+ Comments: //Flashback// and *emphasis* and 'thought'. Since this is my 20th fic posted to MediaMiner.org and my 25th fic posted to FanFiction.Net, I thought I'd do something a little special. Takes place around the beginning of the manga "Battlefield of Pacifists", only for the purposes of this fic, it's modified a little. And because this fic is supposed to be a little special, it's my first lemon, so please be nice, okay? ::sweatdrops:: And seriously, I was blushing through the entire lemon part there. I had to force it out of myself! Took forever...jeez. Yeah, so I hope you enjoy it anyway.

'You cannot escape your past, no matter how hard you try to. The people you have influenced along the way will never forget what you did, and to them, you will always be the same person.'
"Oi, Heero, wait up!"
'It's only those who truly see you as who you are that can witness and accept any change that might have occurred, no matter how fine the degree.'
Heero could here Duo still chasing behind him to catch up, so he paused to wait, allowing the other boy to arrive at his side. The American's features were flushed from the sudden exertion, but Heero knew Duo could handle so much more. He had been running for most of his life, after all.
"I don't see why you think we need to be in such a hurry, so trying slowing down a bit, will ya? Or we'll see how fast *you* can run with a pack full of explosives strapped to *your* back!"
Heero didn't choose to respond when he saw the entrance they were looking for. It was hidden pretty well within the wall, but the heat detector the Japanese boy held picked up the electric currents running behind the walls. The wires stopped at the door, curved under it, and continued on the other side the same as they began. From the outside, it looked like a complete wall, but when getting down to the skeleton, it was easy enough to tell that something was being hidden.
"This is what we were looking for." Heero pressed a hand to the door, rapping lightly and hearing the echo bounce back at his hand. "It's hollow. There's something there."
Duo lowered the bag to the ground, careful not to detonate any of the bombs before they were needed. He started digging through the pockets, leaving Heero to wonder what he was doing. "I know I brought it. It's not the type of thing I'd leave home without," he said with a wink. "Ah, success!"
He tossed out a small, black object that vaguely resembled a six-inch long Swiss army knife. Duo flipped it in the air to catch it in his right hand and thumbed a switch. The object doubled in length and a glowing, emerald thermal blade extended outwards, giving the weapon a strong resemblance to the thermal scythe Duo's Gundam carried.
"Isn't it awesome? Back during the war when Trowa smuggled me and Wu the technical readouts on our Gundams, I was wondering if it would work...a scaled down thermal scythe. It was a wicked pain in the ass to find smaller parts that would work, but I think it turned out all right."
Duo started carving out a chunk of the door big enough for one of them to walk through easily. Heero kept watch, gun at the ready, in case any guards decided to get too interested in the actions of two sixteen-year-old boys in an empty corridor. Heero was, in fact, impressed with his friend's ingenuity, but the sound of the smoldering door drowned out most sounds, especially conversation, so Heero decided to bring it up later.
The last part of the door fell in when Duo kicked it, the sound rattling down the hallway. Duo put the scythe away, placed the bag back on his back, and drew his gun back out of the holster at his hip, prepared for whoever might have been guarding the contents of the room, but no one approached them. The two boys just looked at each other, each seeming to question the other as to whether or not it was safe to proceed.
Beyond the hidden door was a production plant, churning out Leos by the day, even though under Relena's law, all weapons were prohibited amongst the UESN. The facility was huge. There had to be at least one hundred suits already finished, with dozens more almost ready to join their comrades in waiting for a pilot to come along. A staircase lead up along the western wall of the room, going into an area that was out of view from their angle on the floor.
Duo smirked. "Relena would flip her lid if she knew these were here," he nodded up at a Leo. "I bet they're battle ready, too."
"Do you want to take care of them?" Heero could practically grasp Duo's wanting to take one out for a ride.
"Nahhh. I'd get a little carried away. You can handle these babies. I'm a little curious as to what's behind curtain number two. I'll catch you outside." Duo offered a brief wave before disappearing up the stairs in a blur of black, braid trailing behind him.
