Dangerous Affairs 6/?
Lunch had been once again an embarrassing event and Wu Fei wondered why he had bothered to go with the terrible twosome into Duo's realm of nonconforming lunches. It was always the same everywhere they went. After the incident with the prawns in shells, it hadn't been too bad, but Duo had some how managed to get Wu Fei a date for Friday night, with the girl at the counter who looked to be around Wu Fei's age. Granted the young girl was *all that and more* as Duo had stated, but Wu Fei had protested profusely. He wasn't interested in dating at the moment. His work took up too much of his time as it was and he didn't need any woman running him around ragged, as he'd so righteously informed Duo, before the braided moron quite happily made his way over to the counter and started making provisions for Friday night.
An hour later, and the date set, they headed back to work. After they had returned to the office Wu Fei had sat Quatre down for a little chat.
~*~ Flash back~*~
"Oh come on, Wu Fei… Duo isn't all that bad."
"No he's worse. A menace to society that one."
"He's funny, "Quatre defended
"Quatre, I cannot understand why you would even consider working with Maxwell. He's crude, rude, annoying, painful, unethical, unorthodox and not to mention embarrassing!"
"And those are just his good qualities." The blonde smiled cheekily
Wu Fei almost choked on his Chinese green tea, "Good qualities. If they were his good ones, I'd hate to see his bad ones."
"C'mon, Wu Fei loosen up a little, at least Duo knows how to live."
"Live… Quatre, there is living and there is… living … Duo lives to annoy, where as I live to work and get the job done. Look, not to say that I don't like the man because I do. It's just that sometimes he does not know how to separate work from play, not to mention the fact that he's always banging his lover in his office."
"…And the elevator!" Quatre added with a smirk.
"Elevator? Is nowhere sacred around that man?" Wu Fei sighed.
Quatre laughed at the look on his superior's face.
"I guess not," the Chinese detective answered his own question, defeated. "Fine, you can still work with him but do not encourage him in his playfulness whilst in the working environment, otherwise it could damage your reputation too."
Quatre grinned and placed his hand over the Chinese man's shoulder."Thanks, Wu Fei!"
Wu Fei gave him a questioning glance and raised his eyebrows."For what?"
"For looking out for me. I do understand what you're saying and I know why you're saying it and I appreciate the fact that you care enough to let me know that it concerns you."
Wu Fei suddenly turned red in the face."Yes, well… you have a lot going for you. You are learning things at an incredible rate and…" he paused momentarily as he thought the next few words out thoroughly, "And I have to admit that I am very impressed with how far you have come in such a short space of time."
The tables had turned and Quatre found himself turning a crimson shade of red. "I promise, Wu Fei," the blonde began sincerely, "I won't let you down."
~*~ End flashback~*~
Quatre sat quietly in Heero's office waiting for Duo to get off the phone. He had spent the last half an hour listening to the braided wonder making appointments arranging to interview the families of the victims of the serial rapist and murderer.
He'd made three for this afternoon already and two for tomorrow. Quatre was impressed to say the least.
He was watching Duo dial the next number when his cell `phone rang.
"Winner's phone, how can I help you…"
"Cut the crap, Quatre, it's just me, "
"Hey, Heero, how's it going down there?"
"Fine, but I could use some help here. How's the insatiable sex beast doing on the appointment end of things?"
"He's arranged three interviews for this afternoon so you might want to give it a rest in the archives for now because the first one is in half an hour," Quatre informed him.
"Shit, that was fast!"
"Tell me about it. He can hardly wait to get there." The blonde chuckled a little, "I think he's really getting into this case."
"Yeah, I know. It's his first big case since we were made partners. I have to keep him in check though. He was becoming a little too consumed in it and I had to set him straight. "
"Doesn't look like it worked, Heero."
"What?"
"He's still as gay as ever."
A moments silence echoed over the cell `phone
"I'll be there shortly," Heero replied stoically, "and Quatre… Don't give up your day job."
Quatre laughed as the `phone conversation finished and Duo turned, waving at him, his finger covering his lips, the office telephone receiver still in his hand.
The blonde slapped his hand over his mouth, "Oops, sorry, Duo," he whispered a little sheepishly. He'd forgotten about that.
Duo hung up a moment later unsuccessfull in getting through to the contact he wanted to reach. There was no point in wasting time when there was no time to waste. This case had to be solved, and fast. He turned to Quatre who was perusing the certificates on the walls above Heero's desk. Duo sighed, there was nothing above his yet except for his Junior Detectives License.
Quatre heard the sigh and grinned, "Don't worry, Duo, I know you two'll crack this case right open and then you'll have something to put above there."
"The funny thing is, Quat, it's not that, that really bothers me…."
"What is it then?" the young blonde inquired curiously.
