Chapter 4

It was funny how life worked. If I'd been told the person I'd give my heart to would be Dorothy I would have scoffed. But I have. I was in love and I knew she felt the same. We longer denied our feelings. Well, at least I didn't. Dorothy was still stubborn. I'm sure her very first word was No. She probably smirked before she could even crawl. I love her just the same, but life was never exactly fair to Dorothy. Not fair at all...

**********

Dorothy hid a smile as she watched Quatre 'attempt' to put up her Christmas tree in the den. Poor thing struggled under the weight of a fir tree twice his size. She decided to be kind and not mention he had not put it up right, again. When it fell over three times, he finally begged for assistance. He didn't even celebrate Christmas. But he did this just for her. Their faiths were completely different, but the idealogy was pretty much the same.

"I'm finished." Quatre announced, flushed and out of breath. Wearing the blue sweater she'd gotten him, he looked adorable. And those snug fitting jeans didn't hurt either.

He flopped down in the middle of the couch and pulled her down beside him. He had done a pretty nice job of it too. Okay, so the tree leaned slightly to the left, but it was still a nice effort.

"It's beautiful. Thank you." Dorothy smiled in gratitude.

Quatre smiled back, relieved to lighten her spirits. He kissed her lightly on her forehead and leaned back to gaze at her. Clothed in a green satin dress, she looked all Christmasy. Another Dorothism, he called them. Seeing each other exclusively for the past seven months, he felt more connected with her moods. As much as she enjoyed the holiday's, he knew it also depressed her because of her mother.

Dorothy came and put her arm around his waist and hugged him tight. No words were needed. They knew each other too well.

**********

Fredricka falsely smiled to her 'friends' as she entered the country club entrance for their annual Christmas celebration. She enjoyed knowing she was the best dressed, slimmest and youngest looking woman there. Her new gentleman caller on her arm, Robert Missla was a younger man with a lot of money. Probably got a thrill over dating an older woman. Whatever the reason, she knew the other women there were gnashing their bonded teeth in envy.

Sitting down at their assigned table, Fredricka nodded to her friend Jillian and her husband, who were sharing their table.

"Fredricka, you look beautiful." Jillian smiled, running her cool blue eyes over Fredricka's tight red silk ankle length dress.

"Thank you, Jillian. The same to you, dear." Fredricka smugly said. Not meaning a word, she inwardly smirked seeing how her friend managed to squeeze her larger frame into her tight fitting silver dress.

*Thank God for girdles, huh Jilly.* Fredricka thought, taking a sip of her wine.

"And how's Dorothy, Fredricka? When will she be marrying the Winner boy?" Jillian coyly asked.

*Bitch.* Fredricka managed to continue smiling at the question. Her friends took much pleasure asking about Dorothy and Quatre's relationship. Bitches. Most knew there was no warm feelings between the mother and daughter. She hated not knowing what was going on. If only the brat had not walked in on her and the good Doctor. Her plans had been ruined and now Dorothy wanted absolutely nothing to do with her. She needed money! Her financial situation was becoming desperate. War was no longer the way of life for the Catalona's and the family fortune made from war was dwindling. She wouldn't end up poor! Never.

When a sudden idea came across her mind she frowned and immediately pushed it aside. But, it came back instantly. She couldn't do that? Could she? Thinking about her present situation...maybe she could.

She'd pay that demon spawn back one way or another and get a fortune from it. Count on it.

***********

"Chloe, get that out of your mouth. Dorothy will skin me alive if you get sick." Quatre mumbled to the kitten as she continued gnawing on a piece of red wrapping paper. Ignoring him, she played with her new toy.

Sending Dorothy away while he wrapped her presents, he sat on her bed...their bed and finished wrapping the last of her gifts. His little helper meanwhile rolled on the floor in paper scraps, meowing softly.

Although quite extravagant, the gifts were given out of love. Clothing, jewelry and Dorothy's secret passion. An avid reader, she was a fan of historical novels. A signature and first addition by her favorite author would be a nice surprise.

