Black

Not many knew her the way I did. She only allowed them to see the tough side. They only saw Nataku. I saw Meiran. I saw the girl behind the warrior, because she allowed me to.

I saw how at night she curled into a ball trying to ward off the nightmares, or maybe just reality. She would laugh like there was no tomorrow. It wasn't a tiny polite laugh like most girls had. It was a loud laugh that made people want to smile along with her. She didn't laugh nearly enough.

She used to complain about how black was so boring. How every Chinese person had black hair and black eyes and it wasn't unique. She had grown to hate the color she said. She said that everyone who had black hair and eyes was boring looking.

Yet every chance she got, she looked deep into my eyes, staring at them with love. Like my eyes were beautiful. Or maybe she was looking past my eyes and inside of me. And she was always playing with my hair because I left it down. Even though it was black like every other person who was Chinese, she said it was beautiful.

At night when she thought I was asleep, she run her fingers through my hair and caressed my cheek before cuddling up to me and whispering quietly, "Beautiful."

And when I knew she was asleep I'd turn to her and gather her in my arms.

"Not nearly as beautiful as you."
