Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ Deuces Wild ❯ Chapter 4

As Heero was led through the companionways of the Deuces Wild, he mused that only Duo could shock him enough to bring him to this. It had to be shock that had held him virtually immobile as the pirates disarmed him and bound his wrists with his own handcuffs. It wasn't because he wanted to see Duo, which, admittedly, he did. Heero firmly intended to beat some answers out of him. His mind was swift to rationalize his behavior. //I let them handcuff me so that I wouldn't kill Duo out of hand, yeah, that's it.//
He was beginning to regret his earlier hesitation, however. One of the boarding party was taking an all too personal interest. Heero didn't think he'd ever been groped quite that way before and he wasn't sure he liked it. However, if he took matters into his own hands, //well, feet, to be accurate,// they'd never take him to see Duo. He caught himself gritting his teeth and directed a death-glare at the pirate for his latest familiarity.
As they moved into one of the cabins, probably the captain's ready room, the pirate was still grinning unrepentantly as his hand wandered yet again. In the next moment, the pirate was on the floor, holding his face and groaning. Duo stood over him, shaking his head, idly rubbing away the sting from having backhanded his crewman. He turned to look at Heero. "My apologies for his lack of manners."
Returning his attention to the pirate on the deck, Duo added, in a frighteningly normal voice, "You know better than that. Captain has first dibs."
//Captain has WHAT?!// Heero blinked in shock, figuring the meaning was perfectly clear from the sensual smile that curved Duo's lips. //Not that the idea isn't very tempting...// Heero couldn't stop his eyes from taking stock of the changes in Duo. He had grown a foot taller since their piloting days, with broad shoulders, narrow waist and long legs. And from the way Duo filled out his black trousers and suede jacket, he'd definitely kept in shape. The omnipresent braid was still there, hanging to the back of Duo's knees and Heero found himself wondering what all that hair looked like loose. He jerked his eyes away from the braid, quickly bypassing other parts of Duo's anatomy to focus on his face. The heartshape had given way to a more manly profile but had sacrificed none of the beauty. Even as he took all this in, he was aware of the amusement in those violet-blue eyes, amusement directed at him. //Shit!//
//Caught you red-handed, but I'm glad you like what you see.// Duo smirked at his former partner's embarrassment and dismissed his crewmen before taking the time to deliberately peruse the form in front of him. The years had been kind to Heero as well. Though not as tall as Duo, Heero had definitely grown taller, the thinness of his adolescent form had filled in with the lithe bulk of adult musculature. The dark hair was still messy, those eyes a bit more open, and Duo suddenly found himself wondering if Heero's voice had changed, too. He grinned at the faint flush that darkened Heero's cheeks.
"So, how was your trip?" Duo crossed to sit in one of the chairs, nonchalantly crossing his legs at the ankles as if Heero had just stopped by for a visit.
For a moment Heero simply stood and gaped at his former partner, then the whole situation finally sank in. He wasn't here to visit with Duo for old time's sake. It wasn't as if he had run into Duo casually, in a normal setting. Heero had stowed away on the shuttle to catch the pirate and found Duo. That left far more questions than it answered. Anger sparked in him at Duo's apparent comfort. Duo had always been more socially adept and Heero felt as if he had been abruptly thrust back into his 15 year old self.
"Not bad. I went hunting and it seems that I caught something." Heero drawled his response, seating himself across from Duo. He might not be comfortable, but he could certainly pretend.
"Really?" Duo's eyes flickered to the handcuffs and his smile widened. "I don't think you really had any idea of what kind of prey you were after. It's never smart to go in blind."
Heero couldn't help himself, he glared. "Well, I hardly expected to find one of my old friends had turned into a pirate with links to smuggling and a shady politician, but we all learn to live with these little disappointments."
An answering anger sparked in Duo's eyes, an odd undertone entering his voice as he muttered under his breath, "You aren't the only one."
Shaking his head slightly, Duo continued in a more normal voice. "So, you're investigating Hiram Grant, the shuttle cargoes, and the pirate. That you found me is impressive. I didn't expect a stow-away."
Heero looked down at his hands. "Why don't you explain it all to me? Tell me this isn't what it looks like."
"But I can't, Heero, because some of it is EXACTLY what it looks like." A tired, cynical smile ghosted across Duo's face. "Of course, some isn't at all what it seems, either. You're the one who fell down the rabbit hole, so I'll leave it to you to decide the fact from the fiction. I'll admit to some curiousity about what you'll decide."
Heero inwardly flinched at Duo's tone, but hardened his heart. Right now, he couldn't think of Duo as his friend. Duo was a suspect in a case, already burdened by clear evidence of criminal behavior. "I'm curious what caused you to shift from one side of the law to the other. That part isn't exactly hard to interpret."
"We've been on both sides of the law so many times that I'm surprised the line still exists. You were content to serve the peace by serving the law. I've never been content with rules. They also serve..." Duo trailed off with a wave of his hand.
"Heero, look. You may think what you like about me and what I've done, but all I ask is that you examine ALL of the evidence with an unbiased eye." Duo met Heero's eyes for a long moment before standing and crossing to the door.
"You'll have to remain my guest for a time, but you'll have the comfort of a cabin until we reach port. It's likely more comfortable than that shuttle."
Before Heero could respond, two guards appeared and led him out, the door shutting with an odd sense of finality behind him.

Inside the cabin, Heero immediately took advantage of the computer terminal. He buried the conflicting emotions he felt beneath the demands of the mission. There was no time for the hurt of discovering Duo, his renewed attraction to his former partner, nor the stranger elation he felt at finally matching wits with a worthy opponent.
Heero had no doubts that Duo knew he would hack into the computer. Naturally, Duo would make the files he wanted seen accessible and hide the rest. Heero was confident he could get past the camouflage to the real data. A small smile curved his lips as tackled the challenge.
~~~~~
Duo sank back in his chair with a sense of impending doom. He had looked forward to seeing Heero, but hadn't anticipated that it would be on these terms. He hadn't liked the look of betrayal on Heero's face, nor the loss of the trust of one of the few people in the world that he believed in. While part of him mourned the loss, the practical side that had been driving him the last few years knew it was a small price to pay if Hiram Grant were stopped.
Heero had naturally accessed the computer. Duo had expected nothing less. Except for security and file protections, Duo hadn't hidden anything. He wanted Heero to see everything he had. He wanted that logical mind to process the intell and hopefully confirm his own conclusions. He wanted to know that the best the Preventer's had was in possession of all the facts. He wanted to know that he wasn't alone.
~~~~
Heero woke up groggy in a corner of the passenger terminal on L3. The handcuffs were gone. A quick pat showed that he still had the data he'd recorded from Duo's computer and that his service weapon had been returned. Why had Duo let him go, especially with the data? What was Duo up to? And most importantly, how was he going to tell Trowa and Wufei the truth about Duo's new career?
~End Part 4~
Well... I took my reviewers recommendations to heart. No lemon. You're right, it would've been very forced, though in my original idea, it fit. *wry look* I think we just made this fic a lot longer than I'd initially planned, though I can make it all work.
