Dangerous Affairs part 8
"Fuck, Yuy! You can be such an asshole!"
Heero shrugged seemingly unaffected by Duo's chastizement as he turned and headed back down towards the car.
Duo fumed as Heero ignored him. Quatre remained quiet, choosing to keep out of this. Heero must have had his reasons for dealing with the woman the way he did and he certainly wasn't going to argue on the point of the matter.
Reaching the bottom of the stairs that led up to Mrs. Yates' floor, Duo rounded on his senior blocking his way and holding him by the elbow, "What the fuck is wrong with you, you can't just go around insulting people like that?"
Quatre swallowed as Heero stared at the other man, his demeanor unchanging and for a brief moment Quatre thought that he would have a fight on his hands until Heero pulled his elbow away and spoke. "If you're quite finished, Duo. I will explain my actions to you both once we're in the car and our of earshot of any other contact."
Duo bit his lip as Heero pushed past him, Quatre followed.
"Can you not make him mad when I'm around.." Quatre requested. "He's kinda unnerving when he gets like that."
Duo sighed apologetically, "Sorry Quatre. It's just that, she's an old lady... I don't think he should have spoken to her in that manner."
Quatre gave him a consoling pat on the back, "You heard him, Duo, when we get back to the car, I'm sure he'll have a good explanation for it!"
"He'd wanna..."
"Are you two coming or would you both like to walk...." Heero's voice broke through their conversation, "It's a long way back to the office from here you know..."
Giving Duo's arm a quick gentle squeeze Quatre headed back to the car; and with a perturbed sigh, Duo followed his counterpart's lead, he still wasn't' too happy with the way his partner had spoken to the woman, but Quatre was right, Heero said that he had an explanation so the right thing to do would be to at least listen first.
Heero waited until the other two were in the car and then started the engine maneuvering, the car out of it's tight parking spot in-between two small trucks. Only when he was heading off down the main road did he speak, "Do you two even realize what happened back there? " he asked in a serious tone of voice.
"Besides your attitude?" Duo retorted.
"Duo!" Quatre pleaded.
Duo sighed. "Only that she wanted the asshole brought to justice like the rest of us and that she couldn't understand why the moron is doing this!"
"Well I noticed she was a bit nervous and fidgety, but that's to be expected isn't it?" Quatre added.
Heero sighed inwardly, a little disappointed, "You two are going to need to listen and concentrate a lot more carefully than you do now if you want to be detectives and I don't mean just listen with your ears, I mean with your eyes and your body as well."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Duo grunted
"Didn't you feel the atmosphere in that room at all Duo Maxwell!!"
Duo swallowed. It wasn't often that his partner quoted his whole name and he knew when that happened he was in trouble. "Er, no only the tension that you caused towards the end."
Quatre bit the inside of his lip, "We missed something really important…didn't we, Heero?"
"Well at least you picked *that* up quicker than I expected…" Heero jibed, "You two couldn't have missed it any better if you'd tried. Quatre, when we introduced you what did you notice?"
Quatre sighed deep in thought as his mind ran back through the events after they had entered Mrs. Yates apartment. "Well she looked at me all weird like, she seemed nervous actually, but I don't know why…"
"Maybe she thought you looked too young to be a smart assed Detective…" Duo quipped.
Heero frowned, "Speaking of smart assed detectives, Maxwell, what about you? What did you notice?"
"That she was an old lady and you weren't very amicable."
"Answer properly or keep your big mouth shut!" Heero finally snapped.
Duo shrugged and folded his arms, "Fine!" Making a zipping motion with his hand across his lips, the junior detective turned to look out of his window. He didn't feel like answering anyway.
Heero shook his head more than just a little disappointed with his partner and lover. Deciding on the more mature option to ignore him, Heero continued, "Since you want to listen and learn, Quatre, I'll tell you what you missed. Firstly, something about you seems to strike a nerve with her. Secondly, yes she was fidgety and nervous; her eyes were constantly averted from me and towards you, she seemed almost too afraid to let you out of her sight for more than a moment."
There was an awed silence for a few seconds and the young Detective sighed. "What else Heero? What else did we miss?"
Heero ran through everything in his mind, making sure he got the images clear before going into detail. "You missed the fact that the room was full of tension and fear, before we even sat down to talk. You missed the fact that she was too eager to have us leave once she realized that I knew she wasn't telling us something."
Duo grunted from the side, "If I were her and you spoke to me like that I'd…"
"Duo just shut up!!" Quatre growled.
Stunned and a little taken aback at the harshness in the blonde's voice, Duo chose not to reply, something Heero was relatively grateful for.
"Go on please, Heero." Quatre urged.
"There was a vital piece of information, which Mrs. Yates herself handed over to us without even realizing she'd done it. Do you remember the conversation about the victims we had with her?"
Quatre sighed, "In all honesty, Heero, no I don't. I guess I was feeling rather sorry for her, seeing her have to go through all this."
Heero sighed, "It's ok to feel sorry for them Quatre, but don't be fooled by them…. Remember this? *Why are they doing this? Why are they killing innocent people? Most of them weren't even involved. *
*Oh, yeah. I remember that now."
"Good!" Heero stated, "Now tell me wherein these words of self righteous ignorance is the revelation."
The trainee Detective went over the words that Heero had given him, he closed his eyes and imagined the scene in his head repeatedly, but it was Duo that broke the silence and shocked them both.
"Firstly, " he began, "*Why are they doing this? Why are they killing innocent people?* She uses the word *they* quite strongly; secondly, *most of them weren't even involved* By that I'm presuming she means the victims. How would she know about that, about who was innocent and who wasn't unless she's involved somehow and if she is, she is withholding information vital to our investigation!" He turned to look Heero in the eyes as he pulled up at the last set of lights before the agency. "And I'm sorry I, should have realized what you were trying to do back there."
Heero shrugged, "I was about ready to put a report on file, Duo as much as I love you I can't let the way I feel about you mix into our work environment."
"Tell that to him next time you two are humping the crap out of each other in your office!" Quatre snickered.
"Hey, blondie, that's different!" Duo grinned, "That's work place stress relief!"
"Then what was your excuse for manhandling me, Maxwell?"
"Listen here, you shitty little con artist." Duo retorted with a grin. Heero knows exactly what that was all about!"
"Ahh discovered was I?"
"They saw me with you, you little shit! Then we realized we'd all been had as we watched you, strolling down the hall… flaunting your hundred credits about. You had all of us fooled. I have to admit tho', I'm proud of ya, Quatre! Not even I would've thought to be that much of an asshole!"
Quatre chuckled, "Ahh well, shit happens."
Heero shook his head as they drove into the car park of the Kushrenada Detective Agency. "ok you two forget about that bullshit for now would you!. We've got just over an hour and a half left until we're done for the day and I want you two to get back into the archives as soon as we get inside. I want more information and more names before then."
"Yes, sir!" Duo saluted as he gave his lover a quick peck on the cheek.
Quatre laughed, "Maxwell, you're such a crawler! So Heero what are you going to do?"
"I need to talk to Treize about today's investigation. He needs to be updated and informed as things progress."
"Ah, I see the blonde replied casually. "
The car came to a halt and Heero switched off the engine. "An hour and a half you two."
"Right, Heero." Quatre agreed, "Come on Duo, let's see what else we can dig up." Dragging, the stunned junior Detective from the passenger seat, Quatre pulled him into the Agency without so much as a by your leave to his beloved Heero. Heero grinned at least he could talk to Treize in peace. It was bad enough that Duo would occasionally get a little over excited about the case, but with the two of them working with him now it was going to be `interesting' to say the least.
Locking up the car, he headed in to see Treize.

