A Web of Worlds: 2
That following Saturday, Trowa and Quatre came to pick me up at 6:15 PM sharp. The movie started at 7:00 PM. I knew it was them instantly, being that shining white limosines don't park in front of MY apartment building every day.
I walked down to the lobby of my building, where the two were waiting for me. Quatre beamed at me, while Trowa nodded at me in acknowledgement. That was all the prompting I needed, so the three of us went outside and got into the car. We arrived at the theater at around 6:30 PM. It was a nice building. Very.... expensive looking. Then again, what should I have expected. Quatre was involved. Of course it was expensive.
"Duo and Heero should be arriving any minute now," Quatre informed me, "They said they'd be here around quarter to seven."
I nodded and gave Quatre a small smile to let him know I was listening.
True to Quatre's words, a few minutes later, the other two pilots entered the room. They looked, well, exactly the same, to be honest. They all did. Am I the only one who changes around here? Physically, anyhow. When they got closer, I could see a more laid back look in Heero that I never thought I'd see in him. Must be Duo's influence. Even Trowa seemed alot.... happier. I can pretty much imagine why.
"Hey guys! Hey! Wufei! Haven't seen you in a long time! Where'd you run off to anyhow? We really should keep in touch! Hey, you let your hair down! It looks good!" Duo exclaimed. 'Leave it to Maxwell to run off at the mouth. He won't even give me enough time to respond! Ah well.' I thought, resigned, and did my best not to twitch in annoyance. I looked away from the hyper Duo and noticed Heero staring at me with his head slightly cocked to the left. I raised an eyebrow at him and stared back at him. He didn't avert his eyes, but I never thought he would. Heero never backs down from anything. I respect him for that.
The room got quiet after a minute or two. I guess the other had noticed our little "staring contest" and wanted to know what was going on.
"Hey, you guys? Heero?" Duo asked, obviously puzzled by our actions.
When he got no response, Duo grabbed Heero by the chin and forced his face to the side, so that Heero was staring at Duo instead at me.
Duo raised an eyebrow at Heero before throwing his hands into the air and shouting, "What the hell are you two doing? At least say something to eachother! I really doubt you're having some sort of telepathic conversation!" Heero blinked at Duo, before turning back to me and nodding in much the same fashion as Trowa did earlier in the evening. I nodded back.
"Oi!" Duo said, sounding somewhat exasperated, "Language was created so that we don't have to communicate like neanderthals anymore! Maybe you'd both like to use it sometime! You might like it!"
"Perhaps..." I said dryly, smirking at him.
Heero leaned over and whispered something into Duo's ear, and Duo's eyes took on an evil glitter. Heero smiled minutely. Whatever it was he had said, it obviously had had the desired effect.
"Hey, guys? Do you want to go take our seats now? The movie starts in ten minutes." Quatre spoke, after a few seconds, "Does anybody want some snacks?"
"I'll get them!" Duo called, "What does everyone want?"
After various orders for popcorn and soda pop were listed, we left Duo in line and went to take our seats for the movie.
Our seats were fairly easy to find. Quatre had gotten reserved seats. Middle column, middle row. Not too close to the screen, yet not too far. Very nice.
Quatre was the first to find them, so he sat down first, followed closely by Trowa. Heero sat next to him, which left me to either sit next to Heero, or leave room for Duo to sit between us. I opted for the latter. That made my seat second from the end of the row, just incase I needed to leave if something came up. One can never be too careful, watching a movie with Duo Maxwell.
Duo came back with our snacks a few minutes later, arriving just as the opening credits started to roll. He's got good timing, I'll give him that. While he was squeezing his way to his seat, he managed to spill popcorn on the tall woman sitting next to me.
"Sorry!" Duo whispered loudly, causing several people around us to glare in his direction.
The woman payed him no mind, however, and continued to stare at the movie screen coldly. The frigidness in her ice blue eyes could easily have rivaled Yuy's glare as far as the chilling factor went. As a matter of fact, everything about this woman screamed Ice Queen. She was about 6'2", quite tall for a woman and the way she carried herself was quite imposing. She had pale skin and long black hair with silver streaks in it. She was wearing a velvet gown the colour of her eyes, and had several bracelets around one wrist. On her lap, she was holding a book. The covers of it were made of silver.
She glared down at me out of the corner of her eye and it was at that moment I realised I had been openly staring at her. Mumbling an apology, I turned back to the screen and watched the movie.
