Summary: This is a story from Duo's POV. Duo is a Kitco - a race of cat-people that are viewed as 'lesser people' and trouble-makers. Following his Sixth Sense (something all Kitcos possess) he finds himself foiling a kidnapping of a young noble. Little does he know that that was only the beginning, the encounter is going to change his life forever, and lead him in a direction he NEVER expected.

Duo's POV
There were worse things than having a tail and cat ears, I mused as I stared at the waddling merchant like no personality. Not everyone agreed with me, of course. In fact, half of the population of the Alliance thought that the few Kitcos that were left in the world were little better than pests and the other half thought they were dangerous criminals. Hence the reason my tail was tucked uncomfortably down my pant leg and my poor ears were squashed under a black hat. Nope, 'trust' and 'Kitcos' were never in the same sentence unless it were stated as a negative.
It was one of the reasons I was a thief. No one trusted a Kitco to do anything, even if you were mucking out a horse stall people seemed to expect you to make off with the shovel. So getting a decent job when you were a Kitco was almost impossible. Add to that the danger I'd be in if anyone realized what I was and each moment of life became something I greedily clung to.
Normally I was very cautious, never lingering very long in any place, but I'd already been in Thungral a week longer than I'd intended, though I wasn't quite sure why. It seemed like any other city I'd been to, but my Sixth Sense kept telling me that I needed to stay. And the one thing Lady Helen had always told me before she was killed was to trust it whenever it spoke to me because it would never steer me wrong. So that's what I was doing.
I sat on the roof of a tailor's shop, in the shade of the chimney, as I had for an entire week - always at the same time, just after sunrise - and stared down at the Square; waiting. Only I wasn't sure what I was waiting for, the Sense was never specific, but when whatever I was waiting for showed up I would know it. Whether I'd know what to do with it or about it was something else entirely. I sighed as I leaned back against the cool bricks of the chimney and continue to watch the people with only half-interest. Until I felt compelled to move.
I barely gave any thought to the direction I was moving in as I easily raced over the rooftops, silent as a shadow. Kitcos had highly developed senses, incredible night vision, retractable claws, and an unmatched sense of balance among other qualities - not all of which were good. It was the reason moving from house to house along the rooftops was so easy for me.
My destination seemed to be a dark ally, and my ears easily picked up voices even though I was still about ten houses away. From what I could tell it sounded as if a group of men had kidnapped a boy and said boy wasn't playing very nice. The kid was a fighter - something I found myself grinning over, though I doubted his kidnappers shared my amusement.
When I go to the ally, I took a moment to absorb the situation. There were about six men, one of which was holding an arm tightly against his body already. All of them were surrounding a well dressed blond-haired boy about my age. Obviously a Noble-born but not a coddled and spoiled one if the scrapes and bruises all of the men were wearing was anything to go by. I felt myself grin as I freed my tail from my pants and slipped it through a special hole at the seat of my pants. Carelessly I removed my hat, enjoying the wind on my ears briefly before I dropped into the ally, hat tucked into my pocket, landing lightly on my feet inside the circle of men and a few feet in front of the blond.
"Is this a private party or can anyone join in?"
Strangely enough the Noble-born didn't seem to notice my ears or tail, he just seemed worried... about me. There was no concern for himself and no fear of his attackers on his face; none. The same could not be said about the men, though.
"Kitco!" It came out like a hiss from behind me.
I let my claws extend and felt my eyes change to slit-pupils as I turned to look directly at him. Grinning, I made my lips pull back in a snarl so that he had a good view of my slightly elongated canines. "Wow, did you figure that all out on your own? Did it hurt?"
The men seemed torn between fear, anger, and hatred. Fear would cause them to retreat and make my life a great deal easier, but anything easy typically avoided occurring in my life. Seemed it wouldn't be changing today. Instead of fear they opted for hatred, but at least with hatred I knew they would likely forget about the other guy and focus on me.
