Chapter 6

Duo didn't know what had changed. His mother had stopped smiling days ago but refused to tell him what was wrong. She hadn't cooked or moved, for that matter, just as long. Her eyes weren't warm, either icy cold or just…dead. The day that his father was supposed to come home had come and gone.

“Where's papa?” He had asked. He looked up worriedly at his mother's pale profile. “Mama?” He asked again when he didn't receive an answer.

“We're going back to L2.” Lynn had answered. The words were angry as she spat them without look at her son. She stood and marched out of the room.

Now here they were. He'd never seen a place like L2. The streets were dirty and run down. Most of the kids he'd come to know stole and sold drugs. It was a big change compared to the quiet peaceful neighborhood they had lived in.

“Duo, be a darling, go get us some bread.”

Duo looked up from his thoughts to his mother's roommate. He was ashamed to admit that he was starting to like the woman more than his own mother. This woman had spent more time with him, actually talked to him. She was a nice woman though she often painted her face with odd shades of makeup she said would make her eyes stand out more. He didn't know why she'd need it. She was a beautiful woman without it.

Caramel, as she was called, had long naturally curly black hair made of shades of dark brown. Her eyes were wide, blue depending on the contacts she wore. Today, she wore green ones. They made her look vaguely oriental. Over each of her eyes were artificial eyelashes that hid her naturally blonde eyelashes making them smoky black. Red eyeshadow made her eyes glow against her pale face.

She smiled sweetly down at the boy. The movement made her pouting shy pink lips glisten. She reached into the top of her midnight blue silk teddy she wore and pulled out a few credits. “You know how to tell the bread is fresh?” She asked bending giving the barely five year old a full view of her cleavage. When Duo shook his head, she took his hand and pressed it to her chest. She squeezed her hands over his thus causing him to squeeze her breast.

Duo blinked in confusion looking from the woman's chest to her glowing green eyes.

“If the bread is as soft as my breasts, then it is fresh.” She informed the youth. She waited until he nodded to press the credits into the same hand she had pressed to her chest. “Hurry along, love, it almost lunch time and I have to go to work in a few.”

Duo nodded again before turning to leave the two bedroom apartment they now lived in. His worn black sole sneakers thudded loudly against the creaky steps leading to the ground floor. Each time he took a step his toes reminded him that his shoes were long overdue for a date with the trash can.

When he reached the ground floor he stuffed the credits in the back pocket of his tattered jeans. He straightened the red, black, and grey plaid zip up shirt in a futile attempt to make it seem that he hadn't just worn the exact outfit for two weeks. There was really no point in being self conscious. Compared to the other people he knew, he dressed like a prince.

He went out of the apartment building cringing pass the man with one eye that smelled of cigarette smoke. The artificial sun of the colony was high over head giving light to the desolate scenery.

Duo trotted down the street scanning anxiously for any form of a threat. He was greeted with a stray dog with only three legs hobbling towards me. Violet eyes stared at the dog sympathetically. Its fur was matted and black from dirt and other things. The stubble of its leg looked infected obviously not having been removed properly. It met his eyes with its own wide brown eyes. It tail hung cautiously at between its legs.

“Are you hungry?” Duo asked slowly bringing his hand up to pet the dog. The dog lowered its head fearfully at first before pressing its head up against the gentle touch. “Come on, Death obviously doesn't plan on visiting you just yet.” The youth said remembering Caramel's speech to his mother. “Come on.” He called cheerfully resuming his trek to get bread only to be stopped again. This time at the sight of a gang of kids running his way. One in particular caught his attention.

He was the tallest of the kids, probably around ten or eleven. His hair was wheat blonde and wild held back with a sky blue headband. His eyes stared defiantly ahead of him. His heart shaped face held a smirk on his lips as he ignored the man running after him and his gangs. He was dressed in rags that looked like they'd been stitched together as he grew. He was barefoot like the smaller children following him.

“You little hoodlums!!” The old man shouted behind them. He'd given up his chase two blocks back. His beady black eyes glared heatedly at the youths' retreating forms.

“Comin' through, Pretty eyez.”

Duo stumbled out of the way at the streetwise accented youth's voice. He was surprised to feel a faint blush spreading through his face. He watched in awe as the small gang rounded the corner. “Wow,” Was the only word he could find for it. The whining bark of his new companion bought him out of his stupor. “Oh, right, we'll get you fed, ne?” He smiled down at the canine and continued to walk.

The bread merchant wasn't too happy to have him searching for bread on his own. Duo could feel the man's eyes glaring at him as if the gaze alone could burn a hole through him. Unconsciously the young American hunched around himself searching through the bread they normally got, Wonder Bread. He squeezed each one searching his memory to tell whether they passed `inspection.' When he found the two he wanted, he went to the counter.

The merchant took the bread and rang them up. “That will be seven credits.”

