Kathrine: An update!

JC: Not a big one, but only because it wouldn't have been right to leave you all with a huge cliffhanger.

Kathrine: For anyone who doesn't know, the announcement is at the end of the chapter.

JC: We hope you like this. We're trying to make Heero seem somewhat split. He's acting like the Over-Protective Big Brother, and then like Pilot 01 to others.

Kathrine: We're hoping it comes across like we wanted it to.

Warnings: Angst, Shounen Ai, Dark themes, AU!!

Disclaimer: If you think we own this… We have a GREAT mansion on Mars to sell ya! Dirt Cheap! ^_^

Chapter 20 - Uneasy Situations

Sanada Residence

" I can't believe you did that!" Ryo exclaimed as he finished getting dressed, his cordless phone against his ear. " No wonder why you're calling at four-thirty in the morning."

{ " I didn't know what else to do," Touma's voice sounded apprehensive in tone. " What am I supposed to do at school? He's stiff around us as it is and I don't know what I'll do if I royally screwed up everything." }

" Well…" Ryo thought a moment on what to say. " First you need to calm down. I don't think you messed up anything or else Seiji would have tried to break your neck yesterday. Have you ever thought that he might like you?"

{ " What?!" Touma was taken aback obviously. " You might want to see how much of your brain your hair has devoured lately. Blondie definitely doesn't want me. He couldn't…" }

" And you say that I have low self-esteem," he sighed. " Really, how do you know. He's not the rainbows-hearts-and-flowers type, so he probably wouldn't tell you if he did. And taking from how comfortable he is with you compared to anyone else…"

{ " That's because he thought I was someone he could trust," Touma countered in his own persecution. " But I ruined that when I kissed him. Hell, I'm surprised his brother didn't try to dismantle me or something when he showed up to get him." }

" His brother walked IN on you?!" Ryo thought he had heard wrong.

{ " Don't make me feel worse than I already do…" }

" No, no, you're doing a GREAT job of that on your own," the raven-haired boy commented sardonically. " Now I have to go so I'll see you at school. You should just try to relax and talk to Seiji then. You won't know how bad things are until you talk to him. You could be giving yourself an ulcer over absolutely nothing."

{ Touma sounded even more dejected, " That's if he goes to school. His brother is so over protective he might just make him lay low. Especially since the people he works with are probably searching for him." }

" Don't sound so pessimistic," his friend admonished him, a frustrated sigh in his tone. " He'll be there. We have to talk to Professor Yagyu, remember? Blondie will show. Now I have to go, I have a long way to walk. See ya." He hung up the phone after his farewell and put it back on its base. He wouldn't keep him out of school, he thought. Would he?

Apartment in Shinjuku

" You're not going."

" Nani?" Seiji couldn't believe what he was hearing. " Nii-chan, I must go to school." He'd been waiting for his brother to return. He had taken him to an apartment in the downtown Tokyo area and left him there, promising to be back by morning. The blonde hadn't been able to sleep that night and merely sat on the couch doing nothing. He was so used to going for hours on end doing such that time meant nothing. But now he was hoping to go to school, uniform or not, but Heero refused.

" No," his brother was stern and adamant about his decision. " They are still looking for you. I have yet to speak to Lady Une about this and she will not take it lightly. We cannot risk you going to school."

" But Nii-chan…" Seiji didn't know what to say. He and the others had agreed on meeting with Professor Yagyu in hopes that he would have information that they much needed. But now he wasn't even allowed to go.

" No Seiji," Heero repeated. He hoped that his younger sibling would see that this really was for the best. The Preventers were meant to protect the people and remove any threats to peace. They weren't sure what to make of what had happened the evening before, but he had no doubts that they perceived any person involved to be a threat. He would not allow them to do anything to his brother.

And that wasn't the only reason. He didn't want Seiji near that boy, Touma. He was more than sure that he also had something to do with this and having the blue-haired teen near his brother would only increase the chances of Seiji being discovered. At least, that was the reason he told himself he didn't want the boy near his brother.

" Nii-chan, there is much that has happened and I must go to school in order to figure more of this out," he told him.

" What Seiji?" he asked him, deciding now was the time to broach the subject. " You didn't tell me last night and we didn't have the time. What is going on? What was that 'armor' you were wearing last night? I know it was you, the green one."

