THE CONSEQUENCES OF A LOVE LOST
A few days later Heero returned to work, he still lived in the same house as Duo, though they never really saw or spoke to each other. Duo almost never came home for dinner, usually staying out until three or four in the morning. Heero made himself go to bed before Duo got home, although he never slept until he knew that Duo was back.
Duo never touched Heero or welcomed his presence, instead he pushed the blue-eyed boy away, which only added to the depression that was building steadily within Heero.
Walking into his office, Heero didn't bother to greet Duo as he sat down at his desk. A tense silence settled over the office as the day progressed. If anyone spoke it only dealt with work or Duo snapped insults at his partner when he failed to respond.
Finished with his report, Heero stood.
"I'm going for lunch."
Without waiting for Duo's reply, Heero left the office, heading in the direction of Wufei's office.
"Wufei?"
Wufei looked up from his computer to see a very tired looking Heero. Nodding in acknowledgment, Wufei tried to keep the shock out of his voice. His friend looked like he hadn't been resting on his time off and was looking more worn out then he'd ever seen him. Even more so than during the war.
"Heero. What can I do for you?"
"I'm going out to get lunch. Do you want to join me?"
Again Wufei was surprised. Heero rarely sought out anyone's company.
"Sure."
Looking outside, Wufei noticed that it had started to rain.
"Let me get my jacket then we'll go get yours on the way out."
Walking silently side by side, the two preventers made their way back to Heero's office. They were surprised to see the door closed, considering they never closed it during the day.
However since it was Heero's office as well as Duo's, Heero didn't bother to knock before entering the room.
What he saw upon entering the room shattered Heero's already broken heart to pieces. His koi, his lover had betrayed him. He had suspected something was up when Duo never got home till the early morning, but he never actually believed it.
There was Duo passionately kissing a light haired man who was pressed against the desk. It was quite obvious who was in control, as Duo ran his hand down in between their bodies, squeezing the other man's cock.
They were so caught up in their own passion, that they failed to notice the two shocked figures standing in the doorway.
"MAXWELL! How can you be so dishonorable?!"
Startled, Duo spun around. "Well damn!"
Moving further into the room, Heero's blue eyes locked with violet.
"Duo, What are you doing? How long has this been going on?"
Smirking Duo turned, pulling the blond back into his embrace.
"Oh I don't know, four or five months, give or take a few days."
Seeing the hurt flash in Heero's eyes, Duo's own eyes hardened.
"What? Did you think that I really loved you? You've got to be kidding me. It was just for the sex, always has been and you couldn't get enough of it. You're nothing but a slut willing to do anything for me, just to get me between your legs."
Heero stood stock still as Duo repeated some of the things that had been running through his head for the last couple of days.
"Besides what would you know about love. You're a cold, unfeeling solider, unable to feel or understand emotions. You're just a tainted, used up piece of trash, whom I'm repulsed by. Why do you think I haven't touched you for weeks? Why do you think I have pushed you away? You're worthless, and not worth my time or attention."
When Duo stopped speaking Heero's face closed up, refusing to allow Duo to see how much his words had hurt him.
He's right. I'm worthless
Wufei couldn't believe that this person speaking so hatefully towards Heero was the same boy he'd been friends with in the past.
Who is he? He is no longer the Honorable man I once fought beside.
Pulling the blonds' face towards his, Duo kissed him deeply.
"Now leave us Heero."
Looking sullenly at Wufei, Heero strode out the door, down the hallway and into the frigid rain, not noticing how cold it had become.
Wufei could no longer stand to be in the same room as Duo, and left silently. Wufei pulled out his cell phone, dialing Quatre's number.
"Hello, Quatre speaking."
"Hey Quatre. I need your help"
"What is it Wufei?"
"We need to find Heero. Duo's betrayed him. I don't know what he's going to do, but I definitely didn't like the look in his eyes when he left the building."
"What? Of course we'll come help, though I don't know how much help I'll be. After feeling a flash of intense pain from Heero a few days ago, I haven't felt a thing from him. He's closed himself off, and I can't read his emotions."
"That's fine. He just left the building, maybe I can catch up to him, but if not we're going to have to figure out where he could have gone."
"Okay, Trowa and I'll be there in about twenty minutes."
"Okay, if I couldn't catch him, I'll meet you at the front doors."
"K."
A few hours later they were still searching, they decided to head back to Heero's house. It was possible that he'd gone back after a while.
The house was still dark, no lights were on, and everything seemed to stand still. Quatre rushed up to the door, suddenly scared.
Knocking briefly, they waited in tense silence, but no one came to answer. Again they knocked.
"Heero? Heero are you in there?"
Suddenly, Quatre doubled over in pain. Trowa reached to catch his lover.
"Quatre, what wrong?"
Gasping, Quatre clung to Trowa."We...need ...to ..get ..in there.....NOW!"
Hearing the panic in Quatre's voice, Wufei kicked the door in.
The smell of blood was strong, immediately the others spanned out to search the house.
What they saw was a shock to them all. Amidst bottles and cans, was their friend. Blood pouring from his wrists on the floor.
"Oh Heero!"

----------------------------------------------
And so now their long time friend and protector was dead, his funeral coming to a close. Slowly the mourners left the cemetery, all making their way to Quatre's house where the memorial gathering was being held.
Once the cemetery was once again deserted, a dark clad figure stepped out of the shadows, kneeling beside Heero's grave. Duo gently placed a rose on the freshly dug dirt.
"Heero. I'm sorry. I know I don't deserve to say farewell, but I had to. I had to come. I never, ever meant to hurt the way I did, and never meant to make you suffer. I thought I loved you. Maybe I did, but somewhere along the way I lost sight of who I was, and why I cared for you. I'm the one who is worthless and undeserving of what you gave to me. But I guess it's to late for me to apologize. I'm sorry, I'm the reason you're dead. Please. I hope that wherever you are now, you have found peace."
Standing, Duo slowly left the cemetery, fading into the crowd of people on the streets, disappearing from the lives of the remaining Gundam pilots forever.
Wufei and his lover Zechs visited Quatre and Trowa often. They took comfort in each other's friendship and love. Though the pain of loosing two of their own family was always present in their hearts.
They never failed to visit Heero's grave, yet since the night of Heero's death the others often felt as though their protector continued to keep an eye on them, never allowing harm to befall them
again.