The first attack came from my left and I danced out of the way, kicking him across the misshapen circle into the man who was holding his arm. The force behind the kick sent them both into the wall, hard. I'd expected the Noble-born to run for it the moment the big bad Kitco distracted his kidnappers; after all, I was just a Kitco... but he didn't run. He didn't just stay frozen in place either - he attacked. One of the men at my back came at me with a knife, intent on killing me. I could have dealt with it easily enough - I was ready to - so I was understandably surprised by the fact that a Noble suddenly put himself between me and a knife. No one, except Lady Helen, had ever done anything like that for me.
But we were still in the middle of a fight, so as soon as I was sure he was capable of holding his own I focused entirely on the men coming at me. One of the men I'd knocked into the wall, had gotten back to his feet but the other was sprawled, unconscious, on the ground. Five more to go.
I ducked a punch and retracted the claws on my right hand as I sent my fist into the man's stomach. Being a Kitco was a death sentence, but being a Kitco who'd killed someone even a bad guy was a death sentence preceded by a great deal of pain. And the man certainly wasn't worth that. With a quick swipe of the claws on my left hand, I cut another man's arm - hitting a nerve as I did that cause his knife to drop from his numbed fingers. Flipping over the man I'd punched, I launched a side-kick at another that audibly broke his nose and had him double over in pain. Dropping low, I swept my right leg out, knocking the feet out from under all three and sending them painfully to the ground. Twisting I brought the back of my elbow down on the shoulder blades of the man I'd punched, driving him into oblivion as I did.
Back on my feet I turned to find the blond standing over the last two - both of which were unconscious. Finding me watching him, he rubbed his neck self-consciously, smiling shyly. "Thanks." I blinked in surprise wondering if I was dreaming when he stuck his hand out to me. "I'm Quatre."
Clasping his hand in dumb-founded shock, I found myself answering his introduction. "Duo."
His smile turned into a large, warm grin that seemed to make me feel like a belonged with him. "Nice to meet you, Duo. I think it's be a good idea for us to go, don't you?"
"Uh, yeah." I pulled my hand back and quickly tucked my tail back down my pant leg before cramming my ears back under my hat. I found myself being dragged towards the mouth of ally. I expected him to release me there, while he headed home but he didn't. He dragged me all the way back to the marketplace, and I felt a brief flash of fear at the idea that he might be taking me to the City Guard but it was only brief because my Sixth Sense twinged. I could trust him and I had to go with him - I knew it. The reason for it eluded me, but if I lived long enough, I would eventually find out.
As we entered the crowded Square no one paid us much attention. With my eyes back to normal and my ears and tail hidden, no one had reason to give me a second glance because I looked like everyone else. Quatre was somehow able to find a pathway through the crowd with no trouble at all, enabling us to avoid any unwanted attention.
He knew exactly where he was going, dragging me straight to the Crown And Thorns - one of the most expensive Inns in Thungral, located on the far edge of the Square - and right into Chaos.
As soon as we had stepped into the Common Room of the Inn, we were surrounded by a roomful of Guards, Knights, Soldiers, and Servants. If it hadn't been for Quatre's tight grip on my wrist I would have been separated from him just by the sheer amount of bodies present. Then the strangest thing happened. The moment Quatre opened his mouth all of the commotion stopped. "Everyone, as you can see, I'm perfectly fine. My good friend, Duo, aided me in returning to the Inn so there is no call for worry. Please go back to your day with my sincerest thanks for all of your help in this misunderstanding. Lord Merquise, Commanders Yuy and Barton, and General Chang, if I could have a word with you upstairs in my room. Lady Sally, if you could see to a fresh set of clothing for my friend Duo and have dinner for all six of us sent to my room please, I would greatly appreciate it. Again, everyone, thank you very much." He beamed at the surrounding people as if each one meant a great deal to him - everyone from stable boys to Lords and Ladies. Then, pulling me after him, he proceeded up the stairs in front of the four he'd... ordered... asked... - it was difficult to say which it had been - to accompany him.
