No one moved around the large table. All eyes were frozen, as the friends sat in a tense and stagnant silence. A full five minutes had passed in silence, and now the boy in Heero's arms had all but drifted into a fitful sleep, his dinner, the medicine, and his tears knocking him unconscious.
Heavy chocolate locks hid the relieved smile that flickered across the Japanese man's features before it was gone again. Carefully schooling those assets, he lifted his face, his eyes slowly trailing over each person around the table, before he silently stood. His eyes had defrosted but his face still held a look of determination.
Turning to the blonde across the table with a look that begged forgiveness, he pursed his lips before speaking, “Forgive me. I shouldn't have said those things to you.” The tears still swimming in her crystalline eyes made his heart clench, but he ignored it and nodded apologetically to the rest of the table before silently walking towards the door with his bundle still sleeping against his chest.
Duo watched silently, his demeanor concealing his inner thoughts. His dark eyes slowly slid, following the shorter even as he made to leave.
Stopping just before he stepped trough the doorway, Heero turned, his eyes surveying the dysfunctional scene. The table was a wreck of spilled food and rumpled cloth, the stains pooling and setting as his eyes moved to his friends. Quatre seemed to be in shock, his face was pale and his eyes were shining with disbelief. Trowa was gripping his hand comfortingly, though his own countenance seemed drained as well. Wufei still seemed faintly angry, his eyes averted from Heero's face. Sally had been staring down at her lap, struggling to understand, but she at least lifted her gaze to his.
Finally the blue eyes landed on Duo. The tall father was still standing, his arms across his chest and his posture rigid. It took Heero a moment before he could look into the Amethyst gems, and when he did he felt a pang of regret. They were dull of emotion, but glittered in a calculating way that told Heero their conversation wasn't over. They stared in silence for a moment before a slight movement in the American's chin told Heero he had permission to tuck Cameron in.
“Goodnight,” he mumbled, his eyes wordlessly thanking the older. With that, the brunette left the silent dining room and made his way up the stairs.
“What…just happened?” Quatre asked, turning to the people around him for an answer. His heart was aching for both his nephew and his friend and he couldn't even describe the situation. Why had Heero come to dinner so…detached?
“I don't know, but Heero's got some explaining to do.” Wufei answered in a calm but simmering tone.
At his words, his wife turned to him quickly, “Maybe we should just leave him alone. Give him some time to-“
She was quickly cut off, however, as Wufei abruptly stood. His fists were clenched and his eyes were closed, “No.” he said quietly. He took a moment to regain his composure and opened his eyes to look down on Sally. “We've left him alone long enough. Tomorrow he talks.” Leaving no room for argument he nodded to everyone and said goodnight, stooping to kiss his wife's cheek before leaving the room.
Trowa sighed quietly as he watched the Chinese silently walk away and turned to his blonde lover. “We should go to bed too. Tomorrow's going to be a long day.” Gathering the smaller Arabian in his hold and helping him stand, they began to leave the room. Before they made it to the hallway, however, the taller stopped, his green eyes pinning Duo. “Not everything has to wait until tomorrow,” he said before continuing to their room.
Silence was once again filling the room, Duo glared at the floorboards while Sally fiddled with the napkin in her lap. Before either could speak, Demitri was out of the kitchen and bustling around the table to clean. The blonde smiled at him, grateful for his help and for the noise he provided. He smiled back and bid both her and her braided comrade good night before retreating back into the kitchen.
This time when the quiet began to seep back in, Sally sighed and stood. Violet eyes glanced up at the movement and watched as she smiled back at him and spoke.
“Heero's a funny guy, you know?” Violet eyes twitched slightly in confusion as she glanced away to continue. “He lost his mind in the zero system and bounced right back, but,” she clasped her hands together and turned back to Duo. “When he lost his heart he almost stopped living.”
Duo's eyes widened at her words and he had to look away in embarrassment. She only smiled at him and hummed quietly to herself before silently leaving and heading off to bed.