Heero climbed into the nearest Leo, opening the hatch and climbing in, glancing around at the controls. Everything was so new and factory-fresh, unlike his own Wing Zero which, while being practically indestructible, was beginning to show signs of wear and tear. The damage was mostly cosmetic along with some minor malfunctions such as the safety harness tending to lock up and the climate control staying on the warm side, but the Leo represented a generation that lived in the constant fear of war. That fear needed to be destroyed.
Heero directed the Leo to pick up its 105mm rifle, targeted the surrounding Leos, and began to systematically destroy every one in the plant. The room shook around him with the explosions, and pretty soon it was a chain reaction. The explosion from one Leo would trigger the self-destruct mechanism on one next to it, and it continued in that pattern until the room was filled with smoke, but the radar in Heero's Leo read that there was nothing left standing. He turned the rifle towards his own Leo, opened the hatch, and rigged the Leo so it would fire continuously at itself. Heero threw himself from the hatch, the Leo exploding just has he hit the ground. The Japanese pilot winced slightly as the heat waves and shrapnel flew in his direction, but as soon as it happened, it ended, and he looked back at the destruction with a smirk.
Drawing his gun back out in case some unwanted attention was drawn from the explosions, Heero raced off into the direction Duo had gone. His stepped echoed down the metal corridors, and he brought his weapon up to aim at an adjacent corridor at the sound of approaching footsteps. Heero could feel the adrenaline racing through his blood, and for a moment, he felt disgusted with himself and his enjoyment of the potential danger. Even though he accepted the pacifism that had been so difficult to put into effect, Heero knew the soldier in him would have trouble adjusting.
'But not the soldier in him,' Heero thought, when he saw that the source of the footsteps was only Duo. 'He's adaptable. He'll be able to change into a normal civilian without a problem.'
"Yo, Heero, chill!" Duo said with a grin. It took Heero a second to realize that he still had his gun aimed at the self-proclaimed God of Death. "I already erased the computer data."
'Aa, so that's what had been up here...'
"Let's blow this joint, shall we?"
Heero just allowed himself a small smile in response.
"And I'm starving, so we're stopping to eat somewhere along the way. Don't say no, either, or I'll have to ream you a new asshole because my stomach is at the point where it's crawling out up my throat to eat everything in sight!"
Heero couldn't help but roll his eyes. "Duo, eventually all that eating is going to catch up with you." 'It's almost been a year since the war ended, a year since I've seen him last, and he still seems like the same person.' Heero had been planning on blowing the facility up by himself, but Duo just showed up, and the Japanese boy went with it. He knew Duo had his own reasons for just appearing after all the time that had passed, but that hadn't been the right moment to ask about it. Whatever it was, Duo still seemed to be skirting the issue.
Duo snatched the keys to the jeep before Heero could say anything about it and ran for the vehicle, leaping over the door and into the driver's seat. Heero casually climbed into the passenger seat, watching Duo fasten his seatbelt. He didn't notice Duo was staring at him until he heard the other boy clear his throat.
"What?"
"Aren't you going to put on your seatbelt?"
Heero couldn't think of an appropriate response. "Is your driving that bad?"
"Pssh. No! I just don't want to explain to the authorities if we *do* get into an accident on how you survived jumping out of a building, getting shot at, self-destructing your Gundam, countless battles, et cetera, et cetera, only to die in a car accident. I mean, it would seem like a pretty shitty way to go after all the times you've danced with death." Duo shrugged, starting the engine. "Whatever floats your boat, though." He slammed down on the accelerator as hard as possible without jackrabbiting the jeep and ended up fishtailing before finally taking off down the stretch of highway that lead away from O-Star's headquarters.
Heero caught the smug expression on Duo's features when he put on his seatbelt, noticing the odometer climbing up into the eighties. Heero leaned back into the seat. 'Note: Never let a hungry Duo drive.'
"Heero, did you know Relena was at the factory?" Duo waited a few seconds for a response, but none came. "I guess you did."
"I tried not to get in her way," Heero said, Prussian blue gaze staring off in the distance.
"They won't be making Mobile Suits there again!" Duo added with a laugh. He looked over at Heero, who was still looking away at the horizon. "Do you keep in touch?"
"With who?"
"Relena, of course."
"No."
Duo sighed heavily. "She's gonna forget about you, man."
'Is that why you came all this way, Duo? To find out whether or not I was still in touch with Relena?' Heero's curiosity couldn't wait any longer. "Why'd you come down from space?"
