Chapter two: Selene meets Aries

Usagi walked the dark streets of L1, looking at everyone that crossed her path. She wasn't sure how she was going to find the pilot for Wing Gundam, 01, but she knew that she only had one week. She had a single black leather bag slung over one shoulder with enough clothes to last the week. She also had a small 9 mm semi automatic and five magazines, just in case she ran into any trouble.

After an hour of walking the streets she decided to go through the back streets, since she wasn't being successful at all on the streets, and the sun was scorching hot, at least in the back streets there was shade. After an hour she found that it had been a mistake. She met two drunken fools that were sitting on the floor. They apparently wanted to have 'some fun' with Usagi as they said.

Usagi wasn't stupid. She knew what they had in mind and she was disgusted and angered. They tried to get her, but her five years of training paid off. Since they were drunk, it was easy to take them out. She knocked one out, and then kicked the second one in the stomach causing him to stumble back. Then the drunken fool puked all over the ground.

The guy got up after a while and prepared to attack her again, but a man suddenly came out of no where and knocked him out with a swift punch to the head. The man turned to face her and she saw that he was handsome. He had blonde hair and brown eyes. He was slim and fit, and by the way he moved Usagi knew that he was a professional. She knew that he had done this before.

"Are you okay little girl?" he asked Usagi and he stepped toward her. She took an automatic step backwards. She wasn't about to trust this man just because he had 'saved' her. She had been doing just fine without his help. "It's okay, I won't hurt you. Don't be afraid."

"I'm not afraid," she stated in monotone, her eyes unreadable. She looked at him fearlessly, daring him to say otherwise.

The man smiled at her. "No, you sure don't look scared." He chuckled. "Where are your parents?" Usagi shook her head. "You don't have any parents?" Again she shook her head. "Well, what's your name?"

"Selene," she stated. The name was of the moon goddess. She wasn't going to give her read name to this man, and especially not her code name. (AN: From here on I'm going to refer to her as Selene since that's the name she's using for the time being.)

"Hm, pretty name. So, you have no place to stay?" She shook her head. "Well, would you like to stay with me?" Selene gave him an incredulous look as if to say, 'Are you serious?'

The man laughed at the look she gave him. "Well, you don't have anywhere else to go, or a place to sleep. I'm not going to hurt you in anyway. Plus, when was the last time you ate?"

Selene looked at the man before her and contemplated her options. She was here for a week, with no money, no food, and nothing to do besides look for a pilot for Wing Gundam. Now here was this man. He seemed harmless, towards her at least, and he was offering a place to stay and food. She guessed that she would stay with him for now because she didn't have any other choice.

"Okay," she said. She looked at him as if telling him to lead the way, and she would follow.

The man nodded. "Okay then," he turned to walk out of the alley then turned back. "Oh, by the way, my name is Odin Lowe."

***************

Selene followed him to a shabby hotel. It looked abandoned and half the roof was missing by what she could tell. It looked like it was hit during an Alliance attack or something. Selene looked at Odin Lowe to see if this was where he lived, and he nodded to her silent question.

'Figures,' Selene thought to herself. She nodded and followed him inside. He went into one room, and she went into another one, exploring and looking to see in what condition the place was in. She quickly accessed the place, looking for any ways to escape should she need to leave quickly.

Selene suddenly felt the barrel of a gun pressed against the back of her head. She froze and cursed herself for not hearing that some one was behind her. She figured that the person was very good if he had snuck up on her without her hearing them.

"Who are you?" asked a low voice behind her. It sounded young and she figured that it wasn't Odin Lowe, but someone else.

"Selene," she answered, not wanting to get killed just yet. Then she quickly turned, grabbed the arm that held the gun, twisted the hand painfully and disarmed the person.

The gun, now in her hand, was aimed at the head of a boy about her age. He was the same height as she, and he had unkempt chocolate brown hair that fell over lifeless beryl-like eyes. (AN: I'll give you one guess on who that is. ^.~) "Now, what's your name?" she asked in her ever familiar monotone as she aimed the gun at his head.

The boy didn't even flinch. "I don't have one," he said plainly. His eyes were cold, but Selene could still see at least some type of emotion in them, although not much.

"Then who are you, and what are you doing here?" she demanded of him impatiently.

"I live here with Odin Lowe," he said calmly. He glanced behind him as he heard footsteps coming their way, but he kept his Prussian blue eyes trained on her.

"Are you in here? I have someone I want you to..." Odin stopped as he entered the room, seeing the gun in Selene's hand aimed at the boy. "What's going on?" he demanded.

"He pointed the gun at me," Selene said as she threw the small gun back to the boy, who caught it in one deft movement. "I don't like it when people point guns at me."

"Did you actually disarm him?" Odin asked in shock. Selene cocked her head to the side. She didn't know why that came as a shock to him.

"Why is that so surprising?" she asked of him, an innocent look on her face. Then she realized it, and her face became the impassive mask again. She looked to see if the boy had seen the look. She saw as he lifted an eye brow toward her and she knew that he had seen. She looked away and looked back at Odin. "You didn't tell me you lived with a trigger happy boy," she said, not caring if she insulted him.

