Christmas Gifts Chapter 4: A Shooting Star
"Maxwell, have you finished those reports I gave to you earlier," Lady Une ordered, more than asked. This woman, with her hair in two braded buns, was Duo's scary boss. It wasn't wise to upset her, but luckily for the braded boy, he had done his work. Handing over a disk, he waited for her to leave with it, before taking a nap.
He knew her schedual very well, and was able to sleep for a full two hours before having to wake up again. Starting to drift off into lala land, a sudden tapping on his desk woke him up. Glaring, he found it to be Noin, his second boss, though she couldn't really do anything to him.
"May I help you," he asked casually.
"Yes. Nothing to do with business, but something personal," the blue-haired woman said indifferently. Nodding, Duo waited for her to continue with, "Have you heard the news? About the deaths of...?"
"Yes, I have. Were you close to one of them?" He had forgotten, they attended school together as well, and so did Une. /What a small world, / he thought to himself.
"I was, to the older of the two, Zechs. He was very close to me, but that's not the point. Do you remember Relena Peacecraft," Noin continued.
"Yeah, she's practically a celebrity now," Duo replied, trying to hide his slight jealousy of the girl, but failing. She was the one person that really stood in the way of the braded boy's happiness, because she was the one dating Heero in high school. If they weren't together, he might've stood a chance.
"Well, Zechs was really her brother, Millardo, and seeing as Heero was her boyfriend, well, you can pretty much assume how she feels right now," the blue-haired woman finally finished. She then handed over an envelope. Inside, was an invitation to the funerals of both men, and it allowed him to bring one guest.
"Your brother was a friend of Heero's, am I right? If so, he should be the guest you bring along with you," Noin added, and then left the braded boy to his thoughts. /Why would Relena, of all people, want me to be there? /
To make matters worse, the funeral was going to be held on Christmas Eve, which meant Duo would have to cancel his dinner reservations with Hilde. Being a good friend, she understood, and tried to mollify him with comforting words.
Then there was his brother Trowa, who didn't object to attending, but seemed to be struggling emotionally. Perhaps Heero and him were closer than Duo had thought?
"So, what did you have to cancel for this," the braded boy asked casually, tying his brother's tye. A little unsure, and sighing, the green-eyed boy answered with, "A party at the zoo. Not that I mind."
"Heh, I gave up dinner with Hilde. You remember her," the elder of the two then said, finished with what he was doing. Not receiving a response, he added, "We were going to eat Italian."
An uncomfortable silence fell between the two, and it was obvious they wanted to say something, but didn't know quite what to say. But they stayed quiet, until they were in the middle of driving to the church.
"Duo, I'm...I'm sorry," Trowa said softly.
"For what? He was your friend. He had nothing to do with me, so don't be sorry," the other stated quickly, keeping his sights on the road ahead of them.
"It's not just that Duo, I mean, what about yesterday, on the phone? You're not mad," the green-eyed boy asked again.
"Trowa, right now is not the time to discuss this, but to satisfy your question, no, I'm not mad." With that said, all was quiet again, and they arrived at the church. It took a while to park though, for a lot of people were going to attend. Many they did not recognize, and the braded boy began to wonder as to why they were really invited. Did she intend to embarrass them, or rub something in their face?
Either way they were now inside of the church, and like everyone else, they walked upto each coffin, and gave their respects. Zechs, or Millardo, looked very dignified, and it was obvious he was from a royal family. Heero, though dressed in fine rich clothing, appeared more as a servant than anything else. /I wonder if he had proposed to that girl, and if this was Zechs's way of having him earn his respect? No, I don't think he'd do that. Would he, / Duo began to wonder. He wanted to know how close the Japanese boy was to this girl.
/That suit is not Heero at all. If he really had his way, he'd have his body burned, and his ashes thrown out to sea. He wouldn't want to be on display to these complete strangers in which he resents, or at least...that's what the Heero I know would want, / Trowa thought to himself, becoming a little angry with the whole ordeal, though mainly at himself for losing contact with his friend.
Would it have really made a difference if he had kept in contact with him? He then began to regret his decision to order his brother a cat-boy likeness of Heero. What if it was a mistake? What if his brother becomes heart-broken, or angry with him? There were so many questions going through his mind, until he saw a familar looking blonde.
"Duo, stay in front of me, please." Confused, the braded boy asked, "What? Hiding from someone?"
"You see that blonde boy, over there. I had met him before, and he makes me really nervous," Trowa admitted.
"Oh, as in intimidating nervous, or 'I don't want to embarrass myself,' nervous," the elder of the two asked, smiling softly.
"The second one. Um...maybe we should go all ready," the younger sibling said quickly, keeping a very wary eye on the Arabian. Deciding he was tired of being there anyway, Duo started to lead his brother outside of the church. Only a certain girl stopped them.
"Duo, Trowa! I'm so glad you could make it," Relena said, wiping away her tears. Not wanting to appear harsh, the braded boy replied, in a formal way which was rare for him to use, "I am very sorry for your loss. Though I cannot imagine the pain you are going through."
