Duo fell back onto his recliner and clutched his aching forehead. There were so many chaotic thoughts and emotions rushing through him at the moment, hence he needed to be off his feet. He looked to the side and saw a picture of him and Heero holding hands; it'd been collecting dust on an old lamp post. He then sighed and turned his attention toward the ceiling. It'd been weeks since the last time he and Heero held hands. Of course, that was only when he and Heero went for a short walk around the neighborhood. Even then, he'd felt more like Heero was dragging him along while their new neighbors were greeting them. Not quite the image of a happy couple Duo had in mind.
The house they'd moved into recently was now becoming the bane of Duo's existence. He and Heero wanted this house so badly, and for such a long time.
Their last joint was an old run-down apartment they'd been living in since the start of their relationship. After two months of living in that apartment, with paper thin walls and ridiculously high rent, the two of them finally decided to work longer shifts to raise more money, since they planned to move out and get a better place. This was when they began losing time together at home. Heero decided that Duo came into work looking too tired. Although Duo could get his work done all the same, Heero suggesteded that his lover take night shift, since he knew Duo couldn't sleep well at night. He knew, because those were the days they slept in the same bed together. Heero was occasionally awoken by the rattle of Duo's prescription sleeping pills.
They both agreed not to make love for the first time inside that ratty old apartment. Heero wasn't much of a voyeur, and he really didn't feel like getting complaints from neighbors. Neither did Duo, though, he didn't really give a damn either way. He just wanted Heero to be happy, so he kept his raging hormones in serious check.
One night, however, Duo was feeling his pain from lack of love making a little too much. He laid very still on his and Heero's bed, peered up at the ceiling and silently counted all of the tiles. His groin had a real ache in it, despite the fact that he'd already given the bathroom a good, long visit, twice, because of his blasted hormones. Duo felt so horny that night, he could smell it, hear it, and could almost taste it. His nipples were rock hard; head was pounding; and blood was boiling. The cool breeze from the open windows were doing nothing to alleviate his heat. The poor boy wanted sex so badly, and there lay his oblivious boyfriend, fast asleep.
Heero always fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
Duo envied that.
He stared at the oblivious man at his side. He really stared at him. Stared at his bare, muscular back; studied every curve and angle of his spine and shoulder blades. What Duo wouldn't give if Heero wasn't so uptight and dubious about the act of love making, or just plain sex, as Heero often referred it to. To Duo, love making with Heero would've been more than just sex. He just wanted his bloody boyfriend to feel the same kind of passion and love Duo felt for him. It wasn't so much to ask; they'd been seeing each other for a long time, and had know each other for years - five years, to be exact. He knew that Heero did love him, but at the moment, he didn't want to know it. He wanted to feel it.
"Duo?" Heero had him by the throat on reflex. The braided boy cringed in pain, half because Heero was about to break his neck, half because this contact was turning him on even more. Feeling guilty, Duo yanked Heero's arm off of him and ran straight out of their room.
All he could think about that night was how good it felt the press his aching member against Heero's back at the time, and how awful it felt afterward. He had no intension of doing anything sexual to Heero, though, the thought crossed his mind in so many different ways. The contact was very light; it wasn't done purposely. He just wanted to embrace Heero and see if that much would help him fall asleep faster. He figured the part where he wrapped his arm around Heero was too much, and that's what jolted the former soldier awake. The war still affected Heero pretty badly, but thankfully, it took more than slight things to wake him up. Obviously, cuddling with his boyfriend wasn't slight.
Duo could remember being an inch away from tears when Heero'd finally decided to come after him. He didn't recall how long he'd been out ot the room, but some of the tension in the air had vanished... at least until Heero began giving him a bemused look. Duo swallowed hard.
"I think it's about time you considered Takuho-san's offer." Heero sighed. "He has needed an extra pair of hands for weeks, and night shift will be good for you." The tone of that voice told Duo there was no other option.
His jaw dropped to the floor. He couldn't believe he blew it that badly with Heero. Not only would they be unable to see each other at work during the day at work, but they'd no longer sleep together at night. Duo didn't want it to be that way; it was far too much separation. Plus, there were times where he, Heero, and Relena would all go out for coffee when she wasn't too busy. He liked being Relena's body guard, despite the fact that she had enough guards to pack an entire colony. Reluctantly, rather unwillingly, Duo instantly agreed with Heero, and was on the job the very next night. It had been like that ever since.
After that unpleasant memory haunted him a good while, Duo was once again an inch away from tears. He had seldom ever cried in his entire life. It just wasn't his style. He'd always smile in spite of himself, no matter how he felt. Many of his smiles, his frowns, and his bad-boy moments were the tears he cried. Not when it came to Heero, though. No, Heero had quite a way of surfacing all of Duo's inner turmoil. No one... nothing had ever been able to do that. Not since the death of Sister Helen. Along with Maxwell Church went every last tear he planned to cry.
"Duo?" The sad boy's head jerked in surprise to the sound of his lover's voice. He didn't hear Heero walk in. Hell, Heero wasn't even supposed to be home for another two and half hours, which reminded Duo that he had to go to work in about twenty minutes. 'Time sure flies when you're feeling sorry for yourself,' Duo thought to himself while he straightened up his face.
"You're early," Duo said, his former miserable features having disappeared considerably. His acting skills were commendable at best. "I guess that means I'm late, huh?"
"You're not going anywhere," Heero said, locking the door casually, as he would when the day was over. Duo gave him a questioning look.
"Uum, okay. Mind telling me WHY I'm not going anywhere?" Duo sounded much more demanding than he meant to, but his face still looked as playful as expected. He noticed Heero looked really deep in thought at the moment. "What's wrong, sweet heart? Got nothing to say about this? You usually have a good reason for everything you do."
