Part 3: Close Encounters

"Earth to Amara, hello?? Are you there??"

"Huh?" Amara said drowsily. She heard a pestering female voice nearby, consciously bringing her back to reality.

"Amara!"

"Yes Marina. What is it?" Amara asked hoarsely. She slowly rose from her deep slumber. She jolted in surprise. She was the driver of a sleek, expensive sports car. A riveting Porshe model that she remembered seeing in a catalog before. It was exclusively designed for unique styling and superior performance.

"Marina, who's she?" The black girl chuckled beside her. She was very pretty, slim and petite girl. "What planet did you came from? It's only me, Aisha. Don't you dare fall asleep on me!" She wagged a finger. "We've got a race to win."

"A race?" Amara repeated. She raised her eyebrows quizzically at her.

"Oh boy," Aisha groaned. "Haven't you been paying attention? Our reputation is at stake here so we ain't gonna be looking like fools in front of these guys." She indicated to a group of street thugs in attendance. They too brought their cars with them. All of them lined up for the big race.

Amara shook her head in disbelief. "This is a drag race!" She said in complete amazement. "Are you insane? This is illegal!" She said sternly.

"Are you feeling okay? You didn't hit your head too hard?!" Aisha said sarcastically.

"I compete professionally. Not some amateur." Amara stated, matter-of-factly.

"Sure, whatever." Aisha said indifferently. She just shrugged her shoulders.

A light tap on the window brought Amara's attention. She could visibly see a man's face peering closely to the dark shaded window. With a simple push of a button, the window automatically lowered. The light from the sun brightened the car inside.

The man whistled. "Nice," He commented. He was clearly impressed with the car's interior. It had the latest top-notch devices equipped and decked in leather. "You're riding in style, Amara!"

"Hiya Billy! How's it going?" Aisha greeted him enthusiastically.

"Hey Aisha! Did you guys bring the stuff I asked you too??" He questioned.

"It's all right here, baby" Aisha said reassuringly. She patted the sides of her pockets. "Come on, Amara. Let's go." She jerked her heads sideways, gesturing to follow her outside.

Amara nodded curtly. She grabbed the keys and placed them inside her pockets securely. She got out of the car and closed the door behind her.

//Why did you drag me into this Marina???//

She leaned her back against the car with her arms crossed over her chest. She regarded Aisha and Billy cautiously. They were not to be trusted whatever their motives were.

Aisha took out a wad of $10,000 bills from her pocket. They were freshly printed American dollars.

Billy removed his sunglasses and placed it inside his shirt pocket. He looked like a supermodel from pages of fashion magazines. He was devastatingly good looking and athletic built. He had a dark hair and penetrating green eyes.

She handed the money to him and he inspected it carefully. "Good stuff." He said at last. He passed over a wad of bills to her and she did the same.

"We're all cool here?" He asked.

"Loud and clear." Aisha said. "Don't know about Miss Grouchy over there?" She pointed over to Amara.

"She's ready. I'll make sure she is." Billy said grinning, approaching Amara carefully.

"Hey, baby girl." He said. His face was few inches away from her, tilting his head closer for a passionate kiss...

"Don't come any closer." Amara said warningly. She was deadly serious.

"You're injured... Just say the word and we'll blow this joint." He whispered into her ear. "You still haven't recovered from the accident. Do you still want to do this?"

"I don't run away so easily from a challenge." Amara said evenly, her eyes glittered. She could feel Aisha's glaring eyes on her, watching her closely... It would be a shame to see that money go to waste.

"I'll race you on," Amara said confidently.

"Good," Billy said, nodding his head approvingly. He brazenly licked his tongue inside her ear. The sensual feeling... Amara shuddered at his touch. It took a will power to push him aside.

"Don't do dare lay a hand on me, the next time. You might not even make it alive." She threatened him.

Billy laughed. "I like my girls to be pushy. I'll see you at the end of the race, Amara. Good luck!" With a final wave, he disappeared into the crowd.

Amara fumed.

After lunch, Duo and Hilde went straight back to work. They were in the junkyard, salvaging any materials to sell. Any means of survival. For the first time in his life, Duo couldn't helped but wonder about his future. All of his life, he endured pain and suffering in the ravaged war. He too lost his beloved family once. He fought back, strengthening his faith and belief.