Now that he was alone, the braided man didn't know what to do. He didn't want to stay in the deserted dining room, but he didn't want to face the scene waiting for him in his bedroom. He chewed the inside of his cheek angrily before making up his mind and stalking out of the room purposefully. His footsteps were hard against the staircase and he didn't hesitate at the bedroom door.
Swinging it open, but mindful of his son's sleeping, he surveyed the room in slight surprise. From the doorway, he could see his son lying on the bed, his eyes closed and his breathing even. Heero was still there, sitting silently on the edge of the bed, his hand slowly rubbing up and down the baby's back. The younger looked as if he was in a trance, he hadn't moved at the noise from the stairwell or the door opening and he appeared to be oblivious to Duo's presence even now.
The Japanese brought his hand up and down slowly, pausing to brush aside the wispy locks on the small forehead. He smiled, and caressed the young cheek before finally feeling eyes on his back.
Duo held his breath, he had wanted to walk in on a scene like this long ago, with his wife. But now she was gone, the woman he loved never really having been there at all, only an idea of who he thought he should marry. He slowly realized that blue eyes were now on him and he forced himself to breathe, his own eyes locking on cobalt.
His thoughts were jumbled as he tried to grasp the words to say to the other that merely stared at him in silence, he sucked in a breath to finally speak.
“He's asleep.” Duo deflated at the other's words, relieved that he'd chosen to break the silence and nodded in reply. He took a cautious step forward and noticed when the other stiffened. Hoping to keep the other at ease, he went around the bed to sit on the opposite side and looked down at his sleeping son.
There was a thick silence before Heero suddenly made to leave, feeling out of place with the braided man so close. He stood, taking a step towards the doorway, “So you're his tenshi, huh?”
The question made him stop, but he remained facing the doorway. “Yes,” he answered quietly, his voice barely laced with guilt at the admittance and nervousness for the imminent response. Duo didn't respond immediately and the silence prompted Heero's curiosity to turn and see his expression. Facing the other, he refrained from biting his lip. The American kept his eyes on his son, but noticed when the shorter had turned back around.
“He's very fond of you.” Heero nodded in acknowledgment at the statement.
“When did you meet him?” The expected question still caught the Japanese youth off guard and he fumbled with an answer.
“The first night you came…” he paused, gauging the other's reaction, when he lifted his dark eyes, he continued. “You were downstairs with the others. It was already past midnight and I woke up to someone crying.” He paused for a second time, his eyes going over to the sleeping figure on the bed. “I followed the crying to your room and found him here, alone.”
Duo nodded, the memory of the sweet scent that lingered in his room when he'd come back late that night still in his mind.
“When I first walked in he thought I was his mother,” Heero said, the statement causing the father's shoulders to hunch and harden. “Then he got a good look and asked if I was his guardian angel.” Heero smiled at the memory, and shifted his hips where he stood. “I told him the word for angel was where I was from and it stuck.”
Duo had noticed with surprise when the other had smiled, and nodded now in understanding before turning back to rub his son's cheek. “Thank you,” he said quietly, earning himself a wide-eyed stare from the shorter.
“For what?” Heero nearly whispered.
Duo stopped, and glanced back up at the other, “For being his tenshi.”
The darkness concealed the standing young man's blush as he nodded, swallowing, “Your welcome.” Feeling more at ease, Heero turned and put his hand to the door.
“Goodnight, Heero”
He paused, his head quickly spinning to find heavy violets boring into him. Feeling his heart thump, he gripped the doorknob tighter in annoyance. “Goodnight,” he whispered back, before shutting the door quietly and walking to his room.
Shutting his own door and shedding his clothes, he settled into bed, his heart still beating rapidly but his chest tightened in a feeling of remorse. He'd acted so rude to his friends at dinner, and they'd been nothing but loving. How could he have treated the people who cared for him that way?
He gripped his covers tightly, and turned on his side. He knew tomorrow held the promise of long conversations and heated arguments. Closing his eyes, he sighed, and tried to fall asleep without thinking about bright amethyst eyes.
