Chapter 2
Duo was soo bored. The house was quiet, it was still early, and yet there was nothing to do! He had ran through the thousands of channels on his television five times and couldn't find anything to watch, the Internet had been worn out an hour ago, and he wanted something that he and his friends could do together. At that moment he was searching through a magazine while lying on his bed, a look of utter boredom of his face. He finally came to the Fashions page and an idea came to him.
" That's it!" he shouted, jumping up and rushing to his door. " Hey guys! I got an idea on what we can do tonight!"
A door only two down from his own opened and a small blonde stepped into the hall. " Duo, what has you so excited?" he asked.
" We've stayed in the house since we got here, Quatre," Duo replied with a frown. " We need to go do something! Have some fun! Get Heero and Wufei to do something that doesn't involve martial arts or a computer!"
" And what would that be?" he turned his head and saw that said two people were standing in the doorway of their bedroom.
" Let's go to the mall!" he jumped up and down like a hyper child. " We'll get to see the newest things on sale, meet other kids, it's vacation for God's sake! C'mon Quatre, please!"
" Well?" he glanced inside the room that he secretly shared with Trowa (a secret to his father anyway) and raised a questioning brow to said boy as he sat on his bed. Trowa shrugged slightly, meaning that he truly didn't care, but it Quatre wanted he would go. " It sounds like fun," he agreed.
" Please guys, I'm dying in here!" Duo pressured. " I'm used to being around bunches of other kids! I NEED to go out and it would be great if we all went together." He gave his usually pleading gaze to Heero and Wufei, not truly sure how it would affect them. It worked on everyone else, but Trowa who would get pulled in by Quatre anyway, though he'd never tried on either of those two before.
" All right Maxwell, just get that look of your face," Wufei conceded after turning to go back into his room. " You like some begging animal in a pet store window." Heero followed after Wufei, but the braided-brunette knew that he was coming if the Chinese boy was. He jumped up and down, a fist in the air showing his victory.
" Yes, works every time!" he cheered. " Better get ready we're leaving as soon as possible." With that he rushed back into his own room and shut the door.
Quatre watched the whole thing with a chuckle just barely under control. " He sure does get his way," he smiled before going to get ready himself.

DING DONG…DING DONG…DING DONG…
" Will someone get the door?" Mia yelled tiredly from her study. She'd only gotten home twenty minutes earlier and still needed to get some research done for her work at Tokyo University. She hoped someone who actually cared was listening, but knew when her boys were occupied most would ignore the doorbell.
" I'll get it!" Rowen yelled up to her from the den.
" Arigato!" she called back and returned to her work. Rowen stood from his seat where he had been beating Kento at another martial arts video game. He paused the game and headed towards the door, but as soon as he was gone Kento restarted and proceeded to kick Rowen's defenseless player's ass. He knew the other boy would come back and would be more than angry so he just enjoyed himself while he could. Oblivious, Rowen went and opened the door quickly.
" Hey, how ya-" his voice was halted and turned into a girl-like squeal as he jumped into the arms of the visitor, kissing his thoroughly on the lips.
Green eyes laughed at him as strong arms wrapped around him. " Well hello," a tenor voice greeted him. Red auburn hair swayed behind its owner and Rowen continued to kiss him. Then suddenly he pulled away from his arms and punched him in the chest.
" Why didn't you call and tell me you were coming back?!" he shouted.
" I wanted to surprise you," the other winced slightly at the sting from the other boy's punch.
Kento walked into the foyer to see what was going on and smiled, waving at the visitor, " Anubis! When you'd get into town?"
" Just this a few hours ago, but I had to get with a friend of mine that I am staying with during the summer," he replied. " Then I came right over here to visit my little Bluebird."
" Don't call me that!" Rowen growled, smacking him harshly on the arm.
Kento laughed at the two of them before turning towards the stairs, seeing Ryo standing at the top. " Hey Anubis," the raven-haired boy greeted him. " I thought you'd be showing up sooner or later. Rowen's been unbearable without you around."
" Hey!" the blue-haired boy frowned. " Why's everyone picking on me?"
" Because you turn red when you're angry," Anubis told him. " And the red and blue certainly don't match, making you look adorably ridiculous." Rowen didn't wait another moment before he hit him again. " If you're going to keep hitting me then I'll just leave…"
" No, you can stay for dinner," Rowen grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the den. " Cye's cooking."
" Still? I thought that at least one of you would learn to cook," the red-haired boy sighed.