It was a romance movie. Your typical love triangle. The main character, a pretty young girl who has to choose between her long time boyfriend or a new guy in her class whom she really liked. I looked at the other pilots to see how they liked it. Heero and Duo looked as bored as I felt, but Trowa seemed to like it. Funny. I never would have thought he'd be the sap of the group. Quatre had fallen asleep on Trowa's shoulder, but Trowa didn't seem to mind.
The movie was about three hours long. Far too long for my tastes. The girl chose to stay with her boyfriend in the end and the new guy ended up marrying her younger sister. How tastless.
The woman sitting next to me wasted no time leaving the theatre, jumping out of her seat as soon as the end credits came up. Not that I blamed her. I wanted to leave as well. I watched her hasty retreat out the front doors, when I noticed that she had left her book on her seat.
Ignoring the startled looks of my fellow ex-pilots, I grabbed the book and dashed after her. I shouted back something about a "stupid woman and her book" as an explaination to them, and left the theatre. I looked around the area but the woman was gone.
The other pilots came rushing out after me, in various states of suprise and caution. I quickly explained what had happened to them and showed them the book.
"Maybe there's a name or phone number on it or something!" Duo suggested enthusiatically, "and if not, we could always pawn it off. It looks pricey!"
"Duo!" Quatre chided him, taking the book from me. He looked at the covers of the book and, seeing nothing of importance, opened the first page.
"Aha!" he exclaimed joyfully, "There's a number written on the inside cover!"
"Should we call it?" Duo questioned, "We don't even know if the number is hers!"
"Even if it's not, the person who the number belongs to should know this woman and will be able to tell us where to locate her." Trowa reasoned.
"We can call her from the limo." Quatre suggested, "That way, we can drop it off for her if she needs us to."
"I'm really beginning to regret picking that thing up." I grimaced.
Quatre dialed the number on his cars vid-phone and sat back. The phone rang three times before the image of the woman from the theatre flickered onto the screen.
"May I help you?" she asked sharply.
Quatre faltered at her tone, but regained the courage to speak quickly.
"Actually, we were hoping we could help you. We believe you left your book at the theatre tonight?" Quatre held up the book in question. Almost immediately, the woman's expressions shifted from one of annoyance and bitterness, to one of relief and happiness. Overall, the effect was rather disturbing.
"Oh, thank goodness! You found my book!" she cried, "Will you bring it to me? There's a reward, of course!"
Quatre opened his mouth, undoubtedly to decline the reward, but Duo was fast today.
"We'd be more than happy to bring it to you!" he crowed cheerfully, "Just gimme that address and we'll be there in a flash!"
The woman gave us her address, which Duo eagerly scribbled down on the back of his ticket stub. Saying good bye to the woman, he hung up the phone and told the address the the driver. Finally sitting back in his chair, he glanced back at Quatre and smirked.
"Sorry, Kat. Were you going to say something?"
We arrived at the womans house in about twenty minutes, leaving me to wonder how she got home so fast. The house was a large, Victorian-styled building. It was painted a pale yellow with white trim.
'Not very fitting of an ice queen.' I mused.
Duo, ever the patient one, grabbed the book from Quatre's grasp and ran up to the door, loudly banging the door knocker. I was beginning to see that all that candy Duo ate during the movie was piece after piece of bad idea.
Heero shook his head ruefully and walked up to the doorstep. The rest of us followed, myself being last. Of course, by now, Duo was fed up with waiting and was peering into the eyehole on the door.
"Duo, stop it." Heero warned, pushing him away from the door.
Duo sighed and knocked on the door again. We all waited for about five minutes, with no response.
"Maybe she left." Quatre suggested.
"But she knew we were coming!" Duo protested.
"Let's just leave it in her mailbox and go!" I snapped. I was tired and I wasn't about to spend all night waiting for some woman to answer her door.
"Then we won't get our reward!" Duo cried. He looked at the door. "Maybe she's in there and needs our help. Maybe she fell or something!" He reached for the doorknob and twisted it. The door opened.
"Duo!" Quatre chastised him, "We shouldn't be breaking into peoples houses!"
"We're not! She knew we were coming and she left the door unlocked so obviously she wants us to go in!" he explained, entering the house.
Heero shrugged and followed Duo inside, leaving Quatre, Trowa and myself standing on the front porch.
"They shouldn't be in there." Quatre said quietly.
"So, you'd rather we stand out here all day, waiting for that woman to answer the door?" I asked him peevishly.
"Well, no.... but...." he said hesitantly.
"Come on." Trowa said finally. Quatre looked up at him. "Let's go inside and get the others. If she's not here, Quatre and I can come back tomorrow to give her the book."
Trowa led Quatre inside the house and I followed unhappily. As soon as we got through the doorway, the door slammed shut behind us.