Long bangs were swept aside as Trowa sat up in bed. His green eyes were cloudy but he could see the early morning sun streaming through the closed blinds. Hearing the sink, he turned to the bathroom's closed door, realizing what had woken him up. He waited for the water to stop and once it did, his smaller lover walked quietly out of the bathroom, his face downcast.
It pained the ex-pilot to see his blonde love like this; pale features drawn and a worried look in his eyes. Pushing aside the comforter, he smiled sadly as he realized that the Arabian hadn't even noticed he'd woken up. “Good Morning my little love,” he said softly, and patted the empty spot beside him on the bed.
Aqua eyes glanced up immediately with surprise and the worn expression melted into a false but content smile. The blonde eagerly accepted the invitation and hurried to bounce onto the bed and into his lover's arms. “Good Morning,” he whispered quietly and leaned in for a solid kiss.
The green-eyed youth made a noise of content and snuggled down into the sheets, Quatre safely held in his arms. “Today's when we find out if we made a mistake by bringing him.”
Pale turquoise glanced up at the other's words, “What should we say?”
“We won't say anything unless it's directed at us, of course.” The blonde rolled his eyes at his lover's bluntness. He opened his mouth to retort but stopped when the other continued, “They can do this, Quatre. They have to. I think they both know what they need.”
Quatre nodded and snuggled deeper into the firm hold, his cheek pressed gently to the strong chest. Breakfast would be coming soon and he could already sense the smell of coffee drifting up from the kitchen. He wondered vaguely how it would all turn out.
Pale fingers gripped white porcelain tightly as quiet retching noises echoed miserably through the large bathroom. Hot tears streamed down red cheeks as Sally struggled to calm her breathing. Sitting up, she sighed in relief, thankful for the short reprieve. Huddled on her bathroom floor she heard her bedroom door creak open and her husband call to her.
She'd been asleep, not noticing when he'd gotten out of bed until the strong stench of coffee and bacon had rudely awakened her and hastened her morning sickness. She jumped, startled when her husband barreled into the bathroom suddenly, his face anxious and his eyes wide in worry.
Her shock gave way to a small smile; it was cute how eager he was to help now that he knew she was carrying his child. “Are you alright?!” he asked, stooping over to her level, after a quick glance at the toilet.
The blonde nodded slightly before her stomach lurched and she hurried to empty herself once more. Her throat burned as she continued to gag on bile. Faintly she noticed when Wufei grabbed at her hair, pulling it away from her face and mouth and began to rub her back gently.
When she finally felt settled enough, she slumped back into the corner, her eyes blood-shot and her mouth slightly open as she struggled to breathe. She felt disgusting and hurried to flush the toilet when the smell reached her. Her heart swelled however when the Chinese man bent forward to kiss her damp forehead softly. “I love you,” he whispered and gently guided her to stand.
Hurrying over to the sink, she brushed her teeth, the events of last night all suddenly flooding back to her. Her eyes watered a little when she thought of the upcoming battle for Heero, her heart already having forgiven him for last night. Rinsing her mouth, she glanced behind her in the mirror, blue eyes raking over her husband as he sat by protectively, drinking his coffee and looking over the paper. She knew the man had a mean temper and one hell of a grudge but that he also loved Heero and would hopefully be able to look passed last nights argument.
Once again the strong scent of frying bacon wafted around her and she hunched over the sink in an attempt to calm her stomach. She knew breakfast would be finished soon and everyone would be at the table, she only hoped everything would work out the way she'd dreamed of for her Heero.
“How could I have been so stupid?!” Heero quietly berated himself in a rare display of frustration. Making his bed for the third time, he sighed and decided to go take a shower. It was still early enough and he knew that his tendency to clean when he was nervous or frustrated would only serve to work him up more.
Taking a deep breath he turned on the water until steam filled the bathroom. Stepping under the hot spray he sighed, forcing his muscles to relax. Grabbing the shampoo bottle his mind began to wander to each inhabitant of the house and how he was going to personally address and apologize to each one.
