Chapter One: Quatre's Past

It was three in the afternoon. Six year old Quatre and his friends ran down to the lake for a swim. He and his friends had been having so much fun, that they didn't notice that they were being watched.

A girl about the age of five watched Quatre from behind a tree. She had golden blond hair and firey blue eyes that sparkled as her face lit up with a smile at Quatre's playful antics.

The boy with the brown hair up in a braid suddenly looked over at the trees and spotted the girl. "Hey!" he yelled, gaining the attention of the other four boys as he pointed, "Who's that?"

The girl knew exactly who the boy was referring to and took off. ~Daddy's not going to like this,~ she thought.

"Hey!" yelled Quatre as he got out of the water and began to chase the girl, "Wait up!"

The girl didn't listen and continued deeper into the woods. ~I hope I lost him,~ she thought, ~I can't let daddy know that I was caught.~ She continued to run until she came to a clearing and then stopped. "I wish that we could all just live in peace," she said as tears began to build up in her eyes, "I'm being foolish. Daddy will have nothing to do with my wishes." She didn't notice that she was being watched and sat down on the ground, crying softly.

Quatre looked at the girl from behind a tree with a sympathetic look on his face. ~Poor girl,~ he thought, ~She doesn't want to fight.~ He slowly walked out from around the tree and began to approach the girl.

The girl looked behind her and her eyes widened when she saw that Quatre was coming towards her. She quickly stood, ready to take off again.

"Wait!" Quatre cried out, "Please don't go! I won't hurt you."

"How do I know that's the truth?" the girl asked boldly.

Quatre seemed surprised by the girl's sudden boldness. "I give you my word," he stated.

The girl let her guard down and smiled. ~Daddy's wrong,~ she thought to herself, ~They're not all bad.~ "What's your name?" she asked, still too cautious to give her name.

"My name is Quatre," Quatre said softly, "What's yours?"

The girl seemed hesitant, but finally answered after a few seconds of silence. "Charity," she answered.

Quatre smiled. "Charity," he repeated, "That's a pretty name."

Charity blushed a bit. "Thanks," she said softly as the wind danced through her hair, "No one's ever said that to me before."

After a few minutes of silence, Quatre decided to ask the question that had been bugging him. "Why were you hiding behind a tree?" he asked.

"I was coming down to the lake to swim," Charity lied, "I saw you and your friends and hid behind the tree. I wasn't supposed to let you see me..."

Quatre seemed confused. "Why not?" he asked.

"I can't tell you," Charity said as she turned her back to Quatre. ~No one must know...,~ she thought to herself.

"Why not?" Quatre pushed further.

Charity turned around to face Quatre. "Because," she began, "You'd hate me if I told you."

Quatre opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off when he heard someone yelling Charity's name.

"Charity!" a man with a deep voice yelled, "It's time for your training!"

"Coming, daddy!" Charity yelled back and then turned her attention back to Quatre. "I have to go now," she said, "I have to go train now."

"Alright," said Quatre in agreement, "We can just meet here tomorrow..." He stopped talking when he noticed the sad smile on Charity's face. "I get it," he said, "You won't be coming back, will you?"

Charity shook her head as tears once again began to make their way down her cheeks. "Please promise me one thing," she said, "Promise me that you and your friends will fight as hard as you can."

"I will," Quatre promised as he felt tears sting his eyes, "Will I ever see you again?"

"Maybe," Charity answered, "We might even be fighting on the same side one day..." With that, she took off down the valley, but looked back and waved.

Quatre continued to wave as Charity slowly disappeared into the setting sun. He sat down and began to cry as he last words played through his head. ~What did she mean?~ he wondered to himself. "I made a promise to her," he said as he wiped his tears away, "Now I'll make one to myself. I will find you again at any cost." After he made his vow, he slowly stood up and walked back down to the lake where his friends were waiting for him.