" Well, I think Sage knows how, but you know him," the boy shrugged. " He won't tell ya anything. But that's what Ryo's for." Anubis chuckled sitting down on the couch with him. He'd missed being there with the others, especially Rowen. He'd spent three years at the Mansion, studying under the Professor Koji's tutelage. His family wanted him to learn all he could from the man and he had in the time he'd been there. But he'd been called home after he'd died and had left right after the funeral.
He'd been there the day that every boy had arrived, save Ryo. He remembered Rowen, quiet, secluded, and feeling like no one actually gave a care due to his parents lacking in affection. He was only a year and a half older then the blue-haired boy and wanted to befriend him, but he seem to have the impression that people only toyed with him and didn't really want to be his friend. That changed though after a while, but it took a few months to open him up even a little. Then they'd dated each other, their feelings towards each other growing more than most friendships.
He's grown, he noticed, realizing that the other boy had indeed gotten taller and less lanky. He was still abnormally thin for his height, nothing to Sage though, but he could tell it wasn't from lack of eating. He wondered how the others had changed from when he'd last seen then. Kento seemed pretty much the same if only more muscular, but he thought the boy would always be that way. He hadn't gotten too much of a close look at Ryo on the stairs so he wasn't sure how much he'd changed.
" Good to have ya back, mate," he turned and saw Cye leaning against the doorway leading to the kitchen. " We missed you."
" I'm glad to hear that," he smiled. The auburn-haired boy looked pretty much the same, save that he had gotten taller as well and his hair had gotten longer, including his side burns. " You know, I remember Rowen threatening to cut your side burns off in your sleep."
"Yes, and I threatening to throw his books in the lake," Cye shrugged. " You know how much he loves his books." He then smiled. " Now dinner is ready so everyone get to the dining room."
" Of course, Cye's cooking cannot be passed up," he stated, already noticing that Kento had left the room. " You better make sure there's actually a dinner still in there."
" Oooooh, Kento!" he turned around and caught the other boy leaning appreciatively over the table in the kitchen where he had the food set out. " You get to the other room and sit down now! Or else you'll have to start cooking for yourself!"
" No Cye! See? I'll be good!" he put his hands in the air and walked sideways out the door leading to the dining room. Cye shook his head at the other boy before going out the opposite door into the foyer and too the stairs. " Ryo, Mia, Sage! Dinner!"
*****
Sage sat at his desk, the same place he'd been sitting at since they had all gotten home from school, eyes glued to the paper in front of him. The paint that had used on the note was mostly dry now, but it didn't matter, the point had been gotten. Gods, what the hell did he mean by that? he wondered. How COULD he know? He thought about the strange smell he'd gotten around his locker. Could someone be in on this that does know? What if he's a Recruit, waiting to become one of Them and using this as his initiation? God, I thought that I was safe for at least another few months.
He knew that he couldn't stay in Tokyo with Mia and the others for much longer. He was able to pass for fourteen when he arrived, but now was sixteen in their eyes and people would start to get suspicious. He hadn't changed since the day he had arrived, save his hair growing only to be cut to the his preferred length. Mia felt like she had failed in her attempts to open him up to people, yet he felt no need to open up to the other boys when he wouldn't be staying long. But then there was Ryo…
That's when he heard a knock at his door. Speak of the…he shook his head at the irony, knowing who was at his door. " It's not locked Ryo," he called out.
It was opened and the other boy stepped in, smiling with his hand behind his head. " You know you really creep me out sometimes with the way you do that," he told him. "It's like no one can catch you off guard."
"No, I am just more observant that most and tend to remember things," he replied. "But that does tend to 'creep people out'." His eyes then turned back to the note on the desk. Ryo saw his eyes stray and knew what he was thinking about.
" You're going, right? It might not be Shingo," the raven-haired boy pointed.
" I know," Sage agreed, " but I don't care. It's a point of honor. I won't back down." Even if it hadn't struck such a cord within him, the blonde would have gone on the mere fact that someone challenged him. Shingo had been a pain in his side since he'd first moved into the Koji Mansion and started going to school. He always wanted to start something, the boy becoming even more infuriated act the fact that Sage always bested him. But now he had stepped onto territory no one was allowed to set foot upon and would pay dearly for it.
" Well, you should leave in a little while if you want to be on time," Ryo told him. " And I know how much you love to be on time. Though you cut it pretty close when you get ready in the morning. Sometimes I wonder if you're a girl in disguise." He thought joking would ease the tension he could see in the other's shoulders. He knew his efforts were well worth it when he saw the small smile break out across the blonde's face.
" See? You CAN smile! Kento owes me fifty bucks," Ryo went on. " Now if only you would do that in public I could get a hundred from Rowan."