First and foremost was little Cameron. The poor baby had almost broken down when he'd rejected him last night and the look in those deep blue eyes that reflected his own had nearly broken his heart. He had to tell the little boy how deeply he cared for him and how sorry he was for being a cold-hearted tenshi.
Suddenly teary ice-colored eyes came to view; `Sally'. The woman who he'd grown so close to in the last few weeks, he'd dare to call her a sister. She'd taken such diligent care of him that she'd failed to notice her own pregnancy! How could he have said those hurtful and ungrateful things to her? His stony comments lashed out at him and he winced. He would have to show the blonde just how thankful he was for her.
He thought of Trowa. The taller boy had been there for him throughout the war, his presence always there and always slightly protective. Even when Duo had left, he'd known that day at the wedding. His emerald eyes had glittered with pity and he'd hugged Heero with a tight and demanding intensity. Heero had disregarded his feelings last night as well and thus deserved an apology.
Immediately Trowa's blonde lover came to mind. Quatre shared a common scar from the zero system with himself. The two of them having bonded simply because of the Arabian boy's caring heart. He cared for Quatre just as much as he did Trowa. The two being like family, and he'd seen the pained expression on the blonde's face last night as well.
Grabbing the conditioner, he inhaled the sweet strawberry smell and thought of Duo. His feelings for the older had only intensified since he'd seen him last night and he dreaded seeing him the most. He couldn't understand why he still cared for the man who as a teenager had wounded him so badly. `Duo doesn't care about you,' he berated himself inwardly, `you're acting sillier then a romance novelist.' Still, he had disrespected his ex-lover and hurt his child's feelings. That in it's self deserved an apology.
Finally he thought of Wufei. Wufei, who'd only been looking out for his best interest from the start. Wufei, who'd admired him so from the wars. Wufei, who he considered family. He'd disrespected his dear friend in front of his wife and his friends. In his own home, which he'd offered to him, he'd dishonored him by hurting his wife and the mother of his future child.
Heero bit his lip unconsciously and began to scrub himself harder with his wash rag. He owed Wufei the biggest apology. He felt nervous but knew all he could do was be honest and apologize from the heart.
Another sneeze made the worried father peek his head around the bathroom wall, a toothbrush dangling from his mouth. Cameron was seated on the floor playing quietly with the stuffed bear in his pudgy hands. Despite his good behavior his eyes were puffy and he had a runny nose despite the medication he was on.
Braiding his hair after finishing with his teeth, Duo sighed inwardly, replaying the encounter the bedroom encounter with Heero last night in his head. He grabbed the Kleenex box and strode out to sit on the floor and pull his baby into his lap. He lifted up a white tissue to the red nose and gently asked the boy to blow.
Distractedly rubbing the dark hair once he'd crumple up the used tissue, his thoughts once again returned to the Japanese down the hall. He had heard running water shut off a little over ten minutes and knew that soon everyone was awake and would soon be making their ways downstairs.
Auburn brows shot down in thought, last night had raised many questions to the surface and his wife's words stung him like a slap. Did he still have feelings for Heero? A tiny voice in the back of his mind and his heart quickly supplied the dreaded answer and Duo paled.
“Daddy?”
The small voice instantly dragged him from his musings and he glanced down, smiling at his son in question, “Hmm, Cam?”
“Where's tenshi?” the dark eyes glittered much like the angel's they questioned for and Duo found himself looking away.
“He-“ the braided man paused, carefully choosing his words. Cameron obviously had a genuine like for the other boy and he didn't see anything wrong with his own attraction toward him. With the tiny revelation, the violet-eyes lit up and Duo looked back down into curious blues, “He'll be at breakfast.”
When Quatre and Trowa made it to the breakfast table Wufei and Sally were already there; the Chinese eating his breakfast while his wife quietly sipped some hot tea. Quatre managed a smile and a bright `Good Morning,' while Trowa simply quirked his lips nodding.
Sally smiled pleasantly, welcoming them and Demitri hurried to bring them both their coffee and their plates. By the time Trowa was picking up his fork Heero was walking silently through the doorway, his hair damp and messy.