His life had been too easy and comfortable. It would be unfair to Hilde who had been excessively worrying. She owed him a lot and he made sure he kept that promise. She deserved more. A better life for her future. She gambled too much in the war.

"Hey Duo." Hilde said suddenly. "Can you hear that noise??"

"What noise?" Duo asked curiously.

"Hush... Be quiet..." Hilde silenced him, placing a finger next to her lips. The loud noise was coming from outside. The rock music, people screaming and engine roaring. Duo's face ashen.

"Shit," Duo swore. "They're back."

"Who??" Hilde asked. "Duo, where are you going?" She demanded. She watched him leave.

"Stay right here, Hilde. Don't go anywhere." Duo advised her. "If anything happens, don't hesitate to call for the police." He unzipped his black jacket and checked inside. He had a spare gun tucked discreetly inside.

"Duo, please don't do anything foolish!!" Hilde cautioned him.

"I'm watching my back!" Duo said. "Time to crash the party." He had an evil smirk.

Aisha was giving Amara a final pep talk. "You can do it girl. Go make Mama proud!" She lightly slapped Amara's shoulder.

"The guy I was talking too. Is he a boyfriend of mine?" Amara asked casually.

"Oh Amara. You're non-believable." Aisha shook her head. "Yes, he is. You guys have been pretty tight for a very long while now."

"The guy is an idiot." Amara said disgustedly.

"You complain too much." Aisha said exaggeratedly. "He IS a nice boy. You'll never find a guy like him. I'd better go now. Don't want to keep company waiting." She patted Amara's head and blew her a kiss for luck. She waddled back in the sidelines.

Aisha was a damned flirt. Amara thought with amused look on her face. She hinted that Aisha had a major crush on Billy. She couldn't care less for Billy. She didn't have the time for love right now. Love was a complicated matter.

She turned on the ignition and the engine roused to life. She inhaled deeply. She could almost smell the sweet success of victory. It was all hers.

A car approached from behind her. It belonged to Billy. A green Jaguar. She completely ignored his constant honking. A sleazy, girl in a hot pink bikini strolled between the cars. She carried a white checkered flag and waved the flag as a signal to start.

The race began...

Duo climbed down the iron fence. He was not a happy camper. He had been involved many times in a brawl with these street thugs. The same issue as always. Soliciting and trespassing in a private property against the law. Illegal activities like street drag racing. Worst of all, the rich snooty hot shots were in it. They had no life but as useless wastrels.

"Damned those bastards," Duo muttered angrily. He clenched his fist. He stood behind the iron gates and waited...

As always, Amara was in the lead. Even if she was blindfolded, she could easily win this race. After wining so many awards, she became a pro. Winning those money prizes or trophies meant nothing to her. She sought after the speed and excitement. Strangely enough, it gave her comfort.

She looked over her rear view mirror. Billy was behind her and gaining speed.

//Catch me if you can//

Billy's car suddenly honked her. Amara's snapped out her daydream. Far ahead, she saw Duo blocking her path. He stood there defiantly. If he didn't move, he might die from a car crash.

//This guy is crazy. He's going to get killed//

She gripped tightly on her stirring wheel and stepped hard on the brake. She was trying to maneuver the car. The Porshe swirled out of control. Her car crashed...

"Amara, Amara!!" She heard Billy's frantic voice. He was viciously kicking the car door.

"I....I'm fine Billy." Amara answered.

"You're okay." Billy's voice sounded relieved. The next words that came out from his mouth, he started cursing. He wasn't alone. He was fighting with another guy. Amara slithered out of the car.

"Billy!! Stop!!" Amara was horrified to see Duo and Billy pointing guns at each other. "There's no need to go this far." Amara was trying to amend her fault.

"Get your stinking sorry asses off my property!!" Duo warned them. "How'd you like to spend the day behind bars? Now isn't that appealing??"

Out of nowhere, the sirens of police cars came. "Let's get outta here!" Billy said. He grabbed Amara's arm and dragged her across to his car parked by the fire hydrant. Amara looked back and Duo glowered at her...

To be continued...
