Clouds across the Moon

Before I start, I don’t own any of the characters, nor do I get paid for writing these things..

K, this is my first attempt at writing a song-fic, short, sweet and recommended by a few friends of mine, well, here we go… <<(/^_^\)>>

“I really think you aughta talk to him Duo,” Quatre sighed from the back seat of the limo,

“Ah, I don’t know Quatre,” Duo sighed, “It’s awfully late and…what if he’s forgotten about me? I mean, we haven’t talked in at least a year…”

Trowa sat up, “Just give it a try Duo, I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten, I mean, Wufei’s up there with him isn’t he?”

“I guess…” Duo sighed, “Ok, Pull over.” he nodded to the driver.

The limo pulled up beside a pay phone and Duo got out,

“We’ll wait here for you,” Quatre said from the back window, leaning back against Trowa as the limo moved off to turn around.

Making his way over to the phone Duo emptied his pockets of his money and piled it in the phone,

“That should last at least an hour.” he grinned, picking up the receiver.

A face appeared on the blank screen as the operator linked up onto the system,

"Good evening. This is the intergalactic operator. Can I help you?"

Looking straight at the image Duo nodded,

"Yes. I'm trying to reach flight commander Heero Yuy, on Mars, flight 2-4-7"

"Very well, hold on please…” Lowering his eyes the operator keyed in the coordinates and pushed the enter button, “You're through!"

"Thank you operator!"

Biting his lower lip Duo watched the screen change, twisting the tip of his braid nervously between his fingers as the walls of the space station flickered into view,

He smiled as his lover’s face appeared on the screen,

“Duo?” Heero looked surprised,

“Hi darlin'! How you doing?
Hey baby, were you sleeping?
Oh I'm sorry, but I've been really missing you!”
Hi darlin'! How's the weather?
Say baby, is that cold better now ?
Oh I'm sorry, is there someone there with you??” He caught sight of the Chinese pilot standing behind him; with a smile Duo nodded to the boy who smirked and walked away,

Oh...since you went away, there's nothing goin' right !
I just can't sleep alone at night... I'm not ashamed to say
I badly need a friend...or it's the end.

He cast his gaze up at the sky and let out a sigh, watching as the clouds passed the moon,
“Now, when I look at the cloud's across the moon.
Here in the night I just hope and pray that soon.
Oh baby, you'll hurry home to me.”

“Hi darlin', the guys say they love you.
Hey baby, is everything fine with you?
Please forgive me, but I'm trying not to cry…”

He quickly wiped a stray tear from his eye, hoping Heero had not seen it,

“Oh...I've had a million different offers on the phone.
But I just stay right here at home.
I don't think that I can take it anymore this crazy war.”

Raising his free hand he looked up at the sky, to emphasise his words…

Now, when I look at the cloud's across the moon.
Here in the night I just hope and pray that soon.
Oh darlin, you'll hurry home to me.”

A young, blond, female worker entered the room at that moment making her way over to the communication system, A huge smirk rising on her lips as she spotted the pair on the screen…

The operator looked up from his book to the screen before him, spotting the girl in the reflection,

"I'm sorry to interrupt your conversation, but we are
experiencing violent storm conditions in the asteroid belt at this
time. We may lose this valuable deep space communication link.
Please, be as brief as possible. Thank you."

Spinning round on his seat he turned to the girl,

“What are you doing? Get away from there! Relena!” The man quickly rose to his feet and moved to pull her back; catching her by the left hand he pulled her aside,

She scowled at him, hitting the button with her free hand then stepping back as he released her,

“Oh...since you went away, there's nothing goin' right!
I just can't sleep alone at night... I'm not ashamed to say
I badly need a friend...or it's...or it's…”

Suddenly the image on the screen shut off and the line went dead… Gasping, Duo pushed away from the wall and anxiously began trying to re-establish the connection,

"Hello?" "Hello operator?"
"Yes, we seem to have lost the connection! Could you try again please?"

Duo waited, heart pounding, as the man returned to his seat,

"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid we've lost contact with Mars 2-4-7 at this time."

The operator’s image flickered as the screen closed down,

"Ok. Well, thank you very much...
I'll...I'll try again next year...next year...next year...next year..." A small tear ran down the boy’s cheek and he placed the handset down.

The limo pulled up beside him and Quatre lowered the window,

“Everything ok Duo?” he asked, not seeing the boy’s face, “Want a lift back?”

“I…I think I’ll walk,” Duo muttered, his voice wavering slightly as he walked past the car.

“Ok, we’ll meet you back at the safe house then,” Quatre said winding up the window,

Duo watched them drive away before crossing the road,

Sniffing, he made his way up to Lunar peak; The spot he and Heero had once called their own… there he sat down on the grass and sighed, blinking back the tears and watching as the clouds crossed the moon.

“Next year,” he whispered, “Next year…”
