----------------------

When you're stoned, baby, and I am drunk
And we make love, it seems a little desolate
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point

When I'm having to hold this fire down
I think I'll explode, if I can't feel this freely now
- "Stoned" by Dido

----------------------

He had known that the end was coming before it ever happened. He felt it deep down, in his essence, his heart, his very soul. It happened… just like he had known that it would… just as he had played it out in his own mind, over and over, fearful and apprehensive…

His lover left him.

His support.

His future.

His hope…

He had known how, and even why, it was going to happen; he knew the motives and the plan. It was then that he pushed it all away, disconnecting himself from everyone and everything he knew and loved. He disappeared to wait.

When the time came, he was ready. Three sides to this war and then there was him; He who would help the only one that had ever mattered fulfill their ends. The means to an end… and that was okay. Lives are expendable in war.

His life was expendable.

If this was the only way he could be closer to Zechs, then so be it. Reasoning hadn't worked and faced with this failure, he was defeated. He now knew that he would do anything for the blonde man. Absolutely anything.

"Zechs… I love you…"

The world watched in horror and adoration when he died. One slice of a beam; one lapse of consciousness.

A means to an end.

He hoped Zechs was happy; He'd given his life to make him that way.

In the background, the seconds of stillness that followed the death, Zechs cried.

The means to an end… The battle continued.
