Choices

Wufei entered the living room already felling a dull ache on his chest, trying not to panic he took a few deep breaths and waited until Heero was already inside.

Duo was sitting nervously on the couch looking pointedly at his feet and Trowa had his eyes on Heero, trying to figure out what would be the man's reaction. Nobody noticed when Wufei's hands started shaking, nor when he bit his lip trying hard not to cry out in pain, neither when he looked around desperately trying to make eye contact with his husband so he would know…

Only when there was a sick thud and the sound of something hitting the floor the three heads turned to access the situation, Wufei was laying on the floor, his long black mass of hair sprawled all around him, hiding his face and most of his upper body.

“Love!” Trowa left his position behind the couch immediately and was kneeling beside Wufei before the other two men could think of moving. “Oh Nataku… help us…” he muttered desperately when he turned his lover's head to face him and saw a small stream of blood flowing from a head wound.

“What happened, why is he bleeding?” Duo asked kneeling on the other side of Wufei and not liking Trowa's concerned expression one bit.

“He hit his head on the fall…”

“Yeah, I figured that much out Tro, I meant why was this ridiculous fall enough to make Fei bleed?” he asked impatiently.

“I… it's something to do with his new medicine… the doctors said it might make him weaker at first… one of the patients skin grew so thin he had to be very careful for any bump or cut would brake it…”

“So you telling me these are only side effects? Passing out like this and bleeding?”

“No Duo… the passing out is what the medicine is supposed to do… if the pain grows and it's so strong he can't take it remember…?”

“But we were talking just fine right now on the hallway…!” Heero came forward and lifted an eyebrow suspiciously, “how could he just pass out like this so fast?'

“I don't know!” Trowa spat, his hands were shaking and he was hugging Wufei closer to him, trying to fell his pulse. “I'm taking him to the hospital” he said, after clearing his throat twice and lifting Wufei's limp form in his arms.

“This is ridiculous!” Heero spat back, “He just passed out Barton! It could happen to anyone! You're over reacting!”

“Am I?” Trowa yelled from the entryway, “Then explain to me why I can barely fell his pulse Yuy!” He took a deep breath steadied Wufei in his arms and glared at Heero, “You are the one who should be worried after all that's happened to your lover! You're pathetic Yuy, pathetic! Just because you're afraid to solve your own problems don't prevent other people from trying to solve theirs!” He shut the door loudly behind him and left the pair of them to talk and hopefully solve their differences.

Two hours had passed since Trowa had brought Wufei into the hospital; the doctor's concerned expressions hadn't eased his racing heart one bit and by the time Quatre and Zechs had arrived with Lena he was almost panicking.

“They didn't say anything, they just shook their heads and took him from me… he's been in there for so long…” he tried to hold back a sob while filling his friends into the situation.

“And where's Duo?” Quatre asked, looking around.

“He… he's…” Trowa's eyes grew wide open and he turned to Quatre with a miserable expression in his eyes, “I left him at the apartment… with Heero… I thought they should talk… I mean…”

“Shh… it's all right Trowa, I'm not aware of everything that's happened to those two, but in a situation like this, if it where Zechs I'd have done just the same…” he patted his friend's shoulder reassuringly.

“Would you like me to go there and see if they're both alright?” Zechs asked Trowa and received Quatre's approving smile.

Trowa stared at him for a few seconds and then at Quatre and sighed, the tension on his shoulders easing a great bit, “Thank you” he nodded and Zechs turned to leave the waiting room with his daughter in his arms.

“Papa… Lena want to stay here! Pwease…” she was trying to disentangle herself from Zechs' arms.

“I don't know honey… I think you'd better come with Papa, maybe uncle Trowa doesn't want to be bothered…”

“No…” Trowa approached his god-daughter and opened his arms so she could throw herself on them, “I would much appreciate Lena's company…” he said smiling a sad smile and holding the girl protectively.

