On an interstate towards Washington DC; Tuesday, 10.37 am

My radio was blaring as I sped down the interstate toward Washington and HQ. I sang loudly and probably off-key along to the music as my cell phone rang. I hardly heard it, but considering whom, most likely, was calling, it was no big loss.

"Maxwell here."

"002, where the hell are you?! You were supposed to be here one and a half hour ago!" The angry voice of my boss pierced my ear and I stifled an urge to hold the phone as far away from my sensitive hearing-organs as possible.

"Heh, sorry boss. I'm on my way. And by the way Wu-man, you'd better calm down before you suffer a heart-attack or something!" I quickly hung up before he could start his ranting about how his name wasn't Wu-man, but Wufei and that I was a disgrace for the Service and yadda, yadda and so forth and so on… Was it my fault that I had forgotten to set my clock? Ok, ok, I know it was my fault but I was up late yesterday visiting a new club. A great club by the way, you really should take the time visiting it some day.

Secret Service HQ, Washington DC; Tuesday, 11.08 am

I let my car come to a screeching halt outside HQ (that's right, I work for the Secret Service of the UESA. And I, even if my boss doesn't want to admit it, are our best agent) and danced in with my braid swinging behind me. It was a beautiful day after all.

"Hi dolls, whazz up?" I chirped as I kissed Hilde and Relena, the secretaries, on their cheeks and winked.

"Hello Duo. Well, firstly you should have been here almost two hours ago, and secondly, Wufei has almost gone through the roof because of your tardiness." Hilde smiled at me but tried to look serious.

"And something really important has come up; you're expected at the boss's office right away." Relena said before going back to her computer screen. Sheesh, does anything make that girl smile on the job? I knew it was serious the moment I was in through the door; Wufei didn't start his usual tirade about me being late or anything at all, and Lady Une was there. She is the chief (my dear boss is chief right under her) for the Service, and seldom comes down to us mortal people if it isn't a real catastrophe. And mind you, I'm not talking about those standards-the-world-is-in-danger-catastrophes, those I deal with regularly. That's what I'm for after all. No, if Lady Une's here we're talking big time. I threw myself down in the stuffed chair in front of Wufei's desk and waited for the doom.

"You're late, Maxwell." Wufei hardly gave me a look.

"I know sir, sorry. So what's up?"

"Well, Maxwell, did you hear the news this morning?" Une's voice was crisp and precise, no no-nonsense here.

"Yes, those about finding the leader of Oz murdered in his villa with his lover's knife through his back?" Oz had two sides; the all-legal, billions-worth Winner corp., and the shady, criminal dealing Kushrenada side. And now Treize Kushrenada had been found with a knife in his back with his lover, Heero Yuy's fingerprints, all over it.

"That's it. And I think we all can agree that he did it on purpose, he's after all way too good to let something like fingerprints expose him if he did not want us to know that it was he who did it." I nodded; yes he was too professional to do that. After all he'd been our best agent before he met with Kushrenada and sided with him. I know that, `cause we trained together and he was always better that me. Not by much, but better. And now he was in control of the biggest criminal organization there was on the Earth and the Colonies. And it was me who was expected to take care of it.

"Sadly you're not the most inconspicuous agent we have, but at any rate our best, and that's why you're given this mission." Wufei really do know how to pop one's bubble in self-esteem, humph, not inconspicuous enough, huh? I can be invisible when I want and need to.

"What is it I'm supposed to do, then? Just waltz in there and assassinate Yuy or what?" I felt truly nauseated by that thought, kill a friend? Well, he will most likely do that to me if I get in his way; he always had a single-minded track when it comes to complete a mission. But I ain't him.

"It would be preferable if you could accomplish something like that, but that's not what you're supposed to do. Your mission is to uncover the plan we know he's working on, and to stop it." Une stared hard at me, eyes boring into my skull. "But if you get the chance, you are to kill Yuy, understood?" I sighed.

"Hai, ninmu ryoukai."

Great, just fucking great! I slammed shut the door to my black Mustang and frustrated hit the wheel with my hands, this was not something I was going to enjoy. A shadow fell over me, but I knew without looking up who was standing there. "What do you want Hilde, I'm not in the mood right now." She leaned down, crossing her arms on the door and just looked at me.

"I know you're not interested in me, but what about dinner tonight, to cheer you up? I know you liked Heero a lot before and hoped he was still on our side." I smiled at Hilde; she did know what to say, and when. But she was a little wrong; I still loved him and that would be a liability, but I couldn't help it. Who're you to tell your heart to stop loving someone? "Thanks Hild, but I have to start working on this right now. Won't have time for dinner. Maybe after I come back, ok sweetheart?"

"Right, and I'll hold you to that promise Duo Maxwell!" She waved and disappeared back in. I smiled brightly at her and waved back, she never failed to get my spirits up.

Outside a casino, San Francisco; Tuesday, 07.46 pm

I had picked up a tail on my way to my meeting with 006. The shadow had followed me all the way from the door of my hotel to this fancy casino. 006, or Zechs Merquise as his name was, were undercover as a bartender and had worked a long time on supplying us with insider info about Oz. I went inside and took a stool.

"Anything to drink, sir?" Zechs icy blue eyes twinkled at me where he stood behind the bar. Apparently my tail had lost me, or I it, depending on how you saw it. Which could be both good and bad.

