makeup case. It was still dark in the bedroom, but she wasn't taking any chances.
Not with this.
She was grateful for her added caution when she returned to the darkened bedroom and found her husband stirring into wakefulness.
"Cagalli?" he called, voice groggy with sleep. "You all right?"
He wasn't cut or built fantastically. His features were not heart-stopping or model-worthy. But he was a good man. Attractive and friendly, with a good head on strong shoulders. More than capable of carrying the weight and pressure of ruling a county. Capable of supporting her when she would need it.
"Mmm. Bathroom," she explained, tucking the white paper bag and its test safely away inside her luggage before returning to bed.
"Gods, you're beautiful," he breathed, reaching out for her. His hand was large and warm as it slid up her thigh, dragging the satin material of her negligee with it. "I'll be gentle," he promised, rolling over her and aiming a kiss at her mouth. She turned her face away at the last minute, and his wet lips found her cheek instead, but he didn't seem to mind as he started kissing her face and neck eagerly.
She wanted to laugh, because she realized her husband thought her a virgin.
She wanted to cry, because this man was not her lover--he didn't know her body, know how to touch her and awaken her every nerve-ending in electric anticipation. He didn't know that gentle wasn't how she lived, how she loved. It wasn't her--wasn't what she wanted; wasn't what her body craved. But then, she was sure this man would never be capable of giving her body what it truly desired. That wasn't her purpose for marrying him.
She screwed her eyes shut instead and remembered another morning, another bed... another man's sweet kisses raining down over her skin with the tiny flicker of a tongue. She remembered the slide of hot flesh as she spread her legs wantonly, begging for the touch of that tongue against her most sensitive spot. She remembered hands, calloused from control a mobile suit, stroking her, loving her, worshiping her.
"I won't hurt you."
She wanted to tell him he couldn't. He didn't know how to touch her, so how could he possibly hurt her? Still, as she felt him trying to enter her, she was insanely thankful for the tiny shield she'd thought to insert yesterday; thankful for the protection it gave her against this man who was her husband but not her lover.
No, this clumsy man was nothing like her lover, she thought as he rutted against her, inside of her. His cum, which he released so easily, was not a precious gift, but a distraction to be dealt with. An annoyance that she itched to remove quickly, least it foul her.
She waited barely a minute before leaving the bed again, readjusting the negligee her husband hadn't even bothered to remove as she strode across the room.
"Cagalli?" he called after her.
"Bathroom," she answered without turning around.
She closed and locked the door behind her once again, tugging her negligee off and threw it carelessly into a corner. She wasn't even damp with perspiration she thought disgustedly, making use of a wad of toilet paper and the toilet features to clean herself. And then she looked at herself, studying her reflection in the mirrored walls critically. Her breasts, her hips, her ass...
Her lover had often told her how beautiful he thought she was. Sexy. Sometimes, he told her, the sight of her was enough to make him crazy with wanting her.
She'd laughed at him and loved him all the more enthusiastically as he showered her in compliments and kisses and touches. She touched herself now, feeling the weight of a breast, studying the curve of her back, and then her profile. Her tummy wasn't flat like some, but it wasn't pudgy either. Still, she tried to imagine what it would look like swollen with child.
Kira's child.
Their child.
And she couldn't tell him. Any of them. That was the truly sad part. She wouldn't be able to tell Kira that it was his baby growing inside her, cradled beneath her heart. She wouldn't be able to tell their child what a sweet and wonderful person its father was and how much she sincerely loved him.
She couldn't if she wanted to protect their child from the same world that would refuse to let her and Kira be together because they shared genes.
And she would do everything in her power and beyond to protect this child.
"Cagalli? Are you all right?" her husband called from behind the closed door. "I didn't hurt you, did I?"
She cracked the door open and offered him a small smile. "I guess I'm a little sore still from my monthly," she lied easily. "I was just going to take a bath and relax. Why don't you go back to sleep. It's early yet."
He looked at her, unsure, wary, but finally he conceded and left her alone. Alone to plan and prepare before she proceeded to the next step.