A loud hacking sound quickly caught Quatre's attention. Chloe was gagging or whatever the heck cats do on the off white persian throw rug at the end of the bed.

"Chloe! Ew, I told you not to eat the wrapping paper." Quatre said, picking up the fluffy gray kitten in his arms. Hearing her breathing heavily, he stroked her fur to calm her down. Looking down at the wet, brownish mass on the rug, he sighed.

"Guess I'll be getting her a new rug for Christmas too."

***********

Finally Christmas arrived four days later at Dorothy's. Although the weren't 'officially' living together, Quatre spent most of his nights there when he could. In fact in the past months, he'd only slept away from home because of business a total of six times.

It was kind of funny when people wanting to talk to Quatre automatically called over to Dorothy's line.

It was quite amazing how fast a house could be wrecked. Opened presents littered the floor. Wrapping paper and bows lay everywhere. And Chloe was having a field day rolling around on top of it.

"So did you have a nice Christmas?" Relena smiled through the vid-phone screen. Heero quietly sat behind her on the bed.

Smirking at her friends glowing face, she nodded. Heero must have given her one hell of a gift to put that smile on her face.

"Okay, Relena why the smile? Eat her canary or something?" Dorothy questioned. Quatre waved to her as he picked up discarded boxes off the den floor.

"Or something. I'm pregnant, Dorothy." Relena happily announced.

"What?"

Hearing Quatre exclaim in the background, she knew he'd heard her as clearly as she had. Turning back to the screen, she shared her friends joy. Relena deserved some happiness after all she'd endured. The two women chatted back and forth about the new event. Quatre joined in as they found out Relena was four and a half months along. Even Heero was more animated as he and Relena discussed their baby.

"I'll let you two go. Have to make my rounds and tell everyone. Merry Christmas you two. Your gifts are being delivered. Bye." Relena cheerfully smiled as Heero nodded goodbye.

When the line went blank, Quatre was grinning ear to ear. "Can you believe it? Heero's the first of us five to be a father. Imagine that?"

"Yeah. Scary. How much you want to bet the kids first word is 'hn'?" Dorothy grinned. When he laughed, she pulled him close and kissed him on the lips.

They shared a passionate kiss for a few minutes before Quatre pulled away. Abruptly standing up, he reached down and grabbed her arm and pulled her up next to him. Still in their nightclothes, he brought her close to him.

"I loved all of my gifts, Dorothy. But you haven't given me what I want the most." Quatre said.

Frowning, Dorothy looked at him in curiosity. He quickly picked her up in his arms and headed out of the den.

"How about we work on that present now, huh?" Quatre wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, making her laugh and catch on quickly. She put her arms around his shoulders as he marched back to their bedroom.

"Yeah, let's do that." Dorothy chuckled as he slammed the door with his foot.

**********

"Look, I don't have all day. Are you serious about this or not?"

"Yes. Do it."

"Painless or do you want 'er to suffer?"

"D-Do it quickly. I don't care."

"My money please?"

"Here. Now get this done quickly. And make sure it's not traced back to me."
**********

Following the holidays, Quatre went back to work and Dorothy went back to her job. Peace firmly established, Dorothy surprised everyone with her position at ESUN. She was in a way a freelance diplomat in Relena's administration. And she was good at it. Dorothy a worker for peace? It sort of fit.

Dropping a folder in her attache case, Dorothy prepared for home. Hopefully Quatre would be home before she arrived.

"You heading out Dorothy?" Duo Maxwell asked from the office doorway.

"Yeah, I'm exhausted." she replied, surprised he was even still at work.

A Preventer along with his partner Hilde, on and off the field, Duo was always the last to arrive and the first to leave. He hated office work and much preferred to be out on a dangerous assignment. He never even bothered to dress in the clothing required of all Preventers. He always dressed in his black priest get up. Constantly cheerful, he made everyone's days fun and interesting. Especially for Une. Just working an hour with Duo always ended with her cursing him out in her native language or reaching for her gun. It was never a boring day.