Duo turned around in his seat, his legs straddling the chair and his arms folded over the back of it, his chin resting on his arms. "It's just that Heero is so dedicated to this job and I play the clown so much. What if I end up being a hindrance to him instead of a help?"
Quatre smiled reassuringly at his young friend. "I don't think that's going to happen, Duo. Heero's more worried about your well-being than you being a hindrance. "
"That's right," Heero's voice sounded as he entered the room, "All I care about is… A)… solving this case as soon as possible and… B)… You!" Heero stated firmly, " Look, I know it must seem like I don't care sometimes and that I can come across as callous and uncaring. But I have to distance myself from you as much as possible feeling wise while we're here."
Duo's face fell and he opened his mouth to speak…
"Let me finish first then you can add your input if need be," Heero requested.
Duo promptly closed his mouth and Quatre took the chance to vacate the up and coming sap fest arena. This wasn't his place to interfere and he shut and locked the door behind him as he left.

Back inside the office, Heero walked up to his lover and best friend. "Listen, Duo. It's not easy for me to work with you sometimes. Not because you're annoying, not because you do the silly or unthinking things you do, I mean we all do that from time to time, you're just a little more….unique…at it, that's all; but imagine this if you will. Everyday I come to work with you, everyday you and I are in close proximity…both here and at home and every day, when we're lying together in bed at the end of the day I thank god that some bastard hasn't put a bullet through your head. I worry all day everyday and wonder if I walk in here with you, am I still going to walk out with you when I leave. The last case we had, ok it wasn't as big as this, but you almost copped a bullet." He sighed softly, "Granted that it missed you, Duo, but to lose you would finish my fragile faith in humanity, to lose you would be to lose half of who I am, half of my soul, to lose you would be the biggest tragedy of my life and you're worried I might think that you're a hindrance?..." He rolled his eyes, "Shit, lover, that's not even hitting the equation here."
Duo stood silent, his lips pursed tightly, his mind searching for the right words, but none came. It seemed that for once in his life the junior detective had well and truly been rendered speechless.
Heero watched in silence as a solitary tear slid smoothly off his lover's cheek, then another. He made his way over to Duo and knelt in front of the chair. A small sigh escaped Duo's unusually quiet lips as Heero gently wiped the tears from his face. He leant forward and tenderly pressed his lips against the softness of Duo's. The junior detective shuddered as a wave of emotion swept over his already trembling body. His lover kissed him every day and the sparks were always present, but this time it was different, this time it felt as if their souls had reached out and embraced one another.
Duo sighed wistfully as Heero broke the kiss, their eyes remained locked on each other, suddenly a look of loving sincerity washed over Heero's face and he stood, taking Duo's hand in his own, pulling him up from out of the chair. Heero bent down and scooped Duo up in his arms. It caught the junior completely by surprise as he walked over to the couch and laid him gently down.
Duo blushed as Heero leant over him and whispered to him, "I love you, Duo. Let's make love, right here, right now. I don't care about Trieze or anyone else right now… only you!"
Duo thought for a second that he was imagining things. There was no way on earth the Heero he knew would just agreeably make love to him here at work, especially without premeditated assault of his family jewels.
"Heero?"
"You heard me, Duo."
"But we can't… not now lover." Duo responded instantaneously.
We can't?" What do you mean *we can't*? You're usually all over me and here I am offering and *you* say we can't?" Heero inquired, a little confused.
"It's not that I don't want to, lover, and I appreciate the thought, because all I want to do right now is have you pound hard into me until I scream the place down, but there's a slight hitch."
"Hitch? What hitch could we have that would make you turn down a moment of heated love making for?"
"We have an appointment for an interview with one of the victims families."
"Ahh yes, Quatre mentioned something about appointments, so yes, that would be a rather big `hitch' then."
"I'll take a rain check though partner. You can take me home tonight and cover me with caramel sauce."
Heero laughed, "Make it chocolate and it's a deal."
"Done!" Duo laughed too, "But we're probably going to have to leave the agency in about five. Are we bringing Quat or leaving him to continue researching?" Duo asked as he climbed off the couch.
"I was going to leave him behind, but I think I'll let him accompany us to the ones you made this afternoon, just so he can get a taste of ground work. We'll decide on the rest as required."
Duo nodded. "Roger that Heero." He grinned as he continued, " So shall we go and get the learner and head off?"
Heero headed towards the door and unlocked it then held it open for Duo."After you, Junior Detective Maxwell."
"Why thank you, Senior Detective Yuy," Duo smirked as he headed out of the office. Turning to face Treize's office Duo waited for Heero to close and lock up there office. "I'll go grab the dweeb."
"Did you bring the address?"
"In my pocked address book dearest," Duo winked patting his top pocket.
"Then I'll see you both at the car."