Heero stood very still and said nothing. Of course he had a good reason for keeping Duo home; he just didn't know what to say. 'Hi, you're staying home because our relationship is dying, and you're going to help me fix it?' Heero didn't think Duo would appreciate that very much, considering the subject on the line was very sensitive. Relena did tell him about a dozen times on the way home not to push Duo.
"Um... Heero? Are you all right?" The braided man stood up and walked over to his confused lover. Heero stood very still while Duo placed his hand on his forehead. "You don't feel feverish. Maybe I should call a doctor, just in case."
Just as Duo turned around, Heero grabbed his arm tightly. The force of the Japanese man's grip wasn't enough to cause any pain, but it was enough to let Duo know that he really wasn't going anywhere.
"Duo... look at me." Bewildered blue-violet eyes met equally confused cobalt. Duo's arm felt cold when the guy loosened his vice grip. Heero bit his lip. He had no idea what to say to Duo, so, he did the only thing he could do. He showed Duo exactly what he wanted to say by embracing his lover very close and tight to his body. Duo couldn't breathe, not only because Heero was hugging him so tightly, but because he was in shock. What had compelled his closed-off lover to something so.... affectionate?
"Heero... " Duo returned the embrace fiercely, not daring to question his lover's sudden show of compassion.
They remained like that for awhile, memorizing the feel of the other in their arms. It felt so perfect. They were the same height, so it was easy for them to rest their heads on each other's shoulder. Heero began to play with the tip of Duo's braid while Duo gently stroked the back his lover's head. Time stopped for both of them. It could've been minutes, hours, or even days, and neither of them would've noticed.
Duo could almost literally feel their hearts connect when Heero rose his face to kiss him. For the first time in so long, Duo's stomach did back flips, and his face completely flushed.
Heero was doing this.
Heero was giving him attention.
Heero loved him.
Duo found himself unable to breathe again.
"Duo... " Heero's lips ghosted over the other man's slightly parted lips. It'd been so long since he got to taste his lover. His tongue slipped right into the small opening of Duo's lips, and the stunned boy eagerly allowed Heero into his mouth. Their tongues clashed and massaged one another, slowly at first, as if this was their first french kiss all over again. Duo deepened the kiss when he pulled Heero's head closer to his, and both of them slid their eyes closed. Heero sucked lightly on Duo's tongue, finding the faint taste of peppermint. He assumed Duo had a candy cane earlier, or something.
"Aw... shit... " Duo ground out, as soon as he and Heero broke that sensuous, mind boggling kiss. Both of them had been panting slightly. It really was like their first kiss all over again, only, this one felt better than the first. The first had been strictly out of desire. This one, however, was out of pure love.
"Duo... " Heero cupped his boyfriend's cheek and began to give him small kisses along Duo's jaw line.
"What is it?" Duo returned Heero's affection by giving the stoic man a few friendly nips on the ear. He swore he could almost hear his lover purr. Heero was especially sensitive by his ears.
Again, Heero was completely lost for words. He didn't know how to approach the next subject at hand without pushing it. He began to feel slight pressure in his groin, yet he really didn't want this moment to end, due to raging hormones. Heero was content that Duo was still here; that Duo felt the same as he did.
Heero sighed and leaned his head on Duo's shoulder again. "Do I make you unhappy, Duo?"
"What!? No!" Duo embraced Heero tightly, almost as if someone or something was trying to take his lover away from him. "It's being away from you so damn much that makes me unhappy."
"I thought you'd like working night shift." Heero swallowed hard. "You sleep a lot better during the day."
"I'd never sleep again if it meant I could be with you." Both of them began to shake. Their fierce embrace was beginning to tighten up more than the first one had. "Don't you know how much I love you?"
Heero didn't move, not even to blink. Duo Maxwell was pouring out his heart, and Heero continuously found himself lost for words. He had no idea how strongly Duo would be affected by this separation; how strongly he himself would be affected by it. After the holidays, they seriously needed something done about their work schedule. Heero didn't know how much more of this pain he could take before the dam breaks. Unlike the other three ex-Gundam pilots, Heero and Duo weren't as partial to letting out their sadness through words and tears. However, their day was bound to come. And today was looking just like it.
"Spend Christmas with me," Heero said finally. "Spend a week with me."
"A week?" Duo asked, pulling Heero back so he could look him in the eye. Those dark blue eyes shone with inner turmoil. Heero Yuy was having a battle inside himself. 'He's just like me. Too smug to cry in front of anyone.'
"Relena... " Heero cleared his throat and squinted one of his eyes shut. Duo laughed a little, which alleviated Heero's urge to cry quite a bit.
"Hmm... Relena? What's she got to do with any of this?" Duo thought for a second about the kind of relationship she and Heero had. Knowing her, she probably found out about the glitch in their relationship and went completely ballistic on Heero. Duo could picture it in his mind, too. After he made it perfectly clear that he had no romantic interest in Relena, Duo always saw her as an older sister to Heero, nagging and comforting him whenever he needed it.
"She threatened to fire me if I didn't take a week off from work," Heero said with a slight hint of amusement in his tone. "She's also going to make me work night shift... if she doesn't get you back on day shift, that is."
Duo blinked a few times, trying to process that information. Relena did all that just for them? Duo took Heero's face in his hands and kissed him soundly. "Give her that and tell her it was from me." He winked.
"Why don't you do it yourself? She's stopping by tomorrow." Duo's face lit up when Heero told him that. He didn't even know where to begin thanking the world's former queen for the good she'd done to his relationship with Heero.