His quiet `Ohayo' made the table go quiet and the utensils still for a moment. Wufei's eyes burned silently, but he nodded with Sally's prompting. She smiled warmly and responded with a greeting of her own. Quatre smiled, silently holding out his hand as the other passed and Trowa nodded with a quiet, `morning'.
Demitri quietly brought him a small bowl of fruit and Heero smiled gratefully when he slid him a cup of tea with a smile. Less then hungry, the Japanese merely sipped at his tea, distantly wondering where Duo and his young son were.
Within minutes the young father and his son had come down the stairs and were now seated at the table. Duo gratefully inhaled his coffee as Cameron did the same with his mini waffles. “Morning Tenshi!” he beamed, before greeting his aunts and uncles.
Heero smiled contently and rubbed the small head, “Morning Cammy-chan.”
After all the `Good Mornings' were said a heavy silence set in; the lag from the night before pressing down on the friends. Heero's heart beat in anticipation, he and Duo hadn't acknowledged each other yet, but he still needed to apologize to everyone else.
Clearing his throat he managed to gather his courage and he look up into expectant obsidian orbs. “Wufei,” he said pausing as the other merely stared back, waiting. He took a quick breath, “my behavior last night was rude and uncalled for. Forgive me for disrespecting you, your wife and your hospitality. I'm very appreciative and I was out of line.”
His blue eyes shimmered with a nervous honesty, he couldn't read the other, “I'm sorry,” he said quietly, his eyes begging for forgiveness.
Wufei could see the honest remorse and guilt on the pale face, and he smiled slightly, “All's forgiven.” He could see the other shrink, letting out the breath he'd been holding. “But that doesn't mean you don't have to explain yourself,” he said.
Heero was relieved and he smiled back nodding, and turned to Sally his eyes still shining, “Sally, gomen ne. I shouldn't have said those things to you. You don't deserve it. Thank you so-“
The blonde hurried to interrupt him, waving a dainty hand with false nonchalance, “Don't worry about it,” her secret smile let him know she had already forgotten it and he nodded thankfully.
“I'm sorry to the rest of you as well. You shouldn't have had to see me like that and it was…” Trowa and Quatre smiled together and stopped his apology as well.
“We understand, just don't do it again,” Quatre winked lovingly while Trowa smiled and nodded, his eyes twinkling.
Duo merely drank his coffee, his eyes boring into Heero, but his mouth otherwise closed.
Heero swallowed and opted to simply turn to the smaller boy beside him, “Forgive your tenshi, Cammy-chan? I'm sorry I was so cruel.”
Syrup oozed down the corner of the small mouth and the little boy blinked before grinning widely, “Of course tenshi!”
The Japanese boy's eyes softened at the sweet sight and he lifted a napkin to the messy trail, quietly thanking the brunette.
“What happened last night?”
The sudden question made all eyes turn to Duo and Heero sucked in a deep breath at the sudden voice, his courage leaving him all in a rush. Cameron seemed unaffected as he continued to munch on a tiny eggo, but his eyes shifted from his aunt and uncles questioningly.
Swallowing again, Heero moved around uncomfortably in his chair before responding. “I-I've been staying here with Sally and Wufei for a few weeks because I got sick. When Quatre and Trowa said they were coming to visit,” he paused. Violet eyes scrutinized him and he had to look down, “I never expected you to be here.”
Not caring about the other people around them, Duo pressed on, “Why would that matter?” he asked, his voice hard.
Heero gasped and looked up quickly, he suddenly felt very nervous and he didn't know what to say. Sally opened her mouth to speak, in an attempt to defend the younger brunette.
“Because he still cares about you.” The bitter voice echoed throughout the silent room and Duo's broad shoulders stiffed while his back straightened painfully. Wide blue eyes flew to the entrance of the breakfast room and Cameron dropped his waffle.
“Mutter?” he asked as all eyes turned to land on Hilde Schbeiker-Maxwell.