Duo laughed as Heero playfully blew him a kiss."Idiot," he said as he watched Heero head down the hallway. Shaking his head in mild amusement the braided wonder headed off after their blonde counterpart.

Trowa tidied himself as the door to his office closed then sitting back in his chair he sighed. Tonight, after work, he would head out to Azrael's, the gay bar and nightclub situated two blocks down the road. He deserved a break, and a real fuck wouldn't go astray. Catalonia was a great lay, but that's all she would ever be to him. She was convenient, there when he needed to release his pent up frustrations, but in reality she didn't do a thing for him. He'd always preferred men to women. Dorothy was a easy piece of trash, she always spread her legs for the staff, but it wouldn't be in his interest to fire her. That could cause problems on a larger scale. He'd built his corporation from the ground up using the inheritance he had received at 21 to finance it himself. TB Shuttle parts Inc' was starting to become popular with shuttle designers and it was seemingly fortunate that the first class shuttle parts that Trowa's company sold had begun to make a name for themselves; and so he couldn't afford anything to go wrong now.
He sighed again and leant over to grab the folder on top of his desk. His one o'clock was late, thank god for that. He glanced at his out tray; mail to be sent was piled up to the brim. He reached out to press the buzzer on his desk's com link but his buzzed before he could get the chance."Good timing, Miss Po, I was just going to call you. What can I do for you?"
Sally's voice came over the com link. "Your one o'clock has just canceled, Mr Barton. He sends his apologies but something came up."
"Ahh, in that case you go about your business, Miss Po. I was going to ask you to go to the post office for me but since I have some free time I think I'll go myself. Moreover, I could use a lunch break. If anyone calls let them know I will be back in around an hour and a half."
"Yes, sir," Sally replied compliantly, "Enjoy your lunch."
"Thank you, I shall." He switched the com link off and grabbed his jacket from the coat rack, heading straight out of the door.
It would be nice to escape from the office for a while.

Duo had found Quatre in his office where Wu Fei was busy with some paperwork updates. They'd left with minimal discussion and headed straight to the car where Heero was waiting patiently for them.
Quatre waved an envelope at the dark haired detective. "Um, Wu Fei asked me to ask you if it was ok to just drop this in at the front desk at the post office. He said they're expecting it so I can just drop it straight in at the front desk without waiting."
Heero glanced at his partner, "Time?"
"Yeah we can spare a few. It won't throw us out by more than a minute or so."
"Thanks guys, I really appreciate it." He directed the next sentence at Heero, "And I believe I need to thank you too, for letting me come with you. What made you change your mind? I mean, you were going to leave me to research."
"I decided you should have a little first hand experience on ground work outside of the office. Researching is one thing, but interviewing is a whole new ball game." He gave the blonde a serious look, "And I'm warning you now, Winner… this isn't going to be a *fun* thing; so I hope you have your heart shoved somewhere where it won't interfere with your rational thinking. Emotions are required, but you can't allow yourself to be involved on a personal level and you know what I mean by that."
"I promise, Heero. I won't bring up Relena."
"I'm trusting you here, Quatre."
"I know you are; and I promised you I wouldn't let you down didn't I?"
Heero nodded. "I know I sound a little demanding, maybe even cruel and tough but it's my responsibility to make sure this case is handled correctly and to see to it that you two know where your priorities lie."
"I understand Heero," Quatre began, "And…"
"…And if we don't get a move on, we will be late," Duo intervened.
Heero started the car up as the other two hopped in and fastened their seatbelts.
Duo stretched back in his seat and yawned lazily before sitting upright as the car took off."First stop, the post office," he smirked.

Trieze sat back at his desk looking over the training file that Wu Fei had to keep for Detective Winner's progress. He had called Wu Fei into his office for a meeting to discuss the young trainee's progress and was now waiting for the Chinese man to arrive.
Finally Wu Fei poked his head in through the door and Treize motioned for him to enter and sit. The Chinese man complied as quickly as possible. He hated these meetings at the best of times. They wasted time and he wondered why they even bothered with the training files at all. Nothing he could say would be different to what he had written in the folder itself. It puzzled him no end, but rules were rules he supposed.
Wu Fei waited silently as Treize continued to peruse the file. Again it puzzled him… Why didn't the man just wait and call him in after he had finished reading it? It made no sense to just sit there and get paid for watching his boss read when he could be finishing off his paper work at his own desk. He had enough of the damn stuff that was for sure.
Finally, Treize placed the file down onto the desk. Raising an eyebrow he folded his arms and sat back in his chair.
Wu Fei waited silently for his response.
"I'm impressed, Chang. You have certainly put a great amount of effort into Winner's training."
"I simply informed and showed him what was required of him. He put forth the effort and what you see before you is the result of that."
Treize nodded, "He certainly is quick to pick up on things. At this rate he will be promoted to Junior in no time."