" You make bets about me?" Sage raised a curious brow, tilting his sunglasses down on his face.
" Not really, but hey I sure could make a lot of money if we did," he laughed.
Sage chuckled and nodded in agreement. Then a solemn thought came to his mind, I'm leaving Ryo behind as well when I leave. With him around I don't feel less alone, like when I was with… He felt a prickle at the corner mind just from the thought and ignored it. He didn't want to be reminded right now, not when he had so many things to think about already.
" Sage?" Ryo's voice brought him back to the present. "Why the far off look? Is this thing with Shingo really got you so tense?"
" No, I just have many things to think about," he stated. " What was the reason why you sought me out Ryo?"
" Ummm, well you didn't come down and get your dinner," Ryo explained. "You usually come down when Cye calls you, take your plate back up here and bring it down when your finished. I wondered why you didn't this time."
"Like I said, I have things on my mind," he shrugged. " I guess I just didn't hear him calling. Sorry, if it worried you."
" I-I wasn't worried," Ryo stumbled a little over his words. He didn't know what it was about the blonde that caused him to act so strangely, but he couldn't help it. " And I'm supposed to tell you…"
" That Anubis is back," the blonde nodded. " I heard them."
" Oh, well…I guess I should go…" he started.
" All right," Sage turned back to his desk and Ryo knew he was being dismissed in a way. He headed towards the door, but stopped short and glanced back at he blonde.
" Yes Ryo?" Sage asked, turning his head a little.
" Just know Sage, that I am here if ya need to talk to someone," he told him. " Even if it's about something you think that I wouldn't understand I can always get some practice in for my listening skills."
The blonde said nothing, but then smiled a little brighter than before. " Arigato Ryo," he thanked him. " I'll remember that."
Ryo grinned at him before exiting the room and shutting the door quietly. He then walked down the hall and down the stairs, the grin still plastered on his face. Whenever Sage smiled at him he felt like one of the silly girls that fawned over him at school, though luckily the blonde didn't ignore him. He entered the den and saw that Anubis, Rowen, and Mia were watching the television. He knew that Kento had kitchen duty and had probably begged Cye into keeping him company.
" Ryo, did you find out why Sage skipped dinner?" Mia questioned. She'd joined them for dinner and opted to spending time with their visitor instead of going straight back to work. But she didn't understand why Sage had decided against even coming to get his dinner like he normally did.
" He just didn't feel hungry right now," he lied, hoping they wouldn't catch. He wasn't going to tell them about the challenge Sage had received, it would betray the trust the he held so dear.
" How is he?" Anubis questioned. " How much has he changed since I've been gone?"
" None," Rowen shrugged. " He looked just the same way he did when he moved in. It's like he just doesn't change at all, even the way he acts is the same."
" Really?" Anubis seemed somewhat interested in that. " You've all changed in some way. He hasn't changed at all?"
" No, why?" Rowen gave him a dark look.
" It's just that I expected you all to changed some way," he saved himself quickly. I've been gone for almost a whole year. And at your ages you should be growing often."
" Well, not him," the blue-haired boy replied.
" You might have changed but your still my little bluebird," Anubis kissed him on the cheek.
" Don't call me that," Rowen warned him. " You know I HATE that name!" He then quickly picked up one of the couch pillows and hit him in the face with it. " Take that!" Anubis pulled the pillows from his grasp and threw it over to the armchair nearby. He then wrapped his arms around the others chest.
" You need to learn manners," he admonished him playfully. " Don't make me put you in cage."
" Cage?!" Rowen raged. " I am NOT your pet!" Pulled away from the others grasp harshly and stood up. Anubis saw the hurt pout on his face and knew that the blue-haired boy was just trying to get him to apologize. He also knew that if he didn't Rowen wouldn't talk to him for the rest of the night as punishment.
Standing, he put his arms around the other's waist. " You know I didn't mean it like that," he told him. " I was only joking. Don't be mad at me, please?" He kissed Rowen on the cheek and the other sighed.
" Fine," he gave in, knowing it was futile. His boyfriend had been gone too long and he couldn't just stay mad at him right now.
" You know you two are like a new married couple," Ryo pointed out. " You fight then make up in less than five seconds after arguing with each other. And Rowen's got the temper to be the new wife."
" What?!" said boy spun around and glared at the other. " You gonna get it for that Ryo!" The raven-haired boy didn't even waist another second before dashing off out of the room, an enraged housemate on his heels.
*****
Sage could hear the laughter and ruckus from downstairs clearly. He didn't plan on joining in, he never did. And besides that, knowing that Anubis had returned left him on edge. There was something about the other boy that just made him feel uneasy. He didn't seem like a bad person, it just always felt like he had to be careful when he was around him or something could happen that would destroy everything he had worked so hard for.
