Chapter 2: A Glimpse Behind the Mask
Life with Duo was perfect. Since Heero's confession of love, Duo took it upon himself to take Heero out as often as possible. Over the next two weeks they did everything. They went out for dinner, often going to the movies afterwards. They went for walks in the park or on the beach and they often went hiking in the woods. Heero made Duo fancy dinners and made breakfast to take up to Duo before he got out of bed. Sometimes they cuddled together by the fire, sometimes reading, but more often then not, they would engage in a more intimate pastime.
One such evening had Heero curled against Duo, his head resting on the braided teens shoulder, with the other teens arms wrapped tightly around Heero's slight form.
“Heero?”
“Hmm?”
“What do you think about joining `Fei at the Preventers?”
“You mean work with him like we did during the war?”
“Yes.”
“Well, what would you like?”
“I think we should join him. I mean, what else is there for us to do together?”
“If you think it best, then I'll join.”
Bending down, Duo kissed Heero lightly on the lips. “Thanks Hee-chan.”

A few weeks later, Duo and Heero moved so that they could be closer to HQ. They bought a small house about 20 minutes away and since Wufei lived close to HQ as well, they lived 3 blocks away from their Chinese friend.
Their house had a small yard with a fence surrounding it. The house itself had 2 bedrooms, one that was used as a guest room, a kitchen/dining room and a bathroom. There was a room downstairs that divided into the laundry room and a training room.
As the weeks passed, Heero became more open with his emotions and he gave his trust to Duo, showing the extent of his love. Especially since Heero never trusted anyone else but himself.
Heero was partnered with Wufei, while Duo worked with field agents, because they were together and acknowledged their relationship. Since they both worked day shifts, unless they were called to do field work, Duo and Heero were able to enjoy their evenings together. Most of the time Heero was the first one home, so he tended to do most of the cooking, having dinner ready for when Duo got home.
Knowing that for the last couple of days, Duo had been working overtime, getting a squad ready for an upcoming mission, Heero thought that his lover needed a break, so he went home early to prepare a nice dinner for Duo.
After setting the table and making sure that the food was ready, Heero glanced at the clock. 6:20. Duo should have been home by now.
*Where is he?*
Knowing that sometimes Duo got caught up at work and didn't notice the time, Heero decided to wait a little longer before calling Duo's office.
Heero was still sitting on the couch 10 minutes later, staring out the window at the side of the room.
*I guess I should call Duo.*
Picking up the phone, Heero dialled Duo's office number, anxiously waiting for Duo to answer.
“Hello.”
Sighing in relief at the sound of Duo's voice, Heero relaxed.
“Hi Duo.”
“Heero? Why are you calling me?”
“Hn. Why didn't you call to tell me you'd be late?”
“What? What time is it?”
“6:30”
“Crap.”
“Duo? Do you know how long you're going to be? Dinner's ready.”
“Sorry Heero. I'm kinda busy right now. It'll probably be late tonight before I get home. Don't wait up for me, ok?”
“Why Duo? What's so important that you won't be here with me?”
“Listen Heero, I have to go. Like I said, don't wait up.”
“Wait Duo…”
But all that could be heard was the dial tone indicating that Duo had cut their conversation short. Heero stared down at the now silent phone in his hand.
*Duo always had time to spend with me. He's never pushed me away before, why now? What did I do? Did I do something to upset him?*
Putting the phone down, Heero slowly made his way to the kitchen, moving mechanically while he put the now cold food away. When the kitchen was once again clean, Heero went back into the living room and sat down on the couch. Waiting, wondering what he had done wrong, never noticing as darkness descended over the house, never really aware of the passing time.
The loud bang as the door crashed open, startle Heero out of his brooding thoughts.
“D-Duo?”
The braided teen stormed into the room, totally ignoring the shocked teen on the couch.
“Duo. What's wrong?”
“Why are you still up? I told you not to wait up for me!?”
Heero stared in shock at his lover. Duo never yelled at him. Never. What had he done wrong? He loved Duo, was he not supposed to be up to welcome his lover home, no matter what the time was?
Heero watched Duo dejectedly through his messy brown bangs.
“….”
Duo continued to glare, not even bothering to hug Heero, as he usually would have when he got home.
“Are you hungry? I could always heat dinner up for you.”
“No.”
“Oh. Ok”
Turning away from his distressed lover, Duo headed to the bedroom. Dazed, all Heero was able to do was stare at Duo's retreating figure as he left the room.
*What did I do? What Duo? Please…*
