16: dreaming on trains
The laptop beeps. It's a long way to travel but Heero doesn't mind. He packs his things away neatly; his laptop, two changes of clothes, a razor and a newspaper. He goes to the station and gets on the train. And then he sleeps.
And he dreams.
In his dream he sees a cactus, and its running in the desert.
"What are you doing?" Heero asks the cactus.
"Looking for water," replies the cactus.
"But you're a cactus," Heero points out, trying to be reasonable. It's rather difficult, apparently, to be reasonable with a cactus.
"What's that got to do with it?" The cactus sounds angry. It almost sounds like Wufei.
"Well, cacti don't need water." That was why they lived in the desert.
"Don't be an ass! All things need water! Geesh, next thing he'll be telling me I don't need sunlight…" And the cactus hurried off in it's pursuit of water, leaving Heero alone, in the middle of the desert.
The screech of the train wheels woke him and Heero got off. He was suddenly very thirsty, but he didn't want water.
