Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing, someone else does (and one day, I'll take the time to write their names down. "Letting the Cables Sleep" is by Bush (yay!)

AN: I know this whole Duo x Hilde, nightmares thing has been done countless times before. I just wanted to do a songfic, and found this song. I'm interpreting it this way for the story and I'm sure that there are countless interpretations of it out there. Anyway, on to the story:

Letting the Cables Sleep

She heard him again that night. Like countless nights before, she heard him thrashing and moaning through the seemingly paper thin walls that separated their bedrooms. He was dreaming again.

< "You in the dark, you in the pain, you on the run.">

She had tried confronting him on the matter, but he always shrugged it off with a smile or a joke. That was his way of dealing with anything troubling. He wanted to forget, why couldn't she? Why couldn't she just ignore his cries in the night? It didn't take her long to realize why. She cared about him - loved him, and she had a nightly reminder of his problem. She couldn't forget.

< "Living a hell, living your ghost, living your end.">

The war had ended two months ago, and with its end, the nightmares began. She knew it had to pertain to his past, a past he did not wish to speak of. She'd heard him cry out one word in his sleep, "Father..."

< "Never seem to get in the place that I belong, Don't want to lose the time, Lose the time to come.">

She was afraid to pry into it further. She didn't want to hurt him and she didn't want to loose him when he needed her most.

< "Whatever you say, It's all right, Whatever you do, It's all good, Whatever you say, It's all right.">

The only alternative she knew was to pay attention to everything he said and did in hopes of learning what was truly bothering him. Over time, her worry grew. He was so good at covering his pain with a mask of cheerfulness.

< "Silence is not the way, We need to talk about it, If heaven is on the way, You in the sea, on a decline, Breaking the waves, Watching the lights go down, Letting the cables sleep.">

He was becoming more and more distant and, not only was he losing sleep, but weight as well. She wanted to reach out to him, but fear overruled her desire to help. Every night, her heart ached as she heard him cry out, but whenever she vowed to go to him, she lost the nerve. She felt powerless.

< "Silence is not the way, We need to talk about it.">

Then one night, she'd had enough. She thrust herself out of bed and tip toed into his room. After months of listening to his nightly torture, she was finally able to gaze lovingly at him as he thrashed in the throes of yet another nightmare. Kneeling beside him, she brushed away a few loose strands of his chestnut brown hair, and gently kissed his cheek.

< "If heaven is on the way, We'll wrap the world around it.">

He seemed to calm down as she softly stroked his face, and he sighed happily in his sleep. She climbed into the bed with him, and held him in her arms. When she had just begun to doze off, she heard him say a phrase that startled her and brought joy at the same time.

< "If heaven is on the way.">

"I love you, Hilde..."
