Cult Characteristic

Prologue

Heero stared at the phone. He wanted to call, but it was late and he had nothing left to say. That didn't make it right. But it was late. He was probably in bed. So why couldn't he stop staring at the phone? It's not like he was alone. As soon as Heero told Quatre the small blonde had been over there in a flash. Maybe that was the problem. Why Quatre and not him? Why couldn't Heero be the one to comfort?

Because Heero had started the fight.

"Duo…" Heero glared at the phone, begging it to ring. It was their first argument and while Heero didn't really think it was that big a deal he knew Duo was superstitious enough to drag all kinds of theories into the pot. That worried Heero. He wanted this to work. It had to work; Duo meant everything.

Sighing heavily, Heero forced himself to leave the phone alone and headed for the shower. He needed one after running all the way up those stairs to his apartment just so he could ring Quatre and tell him to go calm Duo down. Duo had been so mad…

Shaking the memory off, Heero turned on the water and quickly undressed, relishing the feel of warm spray against his flesh. He loved water; loved the way it caressed without really touching, just rolling off as if it never was leaving those thin, quickly vanishing trails in its wake. It was beautiful.

Duo is beautiful.

Heero hissed as the memory of the fight surfaced again. It seemed determined to play over and over in his skull, and he was powerless to stop it. Staring at the tiled wall, he let it come. Such a stupid thing to argue over, where they wanted to eat. But Duo had secretly known Heero hated fast food and that some small part of Heero frowned upon consuming it. So Duo had demanded fast food. Heero had just wanted something romantic. Something tasteful. Something expensive, and in Duo's eyes too upper class. Heero had wanted to show Duo that nothing was out of his class…that he fitted in anywhere.

They never got that far. Hell, they never made it to the parking lot.

Rubbing shaky hands over his face, Heero left the shower, wrapping a white towel around his waist as he headed for the bedroom.

The phone rang.

Heero stared at it from the bedroom door, the small white rectangle hanging on the far wall. He had imagined it, surely.

But it rang again. And again. He just kept staring at it. What if it was Duo? What would he say? Was there really anything he could say? Maybe he should just listen? He was good at listening, but he knew Duo hated that…

It rang again. And again. And again. It wouldn't ring again. Heero lunged for the phone.

"Hello?"

There was a surprised gasp on the other end. Heero knew he had only just reached it in time and sighed in relief.

"Duo?"

"No, Heero it's me." Quatre. Quatre had gone to Duo's…

"Heero, he's not here."

Not home. Gone. Outside. In the rain. In pain. Heero could sense it in Quatre's voice; the uncertainty, the slight waver that meant not all was well. But he didn't ask.

"Has he run?"

"I…I don't know. His place is a mess…" But it's a mess all the time. How would they ever know if everything was there or not? It was impossible. Only time would tell.

"Thank you Quatre. I'll just have to wait until tomorrow."

"I'm sure he's just taking a walk…or something…" Then why do you sound so unsure? Heero shook his head.

"Sure. See you tomorrow Quatre."

"Tomorrow Heero."

Heero hung up the phone. He went to bed. He almost slept. When the alarm went off in the morning, he got up, had breakfast, got dressed and drove to work. Nothing out of the ordinary, everything is okay.

Heero met Wufei on his way in to Preventers headquarters. They went to their desks. They didn't say anything. Heero saw Quatre and Trowa at lunch. They didn't say anything either.

At the end of the day, Heero went home. He jogged around the block, took a shower, ate dinner and went to bed. The phone didn't ring.

The next day the alarm went and Heero got up, had breakfast, got dressed…

And so went the life of Heero Yuy for the next eleven months. The only indulgence allowed was in the brief moment before sleep overcame the body, when he lay staring at the empty space in the bed beside him and he would ask the silence…

"Why did you run?"