Zechs nodded and turned again to leave, kissing his own husband on the cheek and rushing towards the parking lot.

Trowa walked slowly until he stood beside a window and forgot Quatre's presence for the moment as he relished in Lena's small loving hands.

“Wu-niichan will be all right, won't he uncle Trowa?” she asked, her big chocolate eyes looking up at him.

“I… I don't know honey… I thought so… but the doctors they…”

“Doctors?!” Lena squeaked, “Doctors…?” she looked around hastily, “Lena don't like Doctors…no, no… they have needles and, and scary white coats and…”

“Oh, it's ok honey, there are doctors but they are here to take care of Wufei not of you” Quatre said from behind them, reaching to ruffle his daughter's hair.

“Oh… ok then…” She said, leaning her small head to rest on Trowa's shoulder and yawning.

“Mr. Barton?” a nurse called from the end of the corridor just as they were able to see a bed being directed to a room and Trowa recognized his husband's long black mane spilling from it.

“Yes?” He rushed forward still holding Lena in his arms.

“Would you like to see your frien… ah lover?” She corrected herself as her eyes scanned the patient's data on her clipboard and saw that the patient and Mr. Barton had the same address and one was listed as the other's closest contact to reach in case something happened.

“Yes, of course! Can you tell me what the problem is?” he asked anxiously following her to the door of the room.

“I'm sorry sir, I was only told to call you into his room, but his doctor will be here shortly and he will be able to explain everything…” She smiled sympathetically at him and pointed at Lena, “Is that your daughter? I'm sorry but children are not allowed in his room yet…”

“Oh… all right…” Trowa motioned for Quatre to come closer and gave Lena over to him, the girl who was almost asleep in his arms woke with the motion and glared at Trowa, “Lena want to see Wu-niichan!” she demanded, “He in there, isn't he?” she pointed at the room and tried to free herself from Quatre's arms.

“No dear” Quatre said soothingly, “He's not allowed to see you yet”

“Why? Lena's his friend… Lena want to see Wu-niichan!”

“Lena” Trowa said quietly, “I am very worried about Wufei too, but if we both go in there to see him who will stay outside and take care of your father?” He lifted an eyebrow and before Lena had a chance to reply he finished with “After all, he'd be all alone in here if a mean doctor decided to give him a shot…”

Lena looked up at her daddy's innocent face and her expression became one of deep commitment, “Uncle Trowa, I'm sorry you'll have to go inside `lone, Lena can't leave Daddy here with bad Doctors!” She looked grimly at Trowa and he barely nodded, his face still serious as he turned to enter Wufei's room.

The tubes and needles around his husband didn't do much to alleviate his expression. He walked towards the bed and took one of Wufei's hands in his, it was cold, and he started assessing his condition. He didn't have enough time, though, for the doctor responsible for Wufei arrived and started explaining things at once, his eyes lingering on Trowa's and Wufei's joined hands.

“Mr. Chang has developed a very serious condition” He started mercilessly, “The drugs he was taking reacted badly with his system and their prolonged use only contributed for this “shut-down” he had today…”

“Shut-down…?” Trowa lifted an eyebrow and tightened his grip around his husband's frail limb.

“Yes, we think that his passing out was more of a warning sign, that if he keeps taking this medicine he will ah… be “shut-down” permanently”

Trowa focused one wide open green eye on the doctor's face “But is he going to be ok? What should we do, he needs his medicine or the pain will drive him insane”

“We are well aware of Mr. Chang's precarious conditions Mr. Barton, after all, the drug he is taking was developed by one of this hospital's research programs… It appears that he'll have to stand a couple of months without any medication, until we work out what exactly on that drug reacted badly with his system”

“You mean he'll just have to suffer while you research?'

“I'm afraid so Mr. Barton” the doctor answered coolly.

Trowa's face was flushed by anger, “But… why now? Why did this happen now? Why didn't it happen before or why didn't his body send less drastic warnings?” He demanded.