" I-" the blonde halted. Could he tell his brother? Before now he had no such concerns. But now he wondered if he was willing to let his brother become part of this. He's suffered so much, he thought. Just like I have. Should I bring him into something that could only cause him more pain? Then he thought of how his brother would react if he didn't tell him. He would be upset (thought he wouldn't show it) that Seiji didn't trust him enough to do so. And then he would even more protective than he was now.

" I have been chosen for my destiny," he finally decided on the truth. " I have had dreams since I was a child, dreams of a demon of some kind seeking to destroy everything and myself as well. I found this on Saturday." He put his hand into his pocket and pulled out the dimly glowing green orb with the kanji of 'courtesy' swirling in its center.

" What is it?" the brunette stared at the crystal, his eyes searching analytically. " What does it have to do with anything?"

" It is the source of the 'armor' you saw me bear," he replied. " It is the part of me that has been missing for so long. I have been chosen to fight those that attacked yesterday and I must follow my destiny."

" So this is 'mystical', 'magic'?" Heero replied instantly, not fully believing. He would have thought it completely impossible if he had not watched his brother floating in the center of a bright light before being engulfed and coming out wearing green armor. But this can't be true… he told himself. This is completely improbable. There's no logical explanation for this. There is no such thing as demons, magic, or anything else like it. There must be a scientific reason for it.

" I feel your apprehension…your confusion," the blonde spoke, seeming as if he wanted to reach out and touch his older sibling. " But I cannot give you the answers that you seek. I know them not myself. That is why I must go to school today, I believe that I can find them there. If I must I will try to show you."

Heero didn't speak for a moment. He wanted to ignore all of this, to act like nothing was real. But he knew better than to doubt his brother and wasn't sure he could deal with a live show of the truth he wanted to push away. But that doesn't change the fact that he is wanted for questioning by the Preventers, he reminded himself. They cannot get to him. I know what they will do to him if they get the chance. I won't allow a repeat of yesterday.

" No," he held his answer still. " You will not leave this apartment unless you have to. You are not going to classes today and not tomorrow. My decision is final."

Seiji lowered his head reflexively. He had heard and felt that tone from others before. But at the same time he could feel his brother's concern, even if his face was blank. He was afraid of something, thought he would never admit to anything like that out loud, even to him…ESPECIALLY to him. I must go to school, he thought. I MUST be there. This wasn't something he had a choice in either way, save on whether to obey his brother or not. Either way his path was already chosen for him, to let destiny go its course, or remain trapped as the prisoner of brotherly concern.

Heero could see the indecisiveness in the blonde's eyes. " It's that boy, isn't it?" he asked, his eyes cut.

" Nani?" Seiji looked up at him, eyes meeting. The change had been instant. The fear and concern were still there, but so was anger, which was fast in rising.

" You really want to see that boy, Touma, don't you?" he asked. " Is that why you're fighting me about this?"

" Touma?" Seiji didn't know where this had come from. " Nii-chan, he doesn't…"

" Yes he does have something to do with this," the brunette's eyes hardened. " I know there is something between you, even if you don't. He's trying to take advantage of you."

Lavender/blue eyes widened in shock. Where had this come from?! " Iie!" he replied. " T-Touma is not like that! He is my friend! He wouldn't-"

" Yes he would Seiji," he retorted. " Don't be naïve. People turn on other people at anytime and in every way. They betray you and trick you."

" Touma would not," Seiji spoke with a tone of conviction, even though his eyes had turned away. " He has been so…so kind to me. He helped me at school, to cover my scars, to make friends. He IS my friend. I can feel it when I'm with him. He cares for me. It-It's not like when we were with Doctor J. I can FEEL that he cares. It's so calm and caring and…and WARM. H-He wants to protect me like you do, it's in hi-his heart. I-I can feel it. Touma won't hurt me…he CARES about me."

Heero felt everything become clear as he heard his brother speak, his eyes turned away, stumbling over words he was so unused to, confused by, and yet seemed to accept so well. He had been so much more difficult in coming to terms with others' feelings about him, their care and love. But he didn't have the gift of knowing how they truly felt, not the lies, but the truth. It only seemed that Seiji couldn't realize his own truths.

" You feel something for him," he realized. " Are you in love with him, that Touma?"