"I'll walk you to your car." Duo said, flipping his thick braid over his shoulder.

"No thanks. I think I've mastered that whole opening and closing the car door. Thanks." Dorothy smirked, heading towards the door.

"Dorothy, I-"

"Duo, I don't need your protection. It's just a couple flights downstairs to my car." she said, locking her office door.

"Still, it's late. Quatre would kill me if I didn't see to your safety." he said. Following beside her, they walked to the elevators.

"Fine. You never do this to Sally or Une." Dorothy said. They both stepped inside and she hit the basement number.

"Sally has Wufei constantly at her back and Une...hell, I'd pity any man trying to rob her!" Duo said, shuddering.

Chuckling, Dorothy silently agreed. That was one woman not to mess with. She told Duo to stay in the elevator as she waved him off. Climbing inside her car and shutting the door, she started her engine. But it wouldn't start! Trying four times, she gave up in frustration.

"Damn. Guess, I'll have to catch a ride." Dorothy groaned, hitting her steering wheel with her right fist.

Getting out, she jerked when she heard a noise in the parking garage. Looking around, she saw only cars upon cars but no one else. Just cars and a poorly lighted garage. Dorothy received such a feeling of unease came over her, she quickly locked her doors.

Mentally cursing herself, she walked briskly back to the elevators. The sound of running footsteps behind her made her nervous and-

Dorothy cried out in pain as a force slammed into the back of her skull. The pain was horrible as she staggered about in confusion. Falling to her knees, she felt blood drip down the back of her neck. The warm feel of it upon her skin was making her nauseous. Blinking rapidly, she tried to focus her vision. Black, red, white..colors swirled all around her. The sound of footsteps behind her frightened her and made her tense up.

"H-Help! Help me!" Dorothy managed to scream, fear bringing forth a loud cry from her lips. Even as her vision swam, she weakly crawled to the elevators.

"Don't think so, bitch." the attacker laughed as he slammed the pipe brutally against the back of her already bloody head. The loud cracking sound of metal striking bone echoed in the garage. Blood flew as she cried for mercy, still trying to crawl to safety.

He stood back and watched in amazement as she stayed conscious. Even though he felt a smidgen of respect for her, a job was a job. He allowed her to crawl a few steps before grabbing her left leg and dragging her back. Her blood smeared all across her face and clothing, streaked the pavement floor as he pulled her to him.

"No-why? W-Why?" Dorothy mumbled as she worked to stay awake. Her head was on fire! The pounding in her ears was to much too bare. All she wanted to do was sleep. She blinked at him in confusion as she tried to see his face. But all she saw was darkness.

"Sorry girl. I'll make this quick." he said, lifting the bloody pipe high over her head.

Four shoots rang out in rapid concession as the attacker jerked from the force of the bullets. He slammed to the floor, instantly dead. The clang of the pipe hitting the floor made Dorothy jerk in fear.

She couldn't see anything but darkness. She knew then she would die here in this basement...alone.

"Q-Quatre?" Dorothy said, before falling into blissful sleep.
"Dorothy?!" Duo screamed, running to her side with Hilde not far behind him.

***********

"Mrs. Gallieo, could you see if that fax from the L.Miller Corporation is in yet?" Quatre asked his office assistant. Pushing the stacks and stacks of paper work aside, he picked up his cup of Peppermint tea.

She nodded and headed back to her office, closing the door behind. He would be leaving soon for home. He liked to beat Dorothy home. There was a running joke between them that whomever got home first had to cook. Tasting Dorothy's cooking once, he made sure to get home first... always.

Chuckling to himself, Quatre gasped suddenly as a fierce pain hit him in the chest.

*What the?* An agonizing pain struck him, reminding him of the time Heero had been hurt in battle. He'd felt his pain, but this pain was ten times worse. What was wrong? He was too young for a heart attack?!

Instantly it hit him...DOROTHY?!

Well, what did you think? Sorry if it was brutal. My girl Dorothy is in for a time. Thanks for all the nice reviews. See what happens next, okay? Bye!