“We suspect that it did Mr. Barton, and your lover mistook them for side effects… which, in a way of course they were…”

“Gods…” Trowa shook his head and tried to steady his trembling hands. “Is he going to wake up anytime soon?”

“Yes. He's only been drugged to sleep so we could proceed to clean his blood from the drugs he's been taking. That's why he'll have to stay in hospital for at least a week, we can't change his blood all at once, so he'll be receiving donations periodically until we're sure his body is completely clean…”

Trowa nodded numbly and kept staring at Wufei's seemingly calm face, he sighed miserably. “Wake up love… please…” he whispered. Trowa didn't care if the doctor was still there, if he still had things to say about Wufei's condition, all he knew is that he needed for Wufei to open his eyes and look at him. Just look. That would be reassuringly enough for him.

-------------------------------------------

Three hours had passed until Wufei finally woke up, Trowa was curled on a chair beside his bed, half asleep but his eyes shot open as soon as he heard movement from the bed.

“Hello love…” the Chinese whispered, smiling weakly at his husband.

Trowa had to control himself not to throw himself at his lover's arms in relief, instead he smiled back and all the despair he had been holding back unleashed in the form of copious tears.

Eventually he moved from the chair to sit on the bed and hold Wufei tightly in his arms. “Gods… I was so frightened…” he sobbed.

Wufei didn't answer, he simply let himself be held, truly he was feeling exhausted and he didn't care to try to understand why his lover was so desperate until he'd come to terms with the possibility and asked, “Am I dying love?”

Trowa's hold on him tightened and the man let out a strangled cry, “Gods, no!” he said, “Of course not!”

“Then why are you crying so much?”

“Fei… how… how could you not tell me about the warnings you'd been receiving from your body?” Trowa asked sadly, removing his arms from around his husband and looking him in the eye.

“Signs?” The Chinese lifted a confused eyebrow.

“Yes! Signs! The doctor was here and he said this, this passing out of yours is just another sign your body is trying to send you…”

“What?” Wufei asked, completely lost.

“The medicine was not doing you any good Fei, it's possible it was only worsening your condition…”

Wufei stood very still for a moment, his eyes never leaving Trowa's. “So I really am dying” he whispered at last.

“No!” Trowa all but yelled, “No, you're not dying! Take this ridiculous idea out of your head Fei!”

Wufei didn't answer, he just turned away to look at the window. “How long have I been here” he asked seriously.

“Almost eight hours…” Trowa whispered.

The Chinese held his breath for a bit, “That's too much Barton… you know that being out for that long wont do anybody any good…” he spoke slowly, trying to make Trowa understand his reasoning, “Maybe I'm not dying… but I sure as hell must have damaged something in my head to go out like that…”

Trowa's tears that had just subsided came back full force at the possibility of his husband having had a brain injury on top of it all, he shook his head, “But the doctors didn't say anything… if something had happened they'd surely…”

“Maybe not love. Who knows? They might be trying to ease some of your pain…”

“My pain? My pain? Are you insane? Fei, you're the one who is sick, I'm the last person they should be worried about!”

“Yes Barton, I'm the one who's sick… but at least I'm not freaking out over every little thing…”

Trowa shook his head and sighed “You sound just like Heero you know…”

“Yeah, but when Yuy says these things he just manages to sound like a bastard, when coming out of my mouth they become words of wisdom” Wufei mused.

Trowa held back a laugh just in respect for his surroundings and looked affectionately at his husband “That's why love you Fei”

“What, because I'm a wise man deeply in contact with my inner self?”

“No… because you manage to lighten my heart even in the darkest of situations!” Trowa smiled and brought his husband's cold hands to his lips, kissing them adoringly.

Wufei smiled back and sighed, he could feel deep inside him that another pain attack was just about to start, but for the moment he was happy being awake and basking in his lover's warm presence.