"Oh, you know."
'No, Duo, I don't.' "Get into a fight?"
"No!" He looked embarrassed. "What makes you say that?!"
"Fine." 'You aren't going to tell me, so I'm not going to press the issue.' "Trowa and Quatre are doing okay?"
"What?! Oh, those guys..."
"Hm? Who'd you think I was talking about?"
"Uh...never mind."
'The one time I'm feeling conversational he doesn't want to talk at all.' They rode in silence until they approached a cafe, causing Duo to sudden apply the brakes and steer them into the parking lot. Heero rubbed his neck, suppressing an urge to glare at the boy who might have just given him whiplash.
"Hey, I'm hungry, remember? You want anything?"
Heero sat down at a table outside. 'Duo never offers to pay for anything.' "A coffee will be fine."
"Cream? Sugar?" Heero shot a look that seemed to say who-do-you-think-I-am? "Ah, I take that black is fine. I'll be right back!"
'Something is going on with him. Whatever it is, he's avoiding it, but I can tell something is up.' Duo returned a few minutes later with a large glass of soda, a club sandwich, French fries, a plate of fried chicken legs, a salad, and my coffee. 'I don't know how he eats like that,' Heero thought as Duo began to systematically devour the food in front of him.
"Space doesn't need three of us. I left Trowa and Quatre behind."
Heero didn't understand how that justified Duo's sudden arrival on Earth, but as long as Duo was talking, it didn't matter much if it made sense. "Wufei's not with you?"
Duo held up a finger, motioning for me to hold on until he finished chewing. He swallowed, took a sip of the soda, and said, "I thought he'd be with you!"
'So Wufei's off by himself somewhere...' "That's just like him."
"He must be up to the same thing as us." 'I refuse to believe that Duo came down here just to help me blow up a few plants. He knows I can handle that by myself easily.' "So, what's the next target?"
"It's easy to check the companies that made weapons before. We have to look for the newcomers."
Duo responded while chewing on the tip of the straw. "They just don't get it... Holding onto MS."
"The war affected people, but the Earth and the colonies still don't trust each other." Heero closed his eyes, wondering how long it would take until the shattered bridges between the Earth and her daughter colonies would be fully repaired.
"Did you hear the rumor?"
"About Vulkanus?"
"Yup. Any idea who started it?" 'An unmanned OZ factory called Vulkanus exists in perfect shape somewhere in space.' "It might just be a rumor -- Quatre's looking into it, but..."
"What?"
"Some colonists are already organizing against the UESN. They're pretty annoying." Duo threw the plates back on the tray and went over to the trash to throw everything away.
"Who are they? Ex-OZ?"
"No," Duo replied, climbing back behind the wheel of the jeep. "Pacifists. They guys who want 'Perfect Peace'."
Heero didn't understand. "What's wrong with that?"
"Their definition of peace is... Oh, forget it. Let's find a motel."
*~**~*
Heero heard Duo snort the second the other boy came out of the bathroom. "You still have that damn computer lying around?"
The Japanese boy could see Duo's reflection in the monitor. His long, chestnut hair was still wet from the shower, clinging to his back and shoulders. Duo's chest was bare; he only seemed to be wearing a pair of black sweatpants that must have been a size to large because they were slung low on the longhaired boy's hips. Heero hadn't been paying enough attention to notice before, but the effects of a less harsh life were starting to take affect on Duo. He had inched taller than Heero and lost the layer of baby fat in his face, slowly revealing the attractive young man Duo was to become.
"I'll be rid my laptop when you decide to expand the color variety of your wardrobe."
"Well, *obviously* you weren't paying attention, because I was wearing a red shirt earlier, and my boxers are navy blue, so nyah!" Duo stuck out his tongue at Heero.
The Japanese pilot started to chuckle lightly. "Baka."
"Hey! I'm only a baka one hundred and twenty-five percent of the time! The other negative twenty-five percent of the time I'm the complete opposite...an akab!"
Duo's good-natured humor combined with his overly dignified strut was too much for Heero to handle. He started to laugh. Duo seemed surprised for a moment, but soon enough they were laughing together. The American collapsed onto one of the room's queen-sized beds, holding his sides in pain and gasping for air.