"I was going to tell you right now before you wandered off, but now that you've met him I guess there's no need to introduce you two."

"I didn't wander off; I was scoping the place out. I don't want to be stuck in here with no way out if we're attacked," she said. "Besides, he said he doesn't have a name, so I don't really know him."

Odin looked at the girl in surprise. This little girl talked like a soldier. She was cold, calculating, and knew how to disarm someone. She had even managed to disarm the boy! He knew that the boy also noticed that this girl wasn't normal.

"Well, he didn't have a name when I found him. He doesn't remember." Selene looked at the boy and he gave a curt nod to indicate that it was the truth.

"You need a name, or how am I going to call you when I need you?" The boy looked at her with a confused look. "Let's see, you have a gun and obviously have been trained in the art of war. What can I call you?" The girl had a thoughtful expression on her face. Odin saw the boys' eyes soften a little when he looked at Selene. He smiled, and knew that there was hope for him yet. Suddenly the girl's face brightened with a smile. It was the first time Odin had seen her smile, and he had to admit that she looked beautiful. The boy was thinking along the same lines.

"I got it!" Selene said cheerfully. "I'll call you Aries!" The boy looked at her in confusion again. "You know, the god of war?" The boy understood and he shrugged to indicate indifference. "Okay, then you'll be Aries."

Aries nodded and then turned to walk back into the room that Odin had come out of. Selene followed close behind him, a small smile on her face. Then she replaced it with her mask again when she saw Odin looking at her with a knowing look. "What?" she asked him. She was annoyed with him for seeing the look on his face, and she was mad at her self for letting the emotion show on her face, and her outburst as well.

"Nothing," he said with an amused look. He saw as her right eye twitched a little in anger before she turned and stomped past Aries. He turned and gave Odin a questioning look, but he just shrugged.

Selene spent the next three days with them. She helped with what she could, not wanting to free load off them. She always gathered wood, and started a fire when dusk neared. Aries and Odin wondered where she had learned to do that. They decided not to question her at the moment. On the third night Selene offered to cook for them, and after much persuading, Odin agreed.

What she prepared was better than what either of them had ever cooked, and they greatly enjoyed the meal. Selene was content to just watch them for a while before she started eating herself. Selene hadn't bothered to look for pilot 01 because she knew that she had already found him.

*********

The next day she dragged Aries into the city, wanting to explore it before she had to go back to her training. She knew that when she went back it would be a long time before she saw the outside world again. Well, at least a place that was populated with so much life and energy.

They went to a park first. Selene was amazed at the beauty of the trees, and of the clear blue sky. It looked so much like earth. Selene stopped her train of thought. When had she seen trees and the clear sky on earth? All she had known since she could remember was the cold impersonal walls of the training rooms, the inside of the Gundam training simulations.

Aries stopped when he felt her falter. "Daijobu ka, Selene?" he asked her in concern. (AN: I know he's OOC, but hey this is before his training with Dr. J. He's not the perfect soldier yet.) Selene smiled at him, and then she nodded with a smile. She took his hand in hers and walked ahead, pulling him along. She didn't see as a faint blush crept into his face, but he shook his head and went back to his emotionless face. He let himself be pulled by the small girl.

She stopped at a bench and sat down. He sat with her. She then looked around and at the people that were walking around the park. Aries sat beside her for a while, and then he turned toward her. "What are you doing?" He wanted to know what she found so entertaining about looking at the people that were walking past.

"I'm looking at them. I'm looking at how they walk. I can tell how a person is by the way they walk." She pointed out a woman that was walking by. "You see that woman with the blue jean pants and red shirt? By the way she's walking I can tell that she's worried about something. Her legs are a little tense, and so is her whole body. She's also afraid that people won't accept her, you can tell by the way she moves out of the way for another person to pass." Aries looked at the woman and tried to see what Selene saw. He had to look really hard, but he finally knew what she was saying.

"See the man with the business suit? By the way he's walking, you can tell that he's terribly uncomfortable in it by the way he holds himself. He also looks like he needs to get somewhere by his hurried stride. He's so occupied with it that he keeps almost bumping into people."

Aries looked again and he saw what she meant. The man walked with an uncomfortable and hurried stride. He was amazed at the way she was able to read people. He wanted to be able to read a person the way she did it.

He concentrated on a young woman that looked to be 18 years of age. She was walking with a relaxed stride, but when he looked closer he saw that she was trying too hard to be relaxed.

Aries leaned close to Selene. "See that woman with the yellow dress? She has a relaxed walk, but if you look closer than you'll see that she trying too hard at being relaxed. It's like she's hiding something, or she knows an important secret that could change a lot of things."

Selene smiled at Aries for the first time since that day that she had given him his name. "That's great Aries! You do learn fast!" She was actually happy for the first time. She didn't remember the last time she had smiled like this with one person. She was usually like this when she and the other four girls were alone, but that's because she had trained with them for five years. She had never associated with the opposite sex before besides the grown male scientists that trained them. She didn't know why, but this boy was different. There was something about him that made him the exception.