"Oh, thank you. I know he was a very dear friend of yours as well. Would the two of you follow me please? I'd like to speak with you in private," she then asked, starting to walk outside of the church. /Well, at least she won't embarrass us in front of too many people, / Duo then thought, but followed, his brother doing the same. However, as they were walking, a certain pair of aqua-colored eyes had spotted them. This was the last place he expected to meet him, but he was very glad indeed to be able to. Though first, he'd have to finish his conversations with Noin and Dorothy.
Outside, on a concrete bench, Relena had the two brothers sit on each side of her, and then stated, "There is something I've been wanting to ask you both, more so towards Trowa, but I never got a chance to, because I didn't have a way to contact you."
"What is your question," the braded boy responded, noticing his brother had become very quiet.
"Why did you lose contact with Heero? He always held you in the highest spirit, and would talk of you two, all the time, or at least, whenever he did speak to me."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lose contact with him. It just seemed to happen. We both went to different universities, and got different jobs. I made new friends, and assumed he did as well. I didn't think our relationship meant that much to him. If I had--"
"You didn't think your friendship meant that much to him?!? How can you think that! You two were very close, and I do mean very close, by the end of senior year. How can you lose touch," Relena started to accuse.
"Excuse me, I don't like your yelling at my brother. He said he was sorry, and didn't mean any harm," Duo said firmly, defending his brother.
"Quatre, who are those boys talking to Miss. Relena," a girl with forked-brows asked.
"I know one of them is Trowa, but I don't know the other," he answered, and then thought, /Why was she yelling at him? He's too kind to be yelled at. /
"Oh don't get me started on you. You he seemed to like most of all, why I don't know, you never did anything with him. You hardly ever said hello to Heero, but he considered you as a close friend," the blonde girl replied, just as firmly. /'..he seemed to like most of all,' ? / The braded boy was stunned.
"Miss. Relena, we apologize if we've upset you, but what I've said is the truth. I did not mean to lose contact with Heero, and I very much regret doing so. Now if you'll excuse us, we must leave," Trowa finally stated, leading him and his brother to the car.
"We must comfort Miss. Relena," Dorothy said right before walking towards the other girl. This left Quatre to ponder, /How close was Trowa to Heero? And who was that boy he was with? Are they...? /
Meanwhile, within the parking lot, the two brothers were now inside the car, but weren't about to leave just yet. Looking towards the church, Duo asked, "Trowa, when she said he liked me most of all, did she mean he had a...?"
"Yes," Trowa stated simply.
"He had a crush on me? Then why was he with her? Why didn't he tell me, or anything," the braded boy then asked, tears starting to develop.
"Heero wasn't with her, she just forced herself on him all the time. She stalked him, and he couldn't do anything to stop her, because of her position in society, and in our school. As for the reason why he didn't tell you, well, you just about dated every girl. I'll let you assume the rest from there."
"You like to lay on thick, don't you," Duo spatted out.
"Sorry, I just hate it when people assume about him," Trowa responded, trying to calm himself.
"How close were you to him, anyway? From what she said, you guys must've been lovers. Tell me, how'd that go!?!"
"Don't you dare accuse me of doing that! I know how he felt for you, and I know how you felt for him, you think I'm that terrible of a person to try that!?! No! Every day! Every day I spent with him, I told him to tell you, but he refused, he was afraid. Why I don't know, but he was. Even after I told him you were gay, and dated girls as a cover up, he still didn't do it. The only reason she has to say we were close is that we'd visit each other every day, that's all. She has a very scary, obsessive personality, and can become jealous of anyone."
"So of course it'd seem odd to her, that he'd lose contact with me. In fact, I still had all of his numbers, and e-mail addresses at the end of the year. But when I tried to chat with him during the summer, I found out he had changed all of that, and didn't bother to tell me." Staying quiet, the green-eyed boy waited for all of this information to sink into his brother's mind.
"So basically, Heero cut off all communication with you? Why? Did she go so far as to hack into his personal computer files, and found out where he lived," Duo then asked, thinking carefully.
"Perhaps, but lets get going. Others are starting to head out." Looking towards the church again, he noticed people were leaving. Deciding to beat traffic, he pulled out of their parking space, and drove. Like before, the ride was silent, until Duo noticed something and said, "Hey, a shooting star. Make a wish."
Even though his last sentance was sarcastic, the braded boy meant it when he thought, /I wish for my brother's happiness in both life and love. /
/I wish Heero could really be with Duo, and that they could have true happiness, for once, / Trowa thought as well. He knew better than to trust in wishes, but he felt a little better after making one. Soon enough, they were at his home, getting out of the car, he said goodbye to his brother, and walked to his door. Strangely, there was a large wooden crate in front of it.
Leaving quickly, Duo drove off and headed home himself. Though he wondered for just a second as to why the crate was so big. It wasn't until he got to his own doorstep did he think of it again, because right in front of the door, was another crate.