"You do know that he is working with Yuy and Maxwell on their case don't you?" Chang asked.
"Yes, I do," he confirmed, " It should be interesting to see how he handles a case like this. However… " he continued, "…I have told him that if you need him for anything then he needs to put that as his first priority."
"I have also suggested to him that he tries not to encourage Maxwell in his…shall we say, 'strange habitual rituals' during work hours."
Treize laughed a little. "Yes, that was probably a good idea. Maxwell is quite incorrigible to say the least."
Wu Fei had to agree.
"But I daresay that our dear Quatre is a little more sensible than that, besides, Maxwell does have his good points."
"Yes, I believe so, crude, rude, annoying, painful, unethical, unorthodox and not to mention embarrassing!"
Trieze gave the Chinese detective a strange look.
"Never mind, Sir. It's an 'in' joke…."
"I see… Well I think that this about wraps our little meeting up. The next report on Winner's progress is in three weeks. Keep up the good work detective Chang!"
The Chinese man bowed his head respectfully. "I will endeavor to do so sir. Thank you."
Treize watched the Asian as he left the room. Switching on his com link, Trieze keyed in Zechs' office number. "Zechs, are you there?"
"Yes, Treize?"
"You were right… He does have a cute ass."
Laughter echoed out over the com link. "Shame he's straight."
"Yes, such a waste isn't it! Although I'm sure with a little persuasion,… " the red haired man stopped mid sentence, a thought skimming through his mind, a small smile crept onto his face, "I'll get back to you in a minute Zechs."
Closing his communication with Zechs, Treize entered Wu Fei's number, "Wu Fei?"
"Yes sir?"
"I would like you to come to dinner tonight at my place. Zechs and I will be discussing a new case and we'd like you to help us out; that's if you don't mind of course…"
A moment's silence reigned and then, "I would be honored sir. Is there anything you would like me to bring?"
"What would you suggest?" Treize inquired.
"I will stop in on my way home and pick up a desert of some kind. I would feel bad if I turned up empty handed."
"I understand, Chang. Very well. Do you need the address?"
"I have it."
"Good. Then it's settled. We will see you around half past six, maybe a quarter to seven?"
"See you then sir."
The line went quiet and Treize once again entered in Zechs' number, "I hope you don't mind… but we have an extra guest for dinner."
"Don't tell me…" The surprised voice came back.
"Let's just say tonight, Zechs… the desert is on Wu Fei!!

The post office was, for once, uncrowded. Quatre jumped out of the car even before Heero had the chance to bring the car to a halt and headed in through the main doors. Forgetting that he could hand it straight in he made a beeline for the counter. Calculating that he would only be about a minute or so as there were only two people in front of him, he pulled the envelope out from his jacket and it sailed to the floor below. Cussing quietly under his breath he leant down to pick it up only to have it handed to him. "You really should use your knees to bend you know," He heard a gentle voice instruct him. "Otherwise you could do yourself some damage."
Quatre glanced across to see his, *motherly* advisor and almost fell forwards as he came face to face with the most gorgeous pair of eyes he had ever seen. Luckily for Quatre the owner of those eyes managed to hold him upright.
"T, thank you," Quatre stammered as he was helped into a standing position
"You're welcome, "
Quatre opened his mouth to speak his introduction, but the call of the postal worker interrupted and he turned, handing the envelope over. "This is from Detective Chang at the Kushrenada detective agency. He said that you would know what it was for."
"Ah… yes, we are expecting this. Thank you. I'll hand it over to the postal master as soon as he gets back from his lunch break."
"Thanks," Quatre replied as he quickly turned, hoping to speak with the soft spoken stranger again. A disappointed look fell over his face and he kicked himself for not completing the introduction. Sighing, he exited the post office and climbed back into the car.
Duo grinned as the blonde slumped into the seat and did his seatbelt up. "Why the glum look Quat? The postmaster try to chat you up again?"
"YUK!! No… If you must know… I just had a run in with the most gorgeous pair of eyes I have ever seen."
"Problem being?" Heero inquired as he headed the car off down the road towards their next destination.
"I didn't get a chance to introduce mine to his." He sighed again.
Duo smirked at the blonde as Heero shook his head, "Never mind Quat… there's plenty more eyes in the world for you to gaze into than just those. "
Quatre gave a small laugh, "Yeah I guess,…" and then a forlorn sigh, "…but they were so dreamy."
"That's all very sappy and nice but we need to concentrate on the task at hand, which is this interview. So I suggest, *children*, that you both put yourselves in a more serious state of mind, start to play adult and leave the love life, or lack of, at home."
Quiet had immediately circulated within the vehicle and Heero gave himself a self-satisfied, smug grin. `Yes!' He thought to himself. It was true.
Silence was definitely golden.
