The Year Long Contest Chapter 4: Shark Catching
"It's a good thing I didn't take a bath all ready, or else I'd be pretty mad right about now," Matt said for everyone to hear, as he threw some more chum into the sea. Actually, he was kinda mad that he had to do this, but was thankful he wasn't getting any good clothes dirty.
"Hey, um...Breen, can you help me put some of this sun-block on," Wachey asked, not knowing how to say her team mates first name right.
"You can call me Nenagh, no need to be so formal," the frizzy haired girl responded, but helped in applying the substance to her leader's back. Everyone on boat seven were in their bathing suits, with the exception of the girls wearing shorts over theirs.
"Okay, Nenagh. Um...does anyone want some candy? I took some from lunch," the Hispanic girl offered, grabbing some things out of her green denim pockets. Her shorts used to be her pants, but they had removable bottom pieces, so she still had the big pockets.
"I'll take some," the other girl stated, and grabbed a lime flavored candy. Up above, Shane was steering the boat, while the girls just sat by the fishing lines. Just about all of the boats were close together, but not too much so.
"Hm...I'm really beginning to like this," Miroku mumbled, thankful that Sango wasn't on the boat with them.
"Inu Yasha, have you spotted anything yet," Kagome asked, quite bored.
"No, I don't even know what a shark looks like! How am I supposed to find it," the half-demon retorted. Sure, there was a symbol of one on the paper, but that didn't really help him. Maybe he could ask that red-headed demon who was smirking at the shorter demon. Oh wait, that would be cheating.
"Ew, uh, Hiei I don't think you're supposed to eat that," Botan said, shuddering towards the fire demon. Glaring at her and Kurama who was laughing softly, he asked, "What else is this bucket of fish and blood supposed to be for?"
"I don't know, maybe to attract the sharks? That's what they're doing with it," Yusuke answered, gesturing towards those in boats 1 and 7.
Meanwhile, back on the beach, all mascots had been called to a meeting in the lunch hut. What they were presented with were a lot of costumes, as well as poster boards, paint, markers, and glitter.
"Hello everyone, I'm Candis if you do not remember, and I am here to give you your costumes. As mascots, you will have to wear these before and after you have performed in the contests. You'll notice we also have art supplies, and we have them here, because we wish for you to make posters for your team. Now if you'll excuse me, I will leave you to choose a costume, as well as to make posters."
"If you need me, I'll be in the kitchen," the violet-eyed woman finished explaining. With that, she left the team mascots to choose outfits.
"How are we supposed to decide," Kayori asked, looking at all the animal costumes.
"Well, what's the name of your team," Relena asked.
"Cox," the violet-haired girl said honestly.
"Oh, I see, well, I think the rooster would fit you perfectly," the dirty-blonde girl replied, laughing nervously. What a team name.
As for the other members who were left behind, they had a short meeting in each of their huts. Within hut number one, the two Asian boys were discussing issues on the supposed spies from team seven.
"What did you discuss during lunch with that girl," Heero asked first.
"Nothing much," Wufei replied, somewhat bored.
"Nothing much? Wufei, we're trying to find out if she's a spy, give details," the Japanese boy responded.
"What do you expect? Her whole life story? I just barely met her, it's not like she could fall for me in such a short time, and trust me with everything she knows," the Chinese boy retorted in return. Oh the irony in his words.
"Sorry, just thought you were more intuitive than that." Both smiled at one another, but glared immediately afterward. Indeed it was quite boring for everyone in the huts, until they suddenly heard an explosion from the ocean. Running out to the beach, they found it to be boat number three.
"Ryoko!! Look at what you've done," Aeka yelled.
"Hey I didn't do this alone! You destroyed it too," Ryoko shouted right back. They carried both Tenchi and Washu back to the shore. Apparently, they had been fighting for the past five seconds, only for one of their attacks to destroy the engine and cause the boat to explode.