Afterwards they went to a high hill in the park, and they watched the sun set. Then they stayed for a while and looked up at the stars. Aries was just content to be around her, and Selene felt the same way. When it got too cold they headed back to the hotel, and then they settled down for bed.

They spent the next two days together in the city; not wanting to be apart from one another. They went to a mall, but Aries got bored there, so she gave in and took him somewhere else. It was an amusement park, and the next day she dragged him off to the zoo to see all the animals. Selene was enjoying herself, but everything had to end sooner or later. The day finally came when she had to leave. She had been with them for six days, but she knew that she had to get going. So, on the night of the sixth day she woke up at 3:30 am, wrote a hasty note to Odin and Aries and she quietly left.

*********

As she left the hotel, a voice stopped her. She didn't even have to turn around to know that it was Aries. She knew he would hear her; she would have been doubtful of her choice of him being the pilot of Wing if he hadn't heard her. Yet she still turned to face her new friend.

He stood in his bare feet, his black spandex shorts, and only a green muscle shirt on. She knew it was chilly, and that was the reason that she wore blue jean high water pants and a simple gray turtle neck sweater over her white t- shirt. She wanted to tell him go back inside, but she knew he wouldn't listen.

"You're leaving?" Aries asked her. It was a rhetorical question, for one look at her bag over her shoulder gave him that answer. For the past few days he had actually completely forgotten that she had said that she'd only stay for a few days. He had even been hoping that she had changed her mind and might stay with them, but from the looks of it, nothing had changed for her.

Selene was slightly uneasy under his gaze for reasons she couldn’t quite understand. There were certain things that made her hesitance to leave him, but whatever they were or might have been, didn’t matter. She knew that she had to return, there was no other way around it. Her mission had been pounded into her mind and body and she mustn‘t falter now due to her own human weakness. With that thought, she let her face melt into its cold façade. “Yes, I have to go back."

"Go back where?" Aries asked as he approached her, but she backed away and held out her hand to stop him. It confused him, seeing the cold look on her face, but her eyes spoke a different thing. He could tell that she was struggling with something that he couldn’t hope to understand. Perhaps he was too young, or perhaps it was a girl thing, but he couldn’t think of what it might be.

"I'm sorry, but I can't tell you. I just want to tell you that a lot of things are going to change for you very soon. Things are going to be different and you're going to have to make a choice. I'll just tell you to follow your feelings." Selene laughed a little at this. "Feelings, the one thing that I myself have trouble with."

"Stay," Aries told her simply. His tone wasn't pleading yet his eyes were. There was no doubt in his mind about her, he didn't want her to leave. He wanted her to be with him always, and never leave his side ever. She was his first friend and he didn’t want to lose that.

"I'm sorry, I can't," Selene said in a quiet whisper, as she tried to keep from crying. "I'm sorry for all the pain I'm going to cause you, but there's no other person that can do it but you." Her eyes shimmered with the tell-tell signs of tears, but she refused to let them fall.

"What are you talking about?" Aries asked, confused by her words. He tried to step toward her again, but she took another step back. It felt like a gap had formed around them suddenly and he wanted to jump across it and hug her; his friend.

"Maybe one day you'll understand, but right now, just let me go," she said, lowering her head toward the ground. Never had he seen her bow her head and he stepped back and gave a nod. In the future he would admit that it was one of the hardest things he had ever had to do. "Goodbye Aries." Then she turned and walked out of his life.

"Goodbye Selene, I promise we'll meet again," said Aries, the boy that would one day become the perfect soldier, Heero Yuy.

*********

Usagi got a hold of a computer and relayed a message to Dr. J. 'I have found the boy to pilot Wing; your Perfect Soldier,' and she signed her code name because Dr. J didn't know who she was and she made sure to make it hard for him to trace her from where he was. Then she sent a picture that she had taken of Aries.

Usagi had taken many pictures with him, but she sent the picture where he was alone, and glaring at the camera. She had bought the camera with some money she had obtained (she didn't tell him how she got it) and she asked Aries if she could take a picture of him. He had refused at first, but she had nagged him over and over until finally, with a glare he had said, 'Okay, take the picture.' He had glared at her and she had taken the picture.

The other pictures were of Aries and her together, smiling; well she was smiling and his face was impassive. There was however, one picture where he was actually smiling. She had an arm draped across his shoulders and a small grin on her face. Aries had a small smile as he glances at her out of the corner of his eyes, those azure orbs softening ever so slightly.

Usagi kept those pictures to her self, making sure that she hid them before she returned to Head Quarters.

*********

Now eight years later, a 15-year old Usagi stopped her mad dash out of her bedroom door as her eyes landed on the frame on her desk. The frame was a golden color, and the picture in the frame is of a seven year old little blonde girl with her shoulder length hair in two pigtails. Her face is smiling and her ocean blue eyes are lit up, and she has her arm draped over a seven year old boy with unruly brown hair and Prussian blue eyes that soften as they look at the girl, his face set in a small smile.

"Aries," Selene whispered with a smile. Then Usagi realized that she was going to be late and with a cry she literally flew out of her room and out her front door and toward her first class.
