Duo Maxwell, the star of the track team, was in dilemma.
It had never been a problem for him to had long hair. His friends had no problem with it. His classmates had no problem with it. His sensei had no problem with it. Hell, even his coach, who had always called him a long hair freak, had no problem with it.
The problem was, however, while his coach had no problem with it, he had retired as of last month, and the new sensei had a problem with his braid. And Yuy sensei had issued him an ultimatum - the hair or the team. Though it wasn't a public ultimatum, he knew very well that the sensei would never let him compete again until he cut his hair. And thus, the dilemma.
To everyone else, a haircut hardly meant a thing. It was just that, a haircut. But it wasn't so for Duo. His hair was a lot more than that - it was his past, his memory of a long lost mother and brother. It was his most cherish memory, of a gentle hand combing through his hair soothingly, of a tiny hand tugging playfully at his braid, even if he could never attach any faces to those hands. It was everything Duo would ever have from his loving family - you see, Duo was an orphan, who lost his family when he was four in a car accident.
Well, why not dropped out from the track team then?
The reason was, simply put, he couldn't.
Duo wasn't a star for nothing. He could run, and he tried his best to do so. He could run so well that he received full scholarship to study here, one of the most prestigious private high schools in the country. If he couldn't run anymore, if he couldn't compete for the school anymore, he would lose his scholarship, and the chance to get in the national team. If he lost his scholarship, he couldn't study here anymore as the orphanage that took him in barely managed to provide him his living expenses, and he would lose everything he had ever hoped for his future.
So he was struck between a rock and a hard place, figuratively speaking.
He had tried to negotiate with the sensei. But so far, the sensei had shown no mercy, and he was already missing out one of the major events for the year. While the sensei had covered it up so well that no one had suspected he had a problem with him, it would be too obvious if he missed out the next big event coming up in three months time, and other smaller ones in between. If the school board ever suspected he couldn't run, he would lose everything.