"The Tenchi Lovers team, does not receive any points," Sesshoumaru stated, having had to sit there on a bench, waiting for the boats to arrive. If he could act out of character, he'd admit that his bum hurt, but a proper demon didn't say things like that. Luckily he had Kita there, to sit next to him. Though why she did he didn't know.
"Let me see if anyone is injured," Crystal stated, having heard the explosion all the way from the mansion. She looked over Tenchi who had the most bruises first, and found that was all he had. He just needed an ice pack for the bump on his head though.
"I'm all done here, oh, Rei, are you applying the antibiotic I gave you yesterday," the silver-haired girl asked the sailor scout.
"Uh, yes I am. Thank you for asking," Mars replied, and nodded her head politely as the nurse left to go back to her room. The brown-haired girl just hoped her meatball-head of a leader didn't ruin their chances of winning this game.
Speaking of blondes, a certain Arabian was sitting down in a bit of pain. Rubbing at his back, Trowa asked, "Are you all right, Quatre?"
"Those girls were filled with so much anger and jealousy, and that explosion was the climax of it all. Ooh, my poor heart," the aqua-eyed boy said, sighing in relief that the ordeal was over.
"Well, at least now we have less competition," Duo stated, thinking positive. He then looked towards the remaining boats and said to himself, "Lets just hope we find a shark first before everyone else."
"Hey, I got something," Shane shouted slightly, gripping onto the fishing pole that was losing a lot of line. Whatever he had caught, was big, and pulling him towards the end of the boat. Grabbing onto his waist, Matt tried to help him hold onto his catch, only to be dragged along as well.
"Someone cut the damn line! It's too big," Matt yelled, trying to step back. Grabbing one of the knives, Wachey went towards the edge of the boat, and grabbed onto the *moving* line.
"Don't touch it, you'll get cut," Shane said quickly, but was surprised when the Hispanic girl stopped the line's movement. In fact, she was stunned too. It was then their catch jumped into the air and proved to be nothing but a swordfish.
"Hey, you guys okay," they heard Goku asked, concerned slightly.
"Uh, yeah! We just caught a swordfish, nothing more," Nenagh replied, and watched as they pulled the resisting fish onto the boat. Keeping away, she asked, "What are you going to do with it?"
"Use it as a better bait to get a shark," Matt explained, and helped Shane kill the fish, and then cut it up into parts. Reeling the line back, Wachey wondered how she was able to do what she just did. Was super strength one of her powers? Either way she stepped back, and let the boys throw out the fishing line again, with the new bait.
"Ew, this stuff is so gross! I think I'm going to puke again," Serina stated, covering her mouth and nose. Setsuna merely shook her head, and said, "Just step away from the chum Princess, and please stop looking at the waves."
"I will, give me a sec--AAAHH," the blonde girl screamed, as she spotted a shark's fin. This of course caught the attention of everybody, including the other boats, and they started to cheer as the shark moved away from their boat, and towards the others.
"I think it's heading towards our bait! Hm, I wonder what type of shark it is," the hazel-eyed girl exclaimed. However, it didn't head straight to the bait, instead it just swam around, seeing what was going on with the boats. And then a few other sharks appeared. All of which were hungry.
"Man, those things are big," Inu Yasha muttered, going down to the lower deck. Removing his jacket, he stated, "Kagome, I'm going to go in and catch it. It'll be a whole lot faster than just waiting for it."
"What?! No, you'll get hurt," the girl ordered. Ignoring her, he jumped into the water, and immediately attracted not only one, but two! /Oh great, / was his last thought as one swam in for a bite. He only needed one, so the first to attack was the first one he grabbed, and with that, he jumped out of the water, still holding onto it.
"Maybe we should take his cue and do that," Shane said calmly, giving props for his enemies bravery.
"Are you crazy!? There is no way in hell I'd do that," Matt practically shouted. Shaking his head, the other male there just sat and again waited for a shark to bite their bait. He was lucky he didn't have to wait for long, for the bait was tasty.