Once all six of us were in his gigantic room, with the door shut and locked behind us he finally let go of me and I did my best to move closer to the window, unnoticed. Not easy considering four sets of eyes were on both Quatre and myself. Quatre's blue eyes were fixed on me in concern. My Sixth Sense told me I was safe, but I couldn't handle being within enclosed spaces for very long and it was a bit of a fight to keep myself from running for the door. Clearing my throat I met Quatre's gaze. "So, you're safe now, right?"
He nodded and smiled. "Yes, the four behind me are my personal Guards as well as trusted Officials and good friends."
I gave the others my attention for the first time and blinked. Quatre was good-looking in a cute, little brother sort of way but the other four were drop dead gorgeous, particularly the long-haired blond and the bronze man with his black hair pulled back into a punishing pony-tail. I gave myself a hard mental slap - not going to happen. Oh they might fuck me because of the naughty, exotic factor but that would be as far as it went. "Okay, so what happens now?"
Quatre frowned, though it was sort of endearing in a strange way. Damn if I wasn't growing attached to him and I'd only just met him; stupid Sixth Sense. "What do you mean?"
I sighed, shoved my hands into my pockets and rock on my heels. "When does the lynch mob show up to kill me?"
He actually paled at that and the other four exchanged looks that I couldn't hope to understand. Something else was going on here and I wasn't privileged with that knowledge. I really hated it when that happened. I took a closer look at their clothes as Quatre shook his head violently. "If anyone wanted to harm you they would need to go through us first."
Their clothes were foreign, though in subtle ways. "You're not from the Kingdom of Theenon, are you?"
It was the long-haired blond who spoke. His voice almost made me start purring and that would have been incredibly embarrassing. "We're from the Sanq Kingdom. On a mission from the Seer of Mount Magdun."
I tore my eyes from him and back to Quatre. "Who are you?" I knew he'd understand what I meant.
He took a deep breath, but met my stare evenly. "I am Prince Quatre Rababra Winner of the Sckradon Empire, Guardian of Hope."
A Prince... well that explained a few things but I still needed answers so I turned to the long-haired blond and waited, not bothering to repeat the question. He was a smart one - caught on right away as he introduced himself. "Lord Zechs Merquise of the Sanq Kingdom, Guardian of Freedom."
I looked at the young man with the messy brown hair. "Commander Heero Yuy of Ginz Erow, Guardian of Peace."
The guy with green eyes was next. "Commander Trowa Barton of the Clans of the West, Guardian of Life."
That left the pony-tailed hottie. "General Chang Wufei of the Clans of the East, Guardian of Justice."
I wasn't aware of some things, but even I was aware of the six Great Lands of the Alliance. "The Alliance Guardians... interesting and just what brings you to Theenon?" Even as I asked it I was looking closer at them. The Guardians weren't all Human. Sure enough, Barton was an Elf of Sunrise - if I wasn't wrong - and so was Chang - though he had to be an Elf of Twilight because of his slanted eyes and darker skin. Quatre was Human, as was Merquise but Yuy... I sniffed experimentally at the air and felt my eyes widen. He was an Earth Sprite; how I'd missed that I had no idea, but the scent of freshly tilled soil was definitely coming from him.
Quatre cast a quick glance back at the others before squaring his shoulders. "The Sixth Guardian, the Guardian of Truth."
Should have known it'd be something like that. I shrugged slightly as I poked at a book on one of the tables along the wall. "Well, I hope you find him..."
"Well, actually he found us." Something about the way Quatre said it made me look back at them just as my Sixth Sense took a huge corporeal mallet and clubbed me with it; repeatedly.
I blinked, "What... me?!?!" Stupid Sixth Sense; I was seriously beginning to wonder if there was even a single God or Goddess I hadn't pissed off in my previous life - though I strongly doubted it.
