Prologue

Duo grimaced in distaste as the smell of rotting garbage mixed with something else assaulted his nose. His hand tightened around his weapon as he peered into each cluttered room he passed as he swept his way through the trashed warehouse. Things long since unrecognizable congealed on the floor sucking at his boots as he cautiously made his way down the hall. Why they had to spend the evening skulking around in such a place was beyond him. The warehouse was a converted factory long since abandoned for many years. It was a huge dilapidated grey eyesore in a part of town where for health reasons was not the place to be caught in, day or night made no difference dead was dead; a perfect place for the lowest of the low and morally bereft to conduct business.

Word had it a major deal was happening this evening. Their job was simple get pictures of the deal to build the case against the bad guys. So far, the only activity he encountered was the rats relay racing along the floor and pipes. He just hoped the information from their narc was correct or their mouthpiece would need a new mouthpiece when he was done. With a slight snort, he wondered if his partner was faring any better on his end. They had split up to cover more ground and have the element of surprise just in case.

“Status” that single word crackled through the mini earpiece with a tinny whine, Duo's eyes widened briefly in the darkness, as he was startled out of his reverie, almost tripping over some of the crap sprawled over the floor. “Alls the same since you last asked me that same damn question less than five minutes ago.” came his aggravated whisper as he rolled his eyes in the dark. “You're my partner, not my babysitter. I've got this.” He was getting just a bit fed up with his partners constant babying. He knew they were best friends, had been for years and he was just concerned about him, but he wasn't a rookie and he knew how to do his damn job.

“Just make sure you stay alert and signal if you see anything.” Heero whispered into his mouthpiece as he made his way across the dank warehouse, blatantly ignoring the irritation in Duo's response. “I'm done here, nothings happening. Meet you on the west end in ten minutes.”

“Headed that way now,” navigating by the little bit of light glowing through the broken windows throughout the warehouse, he was distracted by the thought of being home soon and clean. Duo didn't hear the slight movement overhead.

Making his way to the west end of the warehouse Heero was annoyed over the wasted stakeout, he was glad this was almost over with he needed to talk to his partner when they got home. He knew he was being irritating, but he couldn't help it. He was a bit antsy, things had changed between them over the past months and he'd been building up the nerve to broach a certain topic with Duo, and he finally had enough courage to do so.

“There's movement over here…looks like it's about to get interesting. I'm moving in for a closer look.” Duo whispered to his partner.

“Can you see what they're doing? I'm on my way over, stay out of sight.”

“I'm gonna go higher,” he said as he climbed up on a scaffold to get a clearer view.

“Well” he asked

“Heero---“ Duo screamed

“Duo! status…what---“ the sound of gunshots echoing through the warehouse cut Heero off. “Shit” he cursed as he started to run.

The blast from the explosion rocked Heero on his feet. “Duo!” he yelled in to the mic, static his only answer. He raced towards the sound of falling debris. Skidding to a halt, he fell to his knees frantically shifting through the settling mess looking for his partner. “Duo! Where the hell are you?” A piece of cloth caught his eye it was Duo's jacket. Shoving objects aside he found his partner buried amongst the mess. Rolling him over gently on his back, he saw a trickle of blood running down from a gash in his temple and a red stain spreading on his left side. Feeling an icy ball of fear in the pit of his stomach as he felt for a pulse, he exhaled softly the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding when he felt the faint sporadic flutter against his fingers. Switching frequencies on his transmitter, he called dispatch giving their location and requested an ambulance for an agent down and backup.

Taking off his jacket, he made a pillow to cradle Duo's head in his lap. No bandages were available so he made a make shift ones by ripping the sleeves of his shirt to staunch the flow of blood from Duo's head and side. In the midst of that mess, Heero sat holding Duo telling him all the things he couldn't say to him face to face while they waited for help to arrive.

Heero heard the ambulance when it arrived and called out their location to the medics. Heero briefed them on what he knew about the unconscious man. Being listed as his next of kin he was able to make to the necessary decisions for Duo. They applied a temporary dressing to the wound in his side; carefully wrapped his head wound and started him on an I.V drip, taking his vital signs as they loaded him in the ambulance. The other detectives who arrived on scene looked at detective Yuy's face and decided to wait until later to take a statement.

As they were cordoning off the blast location, no one noticed the figure melting into the shadows watching the scene as it unfold. Hugging the wall tight and moving in the opposite direction of where the ambulance waited the lone figure chuckled and whispered, “Now it begins.”

The wailing of the sirens tore through the silent night as the ambulance rushed its occupants to the hospital, a stark contrast against the soft rain pelting quietly outside against the concrete. In the back of the ambulance, covered in blood and sweat Heero Yuy looked at his unmoving partner. An icy finger of dread ran up the stoic detective's spine; his best friend lay pale and unconscious on the gurney in the back of the ambulance.

Careful not to jar any of the tubes and beeping machines hooked to the youth; he took hold of his hand as if willing him to move. `Come on Duo open your eyes…say something.' Heero begged. No response answered the fervently whispered plea just the shallow rasp of labored breathing. Heero bowed his head and prayed to a god he did not believe in for the soul of his partner; wondering how a mission so simple in an instant had gone wrong.
