Pale fingers trembled as Heero bit his lip, feeling his stomach twist and rumble into painful knots as each second ticked by. He pulled roughly at the sealed envelope, his mind working the joints in his hand mechanically as his heart screamed at him not to open the grievous invitation.

The cream flap with gold trimming was lifted, however, and the dainty invitation slowly slid out, guided by those trembling digits. The Japanese boy held in a sob as he read the names intertwined in gold lettering. `You are cordially invited to the marriage celebration of Duo Maxwell and Hilde Schbeiker…'

Heero went to the wedding.

Two Years later…

Full lips stretched into a grateful smile as Heero took the small stack of mail from the elderly postman. He hummed slightly, sifting through the letters, mentally checking each one off as a bill or advertisement until he came across a light blue envelope. His slim brows knitted together as he took a seat at his small kitchen table. The front was addressed to him, and the return address was…

Heero's breath hitched slightly in his throat, it was slight and nearly unnoticeable, but he knew it was there. Reprimanding himself for the physical reaction, he frowned sternly, carefully folding a sheet of indifference over his eyes. Cold fingers scratched at the closed letter, pulling the paper off. Finally seeing the small white spine of a card, the ex-pilot reached into the envelope and pulled out a thick white card, with a quaint rocking horse and a baby's rattle decorating the cover.

Icy eyes softened immediately as thin fingers opened the card deftly. Sky blue lettering informed him in cursive script that a baby was on the way and he was invited to Duo and Hilde Maxwell's baby shower. The brunette didn't even notice when the card slipped silently between his fingers; his eyes were distant and pained.

Heero went to the shower.

One Year Later…

A gentle sigh escaped pink lips, as a brow wrinkled in concentration. A twenty-one year old Heero Yuy sat chewing his pen lightly in his spacious cubicle. There was a generous amount of paperwork laid out before him. A large tan hand reached out to land gently on the boy's shoulder, causing him to jump in surprise.

There was a small chuckle, "You ok, Yuy?" the tall Chinese asked from behind his seated companion. The boy turned, his startled expression fading, "Yes, gomen. I'm just trying to finish up some paperwork." The raven-haired man nodded, his brows turned downward as he leaned over his friend's shoulder to inspect, "I see. Well don't stay too late, it's already eleven." A confused look crossed the Japanese man's face, and his eyes darted to a small digital clock situated at his desk. Geometric red numbers flickered, '11:02'.

Thin, dark brows shot up, "How'd it get so late so fast?" he asked, maybe more to himself then to the other. "I really couldn't tell you," the other said folding his arms over his chest, "You've been here practically all day, Heero…" he trailed off, casting a worried glance down on the other. Said boy merely looked up at him and shrugged, "I have a lot of work to do. Don't worry yourself about it."

Shenlong's ex-pilot only frowned, "Heero this isn't healthy. You get here before anyone and leave after everyone. You stagger into the office everyday with dark circles under your eyes, and you're getting thinner and paler by the day."

Heero suppressed a glare as he spoke, "I'm fine. I'm not any thinner or paler then I was when you first met me." The Chinese sighed deeply, "Why can't you get over him? He hurt you so deeply and yet you still harbor so much emotion toward him." Sunken blue eyes shot open wide for a moment, and Heero grit his teeth in annoyance, "Wufei…" his voice was low and held a tone of warning.

The preventer didn't pay any heed to the warning, however, and pressed on, "Everyone's been so worried about you. You hardly sleep or eat, not to mention you only leave your house to come to work." The brunette's eyes were shadowed as he stood up from his swivel chair, his fist clenched shut, "What I do is none of anyone else's concern. I don't have a problem and I most definitely don't harbor any emotions." He said slowly and in a defiant voice.

Wufei frowned, stepping forward, and grabbing his friend by the shoulders, "Heero…" he managed to say, then gasped loudly as he squeezed the others shoulders tightly, feeling the bones jar out from the material of the jacket. With a horror-stricken expression, the Chinese pulled at the others coat revealing a large sweater with three shirts underneath. "What the fuck?" he asked out loud as the other still struggled under his grip.

"Wufei!" he barked, "Let go!" he ordered, and feebly attempted to shove the other back. By now, coffee colored eyes were wide, and Wufei's mouth was unhinged as he complied releasing his friend, "Heero…w-when was the last time you ate?" The other flinched involuntarily at the question, and tried to brush past the taller man, "I'm fine." he said coldly and rushed to the entry of his office, only to be restrained by the strong hand holding his arm.

"Heero, please! I'm serious. You're so thin," he spun the other around to face him. "You look like a sheet of paper! Why won't you listen to me?" Heero's eyes were clenched shut as he heard the other yell at him, he began to perspire in nervousness and felt the room begin to spin around him. He heard the other speaking to him as his breathing became difficult and neon spots pricked behind his eyelids. He could feel his heart pounding and the other grab his shoulders until darkness washed over him.

"Heero!" Wufei yelled as the other's body fell limp and leaned against his own. Forcing himself to stay calm, Wufei awkwardly maneuvered the smaller body into his arms and rushed down the hallway to the nearest elevator. Kicking the button against the wall he looked down on the boy in his arms, worry and fear etched across his features, "Stay with me…" he whispered, his head snapping up as the elevator door chimed.

He swerved into the emergency room parking lot, where a crew of paramedics were anxiously awaiting him with a stretcher. Just as the unconscious man was laid out on the stretcher a slender woman with two blonde braids came running out of the sliding doors, her white coat billowing out behind her, "What happened?" she yelled looking up into her husband's eyes.

The other shook his head shrugging, "I dunno, Sally, I was talking to him and he closed his eyes, like he was in pain, and suddenly passed out!" was all he could say as they hurried through the busy hallway of the hospital.