Heero stood from his seat at the desk, moving to stand in front of Duo, the corners of his mouth quirked upwards into a slight smile combined with a look of amazement. "How can you laugh so much?"
Duo rolled over onto his stomach. "What do you mean?"
"After all that you've been through and seen, you can always laugh. How do you do it?"
The other boy sat up on the bed, expression solemn, thinking for a moment. "I wasn't always able to, but somewhere along the line I realized that life goes on, and it's up to you whether or not you're going to go along with it."
"But what do you *do*?"
Duo's grin returned as he jumped to his feet. "Here, I'll show you." The grin got even wider, as if he was already laughing at the punch line of a joke I haven't heard yet. "You shake it off. Like this, watch." Duo started to rock from the waist up from side-to-side, vaguely resembling a dog trying to dry off. His arms were held up limply in front of him, seeming to act as the catalyst that pulls out the negative, and then he was done. "See? It's easy."
As comical as it all might have appeared, Heero could tell that Duo was being absolutely serious.
"There's some things I just can't shake off, though." He was staring at the ground, blue-violet eyes refusing to make contact with anything besides his toes. "That's why I'm here."
"Why won't you tell me why you came?"
Duo shrugged. "Because you're going to find out sooner or later. Now, I know another way that makes laughing *really* easy."
Heero went through the most intensively military training known to man, but he was caught off guard when Duo tackled him, causing them both to go sprawling to the closest bed. The Japanese pilot was vaguely aware of fingers ghosting over his ribcage, and no matter how hard he tried to suppress the urge and control himself, he just couldn't.
"My, J would have been surprised if he knew how ticklish his perfect soldier was," Duo said, gazing down at the boy who was writhing in an attempt to get away from those hands, but it was no use.
"Du...o!" Heero found that single syllables at a time were easiest. "Stop. Please!"
The hands stopped dancing across his skin, but Duo Maxwell was still gazing down at him, smirking when Heero hiccupped. "You changed, Heero. Before you would have threatened to kill me...even broken my arms off before you let me anywhere near you."
Heero shrugged as if it was not that big a deal. "The war's over. J's dead. As you said, life goes on." Heero didn't really notice how close their proximity was until he was trying to figure out why the air suddenly smelled like toothpaste, only to realize it was Duo's breath. 'What is going on? Why is he here? Why do I feel so flushed all of a sudden? It's just Duo. He's my friend, but he normally wouldn't show up just to say hi and see how things are doing. And why the hell are we still lying on the bed like this?' Heero made as if to move, but Duo's hand pressed against his sternum, keeping him from moving any further.
"Please, Heero, you want to know why I'm here; it would be easier if I just told you now." Heero lied back down against the mattress, knowing that he wasn't going anywhere unless Duo moved, which wouldn't be happening until the American had to say whatever he needed to get out. "I couldn't stop thinking about you. I don't know how that sounds to you, but just listen for a second. I thought it was because I missed you guys. You know, we'd see each other during the war and hang out together at schools, and face it, Hilde is no where as challenging a competitor when I want a little one-on-one game of hoops as you.
"So I thought I just missed hanging out with the guys. I visited Trowa and Quatre. When Trowa isn't touring with the circus he stays with Quatre, and they both happened to be there when I arrived. They were talking about Vulkanus and all that lovely shit that's been turning up lately. Not to mention that them being all cutesy-putesy to each other was making me feel like that everyone else has moved on with their life and I'm still stuck in the war.
"As much as I love those guys, I wasn't that interested in sticking around for too long, and I think they could tell. Well, at least Quatre could. He can tell everything that's going on with us, it's freaky. He suggested that I go find you and see if you knew anything about Vulkanus, but on the shuttle flight down here I realized that the Vulkanus deal was just an excuse or an alibi or whatever. Quatre didn't really give a rat's ass if you knew about Vulkanus and I sure as hell didn't give a flying fuck. I just wanted to see you! See how post-war life was treating you and all.
"It wasn't that big a problem to find you. You may be good at staying hidden, but face it, I'm the master and I know every trick in the book. After Relena was the first place I figured to look for you, and sure enough, there you were, and here I am."
Heero blinked. "So you're here because you *missed* me?"
