Broken Glass

`Chapter One - Eyes of Innocence`

The room was filled with darkness, only a single desk and chair was identifiable in the seeming office room. The chair turned slowly around, the man sitting still couldn't be seen by the shadows that took on his every detail. "Send in Heero Yuy." He said grimly to the male at his side. And so he bowed his head, and trotted away to find the one he needed.

Slowly two now emerged through the thick doors. Noisily they closed behind the two lanky men, and walking soundlessly to the ebon desk was the one that was requested. "Another mission, sir?" He inquired.

Wrinkled hands of the elder folded upon the glossy table, he nodded briefly to the male before him. Eyes darting to his side as the other went to reclaim it. A soft breath emitted from softly parted lips, "Yes. Here is your assignment, step closer."

And so the boy did, a gloved hand reaching out to take the extended paper. Eyes, cold and never showing a single emotion, merely waited for more instructions. "Mr. Darlian." He read the paper aloud, and he saw his leader nod, therefore stepped back and waited once more.

"He lives in the Mansion in the out skirts of town. You have been there times before, I trust it won't be hard to find." He waited for a nod that curtly came. "Kill him as quickly as you can, he is a great threat to our organization."

"Yes sir." He responded, if that was all he needed to know, he was forbidden to ask anymore. He bowed and stepped away from him, turning upon his heel and leaving the room in silence. Silent as death and liquid as shadow, that was Heero Yuy…

Running swiftly as wind he ran down the dirtied streets of L2 colony. The war seemed to have done its deeds to the space colonies. Earth was already gone in this rough time. Assassins were for hire, attempting to take down the political members or those of threats to their ideals. Everyone thought they were right… But, not him, and he didn't mind his 'job' as soul taker. So, a fluid as water he ran down the streets, eyes darting to anything in the midnight air. He grew up this way, and everything was an enemy to him, orders were his only life. Death was all he knew… Reflected in emotionless pools was the home he was requested to 'visit'. And so, his pace slowed, and he padded casually to the front. Easily scaling the gates and hiding from cameras, it was his life, he would never be caught… He couldn't afford to, and therefore he rushed once again. Leaping the few stairs and began his work on the mansion's front lock. A silent 'click' issued and the lock was gone, the door creeped open, a smirk almost seen upon his lips. The faint moonlight barely touching his dark form as he entered the home. Doors shut absently behind him as he made his way up the spiraling steps of the front staircase. Slowly the male padded down the hallway. A slip of black paper the only thing in his grasp. The sound of his shoes made a soft, very faint noise upon the shimmering marble below him. Eyes, cold as sea and just as deep… Filled with only hate and visions of deaths. This boy had nothing to live for, and only death to give. The onyx trench coat he wore covered anything from sight, the faint breeze that passed him, ruffling the thick flaps of coat. Suddenly, he stopped; the faint squeak of shoes vanquished and eyes set coldly upon the wood door next to him. Slowly his tense body turned to his right, staring fully at the door. A brief breath was given from his pursed lips, a matching black gun being pulled from the depths of his numerous pockets. He clicked it silently into place, the sound of death… The slip of paper falling uselessly to the ground, a soul ready to depart… And the door swung open, death was coming… A man inside, barely able to turn, not even able to scream, the bullet fired. Piercing his skull instantly, and the body fell to the ground. Crimson sea of blood tainting the tiles below. The sound issued before set triggers to others in the mansion. Before they knew what happened, the male was gone, leaving the single paper behind.

"What was that?" He said urgently, looking to the door.

"What was what, sir Quatre?" A young woman asked, looking worriedly to the blonde.

"I- it was a gun shot." He leaped from his chair, but another's hand stopped him.

"Don't worry, that was Duo's and Wufei's area… They can handle it." The brunette commented, his comrade sitting back in his chair. He frowned at his worried looks, as well as the conflict inside himself. He wanted, just as much as he, to go and check on what happened… But he knew he shouldn't leave the princess.

"Please, could you please tell me?" She said softly, coming from her own chair and going to rest by the two men.

"Don't worry, Duo and Chang will report back on details." The brunette said matter-of-factly.

She bowed her head in defeat to him. Walking back to where she came, staring absently out her bay window. The only form of light in the room was the gentle beams of moonlight. 'I want to know what they know… It didn't sound too important.' She thought absently, placing a pale hand to the glass. Forehead touching the cool surface as her emotion filled eyes stared blankly at the front of her home. 'What was?' She gasped, watching as a lone figure ran across her lawn. All you could identify it by, would be a moving shadow… Her gasp alarmed the others in the room however…

"What is it, Miss Darlian?" The Arabian asked urgently to her, about to stand from his chair when her voice hit the air.

