The eight year old girl stood as still as she could, her hands clasped around the handle of the wicker basket she held in her hands. She had straight shoulders, perfect posture and an elegant grace that was unusual for most girls of her age, though being raised in the circus since a few days after her birth had made her anything but normal.
She looked sideways at the boy beside her. His wild, ash blonde hair spiked a little everywhere despite the amount of gel she remembered his mother putting in it while they were getting ready. The nine year-old returned her side-glance with a narrow glare of bluish green. She rolled her eyes and sighed lightly, he was such a moody boy.
She bit her lip trying to ignore the itch at the back of her head where the beret clasped back her dark brown hair, keeping it out of her deep green eyes. She had been born with her father's cowlick but her hair was all one length and would fall in her eyes if not held back from her brow. She felt a pair of eyes on her and turned her head to the side to look at another young girl who was her mirror image, furrowing her brow as if telling her sister to stop fidgeting. She bit the inside of her lip again, irritated at her sister's bossiness. Even though she was older than her by only seven minutes she had still always thought she was in charge.
Looking straight ahead she admired her mother, the woman she thought was the most beautiful woman in the world, well, Aunt Cathy was pretty too, but not like her mother. Her mom was much more elegant and quiet, though somewhat stern and commanding and even though she had never seen a whole lot of her mother in the past she had grown to admire her considerably.
Anne's posture was as straight and as poised as both of her daughters, standing beside the man she loved. Her ivory colored dress was modest but fit her slender frame snugly, giving just enough to draw attention to the swelling of her growing abdomen, which cradled in it what would soon be the third Barton child. Her veil was laid halfway down her back, it's crown a weave of baby's breath and an assortment of various tiny flowers of pastel colors. Her gloved hands held a large bouquet of flowers, which matched those in her hair.
The man her mother stood beside was an eye-catching sight as well. He wore a neatly pressed tux, which was the blackest color the girl had ever seen. It contrasted nicely with the forest green of his cummerbund, which of course brought out his eyes of the same color.
She wanted to jump for joy at last seeing her parents finally kiss, bringing an end to the forty-minute ceremony. She was the first to run up, pushing her way through the growing crowd of people around her parents to her daddy who caught her as she jumped up into his arms.
"Oh daddy! You and mommy looked so beautiful."
"So do you, kitten." He looked down to see his other daughter. "And my other kitten looks just as pretty."
The standing girl blushed. "Daddy were identical twins, of course we're gonna look the same."
Anne smiled, amused at her daughter's serious, logical nature. But that was Madison, a far cry from her twin sister Devon who was a bit of a dreamer and always seemed to have a laughing smile, though if she was angered she could turn into a little spitfire.
"Come on you two. There are still those who want to congratulate your parents. I'll take you to where the other kids are."
Devon hopped down from her father's arms, and like her twin sister, followed Mariemeia, who was of course the Maid of Honor, over to where the other children were playing.
In the beginning, to protect Anne, they had decided to hide the information from everyone except a few close friends. With all of the help they had received from the other former pilots and their wives, and limiting her exposure to others, they had been able to disguise Lady Une's pregnancy. Then, a few days before the due time, the former assistant to Treize Kushranada, feigned illness and took to secluded residence for some much needed rest and recuperation.
A few days after the delivery of Dev and Madi, as Trowa had a habit of calling them, they put the plan they had decided on into motion, and Trowa took the twins to the safety of the circus where he and his sister Catherine raised them, though she had left five years later to become Mrs. Quatre Rebaba Winner.
During the time of the girls' early years, they had seen there mother several times, though had never experienced actually living with her until only three months ago, when Lady Anne Une had decided to officially retire, paving the way for her and Trowa to make their relationship known to the public. They also announced at that time, that within a few weeks they would be parents once again, this time to a boy who they had decided to name Corbin. They had also decided that they would get married after Anne had come to soften on the idea and realize that it would not, in anyway, make her appear weak or dependent on a man.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds were going to be off on a brief honeymoon with crossed fingers that their unborn son would not be making a surprise, early appearance. Then, Trowa, already having officially retired from the circus life, had chosen to take a teaching job at a local university, while Anne had plans to make up for the lost years she had missed with her daughters and the new memories that she would be making with her third child. Mariemeia was in her first year at an ivy league college, living comfortably on her own from the inheritances left to her by her late father and grandfather.
Treize as well, had left a more then generous portion of his estates and assets to Anne, which she had invested wisely over the years and turned a hefty profit as well. At first, she was curious as to why Trowa insisted on working, even though her fortune could sustain them many times over. She knew, however, her husband had a deep-seated desire to be productive and that by helping the younger generations by sharing his experiences, it was a way for him to assure a safer and more secure future for his own children and those children of his closest friends.
"They've grown so much."
"Huh?" Trowa looked lovingly over at his new bride as her eyes watched at a distance their girls and the children of the others playing tag in the grass. Relena and Heero's son Avery, was naturally agile and fast, but then so was Dev, she being the only one even coming close to being able to keep up with him, even though she was just under a year younger then him.
Trowa leaned over Anne and kissed her temple softly. "You're there for them now, and you'll be there for our son. Happiness is ours for the taking."
Her smile was warm but small as she looked up into his eyes, while fighting back the tears that were threatening to fall from her own. She brought up a gloved hand and smoothed his cheek. "We're going to have a happy life, Trowa. I know that, now."
Drawing his wife into a tight reassuring embrace he leaned over her once more, this time placing a kiss on her lips, sealing it with a vow from his heart. "Now and forever, Anne, this I can promise you."
The End