He got up from his seat at his desk and walked over to his closet, pushing it open and looking down. There was a bag on the floor of the closet and Sage knew that only one thing was in it. He kneeled down and unzipped it, slipping his hand in and pulling out a small black object. It was a cellular phone that he'd been given that day he'd moved into the Koji Mansion. It was different than most phones for it was only able to call one specific number.
I wasn't supposed to use this unless I had to, he thought. I just don't know whom else to turn to for advice right now. She always knows what to do. He turned on the phone, and was glad that it was one the type that didn't need to be recharged unless used. Being left in a closet for two years would have definitely tired out the battery then. He pressed the speed dial button and listened to it ring three times before someone answered.
" Hello Sage, what troubles you?" the female voice asked on the other end.
" Grandmother Kayura," he sighed out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Something's happened, something that I'm not sure how to deal with."
" What? Have the other boys discovered anything?" she asked.
" No," he told her.
" Then is has to do with the boy Shingo from school," she stated knowingly.
" Yes," the blonde confirmed, used to her ways of knowing things before anyone told her. " He has challenged me. He left me a message and says to know what I am."
" He could be bluffing," she stated.
" I know that, but something just seemed wrong about the entire thing," he went on. " It was as if someone else was there as well."
" It has left you with unease, you should rightfully be so," she replied understandingly. " This 'challenge' is supposed to take place at your school, everything shall be shown to you then."
" What?" Sage's eyes widened before cutting into slits that he knew she could feel even through their distance apart. " You had a vision. You saw all of this."
" Yes," she agreed.
" But you will not tell me because everything must run its course," he sighed.
" As you well know," she confirmed. " As much as I love you, I cannot tempt Fate's hand for you. All must run as Fate sees fit."
" I understand Grandmother," he told her.
" Whatever happened to Granny?" she asked suddenly.
" Two hundred years happened Grandmother," he told her with a laugh in his voice. " Goodbye."
" But for not as long as you think," she replied before hanging up. Sage stared at the phone in confusion before turning it off and placing it back in the duffel bag. Looking at the clock on his nightstand, he knew it was time to go and stood. Something was going to happen, he knew that just from speaking with the woman that had cared for him during his mortal youth. But he also knew that nothing could change it save from him not going, but he wasn't that type of person.
It's time, he decided and exited his room, locking his door after he was out. He walked down the stairs and to the living room, knowing that who he searched for was there. And right he was, for Mia was sitting on the couch, laughing as she watched the wrestling match between Ryo and Rowen, which Ryo happened to be winning quite easily.
" Mia, I shall be taking the corvette," he told her. " I have something I need to do and will be back in a while."
" Oh all right," she nodded, confused as to what he needed to do so late at night. " Be careful while your out." Sage gave an inclination of his head, showing he understood, but then his eyes strayed to the person sitting next to the red-haired woman.
" Hello Sage," Anubis smiled at him. " Nice to see you again."
" Hello Anubis, gomen for not being able to stay longer," he apologized, though he wasn't all that sorry. He then glanced at Ryo, who was sitting on Rowen. Not saying another word he left out the door, taking the keys off the hook next to it. Everyone seemed to have quieted as they listened to the starting and pulling out of the black car.
As soon as the sound died away, Rowen took the opportunity to flip over the distracted Ryo and lay above him, hands trapped by his arms and legs by his knees. " Okay, now are ya going to tell us where he's going?" he asked.
" What? Why would I know?" Ryo asked, not liking where this was going.
" Because I can tell that ya do," Rowen leaned in closer. " And don't try to lie because we all know that you're horrible at it."
Ryo was caught, but he wasn't about to tell them about the note of the challenge behind the school. Sage would never have forgiven him if he'd done that. But what if Shingo's going to pull something? he thought. Sage is going up against him and maybe all of his friends alone. He might be strong and fast, but he can't take all of them on.
" Shit," Ryo let his head fall against the floor. " I knew this was a bad idea."
" What's a bad idea?" Kento asked as he and Cye exited the kitchen, finally finished with it.
" Sage is going to face Shingo behind the school in a half hour," he sighed.
" What?" Mia gasped. " Sage is going to fight someone?"
" Only this jerk who keep raggin' on him at school, or at least tries to anyway," Kento explained. " Sage just blows him off or embarrasses him in front of everyone."
" Why didn't you say something earlier?" Cye asked him.
" Sage doesn't want anyone else there," the raven-haired boy explained. " He wants to do this on his own and I respect that."