Seiji froze at those words. How could he be in love? He barely even knew what love truly was. The only love he had ever known had been from his Nii-chan, until just two weeks ago when Duo (and even Wufei) became a part of his long lost family. He couldn't be in 'love' with Touma! He was his friend!

" Seiji," Heero took his attention. " It's true…?"

The blonde didn't know how to answer him. " I-I…" he had trouble with the words. " I am not sure. I do not know what I feel. Such things are foreign to me."

It was the exact answer Heero expected. " I know," he replied. He turned away then, going to the door. " Stay here Seiji. I will return, I will bring Duo." His brother didn't move or anything else. He just sat on the couch with a far off, confused look in his eyes. Yes, Duo would know how to handle a situation like this. He was more in tuned with his feelings and those of others than he himself. He would only make this worse for the both of them. And while Duo was with Seiji, he would have his own questions answered by the one person who could answer them best.

Seiji didn't realize he had gone. Everything was so complicated to him now. How could he love his first true friend he had ever had? It was wrong. He couldn't love anyone like that, not the way that Heero loved Duo. He wasn't supposed to love.

/ " You're only meant to serve and destroy. People will use you and you will kill them. You will be perfect…perfect…No one will care for you, not like I do… You're not meant to love or be loved. You're only meaning in life is to destroy…to destroy. All things of meaning are to be destroyed." /

Seiji's mind settled on those words, all spoken so long ago by the one person he never truly wanted to believe, yet still so fresh in his thoughts. He wasn't meant to love, he couldn't love. I'm only meant to destroy, his mind whispered mechanically, like a long engraved mantra. I'm only meant to destroy. All those I care for I will destroy. No one was there to see the blank look cloud over the blonde's eyes.

Preventers Ground Zero/Headquarters

" The news crews are going nuts at the thought that someone actually made an attack against the Preventers," Duo sighed. " God, and this is all after what happened with the Eve Wars. They should expect shit like this. Peace isn't perfect."

Quatre shook his head. " They prefer to believe that such organizations as this one are invincible and people wouldn't dare go against them, like how people first were with the Alliance and OZ. Who can blame them though, really? They want to believe that they are safe, that they don't have to worry about war or anything like it anymore."

" The press is not our main concern at this moment," Lady Une stated, his voice and blank as it always was during a meeting. They stood around the large table in the debriefing room, which was in another section of the Headquarters that was safe when the attack occurred. Trowa and Wufei stood short ways back, both leaning against the walls, both attentive to what was being said. " We have to find out where these people came from. They broke in here, used some sort of weapon to blast a hole into our building half the size of a mobile suit."

" It was the tiger and one of those armored fighters," Wufei stated, his voice calm those his words sounded quite ludicrous, even to him after witnessing it. " One of the robotic-looking armored soldiers was going after Seiji, but a tiger was keeping him away. It then threw itself and the soldier through the wall. But they were not harmed by it."

" They could be robotic creations we don't know about," Une pointed out. " Terrorists in smaller robotic fighting suites and mechanical beasts to accompany them. One might have malfunctioned and the other would have to fight it off."

" No," Wufei shook his head. " I saw them and how they interacted. The woman, she wasn't wearing any metal at all, save the large gold pendant over her chest. And yet the shot I took at her was deflected as if it were an irritating fly. Both of them, the soldier and woman, were angry at the tiger. The woman was shocked, almost as if the tiger wasn't supposed to be there."

" As I said," Une reasoned, " It might have malfunctioned and showed up there."

" But how?" Trowa finally spoke. " How did they get into the room? The window? How could a tiger fit through the window? At that high up off of the ground? From what you're saying, they might have been able to use the robotic armor, but I fail to believe that it could fit through."

" They cut down the freaking door to get out," Duo reminded them, going over what he had been told previously. " Why would they do that if they wanted in?"

" They were looking for Heero," Wufei stated. " They were after him and Seiji. But they…didn't even know his name. Called him by the name his brother uses, 'Nii-chan'." Suddenly everyone turned to look at Duo, the chestnut-haired boy beginning to feel as if he was under interrogation from the stares they were giving him.

Une's demanding stare was the worst of them all. "Where is Heero?" her tone practically commanded him to answer her. " You have yet to explain why he disappeared from the sight of a terrorist attack, returned, only to disappear again, and I know it has to do with the fact that his brother is missing as well."