Duo nodded his head slowly. "Well, see, that's what I thought at first, but then I got kinda upset that you were following Relena all over Earth and I realized that, hey, I didn't miss you because I wanted a decent basketball opponent. I missed you because I love you. Blowing O-Star to hell and back was a heck of a lot of fun, but seriously, Heero, you can't expect to-"
The American was talking so quickly that it took Heero a good five seconds to catch up and register what the other boy had said. "What?!"
"Huh? Oh. Which part did you miss?"
"The part where you said you love me."
"WHAT?!" Duo clamped both hands over his mouth. "Aw, shit, I said that out loud? Shit shit shit shit shit!"
Heero was still reeling in shock from the words. 'Duo...he...loves me? How could he love me? Sure, Relena's infatuated with me because of some romantic ideal she's built up in her head, but love? Is it possible for me to inspire such an intense emotion? And even if he really *does* love me, how would I reciprocate? Do I feel the same? Am I *able* to feel the same?'
//"Looks like I'm destined to be killed by you after all, ne, Heero?"//
'I wasn't able to kill him. But then again, I couldn't kill Relena, either.'
//"Why are you being so nice to me?"//
//"Here's one last bit of good advice. No matter *what* happens, follow your *feelings*."//
'I'm trying, Odin, but it isn't so easy when you can't identify what you are feeling.'
//"So, you may as well do what your heart tells you, so you won't regret it later."//
Heero reached up, brushing damp bangs out of Duo's eyes. He couldn't read Duo's expression. The other boy's eyes were closed, as if he were afraid of however Heero would choose to respond. "Duo no baka," he replied, speaking barely above a whisper.
Heero leaned up a little, feeling Duo's breath on his cheek. "Ore no baka."
Duo opened his eyes suddenly. He seemed surprised. Actually, saying he was surprised would probably be the understatement of the century. Duo was damn near dumbfounded. "He-Heero?"
The Japanese pilot didn't want to deal with any more conversation. A firm believer that actions speak louder than words, Heero cautiously leaned upward, firmly pressing his mouth against Duo's and wrapping his arms around Duo's lithe form for better balance in his position suspended between Duo and the bed. The American sighed into the embrace, opening his mouth wider to allow their tongues to duel, twine, and caress one another. Heero found himself having problems maintaining a conscious stream of thought with all the sensations coursing through his body.
Their mouths parted for oxygen, but their eyes still stayed locked together, as if daring each other to get up and leave. To walk out. Neither happened, and Duo leaned back into Heero's arms, pressing the other boy into the mattress. Heero couldn't help but groan. Duo's hands felt like they were everywhere all at once, and Heero could tell he was losing control, but frankly, he didn't care. His mind registered one of Duo's hands brushing briefly over the inside of his thigh, and Heero found himself reflexively bucking his hips towards the source of the pressure. This, of course, caused Duo to break the kiss and chuckle lightly.
"That might be getting a little *too* in over our heads at the moment, Heero."
"Duo...onegai? Ore o aisutte kudasai."[1]
"Heero, you're obviously new to this. I don't want to hurt you." Duo began to pull away, but Heero wrapped his hand around the other boy's braid and yanked hard, causing Duo to yelp and grab at the base of his skull. The American winced slightly at the expression he was getting from his soon-to-be-lover. It seemed to say, "You're worried about *me* getting hurt? *Me*?"
"Duo, if you stop now, I just might have to kill you."
Duo looked a little upset. "I don't want anything to happen due to raging teenage hormones. I don't want you to be just another raunchy fuck, Heero!"
Suddenly Heero understood. "Then make love to me, Duo."
Just the look in the Japanese youth's eyes was enough to urge Duo to continue with his ministrations. They were at the point where they no longer needed words. Duo kissed and nibbled from Heero's mouth to trace his jaw line, pausing where neck and jaw meet right below the earlobe, eagerly taking in the flavor of Heero's skin. Duo tore himself away long enough to pull off Heero's green tank top and got right back to work.
