Tap, tap, tap.

The sound of rain filled the woman's ears as she irritably waited for her expected guest. Her guest was 10 minutes late and even though classes were over for the day, she had homework to grade and calls to make. However, she expected to have to wait for him. Lieutenant Noin was waiting for the one and only person who would dare to be late to a meeting with her; Lieutenant Zechs Merquise, the Lighting Baron.

Lt. Noin had known Zechs for 5 years. They met at the age of 12; Noin was the star cadet and Zechs was the new cadet. He was unusual; he tested into Noin's class without ever having to take the first year of classes. He was also under the protection of Treize Khrushnada so it was obvious that he was very special. He never interacted with the rest of the students, just Trieze and Une so Noin at first disliked him until their last year.

Noin was the one of the most popular students and always had a boyfriend or a guy vying to date her. Zechs was aloof and completely separate from everyone else. So it surprised everyone that Noin and Zechs managed to become friendly rivals their last year as they vied to see who would be number 1 in their class. However, everything changed on the night after graduation. After a bet involving a ride in a mobile suit, Noin kissed Zechs. Then later that night, Noin and Zechs ended up in Zech's bed together.

The first smile of the day came to Noin's face as she thought of that memory. Zech's wasn't her first but something changed that night. She dated another guy her first year as an ensign but nothing was the same. No man made her feel like Zechs made her feel even though they had just been practically kids. She grimaced; she could not afford to even think of losing her heart to anyone. She was an officer, even though she was teaching at the Academy, a war could happen at anytime. Especially not to Zechs Merquise, a man who lived to take revenge against those who killed his family and robbed him of his country and inheritance. Especially not to a man whose identity as the Lighting Baron and his birth as a Peacecraft warred within his very soul.

However, she found herself falling for the most confused and complicated man in the world. Yes, they had sex, lots of good sex, whenever they saw each other but Noin needed to know if there was a chance for more or if she sold herself short to a man who saw her only as a sex object.

Noin was taken from her thoughts as the door to her room opened. It was Zechs, resplendent in his red and white uniform and an umbrella in his right hand. Noin couldn't help the faint smile that came on her face as she said, "20 minutes late."

Zechs shrugged and laid the umbrella on the floor. He replied, "Lady Une did not want to leave until the last minute."

Noin asked, "When are you leaving Zechs?"

He snapped, "Tomorrow morning. Why did you want to see me?"

Noin gritted her teeth. Zechs was annoyed as well and when he was annoyed he was the most unreasonable man on the face of the earth. Noin quietly stated, "I wanted to ask you about us."

Zechs made a show of brushing the lapel of his coat before replying. He said, "What is wrong with it?"

Noin resisted the urge to scream before she told him, "Do you just like fucking me or is there a chance for something more?"

He paused as if he was slowly digesting her question. Then Zechs said, "I seriously don't know."

Noin paused before she said anything else. It seemed like tonight Zechs was being deliberately evasive and she wanted Zechs to say what he felt exactly without pushing him to the point of no return. Zechs was given a slow temper that when aroused made him liable to do something abruptly without thinking.

So she was surprised when Zechs blew out a breath of air and then asked, "What do you expect from me Noin? Do you expect roses and romance like Treize? Do you want to be able to brag that you have the Lighting Baron as your boyfriend? I don't know what you want Noin!"

She blinked; Zechs did not scream but asked this in a genteel tone. He was still stoic as usual but Noin tread carefully anyway. Noin said, "I can no longer play these little games with you Zechs. Make a choice."

Zechs looked at her, his expression and eyes unreadable in the dim light of the room. His lips quirked in an unreadable smile. Noin shivered a bit; the last time she saw that kind of look from him, he was high off of battle lust. Zechs drawled, "I wish all of those who believe that you do not have a spine when it comes to me were here now."

Noin blushed but she kept attentive to the mission at hand. But Zechs surprised her by speaking first. He came over to Noin and brushed a finger over her left cheek. Noin's eyes looked at his finger and then at his face. She could see the vulnerability in Zechs, the lost little boy before it hardened and became the man that he was today. Zechs whispered, "I wish that this day would not have to come but I knew it had to happen. I can't give you what you want Noin."

Noin blinked and brought up surprised yet comprehending eyes up to Zechs' face. Her face and body betrayed nothing but her eyes were a mixture of hurt, sadness, and strength. He felt his heart break a little as Zechs' continued to look into Noin's eyes. They just stood there looking at each other before Noin turned her head to the side.

Noin said, "Well, I guess that is it."

Zechs closed his eyes before replying, "I guess so too." He wanted to bring her to him, to kiss her but it was too late now. Unsure of what to say, Zechs left.

Noin sighed as the door closed and for the first time since her parents died, cried.