"I thought I saw something…" The girl mumbled.

"Like what?" He tried asking again.

"It was like a shadow… Simply a shadow in the night." She mumbled once again. They exchanged glances in nervous fashion. They both understood now what had happened moments before. All the more reason to stay and protect the princess, and so they stayed, awaiting the horrid news to come…

~

Walking silently down the halls the shot pierced the nightly air. "That was…Where did it come from?!" The braided one began to panic, shooting urgently down the halls to find the source.

"Wait for me…" An angered one called behind him, matching speed as both drew their weapons. One a Gun, another a katana.

The one behind watched as his pace slowed. Eyes darting to where he look, the simple black square upon the marble tile. "Hey…this is…" One-stepped forth, taking the paper in a palm. "Mr. Darlian." He mumbled, that was all the paper said, in bold silver letters, plain as day yet dark as night. Eyes of mysterious blue were puzzled, "An Assassin."

"What was your first clue, Maxwell?" The Chinese man said irritably. "You must tell her." He said softly, cold eyes staring at the body before them.

"Where was the ones protecting him?" He growled slightly at the other's lack of emotion.

He shrugged simply, casting his piercing gaze to the boy near him. "It doesn't matter now, he's dead, let's clean up the body."

"What about the princess?" He said, glancing down the dark corridor.

He snorted, "She has others to protect her. Besides, I doubt he'll be back, at least not tonight."

"Your right." He spat back to him, looking to the body of the male. He sighed softly, "For once in my life, I would like to see something other than death."

"Then take another job." That statement went by without notice. The hurt in the other's eyes was present, but they moved on. Ignoring any other speech they might have wished to spill. Each taking a side they lifted the body, slowly taking it away, down the winding halls of the Darlian's mansion. "We'll examine down in the main room." He finally stated, eyeing to see if Duo paid notice. He nodded, and so the conversation dropped as it once did. He had to admit, he never was used to his comrade being so quiet, but he let it pass, after all they were carrying a dead body…

And so the steel door of the 'Main Room' was kicked open by the braided boy. 'Main Room' basically meant a morgue now, since so many of the mansion's tenants were being killed. "Alright, let's set it on the table." He said simply, both hoisting the corpse upon the table. And so, they locked the metal door, another sigh emitted from the American, "You know we left a trail throughout the whole place."

"We'll just clean it up before the others wake up then." He said a solution, eyes already on the wound of the bullet. "It was only one bullet."

"What?" He mumbled, walking back over, attempting to ignore the pooling blood in the room, as well as the stench that became to overwhelm it.

"One bullet, clean and precise I may add." He said simply. Pointing a gloved finger to his forehead, a single hole there. He slowly moved the body's head up, to show the exit hole. "It was done quickly, yet with such aim, this is no ordinary assassin." He grumbled angrily. "He's finely trained to have one quick shot, and be out of here without any notice what so ever."

"Damn, that's just perfect. You think he'll go after Relena?" He growled back to him.

He shook his head, merely in thought, "Probably, he killed off many in this mansion… And right now he's going down the family line. Relena would be next in charge since her mother died, therefore it wouldn't surprise me."

"So, what are we gonna do?" He said angrily as well, glaring down at the dead man.

A hand grabbed the side of the snow-white sheet, bringing it up to cover the male. He slammed it in the wall case, sealing him forever, "Protect her that's what, and protecting her means we need to be ready for anything."

He nodded once, "Yes, I know." Both left the room, following the faint glimmering of scarlet as they neared the spiraling stairs. "You have any idea who this guy might be?"

"I have no clue as of yet. We need to do research, and that just might mean we'll need to set up a trap." He explained.

"A trap?" He blinked, casting confused eyes to the one next to him. Walking silently down the hall now, almost reaching the young woman's room.

"We will talk about this more with the others, when they are all present." With that Chang let the oaken door swing open to reveal the three inside. He lifted a black gloved hand, issuing that he will explain later to Quatre and Trowa… So, they kept silent, and the eyes turned to the lone woman by the window side.

"Princess Relena, you are still awake?" The braided brunette said in shock to her.

"The noise woke me up. Will you be so kind as to tell me what that noise was? Sir Trowa, and Sir Quatre will not tell me." She said patiently.

"That is only for us to know, I am sorry. You will find out from the others in the morning." Wufei informed her.