Heero was positive that his systems were being overloaded. He felt like he was being pulled to the end of the galaxy and back, held captive under Duo's sweet and wonderful torture. It wasn't long before he felt the American almost literally tearing the pants he was wearing off his body. Heero opened his eyes, never really recalling ever closing them, only to frown mentally upon noticing that Duo was still pretty much dressed. Heero was about to do something about that when he felt Duo's hand wrap around his aching sex. The Japanese boy felt like pure white lightning was coursing through his veins at the touch, and he jerked up towards Duo's warmth.
Duo's attention returned momentarily to Heero's mouth before lifting himself off the bed and looking through the small knapsack he had brought with him. He pulled out a tube of what seemed to be lubricant.
Heero couldn't help but smirk. "Prepared for anything, aren't you?"
"Boy Scout motto," Duo winked, stepping out of the sweatpants so he was only wearing his navy blue boxers.
"H-Hard to imagine you as a Boy Scout, uhhhnnnn." Heero groaned, feeling cool, gel-slicked fingers entering his body. Duo seemed to be searching for something, and Heero realized, after he screamed out in intense pleasure, that Duo must have found it. The longhaired boy seemed satisfied, pulling out his fingers and slipping off the last piece of clothing on his body.
Heero couldn't help but stare. Duo was the most exquisite man or woman he had ever laid eyes on, and he was all for Heero. He watched, enraptured, as Duo coated his own member with the lubricant. Heero was surprised that the sight of Duo stroking himself alone didn't cause him to come automatically. Heero whimpered with his unsatisfied desire.
"Don't worry, Heero," Duo soothed. "I haven't forgotten about you."
"Well then hurry up already," Heero forced out through clenched teeth. He was on the edge. He could feel it.
"This might hurt a little," Duo warned, positioning himself at Heero's entrance. The Japanese boy wrapped his legs around his lover's waist, trying to push himself onto Duo's shaft.
When Duo did enter, Heero's world involved nothing else. There was a slight pain at first, and the best way to describe the sensation was as different, but when Duo started to move and hit the spot he previously struck with his fingers, Heero thought he would die of sheer pleasure alone. It wasn't long before the two lovers found a rhythm, moving together like the parts of a finely tuned machine. Heero was certain that even their hearts were beating as one.
He came first, unable to contain himself any longer, muffling his cries in Duo's shoulder, shortly followed by the American. Both collapsed into a tangle of sweat, limbs, and semen, the smell of male musk and sex permeating the motel room. Heero suddenly found himself very tired.
"Duo?"
"Hmm, koi?"
"Aishiteru."
Duo looked up, smiling. "I love you, too."
*~**~*
They were at the airport, the Vulkanus ordeal getting to out-of-hand for it to be anything harmless.
"Take it easy," Duo said, a cheeky grin adorning his features. "I'll stay here and work."
"Okay," Heero replied, uncertain how the other boy felt with the previous night's...activities. They had said that they loved each other, but at the moment, they had a good three feet of space between them. 'Of course, it's probably because we don't know who could be following us. Wouldn't want an enemy to see any weakness.' "I'll check out Europe."
"That's Romefeller country. Give me a buzz if something's up." Heero could tell that Duo was feeling uncertain, worried. It seemed like they would have to go fight someone, somewhere, and neither one of them wanted to lose what they had just found.
"Don't worry. I've been there before," Heero said, not sure if the words would be any comfort, but it seemed to be all he could offer at the moment.
"Cool. Bye. It's been good talking to you." Duo did a half-wave with his fingers before turning around and walking in the opposite direction.
Heero knew he had to say something. "Duo, wait!" The American stopped, half-turning to face his partner. "About last night..."
Duo ran back towards the Japanese boy, throwing himself in Heero's arms. "No regrets, Hee-koi, okay? I love you. Now promise you'll come back in one piece and no trying to kill yourself."
Heero smiled. He loved Duo. Promising to return wasn't as hard as it would have been before, but now that Heero found himself with someone to care for and protect, someone who cared for him back, it seemed so much easier to force away the soldier and all the training he had endured. 'Maybe, just maybe I'll be able to live in a world without war after all.'

[1] Whoo! Had to dig out my binder containing my 400+ pages of Japanese notes to remember how to conjugate -ru verbs into the command form. Oh yeah, translation: "Duo...please? Please love me." -_-;; Only the Japanese would make it a rule in their language that you must say please after a command. Aw, but I love 'em for it! ^_^