" So why give in now?" Rowen inquired.
" Because Shingo will probably pull out of the tricks and I don't want him to get into anything he can't handle," he answered. " NOW LET ME UP!"
" Okay, okay," the blue-haired moved and he shoved him off of him completely. He got up quickly and headed towards the door.
" Wait up, we're going with you," Kento told him.
" What?!" Ryo's eyes widened. " No, Sage is already going to be upset that I told you. He doesn't want anyone else there as it is."
" Did he tell you that?" Rowen asked.
" No, but…"
" Then you don't know that," he interrupted. " See? He could have wanted back up but you never said anything." Ryo frowned, for they both knew that Sage wouldn't have said so, but he never wanted other people around anyway. Now it was too late though, they were going to go whether or not he went along.
" Sage is going to hate me," he sighed sadly.
" Hey, don't worry 'bout it," Rowen assured him. " We'll just say we had Kento sit on you until you told us. He'll understand."
" Of course he will," Ryo spat sarcastically.
" See? I knew you would see reason," Rowen ignored his sarcasm. " Now let's get outta here so that Blondie's not alone for too long." He grabbed the keys to the jeep from the hook by the door and opened the door.
" Now wait a minute," Mia stood up. " You all can't just go out brawling!"
" That's why I'm going to make sure they stay out of trouble," Anubis reassured her. " We'll just bring Sage home and that is it."
" Well…all right, but be careful," she sighed. She knew she couldn't stop them anyway, but she didn't want any of them getting hurt. " Don't do anything stupid."
" Don't worry," Cye smiled at her. " They can't get into much trouble."
" Let's go already!" Kento urged them.
" Oh no Rei Faun, you're not going!" Cye put his foot down. " I'm not letting you get yourself into anything!"
" Then you can come to and make sure," Kento shrugged. " Either way I'm not just gonna let them go into this and leave me out if something does happen." Cye sighed (cute!) and nodded.
" C'mon whoever is going 'cause I'm leaving now," Rowen called out and walked out the door. Ryo followed behind him with a less than enthusiastic look on his face. He just KNEW that Sage was going to hate him for this.
*****
" That ass better get here sooner or later," Shingo grumbled as he waited against the school building. His friends were waiting in secret positions around the yard just for the moment to jump out and beat the blonde within an inch of his life. Then he got the honors of dealing with him afterwards. He looked backwards towards the large bushes where his two most trusted lackeys were hiding, but neither extended their hand in the signal they'd thought up.
" Janzo, Hiroto?" he called out, but neither answered him. " C'mon guys answer me, he ain't even here yet!" That's when he felt a cold chill settle in his spine. Something was definitely wrong.
" Your friends are unable to respond at the moment," a voice behind him told him. He spun around and a hand grabbed him by the throat instantly. His eyes met ones that glowed a bright red hue, accompanied by lips smirking with long incisors overlapping them.
" What…the…?" he started, but a tight squeeze on his throat silenced him.
" My sire thanks you boy," the strange man with short brown hair told him quietly. " You saved us the time for having to coaxed the Verus Sanguis out of hiding. You saved us a quite a bit of time. Let me repay you." He lowered him and pulled him close, immediately sinking his teeth into his neck.

Duo froze in his tracks, eyes wide and bags almost dropping from his hands. He felt it, the strange tingle in the back of his mind that warned him when one of Them was close by. He looked around, but the sighed. His sense also told him that It wasn't that close.
" Duo? Are you all right?" Quatre asked him.
" Wha? Oh yeah, just remembered that I need to look for a new pair of boots," he replied quickly. " I almost forgot."
" Really?" Wufei asked from behind him, not fully ready to buy the answer.
" Yep, c'mon, I know there's a shoe place around here somewhere," he pushed a head, not letting them or the other two see the apprehension in his eyes. He knew It was in the city and not too far from the mall they were in, but he couldn't leave his friends to go after it. He just had to hope It didn't realize where he was first. He couldn't risk his friends like that. Even so he couldn't rid himself of the bad feeling he had, something was going to happen. Man, I thought I was free from things like this for a while, he thought sadly, though he knew he would never be truly free.
A/N: See? Rowen's with Anubis and we don't care who doesn't like it. We happen to like the pairing a lot. If he was alive in the canon We'd use it more often.
JC: Okay, now everything is really getting there. Chapter 3 is done save editing here and there. But it will come out in a few days.
Kathrine: And just WAIT until you see who we put Duo with in here. (Smirks mischievously) And we don't really care if people don't like that pairing either.
JC: Review please, tell us what ya think. ^_^