The blonde grabbed at Heero's wrist checking his pulse and shouted a sundry of orders. Wufei stood just outside the doorway, with his arms crossed over his chest. Sally and two nurses were busy inside the room trying to discover the cause of the Japanese man's sudden collapse.

Wufei closed his eyes, his mind rolling the scenario over in his head. A few minutes later a petite heavyset nurse, with reddish brown curls quickly walked out of the room and down the hall before the Chinese could stop her. Upon her return, moments later, Wufei noticed the reason behind her rush as she carried two full I.V. bags and a syringe.

Three more minutes passed and Sally came out of the room, rubbing the bridge of her nose thoughtfully, "He's dehydrated and malnourished. We can't give him too much because his stomach is empty. Why hasn't he been eating?" the words tumbled out of her mouths, her light eyes becoming misty. Wufei grabbed his wife in an understanding hug; "He's depressed. The love of his life left him for another." The doctor sniffled into her husband's chest, "I feel so sorry for him. He can't see how much we care for him."

The braided girl pulled back suddenly from her husband, desperation in her eyes, "Wufei, he's incapable of taking care of himself. He has to move in with us." The raven-haired man's eyes widened for an instant, "Move in? Are you sure Sally? He won't agree with that." The doctor shook her head vehemently; "I don't care. He's going to if he knows what's good for him."

Wufei sighed rolling his eyes, when his wife got this attitude everything went her way, "Alright it's fine with me, but you're most likely going to be the one packing his bags." She nodded, a relieved smile on her lips, "You can go in. He should regain consciousness by morning. He was sleep deprived." Wufei nodded, bending down to kiss the shorter woman on the cheek before she walked back down the hallway.

Placing a hand on the cold white door, the preventer walked into the sterile hospital room to see another mousy nurse bustling around his bed. She looked up when she heard the door open and smiled a meek smile, taking a hint to leave the two alone. Wufei smiled back at her and walked up to the bed where Heero lied with an I.V. in his arm. Sighing, Wufei grabbed the chair nearest to the bed, and looked to his cell phone. Noting that it was almost one he opted to call Quatre in the morning.

Thick lashes fluttered open as warm sunlight was cast upon an ashen face. Dazed blue eyes focused on the plain ceiling of the hospital, and Heero sat up tentatively, "Don't try to sit up!" a worried voice instructed from beside him, causing him to start in surprise. Sally giggled quietly and gently placed her hands on the Japanese, guiding him to lie back down, "You really scared Wufei and I last night."

Heero looked up to her, "I'm alright, you don't have to worry." Her sky blue eyes softened, "Heero, you're in unacceptable health. Don't tell me you're all right. I'm a doctor." The brunette couldn't stop the small curl at the tips of his lips, "Thank you Sally, but may I go home now?"

"No," she said, her eyes darting to look out the window, "I'd like to ask you something first." Deep sapphires focused on her, and unconsciously she became nervous, "Wufei and I discussed your health and since you and Wufei are both preventers, and we're all friends we thought…"

"No," the boy on the bed cut in, "I'm not going to move in with you," he finished firmly. Sally frowned, her lips turning in disapproval, "Well, you don't have a choice, Wufei and I love you and we're worried so you're moving in and-"

Dark brows creased and a scowl spread over Heero's features, "Sally, I'm not…" But the woman pressed on, speaking over his voice, "And that's final!" she said with a look that left no room for discussion. The Japanese preventer sighed and looked down to his arm, resting on his lap; an I.V. was pumping saline into his system, and was beginning to itch, "Alright," he relented.

Sally smiled, her teeth gleaming happily, "Good. Now do you think you can eat?" Before the man could begin to shake his head, the blonde doctor shoved a tray of fresh fruit and bright red Jell-O in front of him.

The pale man's weak stomach lurched in protest, and his lips quivered at the sight, "Ne, Sally I'm not very hungry…" As he trailed off the braided woman frowned, "Well you're going to eat a little bit, even if I have to force feed you." Her voice was stern and solid like steel and her eyes reflected the same determination.

Heero gulped, shakily lifting his arm to grab the fork. "T-thank you," Was all he could say as he lifted a ripe strawberry to his cracked lips. The young preventer closed his eyes in pleasure as the berry's juices tickled his tongue.

Sally smiled watching her friend eat, "Now don't eat too much, you might get sick," she warned with a careful loving tone. Blue eyes smiled up at her and the brunette nodded, "So…" he mumbled around a blueberry, "When do you want me to move in?"

Wufei sighed, pulling out the chair to his desk and picked up his office phone dialing in a familiar number. He frowned slightly, as moments passed, the tone ringing in his ear when suddenly a voice on the other end answered, `Quatre Winner speaking.' The ex-pilot's face softened noticeably at the response, "Quatre it's Wufei, we need to talk. It's about Heero." The other listened carefully, `Hey Wufei, Is Heero alright?'

The Chinese man's forehead creased in concentration, "No, actually he's not doing well at all…" For about the next fifteen minutes Wufei spent time explaining to the Winner heir about the physical and mental condition of the once indestructible soldier. `Oh Wufei. I'm so sorry. This is terrible. Trowa and I are going to come down to visit ASAP." The other smiled slightly, "Alright, Sally's asked him to move in with us so just stop by the house and give us a call."

Quatre's eyes watered slightly at the thought of his hurting friend, "I will. See you in probably two or three days. I'll keep in touch and tell Heero I say hello and hope he's feeling better soon." Wufei nodded, "I will. Thank you Quatre. Goodbye."

As Wufei hung up the phone he leaned on both elbows on the desk, rubbing his temples softly, "Oh Duo, do you know what you've done to him?"