She sighed, looking down to her feet, "I see then."

"I am sorry, Miss Darlian, please get some rest. We will inform you in the morning." The blonde stated, bowing to her briefly before he left the room. The three bowed and left right after him. They left the woman alone, and that night, she didn't sleep one bit, just stared blankly out her bedroom window…

~

"So, this is all so confusing." Everyone had been caught up with each other's stories. All sitting soundly outside her room door.

"It is, but this is what we have to work with. This man isn't an ordinary one, to do something so quick. Especially taking into account that Chang and Duo were right down the hall. They even ran to Mr. Darlian's side and still, were not in time enough to see the man leaving. Not even a trace of him there…" Quatre said, puzzled.

"Also, Relena stated she saw a shadow running through the yard." The brunette stated, adding to their clues.

"And that would have been a mere five minutes after the shot, perhaps even less then we think." The Chinese guard added.

"Ah, let's just deal with all this in the morning. Get some rest, guys." The braided boy said irritably, leaning back against the wall. The rest did as well, nodding in unison.

"Yes, we do need some rest… The princess will need answers by morning." Quatre said matter-of-factly. And with that being the last sentence of the night, the small group fell asleep.

~

"You have done your mission well I see. He was dead in less time then you had to take to arrive." The dark man stated.

He merely nodded, "I am glad my work pleases you." He said, his tone unchanging and keeping that of monotone stature.

He chuckled grimly to the silent boy. "I have one more assignment for you, it shall be done after Darlian is buried, do you hear?" His tone differed now, only more it grew that of seriousness.

"Yes, sir." He bowed to him once more and listened intently.

"Good, now, it is at the same estate. Match their movements, but don't let them know where you are. You may however, show yourself after the deed is done." He stated, a hand extending once more with a folded paper.

He went to retrieve it. "Relena Darlian." He mumbled, eyeing the silver letters then his eyes looked up once more.

"The daughter of the one you killed. She is now able to rule the kingdom. Kill her at then time I requested, don't be off, and leave as soon as you can. She is guarded much more heavily then the one before." He informed him.

"Yes, sir." He stated curtly, turning once more on his heel. Ready to leave the room when another's voice stopped him, this time it wasn't his boss's.

"Heero, this is very important, don't screw up." She shouted to him.

"Yes, Miss Hilde." He grumbled, casting a playful glance behind to the woman next to the male. And then, he left the now quiet room, the doors the only noise that filled the area. Once again the boy took refuge in darkness, and padded once more to the home he visited only hours before…

~

Bright blue eyes stared hopelessly at the tombstone in front of her. The cold marble letters glaring back to her, 'Darlian - Rest in peace.' She didn't bother to read the rest, it was all so clear, and this was reality. Eyes shimmer with unfallen tears, which she refused to spill. She needed to take the colony on her back; she needed to be strong now. A soft sigh left her gently painted lips, she shouldn't have to have this burden, but life wasn't always fair. A pale hand reaching out to touch the gentle sprigs of lilac, resting upon freshly packed soil. '…Father.' She thought sadly, golden bangs masking her eyes now.

"I am sorry, Miss Darlian." Were the only comforting words she would receive of the Chinese guard. He was issuing, she knew, from everyone in the mansion. She would receive no pity, no comfort, and just a heavy deed of taking on her father's role.

"I know, it's alright Mr. Wufei." She mumbled softly. "Death always take their tolls on people, it's the way of life after all." And that was all she wished to say to this dark haired man. He understood the new silence, and therefore kept silent. Being her guard however, he couldn't leave her alone right now. Not, in such a desperate time as this one.

Prussian blue gaze was watching silently from the nearby trees. A gun being polished absently in his taunt grip. He sighed once more, as he often did before he brang himself to fire the final shot. Eyes narrowing to the one beside her, but he took him as no threat. All the male was armed with was a blade, useless when fighting a guns man. He shook his head, ruffling the messy locks of chocolate. And so, he focussed once more, and then he was spotted. He blinked, one brief second off his usual time of death. The woman had turned as if knowing to him, bright eyes, filled with sorrow. He knew he was the cause of her pain, but he was going to end it, and there she was, staring at him as if he knew all her answers. He growled, frustrated with this staring, and so the gun cocked back and fired the, should be finishing blow. Ignoring as the male beside drew his blade. The glint of silver blinding him briefly as he leaped from his tree perch. He would be too late, and so he grinned to him, but casualties were not what his boss needed. And so, he planned to leave, but something unexpected happened…