"Okay, I got one," he then proclaimed, and with the help of Wachey, they got it onto the boat. Everyone, except boat six, got a shark, and soon headed back to the beach. As they were, the Hispanic girl said excitedly, "We got a tiger shark! Though I would've preferred a great white..."
"Do you like sharks or something," Nenagh asked. Nodding, the other girl just kept beaming out of joy. On the shore, she stated, "I guess we all got a tiger shark. The tiger shark, one of the top three man-eaters out of all sharks!"
"Excuse me, man-eater? This eats humans," Yusuke asked, but understood how it could happen. The sharks were pretty big.
"Yeah, the tiger shark, great white, and bull shark are the only ones who really eat men. Only tiger sharks and bull sharks purprosely eat humans though. With great whites it's usually a case of mistaking a human for a seal," Wachey explained. Either way everyone got a picture taken of them with their shark.
"To the score keepers of team 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7, please add fifteen points to your score sheets," Sesshoumaru ordered, thankful he could get up at last. Of course he didn't show his relief to anyone, and merely followed Kita back to the mansion.
Lifting up the mouth of their shark, the leader of team seven removed some of the sharks bigger teeth. She received a few stares, and merely said, "To make a necklace."
"That girl is weird," the spirit detective said again, his friends nodding. Of course to any normal fishermen, this would be normal, in fact, they'd take the whole jaw. Heading towards their huts, each of them had to have another meeting with their representatives.
"This meeting is going to be short. I am just here to introduce your mascot. Please welcome, Kayori, the Cox Rooster," Kikyo said, enthusiasm completely absent from her voice. Walking in the room, embarrassed for a first, the purple haired girl appeared in a rooster costume, and said, "Uh...cockle doodle doo?"
The group was just stunned into silence. They weren't the only ones who were silenced, for Relena surprised her group by appearing in a SD version of Deathsycthe.
"I would've chosen Wing Zero, but they didn't have it. I'm sorry Heero," she said under the head part. Blinking in surprise to say the least, the Japanese pilot responded with, "That's okay Relena. I'm perfectly fine with you not being Wing."
"Wow Krillan, you're head got bigger," Goku said laughing happily.
"Uh, it's not really my head Goku. Just part of the mascot costume I chose," the bald headed man replied, happy to make his friend laugh. Laughter, a happy thing. Unless you're being laughed at, which is exactly what Koenma was getting in his purple monster costume.
"That is such a funny ass...damn Koenma," Yusuke said laughing. Indeed, not even Hiei could supress a smirk. At dinner, most of the team members kept asking how the game went.
"You mean he actually dived in and grabbed one," Sango asked, not believing what she had heard. Kagome merely nodded, and replied, "I was so worried he'd get hurt! But he didn't listen to me!"
At another table, the gundam pilots were discussing a few things. Mainly some of the girls in team seven.
"Do you really believe their spies, because I have a feeling they're not," Quatre admitted, drinking his tea. The Japanese boy sighed, and stated, "I don't really know, but like Une says, better safe than sorry."
"I agree, besides, that Freya girl is a little more than suspicious," Duo added.
"Hmph, why aren't you saying that about the girl you share a room with? Is it because she takes a slight interest in you," Wufei said, smirking. He received a playful glare in response, but didn't really care. What was more important to him at the moment was his food.
"Are you really going to make a necklace out of that," the girl who the braded boy suspected asked Wachey. Nodding, the Hispanic girl explained, "I figure it'll have spiritual meaning to it. That and I'd like to show my bro that I'm not such a pussy after all. Sorry for the language."
"That's okay," the other girls chorused, then stared at one another a little surprised. They had ordered two large pizzas for dinner, and were now sitting booth to booth in order to chat with each other. In the end, everyone had an all right time, and had no trouble sleeping. Though secretly the jellyfish population grew a bit higher that night.

Hm, wonder what I'm going to have them do next? The next chapter may take me a bit, or maybe not. Depends. Well, I'm off to write it now! Wish me luck!