Duo reached into his pockets. Caramel had given him the exact amount but he counted them over anyways. He stood on his tiptoes and pressed the money into the man's hand. The merchant's harsh glare seemed to lessen in acknowledgement of the boy's innocence. He bagged the bread and handed it down to the boy.

“There you go.”

“Thank you, mister.” Duo gave the man his best smile albeit a few teeth were missing now. The man couldn't help but return the gesture. “Bye!” Duo shouted over his shoulder and ran out of the room to greet his new friend. At the sound of the dog's yelp and obvious pained whine, something was wrong. He turned to the street he'd come down to see a group of much older kids kicking his new found friend and laughing at the poor animal's pain. “Hey!!” He shouted.

“Huh?” One of the older kids turned to look at him. His eyes were small and blue behind the unruly dirty fringes of his blonde hair. “You say somethin' kid?”

“Don't kick him, he did nothing to you!”

“You talk funny kid.” Another of the kids said taking another kick at the downed dog. His foot connected with the side of the dog's neck. The canine yelped and whined recoiling from the force of the blow.

“Stop it!!” Duo shouted feeling tears gather in the corner of his eyes.

“You a girl or a boy?” The blonde asked turning his attention to the boy. “With a braid like that, I'd say a girl.”

Duo unconsciously gripped the braid at the base of his neck. Caramel had braided it for him since they couldn't afford getting it cut professionally. “You…you leave him alone!” He said bravely.

The blonde sneered and took a step forward. “And what do we get if we do? That bread looks pretty good.”

Duo gripped the bag tighter in his free hand. “You can't have this. Caramel has to make lunch.”

Blondie spit and sneered even more. “You mean that slut, Caramel. Paid her thirty credits for a blowjob. It wasn't that good. Maybe I want my money back.” To emphasize his words, he pulled out a small pocket knife and flicked it open.

“Damn, looks like I came back jus' in time.” The familiar voice called Duo's attention. He looked towards the `hoodlum' from before.

“This ain't yo' fight, Solo.” The other kid sneered. His blonde companion nodded in agreement.

“Ye-ain't fightin' fair then it is my fight.” Solo shrugged and looked cockily at the two. “You shouldn't be gangin' up on a kid an'wayz.” His cool gaze turned into a glare. Despite the fact he was two feet shorter than the other two; he received the cringe he was working for from both boys. “Get out of hea.”

The two boys faltered for a second before taking off. Duo looked from the two fleeing youths to the one they had called Solo.

“You alright, Pretty Eyez?” He asked sauntering confidently towards the younger boy. Duo nodded finding it hard to speak at the moment. “You should take betta care o' yourself.” He said.

“Uh…Thank you!” Duo said bowing shortly before sprinting towards the dog he'd planned to feed. The dog lifted its head as he approached. One of its eyes was completely red having been damaged during its beating. It whimpered unsteadily.

“Hey, boy,” Duo greeted lowering himself to his knees. “I'm sorry they did that to you. It was really mean.” He said. As he spoke he began to open the bag of bread. He took out four slices and offered it to the dog. He watched worriedly as the dog tried to take the bread into its mouth out to cry out as pain rifled through its jaw.

“He's not gonna make it.” Solo said standing at the boy's side. Duo looked up with glistening eyes. The older boy sweat-dropped. “It's a way of life, ain't no point in cryin' bout it.” He said waving his hands. He was only greeted with sniffling. With a sigh, Solo grabbed the other boy by his shoulders and pulled him to his feet. He bought the boy closer to him in an awkward hug. “Shinigami comes unexpectedly….you can only mourn for a while before havin' to move on.” He said sounding wiser beyond his years.

Duo nodded quickly sparing the whining dog a glance.

“It'll be better to just put'em out of his misery, ya know?” Solo said flicking out a pocket knife of his own. “I can't make it quick and painless but it'll be faster than jus lettin' him die on his own like that.”

Duo nodded uncertainly. Solo stepped away from him then and stepped towards the dog. He crouched slowly. Moments later, the dog let out a startled pained cry. Duo's heart leapt into his chest as he saw blood splay undoubtedly staining Solo's clothes. He heard the other boy curse before finally both fell still.

Solo stood slowly turning. Duo felt his stomach lurch when he saw that the boy's creamy face was stained with blood along with the front of his chest. At his feet, the dog laid dead throat cut open completely to the spinal cord. Duo stepped back in horror almost dropping the back of bread he held in his hand.

”It had to be done, Pretty Eyez.” Solo insisted. “He's not suff'rin where he's at.” He looked passively into Duo's terrified violet eyes.

“You're a monster!!” Duo shouted feeling the hurt of his short termed and only friend's death. He turned on his heals and ran home not caring to look back.

A/N: Damn…I don't know what happened honestly. I was riding with my friend to the library and there was this dog with only three legs. Then all these ideas came to mind. To say honestly….this kind of made me feel vaguely nauseous. I have a soft spot of animals believe it or not. Please review and don't flame. I don't kill animals outside of stories so there's no point in acting like I do otherwise.