" I am here." All eyes turned to stare at the brunette in the doorway.

" Who gave you authorization to leave Ground Zero?" Une demanded. " Where is your brother? What information does he have about this attack against the Preventers?"

Heero ignored all of them, moving to the side of the table and grabbed Duo by the arm, dragging him from his seat towards the door. He paid little to no attention to anyone else in the room, only sparing a glance for each of his fellow former Gundam Pilots.

" Hey!" the chestnut-haired teen exclaimed. " Hold off would ya?!" His lover turned to look at him and he shut him mouth immediately. That look meant one thing…something had happened.

Une's eyes were stony as they stared at Heero. " Yuy," she called to him, " You are out of line and guilty of insubordination. Stop now and I won't be forced to have you detained. You are obligated to report any information concerning acts or people who might be a threat to Universal Peace, and I know you know far more than you are giving."

Duo looked back and forth between the two and Heero stopped before the door. His lover was still grasping his arm, but forcing himself to not clench it in frustration, knowing it would possible break said appendage. Instead cobalt blue eyes turned to stare with a hard, cold expression that was so recognizable upon the youthful features. " This has nothing to do with you and the Preventers," he stated.

" And yet an attack was made upon Preventers Headquarters," she replied.

" It has nothing to do with the Preventers," he stated once more. " This has nothing to do with any of you. You cannot know what is happening, and you are incapable of doing anything to stop it. All you will do is get in the way, and those in the way tend to die." With that he turned to leave once more, but Une was not finished.

" This will cost your job and freedom," she pointed out. " Or worse, your brother." She barely had time to move her head from the gleaming object that was thrown effortlessly, yet forcefully at her head. Turning at the loud bang resounding in the room, she saw the silver metal sticking out of the wall. Heero's Preventers Badge.

" Wrong," he stated. " I keeping what I need to." He then opened the door and dragged Duo out behind him, the metal sliding entrance shutting with a hiss of air.

Une stood in shock, but refused to let it show. Instantly, she went for her communicator, ready to call reinforcements to take Heero into custody, but was stopped by the unexpected hand of Trowa. " Do not," he told her. " He understands this far more than you or we will."

" Someone has to follow him," she stated. " I will not tolerate this."

" Do you remember who you're talking about?" Wufei asked, his voice somewhat sarcastic. " Do not think that you can merely have someone 'follow' him and know where he is going. Yuy is not that incompetent."

" Something is not right," Quatre whispered, eyes still on the door. " Something is happening, something bigger than what we ever have seen or dealt with. And Heero's right, I don't think we can do anything about it. Things such as this must run their course. To interfere would only make things far more dangerous than they already are."

The head of the Preventers was unsure and yet… she knew that these boys were not ones to take lightly. She had underestimated them before and in the end that had led to mistakes. But they had also helped to open her eyes to many things. Heero would not do something like this unless he felt it had a purpose, a reason, she thought. I just hope that it doesn't get them all killed in the end.

JC: And that is where s shall be left.

Kathrine: This story is one of most prized works. It definitely looks to be our longest.

JC: And so, we have our announcement, if you are not already aware. As of the completion of this chapter… We are on hiatus.

Kathrine: We are taking a break from our fan fiction to put some effort into our original novel that we are working on.

JC: We've always had a goal to have our first novel published before we graduate High School. Therefore, we are going to try and accomplish it, but our fanfics always distract us.

Kathrine: As it is, we are slowly coming up with less and less inspiration. We don't give up on fics easily, no matter how bad they are. So we are instead taking a break.

JC: I know when we return to this, we'll have a lot more to work with.

Kathrine: That's why we left this story here…instead of HUGE cliffhanger we had planned for the end of the chapter. That will instead become part of the next when we come to it.

JC: We don't know how long it will be until we achieve our goal, but look at it this way in worst-case terms… We don't graduate for two years.

Kathrine: We might update stories somewhere along the way, but only if we get a burst of inspiration to write for one. So don't expect it…just think of it as a big surprise if it happens.

JC: And with that…we give our heartfelt THANK YOU to anyone who has stood by us with our works. We appreciate your support more than you know.

Kathrine: Next time we're here, we hope to be able to say 'Go buy our book!'.

JC: Until next time. Sayonara, Tomodachi! ^_^