"Yes, a Martini, shaken, not stirred." Actually that was a kind of joke; I didn't really like that particular drink. But ever since an assignment when that was a password I had kept it for fun. With my drink I got a napkin, standard at this casino, but the message written on it was not; we talk at my place later, 006.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?" I turned my head and was momentarily struck speechless by the vision beside me. Anyone would, even if they liked guys like I did. A stunning Chinese woman with her flaming red hair in two buns on her head, deep, deer-like brown eyes and smooth caramel colored skin. An armless, probably satin Chinese dress in a deep jade color with a dragon sewn in silver thread across it topped it all. A goddess, simply put. I beamed at her and shook my head: "No, it isn't, Miss. Go ahead; I would certainly not have any misgivings about having such a beautiful lady beside me." No one, but those who know me, would have noticed that I didn't answer with my usual swiftness. She smiled and blushed a little; I would yet have to be beaten when it came to charming women.

"My name is Meiran, what's yours?" She asked in a very lovely, husky tenor.

"Maxwell. Duo Maxwell."

I spent the night with her, mostly because there was something familiar about the alluring Chinese woman, but I couldn't put my finger on it. When 006 tapped me on my shoulder I excused myself and whished her good night.

At Zechs Merquise's hotel room; Tuesday, 11.56 pm

Zechs closed the door behind us and gestured for me to sit down. I chose to remain standing in the corner beside a window.

"Ever careful, eh, 002? Anything to drink?" He chuckled at me and went over to his mini-bar.

"That's how I keep alive Zechs, and no thanks, I got enough earlier this evening." I shrugged and the pale blond sat down in an armchair beside the table. "So, gotten any useful, blondie?"

"Argh, you know I don't like that pet name, Duo." I just smirked at that. "Of course I have, and this is huge, Maxwell." He was totally serious now, and the grim voice told me that this wasn't something to be laughing over. Not that that had ever stopped me before, I could at least smile, if not laugh, at everything. I arched my eyebrows to get him to continue. He nodded.

"This is how it is, 002. Seems like ever since the younger Winner took over the business from his father, the rift between the two fractions of Oz just got bigger and bigger. Apparently he and Kushrenada didn't have the same ideas on how things should be run, that was three years ago, and Yuy had been Kushrenada's lover two years already when this started to happen. As I understand it, Winner and Yuy got together and started to plan the downfall of Treize Kushrenada. I'm sorry to make you disappointed of Yuy, Duo, but it seems like he had his eyes on the chief post of Oz from the beginning."

I was actually a little shocked by that. Ok, I knew he had sided with Kushrenada as his lover and all that. But that he had planned almost from the beginning to take over Oz? Had he even meant anything of all the things he'd said and done while in the Service's employment? Or had it been a way of obtaining certain abilities? And had he in that case even meant… No, no idea to think about that, you have a job to do after all. "So, that's all?" I was disgusted at how weak my voice sounded. It was one thing that I got affected by that confession, but another that it showed through, it was a personal matter after all.

"Yes, I-uuugghhh!" the sharp crack of broken glass echoed through the room and Zechs slumped over in the armchair, while blood started to flow from a hole in his temple. I quickly got out my gun and looked out the window. No one. Wait, there, down at the opposite side of the street. The door opened and a maid peeked in, she gasped and stared shocked at the scene. And I'm sure we made quiet the picture; me standing at the broken window brandishing my gun, Zechs slumped over in his chair and blood on the side of his face and body.

"Call the police!" I screamed at her and jumped out of the window. I know it was a stupid thing to do, but else the killer would get away, and thankfully we had only been on the second floor. The killer had gotten into a car and was speeding away. I wouldn't let him/her get away from me and my revenge. No one kills my friends and gets away with it. I'm Shinigami after all.

Highway out of San Francisco; Wednesday, 12.23 am

I took the curve at neck-break speed, fished up my cell phone and pressed 1 and the phone button. Thank God for speed-dials.

"Wufei here."

"Wufei, someone killed Zechs and I'm chasing that person now! He had almost come down to what it was Yuy and Winner was planning as he got shot. That person knew I was there and that Zechs was our man!" I screamed, all in one go, and almost made poor Wuffie deaf as a result.

"What!? I'll send some people down, 002. What do you mean with; `Yuy and Winner was planning'? Oz has always been two more or less warring factions, that was what made them easier to keep under control." He sounded awfully calm, not like me. I took a breath to calm myself down.

"Seems like Winner and Yuy got really well on together and decided to overthrow Treize and put Yuy in his place." Thanks to Wufei's calm I could put myself together enough to not scream at him.

"I see… Just be careful 002, don't kill yourself in a car accident trying to capture 006's killer, you have a mission and it's not to get yourself killed." I didn't answer that, just broke the connection and floored the gas.

I had chased the other car so that we were in the outskirts of San Fran when I lost the killer. "Impossible!" I grumbled angrily. I'd had him in front of me all the time and there was no way he could have gotten away. Suddenly he got up beside me; somehow he had managed to get behind me and had now driven up beside me. Now followed a furious, trying-to-push-the-other-off-the-road chase. For the umpteenth time I swerved away from the dark-red Corvette, but this time I really should have stayed on target; the road made a curve right in front of me and I had no possibility of making it in time. I braked as hard as I dared and jumped out, landing hard on the asphalt and rolling a few times. I came up just in time to see my baby speed right forward as the street curved and crash into the cliffs down below. The red Corvette made the curve perfectly and disappeared. I stared, almost shaking with rage and gave in to something I never thought I would say; "INJUSTICE!!!!"

On a shuttle towards Los Angeles; Wednesday, 01.16 pm

That car had been the only thing I had really loved (of my things that is, and by an exception of my leather jacket of course) and now I had driven it to its death. I glared dully at the seat in front of me and planned painful and bloody death to the murderer of Zechs and my lovely Mustang. I was on a shuttle to Los Angeles where Heero was said to have his hideout. `Course, he had more than one, but this, disguised as a casino, was the major one, and it was most likely that he was there than anywhere else.