Sally sat quietly at her desk. She had spent most of the afternoon wondering what the hell had happened back in the lunchroom. Dorothy had unleashed something with in her that she never even knew existed. The question was, was it a good thing? Well it had certainly felt that way. She blushed as the other woman gave her a wink and then grinned. Sally couldn't help but grin back. She felt kind of like `a giddy school girl' was the only way she could think to put it. She turned her attention back to her paperwork, focussing on completing it before the end if the work day. There wasn't much of it left as it was and it was then that she decided that she didn't need any distractions, however, Dorothy took that moment of thoughtful reprove to approach her.
Sally glanced up as Dorothy hovered over her desk, "I know your busy, Sal, but I was just wondering if you're free for dinner tonight?"
Sally blinked, it was an automatic reaction as she hadn't been asked out for what had seemed like forever. "What did you have in mind?" she questioned the younger woman.
Dorothy smiled at her, running her finger down over the dark haired woman's cheek, "Dinner at a restaurant of your choice, a movie and then coffee back at my place afterwards."
Sally pondered the offer. It wouldn't hurt to go out, the least she could do was get to know the other woman a little better. She placed her hand over Dorothy's finger and brought it to her lips, placing a soft kiss to the tip, "I'll pick you up at seven."
Dorothy grinned, giving the other woman another cheeky wink, "I'll take that as a yes then shall I."

Heero knocked on the doorframe of Treize's office. The ginger-haired man looked up from the paper he was reading and set it aside, "Ahh, young Heero. Please, come in and tell me how things are going with the case."
"That's why I'm here, sir. To discuss the case."
Treize raised and eyebrow, "Is that so? Well please, do sit down Detective, and begin when ready."
Heero sat in the chair in front of Treize's desk he looked his superior in the eyes and began. "The first few places we went to couldn't give us much at all. One woman said, that although she could make out the silhouette of the perpetrator there was no other way of seeing what he looked like. At this stage of our investigation it looks like he's planned his attacks carefully, choosing his targets randomly and seemingly knowing the layout of the house enough to find his way to the victim's bedrooms."
"What about the murdered victim's? Can we yet distinguish if it is the work of the same culprit?"
He paused giving his superior a serious look; "No sir not at this point in time, but we're working with the archives so we will do the best we can. Although…. we did have one of the murder victim's mother, a Mrs. Yates, very much in a hurry for us to leave this afternoon."
If Treize could have raised his eyebrows further, he would have done so, "Really, do tell Detective Yuy?"
Heero sat back in the chair and folded his arms, "When we got to our last appointment, the woman a Mrs. Danursha Yates in her early 60s was quite warm and welcoming, that is until Detective Winner was introduced, from that point in she became very uncooperative."
"How odd!"
"Well, yes sir, that's what I thought. She was very standoffish after that. She kept watching him all the time, she was fidgety and nervous, constantly wringing her hands and then when she realized that I had noticed that she was hiding something from us, she became extremely defensive as well as uncooperative." He scratched his head puzzled, "It was almost if she either knew him or had reason to be afraid of him."
"That's quite bizarre, Detective Yuy. Does Winner know her at all?"
Heero shrugged, "He didn't seem to, sir, but if he did he hasn't admitted it or denied it."
Treize sucked in a deep sigh, thinking carefully as he made his next decision, "Where's the young trainee now?"
"Basement with Duo. I sent them both back down to the archives to continue on with the research. May I ask why, sir?"
"Send him to me will you, Heero. I think I should have a word with our Detective Winner about this."

Mrs. Yates sat quietly watching the television when the phone rang. Begrudgingly she wandered over to it and picked up the receiver, her face dropped and her voice became cold and distant, "What do you want?"
