Riem stares up at the stars outside of his tiny cottage, enjoying his final night at home, trying to memorize every single point in the sky all over again, knowing that this is something that he can take with him no matter where he goes. He removes one of his newly made talismans from a pouch at his side, staring at the figure of a Phoenix, turning it over in his hands, revealing an I Ching on the other side. He would be bring to this land yet, or leave it altogether. Within a week, he will be able to finish his gate.

The sound of footsteps echo behind him, but he doesn't begin to get up quite yet, knowing exactly who those footsteps belonged to. "Good evening Aine."

Aine leans over, her emerald eyes staring into his, a smile on her beautiful lips. "How did you know it was me?"

"I'd know you anywhere Aine." Riem jumps up and turns to face her.

Aine catches sight of the medallion in Riem's hand. "Is that part of your gate experiment?"

Riem nods. "Yes, in fact, it just so happens that this is the master key. I hope never to have to lock the gate, but if I do…"

"I see. So you're leaving tomorrow?"

"Yes. I will miss everyone here greatly."

Aine pauses for a moment, the smile on her face broadening. "Well actually, that was what I came here to talk to you about. Iain and I have been talking and we've decided to come with you."

Riem stares at her dumbfounded. "Are you sure Aine? It isn't going to easy."

"You can't save the world by yourself Riem, you have to trust in those around you."

Riem nods, an impish grin crossing his face. He reaches out and pulls Aine into his arms, clasping her to his body. "You know, I think that is why I love you Aine, always looking out for everyone," he whispers softly. He watches Aine's eyes close, her breath falling softly onto his face. He closes the gap between them, pressing his lips gently against hers. Aine's arms wrap around his neck, her slim fingers wrapping around his hair.

The kiss leaves them both breathless after they break it, but they stay together, locked in each other's arms each taking comfort in the other's presence. Riem trails butterfly kisses down her neck, up to her ear, and across her jaw before finding her mouth again, taking her in another breathless kiss. Fire courses through his body, heat flowing through his veins. Even now, after so long, he is still surprised at the intense feelings the small human woman stirred in him.

When he finally finds his way back to the cottage, it is early morning, just before sunrise. As he collapses into bed, he fails to notice the absence of a certain dark talisman.
